Full Version: Woodcutting Rebalance
Sal's RuneScape Forum > Everything RuneScape > RuneScape Updates & News
Donovan

Willows, maples and magic trees all have their uses, but what of the lesser known vegetation such as the hollow trees of Mort Myre or the arctic pines of the Fremennik isles? With this week’s update, we’ve taken a closer look at the Woodcutting skill, rebalancing experience for the less popular trees and cultivating some new forms of training, but it’s not just XP rates that we’ve been analysing...

Teak and mahogany trees now also have a special log or two up their sleeves, which are worth much more than their weight in gold to the right buyer! Choking ivy has been seen clambering up the stone walls of RuneScape’s major cities and is much tougher to deal with than it looks. We’ve also tweaked arctic pine-splitting and put up some Prayer-refreshing hollow bark torches in the Haunted Woods, so get your hatchets out and your arms chopping!

Finally, the workers at the Lumber Yard are inviting high-level woodcutters to participate in 'Sawmill Training', where you can grab, slice and saw your way to greater experience. For more information on all of these changes, head over to the Woodcutting section of the Game Guide.

In other news...

Hobgoblins were starting to feel a bit left behind in the looks stakes compared to their Bandosian brothers, so we've given them a graphical rework.

We've removed the doors to Edgeville's furnace to make it easier to use, but moved the furnace two squares further from the bank to maintain the balance. You will still need to have completed the necessary Varrock Achievement Diary tasks in order to use the furnace.

You might notice a small new feature has been added to the Friends List (the ability to move the line separating players’ names and online status). This feature is associated with the Display Names update, which we’re hoping to release later this year.

Patch Notes

The following small fixes and adjustments have now been made to the game. If you spot any further bugs in-game, please use the Bug Report feature ('Submit a Bug Report' under the 'Help' drop-down menu of the website).

Graphical
  • Fixed some ground near the turoths in the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon.
  • Fixed various animation issues when undertaking tasks on Miscellania and optimised the code at the same time.

Quests
  • Fixed a sailing bug in the Regicide quest.

Miscellaneous
  • Corrected the POH rooms available in the new advisor system.
  • Repaired a building in the old tutorial.
  • Improved the caret feature to better handle '<' and '>'.
  • Display the correct chathead when conversing with Millie the miller.
  • Stopped non-cat followers saying “miaow” and other such phrases.
  • Corrected the examine messages when talking to Hotfuthand at the Grand Exchange
  • Changed some core code to fail gracefully rather than cause the game client to crash.
  • Sped up gem cutting to match their original behaviour.
  • Certain gnome cuisine items should now have more flexibility price-wise.
  • Corrected the advisor information for Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf.
  • Lumbridge melee dummies will no longer be affected by the Zamorak spear’s special attack.
  • Ensure players can only have one god cape at a time.
  • Stopped players walking through the ropes in the combat training hall in Lumbridge

yay, display names are coming soon!

So now even more people will powercut Teaks... weren't they powerful enough already?
The other ideas sound interesting, but nothing to get excited about tongue.gif

I'm guesssing the sawmill is better exp than willows but no money?
Whiskas88
This looks like a very good update, and I'm glad Hobgoblins have been updated, I'm about to go try the new update. wink.gif
Mohorak
I know that ivy is a great way to power-train, but the bad news is that there are rarely any drops (a bird's nest once in a while), and it's not super-fast. It is nice xp, I'll grant you that, but nothing to turn Woodcutting on its head.

At last, this was getting annoying.

Special teak logs are worth 1.3k

Yes, they are rare, so don't get your hopes up.
mr blaster
i wonder if these special logs work with using a butler?
The Who?
I'm disappointed in Jagex, woodcutting was already easy enough. sad.gif

I was wondering if the special teak and mahogany will work with Miscellania. And from reading, my understanding is the hollow tree xp is a bonus situation. If you cut normally, they give 85 xp. But each time you have a chance to get Hollow Bark. If you get Hollow Bark, the xp jumps to 337. Now what I'm trying to figure out is if Hollow Bark has an actual use other than the bonus. Anyone know? smile.gif

Nope, Mod Emilee confirms they cannot be gotten from Miscellania.

