Hitpoints, also called "hp" and "hits", are what gives your character life in RuneScape. It is important to have a high level because this will help you fight longer. If your hitpoints ever reach 0, you will die and respawn at your respawn point which is explained later on.
The Basics
Hitpoints is the only skill in RuneScape that doesn't let you do or make something new when you reach a certain level. Levels in hitpoints are simply used as your hitpoints themselves. For instance, if your hitpoints level is 15/15, that means you have 15 hitpoints. Every hitpoint level counts as 0.25 levels in combat, so every four hitpoint levels equal one combat level.
Raising Your Hitpoint Level
The most effective way of raising Hitpoints is through combat. Every time you successfully attack your opponent, your hitpoints increase in experience equal to how much damage you've caused plus a little more. For instance, if someone hit a 10 on some monster, their hitpoints would get 13.3 xp (10 x 1.33). You may use Melee, Range, or Magic to raise your hitpoints. There are also a few other ways of getting hitpoint xp, but they are not as effective. They will be broken down between freeplay and members below.
Note: Remember that all freeplay options are also available to members.

Preventing Death
There are several ways that you can use to prolong dying or gain additional hitpoints. These include jewelry, prayers, and a few potions.
Jewelry
These jewelries can teleport you away when your hitpoints drop to a certain point, speed up the hitpoints recovery time, and even restore some of your hitpoints.
-
Ring
of Life: If you are wearing this and your hitpoints drop below 10%, it will teleport
you to your spawn point. Note that it is still possible to die while wearing
this, if you reach 0 hitpoints without dropping below 10% first. It will turn
into dust once the charge has been used up.
Phoenix Necklace: When the wearer's hitpoints drop below 20% of their max hitpoints, their hitpoints will be restored to 30% of their max. It has a priority over the Ring of Life and will turn into dust after one use.
Bracelet of Inoculation: Protects against disease up to 250 damage.
Bracelet of Regeneration: Doubles your Hitpoint recovery rate and has no limit.
Saradomin's
Brew: Temporarily increases your max hitpoints by 15. This bonus will decrease
by one each minute.
Guthix's Rest Tea: Temporarily boosts your hitpoints by 5 if you have full
health.
Prayers
Prayer can be a useful ally in combat as it can restore your hitpoints faster, protect you from certain attacks, and heal you partially.
Rapid Heal: Doubles the restore rate for Hitpoints. This requires level 22 Prayer.
-
Protect From Magic: This will protect you from magical attacks. It requires level 37 Prayer.
-
Protect From Missiles: This will protect you from ranged attacks. It requires level 40 Prayer.
-
Protect From Melee: This will protect you from close melee attacks. It requires level 43 Prayer.
Redemption: If your
hitpoints drop below 10%, you'll be healed 25% of your maximum Prayer. Also,
this drains all of your Prayer Points when used. This requires level 49 Prayer.
Please note that it is still possible to die while wearing this, if you reach
0 hitpoints before dropping below 10% of your total hitpoints.
Potions
These potions can be used to increase your maximum hitpoints and cure poison and disease.
Guthix's Rest: Cures some poison, restores Run Energy & boosts Hits by 5 if you have full health. Requires level 18 Herblore and you must have talked to Sanfew during the One Small Favour quest to be able to make this.
Saradomin's Brew: Increases your Defense by 20% and Hitpoints by 15%, but lowers your Strength, Magic, and Ranged by 10%.
Sanfew Serum: When drunk, will give the effects of a Super Restore and an Anti-poison potion and will also cure disease. Can be used as a weapon against Nail Beasts.
Relicym's Balm: Cures disease and can be used as a weapon against the orange Broodo Victims (level-60).
Spells
The following spells are Lunar Spells and require the Lunar Magicks spellbook along with completion of the Lunar Diplomacy quest.
Cure Other: Cures another player of poison. Requires level 68 Magic.
Cure Me: Cures yourself of poison. Requires level 71 Magic.
Cure Group: Cures a group of people of poison. Requires level 74 Magic.
Heal Other: Lets you heal another player. Requires level 92 Magic.
Heal Group: Lets you heal a group of people. Requires level 95 Magic.
Dream Spell: Triples your Hitpoint recovery rate. Must be cast when not in combat. If you are disturbed when casting, you will stop dreaming and will have to recast the spell. Requires level 79 Magic.
