If you're looking for a challenge and perhaps even some profit, then hunting the Metal Dragons in Brimhaven Dungeon might be just for you. These beasts come in three varieties: Bronze, Iron and Steel, and are level 139, 189, and 246, respectively.

The Basics

Recommended Levels

  • 43 prayer
  • Optional: 32 agility (to get past the stepping stones).
  • Level 70+ Combat to fight Bronze Dragons.
  • Level 80+ Combat to fight Iron Dragons.
  • Level 95+ Combat to fight Steel Dragons.

You don't need the exact levels to fight these dragons, but it is recommended if you want to fight more then 2 dragons a trip. Steel Dragons are very tough opponents so you shouldn't try fighting them until you are very experienced both in combat levels and fighting metal dragons. Also keep in mind those are about the minimum levels you should try fighting a dragon. Note that to teleport out, you should have a "one click" teleportation method like a teleport tablet, Ectophial or an elf teleportation crystal (an Ardougne Teleport or an Amulet of Glory can work well too).

If you are a lower leveled player you can substitute a couple Anti Fire-Breath Potions for food. For melee, you should have at least 4 potions, and for magic you should have at least 13 (4-doses). The equipment listed below is generally for higher leveled players because of course, have higher defense so they won't need as much food but you will still need several Anti Fire-Breath Potions.

What You Need

  • 875gp (905gp if you're not on the island already).
  • A hatchet.
  • An Anti Dragon Fire Shield.

Equipment

Though there are 3 different combat styles in RuneScape, only melee and magic is recommended as with both you can use an anti dragon breath shield without losing power. To use one with ranged, you'll need to sacrifice either speed or power to use one.

Melee (With Prayer)

Melee backpackMelee equipment

  • Helmet: Initiate or Proselyte for prayer bonus.
  • Body: Initiate or Proselyte for the prayer bonus.
  • Legs: Again, you're going to want to use Proselyte for its prayer bonus.
  • Boots: Armored boots (adamant or rune recommended), climbing boots, or white boots for added prayer bonus (white boots give the same defense bonus as black boots but also give a +1 prayer bonus).
  • Gloves: Gauntlets or gloves from Recipe For Disaster.
  • Cape: Legends, Obsidian, Fire Cape, or Skill/Quest Cape.
  • Weapon: A Dragon mace or scimitar, or a whip (you can bring a ddp++ and/or a dragon battle axe for their special attack).
  • Ring: A Ring of Wealth or life.
  • Amulet: A Power or Fury amulet, or you can use a holy or unholy symbol for added prayer bonus.
  • Food: Lobsters or better, though food that takes a while to make (like potatoes) aren't the best idea as they can take a while to make so monk fish or shark is a better choice.
  • Potions: About 15 prayer potions and some combat or super stat potions, and you can substitute food for Anti Fire-Breath potions or vice-versa.

This method is highly recommended as you won't need much food and you can last long with a good prayer bonus and level, though prayer potions can range from 7,000-8,000gp. You can also switch the Anti Fire-Breath potions with food, though it will leave you more vulnerable to their attacks.

Magic

Magic is a common style to use for fighting metal dragons because it doesn't involve prayer because if you attack a metal dragon from a distance, they will just stand there using fire breath, so lots of Anti Fire-Breath potions is highly recommended.

Mage backpackMage equipment

  • Helmet: A Mystic, Infinity, Splitbark, Farseer, Ahrim or Lunar Hat.
  • Body: Mystic, Infinity, or Ahrim body.
  • Legs: Mystic, Infinity, or Ahrim skirt.
  • Boots: Mystic, Infinity, Splitbark, or Lunar Boots, you could use armored boots but you won't get into too much combat so you should wear a different kind of boot over a metal one.
  • Gloves: Mystic, Infinity, Splitbark, Lunar, or gloves obtained from Recipe for Disaster, or if you're using a bolt spell then wear chaos gauntlets.
  • Cape: A God Cape will work best for its magic bonus.
  • Weapon: A magic staff (its enchantment doesn't matter.)
  • Ring: A Ring of Wealth or life.
  • Amulet: An Amulet of Power or Fury.
  • Food: Lobsters or better, recommended monk fish or shark.
  • Potions: Anti Fire-Breath Potions are extremely recommended.
  • Runes: You should bring the runes needed to cast fire bolt, blast or wave, though you don't need to specifically use fire spells. If you use a bolt spell, then wear chaos gauntlets obtained from the Family Crest quest.

You should bring about 4-6 food just in case you get in some trouble, and about the rest of you're inventor should be filled with Anti Fire-Breath potions as well as the usual items and runes.

Getting There

Once you have all the equipment needed for your adventure you can finally head to the dragons.

Firstly, you're going to need to get in to Brimhaven Dungeon, here's where the 875gp comes in. The dungeon entrance will by watched by Saniboch who will want an entrance fee, just right click on him and then click "Pay Saniboch" and then you will have entrance to the dungeon. Remember that if you leave or die in the dungeon, you'll have to pay Saniboch again to re-enter and if you pay him, then log off you can still enter the dungeon.

Once inside, follow the map until you find the metal dragons and remember that you need 34 Agility to cross the stepping stones, so if you don't have the agility level, you'll have to use the ladders to get there.

When you reach some vines, just click on the vines and you will chop at them until they disappear, then you will walk past and the vines will re-grow.

Note: Keep in mind that wild dogs and black demons wander into the bronze dragon area extremely frequently, and they sometimes walk into the Iron or Steel Dragon area but it's less frequent.

Extra Notes

  • Metal dragons have a unique fire breath only shared by the King Black Dragon. It allows them to attack from a distance like a range/mage attack, though prayer will not protect you.
  • If using magic, attack your targets from a distance (at least 2 steps away) so they'll use their fire balls against you, so make sure to drink Anti Fire-Breath potions, and you can hide behind obstacles at the bronze dragons.
  • If you have sound on, make sure to hear the sound when your prayer drops to zero, that shows that your Anti Fire-Breath potion just wore out, and an Anti Fire-Breath potion lasts about 6 minutes.
  • Metal Dragon are the only monsters in RuneScape that drop Dragon Plate Legs and Plate Skirts.
  • If you fight a Steel Dragon, you have a better chance of obtaining a dragon plate skirt or plate legs, and an iron dragon has a better chance of getting a drop then a bronze dragon.
  • You can fight metal dragons without prayer, though you will have to be about level 100 to be effecting even against bronze dragons. So you can try it though it is not recommended. You can also use range but you'll have to use a crossbow or darts to be able to use a anti dragon fire shield, and if you do try this you should have at least 70+ ranged.
  • Metal Dragons have a very high defense rating, so if you lack attack or strength then it could take a while to kill a dragon.
  • Even if are a high leveled player you should still start at bronze dragons for a while and work your way up so you get the hang of hunting Metal Dragons.
