Okay so, what does you being Melee-based or Ranged-based or Mage-based have anything to do with combat in PvP, since your levels decide how high you hit and your armour decide how much damage you take from the combat triangle?
Or am I wrong?

The game's ability to judge combat levels is painfully broken. Focusing on just one stat allows a person to stay at a low combat level while being much stronger then their level suggests. So basically PKing in Runescape is broken.
So if you mix range and magic then you will be vulnerable to pures.

It was worse in runescape classic when there were level 7-10s with god spells and charge.

Basically, if you train melee, you become melee based. That means, it takes 20 or so (idk) range/mage levels to level combat.
