Burning Mort'ton Shades

In this guide you will learn how to get some nice cash, plus how to purchase Splitbark Armor after getting Fine Cloth by killing and burning Shades. Splitbark armour is a kind of magic armour which adds defense and attack bonuses, making it not as vulnerable to melee and ranged as magic robes. You must have completed the Shades of Mort'ton Quest to commence with the process of killing and burning shades.

The Mort'ton Temple

Before starting, you must have finished the Priest in Peril Quest and have started Nature Spirit to access the Mort Myre Swamp (finishing it is recommended to protect against Ghasts and swamp decay). Having done the In Search of the Myreque Quest is also helpful.

Getting to the Temple

To begin, you need to go to the temple in Mort'ton by following this map:

Map to Mort'ton

The yellow line is the way through the swamp, but I recommend using the the dungeon behind the Hair of the Dog Tavern in Canifis and taking the boat to Mort'ton from The Hollows if you have completed the In Search of the Myreque Quest. Otherwise, you'll be attacked by Ghasts, which rot your food and harm you once you've run out.

You will need a druid pouch filled with at least 10-15 Nature Harvests and a Blessed Sickle to protect against the Ghasts and decay if crossing through Mort Myre Swamp, both obtained from the Nature Spirit Quest.

You will have to repair the temple, so you will need cash to buy the needed items, about 15,000 to 20,000 coins should be a good amount. A hatchet and tinderbox for burning the shades and some vials of Serum 207 are also needed.

The Shades can get dangerous, so the Protect from Melee Prayer is very useful. To make the effect better wear some Monk Robes with either a Salve Amulet (obtained from the Haunted Mine Quest), Glory Amulet or Holy/Unholy Symbol if you don't have anything better. Salve Amulets increase you attack and defense against
the Shades by 15%.

Starting

For Splitbark Armor, you need Bark and Fine Cloth

Bark can be obtained by cutting a Hollow tree that can be found nearly anywhere in the Haunted Woods east of Canifis (level 45 woodcutting required). Beware of the level 52 Giant Leeches and level 61 Vampires that may suddenly jump out of a tree and attack you. These monsters are very aggressive so watch out.

Hollow Trees can be seen well on the minimap because they are the only trees with the normal tree symbol (all the others are dead trees, some of them are spooked and may hit low damage on you if you run past). Chopping them will get you some Bark.

Serum 207To get Fine Cloth you must go to Mort'ton. Make some Serum 207 by using a Tarromin Herb and some ashes with a vial of water. Use the Serum 207 on Razmire and you will be able to purchase items from his general and building stores.

What you need:

  • Flamtaer Hammer - 10,000gp from the General Store. A regular Hammer works too!
  • Swamp Paste - 31gp each from the Building Store.
  • Limestone Bricks - 21gp each from the Building Store.
  • Planks - Respawns north of the Barbarian Outpost, as well as in the Wilderness. You can also bring some logs (plus 100gp per plank) to the Sawmill Operator northeast of Varrock to have them made, or buy them from him for the same price.

You can make your own Swamp Paste by getting Swamp Tar from Mort Myre, using it with flour and cooking it on a Range. You can mine Limestone from the quarry west of the Priest in Peril church and use it with a chisel to make it into a brick, and planks respawn north of the Barbarian outpost.

Repairing the Temple

You must repair the Mort'ton temple to start working towards the Fine Cloth. To get to the temple, head northeast from Razmire's shop and you will find a bridge. Cross the bridge and you will be on an island. There will be a large gray circle where the temple needs repairing. I suggest switching to world 2 or an other world with lots of players.

The mort'ton temple

You will have some people rebuilding the temple and others fighting the Shades attacking it. You will have to repair it until the Resources indicator in the corner is at 100%. You will also gain about 76 Crafting experience per 1%.

