Whether you're in it for the hunt, or the rewards, the Giant Mole can be an interesting monster. This giant level 230 mole can put up a fight, so you better be prepared. Start out by talking to Wyson the Gardner in Falador Park. He will tell you about a big mole that's been digging up his garden.

What to Bring

Equipment

Although you can mage or range the mole, it is highly recommended you melee him. Because of this, the guide will not go over range or mage techniques. This is the recommended gear for killing the mole.

Recommended melee equipment
  • Helmet: Rune Helm (would go with full rune), Goblin helmet (If you use this you won't need a lantern), Initiate or Proselyte Sallet, Neitiznot Helm
  • Platebody: Rune plate, fighter torso or better, Initiate or Proselyte Hauberk, Black D'hide body (lightweight armour)
  • Plate legs: Rune or better, Initiate or Proselyte, Black D'hide Chaps
  • Cape: Spotted/Spottier cape or a stat boosting cape like legends cape
  • Amulet: Amulet of glory, power, or fury, holy/unholy symbol
  • Weapon: Dragon Dagger (P++),
  • Shield: Rune kite, Obsidian, Dragon Square, Rune Defender, Zammorak/Saradomin/Guthix book
  • Boots: Boots of Lightness, Rune Boots or better
  • Gloves: Barrows Gloves, Gauntlets, or none
  • Ring: Ring of Wealth or Life

Inventory

Recommended inventory
  • Tinderbox, Light source (candle or lantern), Spade. These are required if you want to go into the caves.
  • 5 or more Prayer Potions (depends on how much times you want to kill the mole in one run, and your combat)
  • 2+ Super Energy Potions
  • 1 Super Attack and Strength Potion (if you are a lower level and want to hit high on the mole, then use this. Otherwise, it's optional)
  • Abyssal whip or some other Dragon item other then a Dragon Dagger (P++)
  • Fill most of the rest of your inventory with lobsters

The Mole Tunnels

Now for the hard part. Killing the mole can be a fun, but annoying hunt. First thing you should do is dig in to the tunnels with your spade. Dig on top of one of the mole hills in Falador park.

Killing the Giant Mole

Now time for you to take on the mole. Find the mole in the caves, and turn on protect from melee prayer (it's not needed to kill the mole, but you will use more food if you don't pray). And use your super attack and strength potions if you brought them. You should keep prayer on for the first part of the fight, using prayer potions when you need to.

When you hit it, use your dragon dagger's special until you use out the entire bar. Hopefully, the mole will become poisoned (this won't happen with a regular dagger). After this, switch to your other weapon for the rest of the fight. Around halfway through, it will burrow in to the ground, splattering you with mud and possibly extinguishing your light source (bringing a covered light source like a lantern will prevent this from happening).

The mole is burrowing into the ground

Now the mole is hiding somewhere in the caves. You will have to find the mole, and try to get as much damage on it before it burrows again. After you hit it, you will probably only get two or three hits on it, so try to make them count. If you have anything in it, you can try to hit your special on it before it burrows. The mole may burrow a couple squares away, or across the tunnels. You do not need to pray, as the mole won't get a lot of hits on you, but you may if you need to.

You will do a lot of running. If you need to, drink a super energy potion, or stop running. If you managed to poison it, the poison will damage it, so you may also want to look for a red dot on your minimap.

Teams

Another way you could kill the mole is bringing a friend (or a couple friends), and using a team. You would bring standard equipment. It is recommended that you use a Clan Chat on a Lootshare world. This way you can split the drops, and you can communicate through the chat. You will usually kill the mole faster and use less supplies.

The person with the highest Prayer Points and Hitpoints should attack the mole first, and turn on protect from melee. The mole will attack him, so the rest of the team does not need prayer potions. They should mainly have energy, attack, and strength potions. You could have one prayer potion in your inventory, just for those little times you get it alone.

Mole Drops

Here is an example of what the mole drops:

Possible drops from the giant mole

The mole has a 100% drop of either some mole claws or skins. You can trade these to Wyson for some nests, which will contain either rings or some seeds. You can farm or sell the seeds, and crush the nests with a Pestle and Mortar. You can sell them or make them in to Saradomin's Brew (you need 81 Herblore to make them).

List of Possible Drops

  • Iron arrows
  • Amulet of strength
  • Air runes (105)
  • Yew Logs (100)
  • Dragon medium helmet
  • Dragon Spear
  • Green, Crimson, gold charms (2)
  • Sharks
  • Blood Runes(15)
  • Mithril Platebody
  • Mole Claw
  • Big Bones
  • Mole Skin
  • Rune Battleaxe

Hints & Tips

  • The mole is weak to stab attacks, which is an attack style on your Dragon Dagger if you brought one.
  • If there is someone already killing the mole, then switch worlds. Don't steal their mole.
  • If you are running low on supplies, you can poison the mole, and then run behind a safespot, such as a stalagmite. This way the mole won't hit you, and will die of poison.
Stand behind a stalagmite for a safespot
  • The mole can hit up into the 20s, so using prayer and food is advised.
  • Use a bullseye lantern, candles make it too dark and you won't need a tinderbox.
  • It's always useful to have a teleport out. You could bring a one click tele like an ectophial (obtained from the Ghost Ahoy quest), or make sure your glory amulet has at least one charge.
  • Summoning can be very efficient at the Giant Mole. You could restore your run energy with some familiars, such as the Spirit Terrorbird, or hold your items. A very good use is that, when a familiar attacks the mole, and the mole burrows, your familiar will follow it. This means that it will lead you in the general direction of the mole.
  • If you poison the mole, it is possible it will burrow. If you are using Lootshare, this could mean your team is out of reach being in Lootshare. If you are using lootshare and the mole is poisoned, you may want to get it down to low health, then safespot it so you all can get the drops.
  • Another cheap alternative is to bring a weapon (along with spade, light, etc) and fight the mole and use prayer against it. When you die, just get a spade and light from the bank, and run in to the caves (make sure your respawn point is in Falador though).

That's about it. Now that you are prepared, head down to the mole caves and give that lazy mole a taste of your dagger. You may get a dragon medium helmet and many more goodies in your efforts.
