So, you're not a Member in RuneScape? Want to become one and get around easily? Or do you have some questions about RuneScape Members that you'd like to have answered? If so, this is the guide for you!

The Basics

Before you become a Member in RuneScape, it's an advantage to be at least level 60 Combat. It's also good to have all of your Freeplay quests completed, so that you can make the most of your membership.

When you become a Member, a huge selection of things will be available to you:

  • Heaps of new areas - everything west of Falador is Members-Only, along with new parts of the map in the desert and northeast of Varrock. Members also have all of the area north of level 50 Wilderness to explore!
  • More than 5 times more bank space - never worry about having too much stuff!
  • Tons of new items - everything from foods to weapons and quest items!
  • More Random Events - Watchmen, Strange Plants and others!
  • More Dungeons & New Monsters!
  • Mini-Games!
  • And that's not all - check out the complete list on the official RuneScape site.

Recommended Quests

There are a few quests that are highly recommended that you complete when you first become a Member. These open up new skills, areas and other abilities for you:

  • Fishing Contest - allows you to use the passage under White Wolf Mountain, west of Taverley.
  • Tree Gnome Village - allows you to use Spirit Trees to teleport around RuneScape.
  • Grand Tree - allows you to use the Gnome Gliders for Transportation.
  • Priest in Peril - allows you to enter the land of Morytania, northeast of Varrock.
  • In Search of the Myreque - opens up a quick route to Mort'ton.
  • Tourist Trap - access to the new Member's desert; gives good experience.
  • Druidic Ritual - gives you the ability to use the Herblore skill.
  • Lost City - Ability to wield the Dragon Sword & Dagger; allows access to the Lost City of Zanaris.

For High Magic-Users

These quests have rewards benefiting those with a high Magic level, although the quest can be completed by anyone that meets the requirements.

  • Plague City - allows you to teleport to East Ardougne (level 51 Magic).
  • Watch Tower - enables you to teleport to Yanille (level 58 Magic)

Member Skills

There are several Members-Only skills available to you once you become a Member. Here you'll have an idea of how to start off on each skill. Of course, be sure to read the guides for each skill to, as they go into detail on every aspect of the skill.

Herblore

You can only start this skill after completing the Druidic Ritual Quest. It's a very useful skill, as it allows you to make potions with different effects.

You first need a Vial filled with water (use it with a Sink or Fountain to fill). Put an identified herb inside first, and then add the second ingredient. Check the Herblore guide for recipes!

Where to Get Herbs: Taverley Dungeon, Chaos Druids or Banshees (requires level 15 Slayer).

Thieving

The way to start off is by pick pocketing the Men from around RuneScape. They will yield a small number of coins. At level 5, steal from either the Tea Stall in northeast Varrock, or from the Cake Stalls in the Ardougne Market.

Agility

Agility is somewhat boring and tedious to level, as you'll find yourself repeating obstacles over and over. I recommend choosing Agility as your experience bonus after completing the Tourist Trap Quest. Otherwise, practice at the Tree Gnome Stronghold until you reach level 35.

Even though it may seem boring and slow to level, it's quite useful as it helps you regain your Energy faster.

Fletching

A useful skill for Rangers, as it allows you to make Bows and Arrows.

For level 1 to 10, only make Shafts.
From level 10, make Longbows.
At level 20, make Oak Shortbows and so on.

It's also much faster if you don't string the bows that you make. You can find some good tree spots in the following locations:

Regular & Oak Trees - behind Catherby.
Willow Trees - south of Rimmington or near the Draynor Bank.
Yew Trees - near the Edgeville Dungeon.

Slayer

Slayer is a great skill to level up, as the slayer monsters have some good drops. A good combat level is recommended, and this skill ties in greatly with Combat.

Slayer works like this: You get an assignment from a Slayer Master. You must kill
The monster he asks you a number of given times, and then you must return.

Note: You only gain Slayer experience from your assignment.

Sometimes he will give a general category of monsters, like Blue Dragons. You don't have to kill the big ones, you can kill the smaller ones if you'd like.

You can check on how many monsters you need by activating the gem that the Slayer Master gives you.

*Don't attack the Slayer monsters without the required equipment, as some of them can kill you quickly!

