Looking into buying a smart phone, was leaning towards HTC but what do you guys think?

(I think I'm using smart phone to mean more powerful phones, don't really understand the difference hehe)

Thanks smile.gif

HTC are probably the best, i'd look into something with Sense.

HTC touch pro 2 is nice.

There are many smartphones and PPCs.
HTC makes some good ones, like the ones with Android, but it doesnt have too much support for apps made in JavaME.
(Android uses a special Java binary)
The WM phones are mostly ok, but can be at high prices for newer ones, though some have reasonable price.

But what are you looking for to do in it?
That might decide alot, because Office is something you have on many platforms, but something like Exchange Server is limited.

Sorry for the late reply sad.gif

Sending emails etc. generally just a more powerful/advanced phone than the normal ones. Is Android any good, it looks pretty good?

My dad has an HTC Hero, Android is a very smooth and fast OS and the phone is great too. You can do a lot of stuff with it, so I say go for it.

Normal Java apps can be powerful and there is over a million of them because it was started around 2002 or 2003. (JavaME)
But Android has special binaries that arent common, which makes less support.
Though it looks nice.
Its a Linux distribiution in general, but you dont see any signs of it when its so cut off, they took away support for C++..

I guess its mostly between HTC phones?
Planning a newer or older?

Samsung have some few phones that are smartphones, like Innov8 and OmniaHD. (Both run S60)
Nokia make lots, but not as many that look good. (Suggestion for an eyecandy? X6.)

Do you mostly want touch or non-touch device?

The iPhone is a great phone if you can get it. Blackberries are pretty good, more business oriented. HTC makes some good phones, too (the android ones).

I wouldn't recommend LG. Their "smart" phones feel gimicky and like a toy. More like something someone 12-15 would use. Motorolla has been doing pretty bad with smart phones, too.

Palm has the Pre which is good, and there's the new Pixi coming out later.

Samsung's phones are kinda like LG's in the way that they're kinda like a toy.

Modern Nokia phones are trash.

Thanks for the more detailed info there smile.gif

As to touch/non-touch I'm not really bothered.

Depends how much you want to spend really, will it be on a contract?

Most likely not - though I wouldn't mind as long as it wasn't ridiculously priced.

They arent, you probably just see the S40 phones then.
You better see before saying such, because beneath the surface it can hide alot of surprises.
In the list of great phones, Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia N900 and Nokia X6 as mentioned earlier.
They have good phones for buisness in the E-series, where you often get Office with it. (Not MS, but something called OfficeSuite, which also includes Adobe PDF)
The N-series is special phones, often great hardware. (The N900 is a shining example, where you also have a console just like in normal Linux)
The better phones they make are more hidden.

The N97 is an average phone with a terrible keyboard.

N900 has no MMS, no portrait mode (only landscape) and no multitouch?

The X6 has a terrible OS.

Nokia's phones are a joke. They're toys.

Who cares about multitouch? (Cap screens are not accurate, they have bad positioning compared to resistive screens.)
You also get handwriting recognition on most Nokias with touchscreen.
You can also add shortcuts to words, by writing a sign.
Its also possible to get multitouch even with resistive, they did that with a game on S60, and surely will on Maemo.
MMS can be added, as they already added portrait mode too.
Its Linux, remember, full customization without limits.
And X6 doesnt have bad OS, have you even tried S60 5th ed?
Its even a better resolution. (S60 v5 = 360x640 vs iphone = 320x480)
In combination with OmniaHD you have iphone performance, and can be much more. (Including AMOLED, which gives a great color quality, superior to any LCD and TFT.)
You also have ability to play and record HD video, which makes it the only phone that can.
That proves that all that limits S60 is hardware.
Nokia made a netbook too, Booklet 3G, which has incredible designs.
Watch this if you dont know how it looks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBuZUXZXBlY
Its in alu, and has HD screen, + alot of features never mentioned in any netbook before.

Okay, enough off-track.
You dont want on contract?
Will make the price almost same, just at once as i have seen it. (You sometimes save alot of money by buying without contract, over time.)
Another question, what about design? Any requirements on size? (Does it need to fit in your pocket?)

Btw, take a look at HTC Tattoo, its rated as great on a site i looked at. (on a scale from 1 to 6 it was rated 6)
Though not so good camera and QVGA screen. (Camera is 3Mp, acceptable for a phone.)
If you like Facebook, you have it integrated in the adressbook, and yup, its an Android phone.
