Sal's Realm of RuneScape
Classic Ranging

A rather useful skill to many PKers in the Wilderness, ranging allows you to attack your enemies from a distance, rather than close-up. Put a table or other obstacle between you and your prey to stay out of harm's way since they can't reach you.

Getting Started

Depending on how you prefer to fight, you should choose what kind of equipment to use to start ranging. Each weapon will be different than the other, since they are different types of weapons.

Regular Equipment
Equipment Advantages Disadvantages
Crossbows
  • Inflict more damage than regular bows.
  • You can wear a shield.
  • Short range of fire.
  • Fires slower than a bow.

Buying the Equipment

The best place to buy ranging equipment is Lowe's Archery Store, in Varrock. It's located between the General Store and the east bank. Here's a map to help you find it.

The member's archery shop in Catherby is where you can buy and sell stronger bows and arrows, as well as arrow heads.

Attack!

When you first start out ranging, the easiest way of gaining experience is to attack chickens, which are level 3. They have very few hits and are killed quickly, so yourone unlucky chicken arrows will not be stolen.

Chickens can be found in any local farm near Lumbridge, and you can safely hide behind any fence so they can't attack you. Be sure to pick up your arrows after each battle! And after just a few battles I was level 3 ranged! 1 ranged level

Various NPC's to Start Ranging

Name Level Ranged XP Hits
Chicken 3 26 3
Imp 5 28 7
Cow 8 36 7
Man 9 38 7
Darkwizard 13 50 12

Notes:

  • While ranging on enemies, it's normal that an arrow or 2 will be missing when you pick them up.
  • It's always good to have an obstacle between you and your enemy when you're ranging so they can't attack you.
  • For more info about making bows and arrows, see the Fletching Guide.
