Getting Around RuneScape

You must know how to walk in real life, but what about in a computer game, such as RuneScape? It depends on the game, but I'll tell you how it works in RuneScape, along with many other methods of getting around, too. Jagex has developed RuneScape to include lots and lots of transportation systems. The basic way is of course walking, but we have at least a dozen of other ways to use, so I have quite a few things to tell you.

The Basics

The basic system of moving in RuneScape is so simple that you just click on the spot you wish to move to, and your character moves if it's possible to easily do. Although there are few exceptions, such as agility obstacles, but that's not even walking anymore.

Player controls menu

Sometimes walking just can feel so boring and slow that you need something a bit quicker. Your option to faster moving is of course running. You can start running by opening Player Controls menu and click 'Run'. Pretty obvious, isn't it? Then your Energy will start to drain depending on the weight of stuff you're carrying. It will recovery automatically when standing or walking.

Running!

That was straight from Tutorial Island, although a fact that some may not know. Agility is a handy skill when running. The higher your agility level is, the faster your running energy will recover. If you had 99 agility, Energy would recover approximately 3 times faster than with only level 1 agility. Now that's some good reason to train Agility! Now to the quicker means of transportation.

Sneaky Shortcuts

In the RuneScape world there are several 'main roads' which connect the largest towns together. However, they're rarely the fastest routes to take. If you're trying to get from Draynor to Varrock, the shortest road goes through Falador! That's quite a lot of extra distance, but luckily you do not have to use the road. These are some pretty good shortcuts:

  • Lumbridge to Draynor and further west - Through the forest; there's even a clear path!
  • Draynor to north - Following the border wall of Asgarnia and Misthalin, by Draynor Manor.
  • Catherby to Ardougne - Southwest to the Legends Guild and then follow the road from the guild to Ardougne.
  • To Falador from the west - Climb over the broken wall behind the bank.
  • Canifis to Mort'ton - Underground passage down to 'The Hollows' and then a raft to Mort'ton (Must do In Search of the Myreque quest first)

Magical Ways

Teleport spells are indeed the quickest way to get to the larger towns. Assuming that you have the required Magic levels and Runes, of course. Law Runes can become quite expensive if you need them a lot. If you can afford them easily, then it's almost fun to just teleport from one place to another.

Casting a teleport spell

With high Magic levels you can also teleport others - if they accept, of course. If you've completed the extremely hard Desert Treasure quest, you can switch to Ancient Magicks, which has its own teleport spells. The required magic levels for teleport spells are as following.

Modern Magics

  • Varrock - Level 25
  • Lumbridge - Level 31
  • Falador - Level 37
  • Camelot - Level 45
  • Ardougne - Level 51 (Plague City quest required)
  • Watchtower - Level 58 (Watchtower quest required)
  • Trollheim - Level 61

Teleother Spells

  • Lumbridge - Level 74
  • Falador - Level 82
  • Camelot - Level 90

Ancient Magicks

  • Paddewa (Edgeville Dungeon) - Level 54
  • Senntisten (Digsite) - Level 60
  • Kharyrll (Canifis) - Level 66
  • Lassar (Ice Mountain) - Level 72
  • Dareeyak (Level 23 Wilderness) - Level 78
  • Carrallangar (Graveyard of Shadows; level 19 Wilderness) - Level 84
  • Annakarl (Demonic Ruins; level 47 Wilderness) - Level 90
  • Ghorrock (Ice Plateau; level 45 Wilderness) - Level 96

Sailing On The Sea

From the harbors spread throughout the coasts in RuneScape, you can travel to others by using the sea. Most of them require a small payment, which luckily isn't very large. Sailing isn't really the best mean of transport, as there are only a few short routes, and you don't have much of a choice. You just pay the small fee, wait for a little while, and you're done. Not the most efficient way to travel, but sometimes the only way.

A map of the ports in RuneScape

You can sail from Port Sarim to Karamja, the holy Island of Entrana (no weapons or armor allowed!), and to Crandor during the Dragon Slayer quest. there's a short connection between Ardougne and Brimhaven. After you've done The Fremennik Trials quest, you can sail from Rellekka to the small kingdom of Miscellania. From Cairn Isle on the western side of Karamja you can sail to the opposite side of the island, or to Port Khazard, although you can't go back from those. Port Khazard's only real use is Trawler fishing.

Spirit Trees

After you have completed Tree Gnome Village and preferably also The Grand Tree, you can use Spirit Trees to move quickly around the world. The tree north of Varrock is particularly useful. You just go and speak to the tree and it asks if you want to move to another.

There are a total of four Spirit Trees, two of them old and other two young. The young ones are above Varrock, which I've already mentioned, and just south of Ardougne. When you speak to either of them, they ask if you would like to be teleported to their home. Say yes, and you'll end up in Tree Gnome Village. Then you can speak to the old sentient and you can go to any of the other three trees.

It's a spirit tree!

The fourth and final tree is right in the middle of Gnome Stronghold. It's an old one, too, so you can get to any other spirit tree. The young ones always teleport you to Tree Gnome Village. Also, now that Farming is out, you can grow your own Spirit Tree on some of the spots for them (Etceteria, Port Sarim and Brimhaven). It requires level 83 Farming, takes over 60 hours to grow and you can only have one grown at a time. Still, it may be a good way to get elsewhere quickly. And remember, it's your personal tree, and others don't even see it.

Gnome Gliders

If you've been brave and strong enough to beat The Grand Tree quest, you can use Gnome Gliders to access different areas quickly. There are several places to get to with them. They're really efficient, and being free, nearly perfect. You just need to talk to a pilot near a glider and you'll instantly get a map to choose your destination from.

