I'm not sure whether you'll be able to keep this thread going or not, but well done so far anyway.

As for my answers to the poll:

1) My favourite version of Windows is 7, it's without a doubt the best version.
2) I am already using Windows 7, so no I won't need to upgrade tongue.gif (Add 'current user of Windows 7' as a poll option plox.)
3) Yes, before I knew much about technology and before I researched pricing/hardware/OS X, I was seriously considering switching to Mac. Now however, I'm quite happy with Windows.
4) Yup, as a dedicated nerd I have to be kept up-to-date with the latest computer news and opinions tongue.gif I subscribe to PC Pro but read several other magazines online.
5) No I don't use Windows Mobile, because it's inferior to several other smartphone OSes at the moment. Besides, I don't own a smartphone aware.gif

EDIT: Also, Windows Mobile is now called Windows Phone, so you might want to change that.

@above posts: The Windows 7 beta was made available to the public in early February (I think; so long ago now lol tongue.gif), and the RTM in June?? (not sure - I have a really bad memory!). Anyway both of those were available free to the public then, so if you wanted Windows 7 you should have downloaded them. Also, MSDN subscribers have been able to download the final release version of Windows 7 legally for a while, that's the version I'm using.

I've tried out Windows 7, to be honest, there's nothing to be excited about. Sure there's tons of little fixes but there's nothing that truly amazes me. But, never the less I will upgrade once I get some external hard drive to back up all the crap I've downloaded.

To be fair, the taskbar/interface improvements are very good, the new display manager means a better overall user experience, security has been improved and a ton of features have been added. But then, I get it for free, so I guess I rave about it more than someone who has to factor in cost tongue.gif

Yes, everything is wiped in a clean install ON THE HARD DRIVE YOU INSTALL IT TO. So if you have more than one hard drive it won't wipe the non-install hard drive.

Anyway, just back up your documents and make sure you have the discs/product keys to reinstall your programs. What do you mean by pre-installed essential programs? If you mean drivers, you should have no problem. The absolutely imperative ones should be installed during the Windows install, and any others can be downloaded through Windows Update. If you mean the utter rubbish that comes with pre-built computers like 'OMG NORTONZ FREE TRIALZ!!!!' and 'UTTERLY POINTLESS PC SUITE!' then yes, you will lose them, although IMO that's an advantage tongue.gif

When I say pre-installed essential programs, I mean the manufacturer's programs. I have a Toshiba Satellite and I have several programs that I don't really know are safe to uninstall. One of them is used to reinstall drivers that you have removed. One is used to backup all of your drivers on to a DVD. Others, to name a few, are Toshiba ConfigFree, Toshiba Service Station, Toshiba Matrix Storage, and Toshiba Hardware setup. Those I don't know if I can uninstall or not. I've tried looking most of them up, but I can't find anything that gives me details on when it should or can be used and whether it's necessary or not. So the thing that scares me is that if I do a clean install of Windows, will I need to get those programs back?

That's what I mean.

You could think of Windows 7 as being a massive SP for Windows Vista.

Amazon are currently selling W7 HP for £65, which isn't that bad for a whole OS. I might need to actually pre-order it before it goes to £150 pfft.gif

No you won't, you don't NEED any of those programs. If you find you miss the functionality, there are plenty of free alternatives that will do the same thing.

I don't think it's fair to say that, it is an OS in its own right, there have been underlying kernel changes and other things that are much more major than a service pack.

I understand what you mean though in a way, I was so excited about Vista and then was really disappointed with it, I've found Windows 7 to be everything I wished Vista was.

Who are you directing that question to?

____________________________________________

I have a couple questions for everyone.

1. What is your worst experience while using a Windows experience?
2. What problem(s) occurs most when using your Windows computer?

Here are my answers.

1: My worst experience would probably be the day when I tried to turn on my computer and I received an error saying Windows could not start properly. It said it could be a hardware error or a software error. Then, it took twenty minutes to recover some files and do a system restore. When the computer finally started, my Norton Antivirus spent like fifteen minutes trying to update and it just sucked! This was on my Windows Vista. I hope this never happens with Windows 7.
2. The problem that occur most with my Windows computer would probably be my unresponsive Firefox. I don't know what causes it, but just out of the blue, my Firefox will decide to be a punk ass all day and continue to not work. The next day it will be working incredible.