Gaining Sanctity

After reaching 100% Resources, go back to Razmire and buy some Olive Oils. Buy as many as possible and use them on each other to make four dose vials of oil. Once your backpack's full of these vials go back to the temple. Make sure your Resources indicator is at 100% before buying the Oil and never allow it to drop below 5%.

Each time your Resources reach 100%, you can use the Olive Oil on the holy fire mount to make Sacred Oil. Every time you do this you will lose 3.5% Sanctity so keep an eye on the percentage. If your Sanctity drops to 0% you will have to rebuild the temple to raise it. Otherwise you can also kill the attacking Shades to achieve more.

Serum 208You can also cure Razmire and Ulsquire from the Shades of Mort'ton Quest permanently by using a Serum 207 on the holy fire if you have 20% sanctity to make a Serum 208 and using it on them. They will reward you with 400gp for this. Plus, you'll have access to the shops without having to cure them again.

The Shades

Once your backpack's full of Holy Oil, go back to the Canifis bank and use them on the logs you will need for burning the Shades. The type of log you need depends on the kind of Shade you'll want to kill and burn.

Burning Shades

Now that you have finished with the temple, you can deposit your Flamtaer Hammer and withdraw your Pyre Logs in Bank Notes. Also bring some Prayer Potions or good food. Don't forget your Tinderbox and some money.

There are 5 different kinds of Shades you can kill

Shades
Picture Level Shade Pyre Log Prayer Experience
Loar shade 40 Loar Any 33.5
Phrin shade 60 Phrin Any 42
Riyl shade 80 Riyl Willow 62
Asyn shade 100 Asyn Yew 89
Fyre shade 120 Fiyr Magic 100

In Mort'ton, kill a Loar Shade and take it's remains. Next go to the General Store, sell one of your noted logs and buy it again to un-note it!

Pyre Logs

Regular 5 50
Oak 20 70
Willow 35 100
Maple 50 175
Yew 65 225
Magic 80 404.5

Go to any of the Pyring Stations around the village and use the logs with it. Then use the Loar Shade Remains with it and light the logs with your Tinderbox. A pedestal will appear next to you with your reward on it, which will be either coins or a bronze key.

Pyre stations

There are keys with individually colored loops (dark red, light red, light brown, dark brown and purple). The stronger the Shade who's remains you burn, the higher the chance of receiving a rare key. The rarer the key, the higher the chance of receiving Fine Cloth for Splitbark Armor!

The Keys

Burn Loar Shades until you have at least one Bronze Key for going on to the next part. You can't get the keys made out of other metals yet, but if you wish to try you can do so later on in the guide when you will find the other shades.

  • Loar Shades - sometimes drop Bronze Keys when burned.
  • Phrin Shades - sometimes drop Steel Keys when burned.
  • Riyl and Asyn Shades - sometimes drop Black Keys when burned.
  • Asyn and Fiyr Shades - sometimes drop Silver Keys (Only dark red and brown looped ones from Asyn Shades) when burned.

Walk to the northwest of Mort'ton and behind some ruins you will see some wooden doors.

Entrance to the dungeon

If you have the Bronze Key in your backpack, you can open them and enter the Shade's crypt. In the first room you can open the chests with your Bronze Keys to collect your reward or kill the Phrin Shades.

To the North there is a steel door leading to a room full of Riyl Shades, chests and even more steel doors. If you have a steel key you can unlock them and proceed north where the path splits. To the west are the rooms of the Asyn Shades where you can use the Black Keys. To the east are the Fiyr Shade rooms where you can use your Silver Keys.

In this place you can kill the higher leveled Shades and collect your rewards (Coins, items or Fine Cloth). If you collect enough Fine Cloth for the parts of the Splitbark armour (see below), you can buy it for a certain amount of money. You need a piece of bark for each Fine Cloth.

After you have everything you need go to the Wizard's Tower south of Draynor Village. Talk to the wizard upstairs with the armour on and give him the money, cloth and bark required for the bits you want to buy. Congratulations, you have your Splitbark armour!