The bark is used to light something in Canafis for like 10 prayer points.
Rene
Isn't the bark also used for splitbark armor? Or am I thinking about the wrong bark here?

They said they hope to release it later this year.

Don't get your hopes up just yet. Sure, it might be in 2 weeks however it could also take till late december / early 2010.

To be honest I think that's what they were aiming for. Not a complete overhaul... just a tweak.

Quite interested but didn't really understand a 100% from that post how all the new updates work...looks like I've got a bit of research to do!

Obviously, this must be a super secret way of Jagex letting us know that they are fixing all kinds of sailing bugs to prepare for the release of sailing. I'm glad to let you all know about this.

And on a more serious note, Imma try out this new lumberyard thing (even though I already have 99 wc ;_;)

Nah, they confirmed it that Sailing isn't the new skill planed.

In the other hand, this training area is amazing experience and most importantly, not boring. smile.gif

Zachary was joking.

This update comes at a perfect time for me because I'm currently working to master Woodcutting.

Agent F explains why you just pwned yourself, good sir.

And just so I"m being on topic :3

I can cut the ivy as fast as maple logs, only they're worth double the xp. Problem? I think not.

so wait, anything F2P in this update?

Jagex has confirmed in one of the previous Q and A that sailing is not the skill thats going to be released.

nice, more willow xp wub.gif too bad i got 99 wc on my main already closedeyes.gif

Yes, definitely a much needed update! Hopefully they keep this up!

hobgobIins look sweet now

woodcutting change came out at the right time i dont have 99 yet
chaosor
Seriously, this is why I am thinking of quitting RuneScape soon. They continue to make skills easier, and easier. Leave them as they are, if you want to update them, fine, but don't make them easier/harder. Now, somebody with 68+ woodcutting, can get 120-140k exp per hour, with sc hatchets dry.gif Without the sc hatchets, they would still get about 60-70k exp per hour, and thats only at 68. at 90-99, they probably would make closer to 75-90k per hour, and 150k-180k per hour with the sc hatchets. Alot of 99 woodcutters hate this update, including me, because they just made a somewhat-respectable 99, become a not as respectable 99. Some people are saying that this is going to triple or quadrouple the number of people with 99 woodcutting, in the next year alone.

[sarcasm] Thanks for making my first 99 less respectable jagex [/sarcasm]

I am beginning to think jagex is making these updates, to get us to quit, why else make RuneScape eaiser with most updates? And why else give the winners of the machinima competition 10 years, "that continues when used up", instead of just saying infinite membership.
Mith
They're not trying to get everyone to quit. But many players have been looking for high level updates (I assume this can be considered one..)

I agree with you that the SC rewards are a bit overpowered. But the time playing the game makes up for it, I think.

It's not that high. Seriously, I if I wanted to, I could probably get 68 woodcutting in 2 weeks. (on a noob account, since my main already has 99, and my skiller has 56, so it can't be timed) The reason I said they might be trying to make people quit, is because they are making everything (especially skills) too easy, even though they know it will get all the higher level players ticked, that a skill has been made easier, especially if they have 99 in that skill. They also gave the winners of the competition 4000 days, instead of infinite, or the highest number they could, as if they expect Runescape to go down before then, but making Runescape worse would convince the players to quit faster, which could, in theory, fight addiction (player repeatedly quits, and starts playing again, can't stay away from the game irl).
I do agree with you about the SC, though the exp rates of the vines, and lumberyard, are still way overpowered.
Bosseli
Very intrestin and nice idea. biggrin.gif
I actually like this, but im now F2p sad.gif
Good job Jagex.
Mohorak
The xp rate is countered by the fact that you don't get anything out of it besides the occasional bird nest.

Besides, wasn't everyone whining about the new shops making a bunch of skills too HARD to train (i.e. Summoning)?