I really look forward to getting answer from everyone! smile.gif

I'm going to start planning out some updates to the main post. Maybe a new section or some kind of event I don't know. smile.gif

I'm stealing your Avvy flames.

They've been working on 8 for I think about a year or more now. huh.gif

I have a feeling Windows 8 will be the most advanced OS ever. They stated it will have everything that they missed in Windows 7 in it. When do you think they will start releasing more info on Windows 8?
redmonke
I bet more info will start coming out in 2010, but not until 2011/2012 will we get a glimpse of it.
Flames
2011 we will probably start getting our BETA's correct? It's scheduled for release sometime in 2012.

It just feels trashy, they do Win7 but they are working on Win8 RIGHT after making Win7. I thought Win7 was suppose to fix everything in Vista, but now their are more things wrong in Win7? Well for now my computer can't handle Vista so, until I get a new one I'll just admire, and watch for updates.

They said they're making a 128bit version for 8. You think they could have incorporated that into 7? Barely anything supports 64bit as it is.

Well I think the things they want to Windows 8 will be HUGE! They mentioned and improved way to access files. It's possible that if they wanted to add those big features to Windows 7, it would greatly delay the planned release for Windows 7.

lol your avatar doesn't really match. The Slayer skill icon on top of a Windows Security icon? Come on man.... biggrin.gif

When do you guys think we can expect Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Service Pack 3 for Windows Vista?
EDIT: I don't really understand very well the difference between 64-bit and 32-bit. If a 128-bit Windows was released, what would the difference be? Just better performance for games?

It's just a different architecture between the hardware and the software. Modern hardware is 64bit and there's 64bit OSes, but software that takes advantage of it is pretty rare.

I think they may be going a little overboard with 128bit, but I guess it pushes the standard. biggrin.gif

309485009821345068724781056 terabytes of RAM? Who needs that much? Didn't think so.

1.) They already made accessing files a snap, correct me if I'm wrong?

Any students in college/university in the UK can take take advantage of this offer to get windows 7 home premium/professional for just £30!

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/studentoffer/

Also no windows 2000 on the list? I would have voted that but I guess my vote goes to 7.

-___________________________________________

Maybe a new section or some kind of event I don't know. smile.gif

1) Probably when I stupidly corrupted the startup sequence (don't ask, I meddle with things way too much tongue.gif), had no recovery disc and thought I was going to lose three massive essays that I'd never backed up (so basically it was all my own fault). Luckily I managed to transfer them to an external hard drive through a command prompt in the recovery partition (the actual recovery was destructive so I couldn't use it). Basically I've had no problems with the exception of cases where I poked around way too much biggrin.gif

2) I've had very few problems since I installed 7 really. If I had to say some I'd probably just say overheating (again my fault for dropping the laptop down the stairs) and occasional driver niggles because I'm using pre-release versions.

That's weird...I had a few problems with FF which was why I went back to Chrome, but not THAT many. Did you do a clean or upgrade install (you've probably said at some point but I can't remember)? If it was an upgrade try reinstalling FF, upgrades can sometimes really mess up certain programs.

Yea it was an upgrade. My brother hasn't had any problems and I did a clean install for him (went from Windows 7 RC > Vista > Windows 7 Ultimate).

I may do that later. Is it going to delete my addons if I uninstall? sad.gif

I see everybody stopped using Opera 10 then... it's a good browser but the incompatibility is just irritating.

I also have a Windows 7 RC on my virtual computer.
I wonder how it will be different in the released one... maybe more designs.
But i wonder if i could use the Windows XP's VSs, they look good and have alot of nice ones, like my current copycat of OS X theme.
I hope so, because that didnt work in Vista i heard.
And i think they have stronger guard on the uxtheme.dll now...

It's still possible to modify uxtheme.dll to allow the installation of custom themes, but XP visual styles definitely won't work because 7 uses a different window manager.

When Vistaglazz updates I'm pretty sure it will be compatible with Windows 7.

I find that the final release is a bit faster than the RC.
