Short short version.

I did something stupid and tried to associate a file type with a program.
Program isn't on that list so I went through the Browse Option and thought after double clicking it would register to appropriate program.
Accidentally associated it to Adobe Reader which can't read the file type.

1. Can't figure out how to disassosciate the file type from the program.
2. Can't figure out how to get the program to show up in the list. The program is under the same directory pfft.gif.

Double click My Computer, select tools from the menu, click folder options, select the file types tab. I think you can handle it from there.

Select browse for file, and select the exe.

Fun tip: Most programs have file type association built into them and you can re-associate file types within the program's options.

I don't think you understand.
When I select the exe from the browse it doesn't register the exe and automatically associates with whatever is in the list therefore I want to insert the exe into the list.

Have you tried right-clicking the file and clicking "Open With>Choose Program"?

Yes, which brings me back to that menu.

All I asked was how to get the program to show up in the drop down menu...

Is it really this complicated?

If it wasn't so complicated, you probably would have figured it out. Post 2 and 5 answer your first question. Post 5 answers your second question. Browse for the program you want that file opened with and check the box to always open that program for that filetype. To be more technical with the Open, Edit, etc. options, you could go into the File Types tab of Folder Options and make your necessary changes there.

And my problem is that when I select the program to open it with from a different directory where it's located, it doesn't become part of the list nor does it register to that program. So since the first program in the drop down list is Adobe they automatically register to it because I can't get the program to show up in the list.

If you cannot get a program to associate with a file or filetype, that program is probably the problem. The two described methods will work pending the functionality of the program and file/filetype.

What filetype are you trying to open and what program would you like it opened with?
