Classic Crafting:
Pottery, Leather & Jewelry

Crafting is both a profitable and useful skill in RuneScape. This part of the guide explains the basic parts of crafting, including pottery, leather making, and making jewelry. The second part explains crafting glass and making Battle Staffs.

Pottery Making

A great way to start of crafting is to make pottery, as it is really quite simple, and it gives plenty of experience.

  1. Mine some clay. You can find some places to mine it in the Mining guide.
  2. Fill a jug with water by using it with a sink or fountain. Use the water with the clay to get soft clay.
  3. Go to the Barbarian Village, and find the small building with a Pottery Wheel and Pottery Oven.
  4. Use the soft clay with the Pottery Wheel to make the pottery of your choice.
  5. Finally, use the pottery with the Pottery Oven to bake it into a useable item.

Leather Working

Crafting leather is another good way to begin crafting. It is just as easy to do as making pottery, but you will need some money to get started.

  1. Kill some cows, which can be found near Lumbridge and around Al Kharid. Be sure to pick up all the cow hides you can! Bring along some money, including:
    1. 1gp per cow hide.
    2. 20gp to cross the gate, if you haven't done the Prince Ali Rescue Quest yet.
    3. One needle costs 1gp, and threads cost 1gp each. Each thread lasts for 5 leather items.
  2. Go to Al Kharid, and once there, go east to the crafting shop. Buy a Needle and some thread.
  3. Go west to find the Tanner and talk to him. Select the option "Here's some cow hides, can I buy some leather now?" He will trade the hides and GP for leather.
  4. Now use the needle with the leather to make your leather items.

Crafting Jewelry

After you are a bit more advanced at crafting, it's time to move on to better things: jewelry. Jewelry can make a huge profit, and it gives lots of experience. Since this is a huge part of crafting, this section is split up into several sections.

The Basics

For each kind of jewelry you make, you will need several things to get started. Most of the tools can be bought at your local Crafting Shop in Al Kharid or Rimmington.

Necessities

  1. Bars - You will need to mine the ores, and then use the metal with a furnace.
    1. silver bar Silver Bars - Used to make Holy and Unholy Symbols.
    2. gold bar Gold Bars - Used to make Rings, Necklaces, and Amulets.
  2. Molds - After you make a bar of either metal, use the bar with the furnace to fill the mold with it.
    1. ring mold Ring Molds - For making rings.
    2. necklace mold Necklace Molds - For making Necklaces.
    3. amulet mold Amulet Molds - For making Amulets.
    4. holy symbol mold Holy Symbol Molds - For making Holy Symbols.
  3. Other Stuff - Some tools that could also come in useful.
    1. chisel Chisels - Useful if you want to cut gems.

To begin making jewelry, use a bar of either Silver or Gold with a furnace. This will bring up a menu of choices, depending on the metal you are using.

Gems

Once you become more experienced in crafting, you can put gems in your jewelry. This makes it more valuable, and gives even more experience. To put a gem in your jewelry you need to first cut it, and then select "yes" to put a gem in it while making your gold jewelry. You can sell them to the Gem Trader in Al Kharid or Falador.

Once you craft your Holy symbol, you can have Brother Jared, the "head-monk" of the monastery bless it for you. He will be upstairs, so you need to have at least 31 prayer to climb the ladder. Whenever you wear it, your prayers will last longer.

Stringing Amulets & Holy Symbols

  1. Once you craft your amulet or holy symbol, buy a pair of shearsshears from your local General Store.
  2. Find a sheep and attempt to shear it by using the shears with it, until you get some wool.
  3. Take the wool to a spinning wheel, found in Lumbridge, Falador, and the Barbarian Village. Use the wool with the sinning wheel to get a ball of wool.
  4. Use the ball of wool with the item to string it. Now you can wear it!

Enchanting Amulets

Enchanting an amulet will give a bonus when you are wearing it, depending on the kind of amulets you are enchanting. you need to first gather the correct Runes to cast the spell. Once you use the correct spell with the amulet, it's powered up.
