It was starting to snow. Jacob was running, in an excited state. He was only four, and this was his first snowstorm. Molly, my older sister, was sitting by the window, gazing out. Mother and Father were by the fireplace, trying to get a fire started.
OK, ok, let me explain. My name is Peter Steele. I live in Italy, and the year is 2015. We live in a quiet suburban neighborhood, about 20 miles south of Rome. I'm speaking English because, in 2010 it became the national language. We go about our business, quietly, without making a fuss. I go to middle school, and am in grade 7.
Jacob started shouting 'Let's go outside, let's go outside!' Mother just told him to be patient, and that we'd go out tomorrow, probably. Jacob started whining, and Mother took him away for his nap. Father called me over to the window, by the fire.
'Son, look. A beautiful snowfall.' '
Yeah' I agreed. And it was.
As I was setting the table for diner, Jacob woke up from his nap. He was whining, Molly had her music playing, the dishwasher was running. It was very hectic, but Mother, as good as ever, took charge of the situation. Within five minutes, the whole place was calm and quiet. I never could understand the magic that she had.
As we were eating Mother's special homemade spaghetti, Father announced that we would go out and play in the snow, first thing in the morning. I was so excited, I could barely stand it. It had been years since I'd seen snow. And, the last snow had been an ugly gray color, on account of all the bad junk it the atmosphere.
But, no, this was a beautiful white snow, as pristine as an old Christmas card. Oh yeah, that reminds me, It was almost Christmas! I hope to get the XXII Yamaha Dirt Bike that I'd asked for, It's the top of the line, and very nice! After we finished dinner, Molly and I began to wash, and put away the dishes.
After we'd finished, Molly went off to her room, Jacob was put down to sleep, and I went ahead to my room. I wanted to get to sleep early because I wanted to play in that snow! Call me childish, but I love snow! It's so soft, and cold, and rare. Very rare in these times. On account of all the pollution in the atmosphere.
Well, I got to sleep easy, but I certainly didn't wake up that easy. It was 9:30 when I woke up, and I went into the kitchen. Something seemed odd, but then I realized that the house was empty. I looked around a bit, and confirmed that the house was, in fact, empty. 'They probably are already outside' I thought. I was hungry, and decided to make my own breakfast, then go play in the snow. I put some bacon, eggs, and a slice of toast on to cook, and started reading my book.
After I'd eaten, I got dressed. I put on my shoes, and ventured to the door. I opened it, lo and behold, it was a Christmas wonderland! The walk had already been shoveled, my father probably did that, and I went out into the road. I didn't see my family, which was odd. Then I noticed that their car was gone. 'They're at the store' I murmured to myself.
I then noticed a large pile of snow, all ready for me to jump into. I got a good, running start, and jumped...into hell. I saw nothing but white, but my skin was burning. My clothes were dissolving. I scrambled out, and just managed to get to the road. I noticed that my hands were covered in burn marks, and I was still burning.
My vision faded out, and the last thought I had was
'What about Jacob?'
I awoke in a hospital. I later found out that a neighbor had seen me jump, and rescued me. He had driven me to the nearest hospital, where I had received medical treatment. I learned that, instead of snow, what I'd jumped into was far worse. White Phosphorous, or 'Satan's Snow' was everywhere. Apparently, American scientists had planned it all. Italy was now at war with America. As was Germany, France, Spain, and Britian. All had the same thing lain upon the countries. America was trying to take over the world.
...And so the war went on. Neither side could hold the upper hand. When I was old enough to join the Italian army, I did. I enlisted as a paratrooper, and spent three years training. I fought in the great battles such as London, Antwerp, Los Angles, Paris, Atlanta, and, even Washington DC! Finally, after the Kavos, so named after the Greek word for 'good' had finally won the war, I settled down, back in Italy.
In the paratroopers, I'd been a mortar man. I was supplied with White Phosphorous rounds, and used them in every major engagement with the enemy. An eye for an eye, I said.
