Full Version: Iphone Wants To Be One Of Those Hand Held Consoles!

So, somehow Apple thought that the iPhone would be great for games. I mean take a look at this:

http://www.techspot.com/news/32861-Apple-t...me-console.html
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/12/apple-t...gaming-console/
http://gizmodo.com/5372317/the-same-game-c...-the-iphone-why

So what do you think of this? (Apple running in the hand held consoles business?)

Me; I'm not sure what to say about this, to like it or hate it? I think they just got a little over their heads with the idea that all the Apps could turn it into something it's not. I mean all the Apps are quick games you play with a little, you WILL get bored of the App, and find another one. Kinda like these games: http://armorgames.com/ http://www.epicninja.com/

But on the other hand: the iPhone is already great. Phone, email, browser (Goes faster than most computers), Apps. Games are just a bigger thing of Apps, and Apps are games technically.

I've played almost all of the top iPhone games. They're all boring.

Not a popsicle's chance in Hell. Any half-decent computer will out-spec the iPhone. Might not count as "most computers", but my rig can open a Firefox window and have three tabs ready to go, with sites already fully loaded, in under 2 seconds. I've used iPhones, even w/ 3G the thing can't even manage one Safari window and a site loaded in under 30 seconds.

Omg iPhone browser...Sal's is such a pain to use even on WiFi.

appstore games=suck
don't even think of comparing them to PSP
even the DS is good compared to it

also i hate how apple states "O WOW WE HAVE 80000 ENTERTAINMENT + GAMES ON APPSTORE WHILE PSP ONLY HAS 900!!!!"
bs
quality, not quantity

No big surprise here, Apple have been trying to do this for a long time.

I've played lots of the games available for the iPhone/iPod Touch and in general you're right, they are small diversions that you only play for a short time before moving on to the next one. However, there are some exceptions, like Assassin's Creed (yes I know I go on about this app a lot tongue.gif). It isn't perfect, but I was very impressed by it and I was playing it for days trying to work through each of the difficulty modes (not non-stop you understand aware.gif). If they can produce more games like that, they could become very popular. The iPhone/iPod Touch is unlikely ever to beat any specialized portable gaming console, because it isn't one. But it's not exactly going to do them any harm if Apple can manage to add a list of good games to the features available.

Okay maybe not a lot of you here have slow computers, but some people do.
Dad
I don't know anyone who has a computer slower than an iPhone/Touch.

I have a pretty average spec PC, and i can load several web pages in less than a few seconds. Even with my crummy connection. What you're trying to argue is rubbish, if anybody has a PC that can be beaten by a 600MHz Single Core Processor and 256MB RAM then you should spend your money on an upgrade rather than a hideously overpriced phone.

If this is true, I define the Zune HD as the Xbox Portable.

Anyways, I knew i-pods would eventually get to be known as game consoles but they're still music players in my opinion and they should stick with it.

Agreed. Even if their weak computing power is ignored, I think they should take a lesson from the Atari. It eventually lost popularity because anyone could make games for it. There were way too many games that were way below par, and others that were horrible clones of other games, and it was hard to tell which were good games and which weren't. I see this turning out the same way. If anyone can make games for it, it won't be worth sifting through thousands of games just to find a relatively good one when you can just buy one 10x as good as the best of them for a PSP without worrying much at all about quality.

Yup, thats a good argument.
i doubt it will replace ANY of the existing hand held consoles like NDS and PSP.
They have great games, like that NDS has Zelda: Wind Waker, some Mario Kart, and alot more.
PSP has the classic Playstation-style games, also nice.
Its basicly just overpowered mobile games in iphone, not many games are standing out, and there is too many games to find those standing out.
Imagine standing in a desert with a row of persons.
Would you see those making a difference from 1 spot?

What is the reason for apple to turn MP3 players into gaming devices?

Gaming+music=nope

I don't think adding gaming features to current iPods would work.
But I believe they could make a good thing if they made a whole new model specialised in gaming.

I don't mind some casual games, but there's definitely not anything hardcore out there (MGS touch sucks tbh).

And that last part hurt.

Which one is reality? Because yea I'm kinda bummed that there's not going to be any hardcore games. I really want an RPG. sad.gif

And I like to think my posts have some quality in them. pfft.gif

Redmonke, sorry if I offended you, I was telling the quantity thing to -REAP-. You are a great forum member and tech help guy. I think they should have made you a DM instead of Gillis. happy.gif

EDIT: And yes, if this is not a very serious project, I think there aren't going to be any hardcore games.
redmonke
Well then... blush.gif

Anyways, these are the games I've got: Tetris, Scoops, Bejeweled 2, Need For Speed, and The Quest.

Three of them are pretty much games I can play for a minute or two before getting bored. NFS and The Quest can keep me occupied for some time (I've spent over an hours playing The Quest). Definitely need more games like that.
Mad Dark
Yeah, but those games (NFS, The Quest) are a bit hardcore in graphics. If they don't make any improvement in iPods' graphics system, I think all the games other than Tetris would look like crap.
redmonke
Well The Quest is 90s graphics so... box.gif

I like it. Reminds me of TES:Arena. wub.gif

I think it's too old for it...

It's already out (only like 5 bucks for hours of fun) and it's one of the best games out there.

Wow cool, but it must be hard controlling it...

Hehe... all other phones then iphone has Tibia...
I use to play that while having lunch break at school... xd.gif
Its a Java game, but still looks like a good ol' classic.
And no, i have never been fan of the Tibia game at all...
Just that its the only RPG for phones that is good..

(Shame that there is no RS Mobile, would actually be possible if the program was changed into a MIDP app.. rolleyes.gif )