Dying
Dying in RuneScape can happen to anyone. It could happen to a new player, or an experienced player. It means possibly losing items and you have to respawn. Dying happens when you hitpoints reach 0. Your character throws their hands up and falls to the ground and then you respawn at your respawn point. The default respawn point for both free-to-play and members is Lumbridge Castle, but members have the option of changing their respawn point to either Falador or Camelot once they have completed certain quests. Complete Recruitment Drive to change your respawn point to Falador or complete the Knight Waves Training Ground mini-game after the King's Ransom quest to change your respawn point to Camelot.
When you die, you lose all of your items, except for your three most valuable ones. The item's value is determined by both the Grand Exchange and the General Store/Low Alchemy price: the higher of the two values is the one that the item's value is based on. You may use the Protect Items prayer if you have level 25 Prayer. This will let you keep an extra if you die, but you must activate it before your hitpoints level reaches 0 for it to have an effect. If you become 'skulled', you will lose every item you have.
Becoming 'skulled' can only happen in two situations: entering the Abyss,
or while playing the mini-game Bounty Hunter. You may prevent yourself from becoming
'skulled' by wearing an Abyssal Bracelet (enchanted diamond bracelet) when entering
the Abyss. If you choose to play Bounty Hunter and become skulled, nothing can
remove it except death or leaving the Bounty Hunter arena. You may use the 'Protect
Item' prayer to keep your most valuable item if you are skulled. There are some
times in Bounty Hunter that this prayer will not work though.
Hit Splats
Called 'hit splats' in the skill menu, splats are the different colored splotches that appear on your character during and after combat. There are four different kinds, two of which are members only.
Blue Splats
These hit splats are the only ones you want to appear on your character. It simply means that your opponent has not dealt any damage to you.
Red Splats
The number that appears on this hit splat refers to the number of hitpoints lost during the last strike.
Green Splats
Green hit splats stand for any poison damage. Drink an anti-poison potion or use the 'Cure Me' spell to cure yourself.
Gold Splats
The last hit splat, gold, stands for disease. This splat doesn't affect your hitpoints at all, but will effect a random stat. Drink a Relicym's Balm to cure yourself.
Food
While having many hitpoints is good, it is also important to have some food with you so you can heal you hitpoints. In this section, the different kinds of foods will be discussed.
Common Foods
These are the foods that are the most common in RuneScape. They are not necessarily the best in the game, but they are fairly easy to obtain and they heal decently enough. See the Fishing or Cooking guides for more information.
Note: When a food has a number of bites after it, the bites are referring to the number of times you must click on it to eat it completely.
Trout: Heals 7 hitpoints
Salmon: Heals 9 hitpoints
Tuna: Heals 10 hitpoints
Cake: Heals 12 hitpoints. Three bites.
Lobster: Heals 12 hitpoints
Swordfish: Heals 14 hitpoints
Monkfish: Heals 16 hitpoints
Shark: Heals 20 hitpoints
Best Foods
These foods are the best in RuneScape. They all heal at least 20 hitpoints and a few even give stat bonuses.
Mushroom and Onion Potato: Heals 20 hitpoints
Shark: Heals 20 hitpoints
Sea Turtle: Heals 21 hitpoints
Pineapple Pizza: Heals 22 hitpoints. Two bites.
Tuna and Corn Potato: Heals 22 hitpoints
Wild Pie: Heals 22 hitpoints. Also gives +5 Slayer and +4 Range bonuses. Two bites.
Manta Ray: Heals 22 hitpoints
Summer Pie: Heals 22 hitpoints. Also gives +5 Agility and +10% energy bonuses. Two bites.
Bad Food
These foods are items that can be eaten, but they will lower your stats, poison you, or lower your hitpoints.
Karambwan: You must have completed the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest to be able to cook this. If you cook this for a short time it will be poisonous. Cooking this for a long time makes it edible, healing you 18 hitpoints when eaten.
Rock Cakes: If eaten, these will damage you a random amount.
Nightshade: Does 15 damage when eaten. You must be wearing gloves when you pick it or you will be poisoned.
Poison Chalice: When drunk it can deal up to 49 damage, but may also heal up to 32 hitpoints. It can also raise a random skill by one level.
Cape of Achievement
If you finish the long road to level 99 Hitpoints, you now will have the ability to buy the Hitpoint Cape of Achievement. You can buy it from Surgeon General Tafini, found in the Duel Arena hospital north of the Duel Arena, for 99,000gp. The emote description for the cape is as follows: "Your character is struck by an arrow as your clothes disappear. You are then struck by another arrow as your skin disappears, and then struck with a third arrow as your muscles disappear and your bones show. Your character then returns to normal, pulls all three arrows out of his body, and throws them away."