Beware, however, that you can't get back from the Digsite, since the pilot will perform a 'creative landing' as you arrive and you will crash. The possible destinations are:

  • Ta Quir Priw - The Grand Tree
  • Sindarpos - White Wolf Mountain
  • Lemanto Andra - The Digsite
  • Kar-Hewo - Al Kharid
  • Gandius - Karamja
  • Lemantolly Undri - Feldip Hills (after you've done the One Small Favour quest)

Also, if you've at least started the Monkey Madness quest, you can go to Blurberry's bar on the Grand Tree, speak to Daero and you'll be took to a secret glider hangar. From there you can fly to Crash Island, just by Ape atoll. Then speak to another Gnome there and you'll be taken to the island by a boat.

Magic Carpets

Gnome Air was once the only airline in RuneScape. Now it has a competitor: Ali Morrisane's Magic Carpet services. They have a total of five routes, which of only one is usable if you haven't done any quests. They work so simply that you just need to talk to a rug merchant (they are nearly impossible to miss!), select your destination and pay 200gp. Then, if your right hand (in which you hold weapons) is free, you just start to automatically fly towards your destination.

Magic carpet

The carpet lands softly and you hop up. Then if you want to go back, just speak to the rug merchant by the spot you landed. Unfortunately you have to pay the fee every time, which makes it pretty expensive on a long term.

Without any related quests, the only usable route is from Shantay Pass to northern Pollnivneach. After The Tourist Trap you can go from Shantay Pass to the Bedabin Camp. Whenyou've finished The Golem quest, a route to Ruins of Uzer from Shantay Pass opens. If you've managed to complete Icthlarin's Little Helper, routes from southern Pollnivneach to Menaphos and Sophanem open to you.

For more info about these, be sure to check out the Magic Carpets guide.

Carting Around

There are two cart 'systems' in RuneScape. One is the underground mine cart system run by Dwarves. Another is the jungle cart between Brimhaven and Shilo Village on Karamja, operated by two brothers. On Karamja, if you have completed Shilo Village quest, brothers Vigroy and Hajedy will transport you for a fee of 200gp. Although, if you don't have too much money with you, they will charge you a lot less.

The Dwarves' mine cart system, on the other hand, will move you between major Dwarven locations. You will need to start The Giant Dwarf quest before you can use it. You can go from Keldagrim to the passage under White Wolf Mountain for 100gp and to the Dwarven Mines beneath Ice Mountain for 150gp. You will just have to buy a ticket from a conductor and then hop on to the cart. It's that easy to use them.

Enchanted Jewelry

Almost every gem in RuneScape is possible to enchant, and some of them can then be used to teleport. When enchanted, a Sapphire Necklace will turn into a Burthorpe Games Necklace. Emerald Rings can be similarly turned to be a Ring of Dueling. Diamond Ring can be made to helpful Ring of Life. Then there is the expensive and hard-to-make Dragonstone Amulet, which will become the Amulet of Glory with enchanting. All these can be used to teleport by rubbing them. Just right-click the item and select 'rub'.

A Games Necklace can move you to the cellar of Burthorpe castle. A Ring of Dueling can take you to the Dueling Arena – as the name says - and to Castle Wars entrance. They have 8 uses and will melt away when every one is used. Ring of Life has just one use, but then one time is really helpful: If you fall below 10% in hitpoints, you will be automatically teleported to Lumbridge with all your items. Amulet of Glory, on the other hand, has other properties too and will not melt away after its four uses have been used. Instead it can be recharged in the Heroes' Guild. On those 4 uses, you can teleport to Al Kharid, Draynor, Edgeville and Shilo Village.

Other Methods

EctophialEctophial: As a part of reward of Ghosts Ahoy quest, you'll get an Ectophial. By emptying it you will be teleported to the Ectofuntus just north of Port Phasmatys. You can recharge it by filling it on the Ectofuntus, so it might be wise to do it straight away.

LyreEnchanted lyre: While doing The Fremennik Trials quest, you will get a lyre. After completing the quest, you can go to the altar south of Rellekka and sacrifice another Raw Shark to Fossegrimen, as you did in the quest. Now when you play it, you will be teleported to Rellekka. Unfortunately you have to sacrifice a Raw Shark every time you want to enchant it, so it's not very convenient.

Wizards' guild portals: If you have a Magic level of 66, you can enter the Wizards' Guild in Yanille. On the second floor of the building there are some magical portals. The portal on the eastern wall will teleport you to Wizards' tower south of Draynor, southern to Dark Wizards' tower south of Taverley and west to Thormac the Sorcerer's house by the Legends' Guild.

Teleport lever: A small hut behind King Lathas's castle in Ardougne contains a special lever. By pulling it you will be teleported to another hut, this time slightly broken one. It is in really deep Wilderness. This is widely used by PKers to get quickly to wild, so be beware. There may be someone waiting for you.

Wilderness teleport lever

Desert Outlaw: If you speak to 1 of the guards in the Shantay Pass near Al Kharid and tell him that you're an outlaw, you'll be arrested. Don't pay the fine, and you'll be transferred to an "High Security Prison." This prison happens to be the 1 in Port Sarim, and you will be outside of the cell. It's a quick way to get to Port Sarim!

Shantay

Oh dear, you're dead!Dying: Sometimes dying may be a good thing. Since you always respawn in RuneScape, it can be a quick way to get to Lumbridge. Just remember that you keep just three items, or none if you're skulled. Although Protect Items prayer will always save one extra. If you've done the Recruitment Drive quest, you'll instead be brought back to life in Falador if you choose. Most people think that Falador is by far a better place to respawn than Lumbridge, but if you would like to change it back, go and speak to Tiffy Cashien in the park.
