NOTE: i'm not talking about the politics, or anything like that, it's pure tactical and their strategy

(yes, i put willem the conquerer in the list, even if he was one of the worst generals ever)

(sun tzu didn't really conquer, but his book is... wub.gif)

i know this list is hardly completed, i just couldn't make a list of 200 persons cute.png, i think these are one of the most fameus

Genghis Khan

I'm thinking Alexander. The others conquered more land, but with more time.
Caboose
Not Genghis...
littlejr5
Probably Caesar. He conquered all of Europe! Hitler did too though I guess....
smacky edgar
Genghis khan had the largest empire ever conquered and up kept, even if you don't count his son's taking over for him when he died.
Mohorak
Alexander was a brilliant military mind that probably would have kept his conquests controlled if he hadn't died so early.
Emanick
Genghis Khan didn't have incredible tactical ability, he just had a freakin' insane army and a vicious technique that kept everyone in line. "Might makes right" without any rudimentary conscience to get in the way, not brilliance.

I voted for Alexander the Great; his tactical ability and effectiveness was second to nobody else on the list, as far as I could recall. There were better generals in terms of pure strategic brilliance, but none who remotely approached his achievements.
Scrum
I'm surprised not to see a Brit on here, since we had an empire spanning 1/3 of the world.

But I agree with Emanick, Alexander the Great was probably the best.

The dark grey is the countries Hitler's Germany conquered
The light grey is neutral countries
The white is countries who were not conquered.

Yes, it's the majority of Europe, but not all of it.

I would have to say Casanova. If you know what i mean....eyebrows.gif

He had sex with a bunch of women. Thats what i meant.
Finway
Genghis Khan, simply because he destroyed so many empires and acquired arguably the largest empire in history.
Birthday
Obviously Ghengis because he's the only one featured in an Age of Empires game.

Alexander was pretty smart but he was going to burn out early no matter what. He was was set up for it his whole life.
Caesar pretty much already had the roman empire set when he came to power
Napoleon invaded Russia. Great conquerors know that you just don't invade Russia.
Genghis Khan kicked ass and took names.
Hitler: See Napoleon.
Sun Tzu wrote a book. Good for him.

I voted for Genghis.

No. I see the motto of a deranged mind.

I'm suprised nobody else voted for hannibal

i'm quite sure he actually is the best in tactical, influence, strategy....

if carthage had actually supplied him with more soldiers, rome would have been destroyed!
Necho2
In terms of tactical brilliance, Hannibal and Alexander are definitely up there, but I think Caesar combines tactical, strategic, and diplomatic ability better than any of the others. He defeated the Gauls utterly, and beat the republicans in Greece, Africa, and Spain. He was preparing an assault against Parthia when he was assassinated, and if he had managed to go through with it, I think he would have managed to put Alexander in the shade.

Genghis Khan and probably Akbar, but Aurangzeb got the Mughal empire to its highest point.

Well, Rome did succeed Greece as the dominant world power, so if he had had enough time, it might have turned out differently.

I believe both of them to be grammatically (if not typographically) correct, but "Who Do You Think Was the Greatest 'Conqueror' In History would have been better.

There is nothing in the poll about the smartest conqueror in history. Genghis might not be as brilliant as Alexander, but he definitely kicked the most ass.

If Hitler had of changed his strategy somewhat, I think he'd have done a lot better.
Though, I voted for Ghengis Khan. He conquored most of the known world with a bunch of tribes.

Respect, bro.
Mohorak
Genghis Khan wouldn't even have conquered anything, just destroyed it completely, unless one of his generals advised him to. Alexander was more of a brilliant military genius in my mind, because he relied more on tactics (as far as I can see), while Khan relied on terrorism and sheer numbers.

The odds stacked against both Alexander and Khan plus their use of strategy to better effect makes both equally great generals. With regards to tactics, both cannot be compared to each other. Alexander used a combination of the Greek Phalanx formation as the shield of his army whilst the sword was his Macedonian inspired cavalry. It was a perfect combination.

Khan meanwhile used his mounted archers and cavalry to equally good effect. His army was a war machine with the organisation and communication that made them the most feared force of the age. Capable of crushing China and the Byzantine Empire.

Both great. Both equally brilliant.

Terrorism, sheer numbers, and freaking ingenious politics. He allowed conquered cultures to keep their religions and several freedoms, and in turn took their science. He didn't only "destroy", he assimilated. Steel swords from the Arabs, gunpowder, engineering, and many other things from the Chinese, etc.

Genghis Khan was the FREAKING BORG

Alexander the Great controlled many lands, one of them being Egypt. He was an effective ruler because he allowed the conquered lands to keep their customs and government. Him being the leader and allowing their government, he became a pharoah of Egypt. All of my post was in reference to Morte's which should have been enough of a hint of a foreign ruler.