To start this skill, speak to a Slayer Master in one of the following places:

Burthorpe : Easy
Canifis : Medium
Edgeville : Hard
Zanaris : Harder
Shilo Village : Hardest

Farming

This is another useful skill, allowing you to grow your own plants. You can make new foods, brew your own drinks and even grow your own personal Trees!

Start off by Thieving from the Seed Stalls in Draynor Market, or from Master Farmers. Regular Farmers sometimes have seeds, but it's best to steal from the first 2 options. The Seed Shop also sells some of the basic seeds, and as long as you don't steal from the stalls for a week, she will sell some to you.

Head to the patch near the old farm south of Falador, buy some Farming gear including a Rake, Spade, Seed Dibber, Watering Can and Compost, and clear out the weeds of the Allotment Patch with the rake. Spread some compost and then use the seeds on the patch. Start off with Potato Seeds, and work your way up to better kinds.

Construction

Construction is a cool skill that allows you to build your own house! You can make all sorts of furniture and decorations for you house. You can even make a mechanic cat to follow you around. Once you've built your house, throw a party for all your friends, lure them into your dungeon or just have some fun in the game or combat room.

Why not train other skills at the same time? Well in your house you can train cooking in your kitchen and prayer in your chapel on your shiny alter.

Warning: This is an expensive skill to train!

Hunter

Hunting is new skill which is fun and easy to train. Set up traps to catch birds. Run round with a net catching butterflies. Set up net traps and catch some lizzards! Or why not get something else to do your dirty work? Get an eagle to catch your prey for you.

Once you've caught your prey turn their furs into some cool looking clothes. Get a spotty or spottier cape and reduce your weight or get dark gloves and give yourself a better chance of getting away when theiving!

Treasure Trails

Treasure trails is a treasure hunt across RuneScape. Some monsters drop clues, and they may lead to Black, Adamant, Rune and Rune Trimmed Armors, as well as the God Armors, Prayer Book Pages, Berets, Highwayman Masks, Ranger Boots and Hats. For further details on the rewards you can get, see the Treasure Trail Rewards guide.

Good place to get clues:

- Men in Seers Village Tavern
- Thugs in Edgeville Dungeon
- Guards in Varrock Castle
- Hellhounds in Taverley Dungeon

When you have your first coordinates, go speak with the Observatory Professor and he will teach you to navigate. Then you can get the chart/sextant/watch.

You must have certain equipment when doing Treasure Trails:

- Spade for digging
- Chart (Obtainable in Observatory)
- Sextant (Trawler Captain)
- Watch (Brother Kojo in the Clock Tower south of the Ardougne Zoo)

When digging for coordinates, you must ALWAYS have the chart/sextant/watch on you.

You don't get the reward after your first clue. Clues can lead to other clues, a puzzle, a riddle, a person, and anagram and so on.

FAQ

Here are some common questions about Membership in RuneScape, along with their answers.

Q: How else can I pay for RuneScape if I don't have a credit card?
A: There are all sorts of ways to pay for RuneScape, from credit cards, PayPal, sending checks or money orders and charging RuneScape to your telephone bill. There are other ways too, of course, as Jagex wants to make it available to everyone. Check the "Billing FAQ" under the "Other Features" section of the official RuneScape site for more info.

Q: Is becoming a RuneScape Member secure?
A: Yes, it's completely safe. Whenever you log into the official RuneScape site with your username and password, everything is encrypted using SSL, also known as Secure Sockets Layer. This prevents other from seeing what you are doing, as it scrambles what anyone else sees. RuneScape's payment processors such as Paypal, Worldpay and others also use SSL, making everything secure to use. As long as you keep your computer safe from viruses, spyware and other malware, you're completely fine.

Q: What happens if I decide to become a freeplayer again? What about my items?
A: Should you ever decide to stop your Member service, you just need to unsubscribe on the RuneScape official page. After your credit expires, you'll be a freeplayer again. All of your items, skills and everything else will still be there--nothing changes. Except for your member items, which are still there, but revert to "Members Items." They are unusable until you become a member again.

Q: Is there a limit to how many times I can become a member?
A: No, you can become a member as many times as you wish, and you can unsubscribe as many times as well. There are no bad effects of un-subscribing and re-subscribing.
