Temple Trekking is a mini-game in which you play the part of a "bodyguard" and attempt to protect someone from monsters, while guiding them to the Paterdomus Temple. There are a number of cool rewards you can get, along with some decent experience, so this game is well worth a try!

The Basics

Temple Trekking is a special minigame you can play after the completion of the required quests (see below).

Your goal is to successfully escort your companion to the Paterdomus temple. Note that you do not have to walk all the way there... Further explanation will be given further in the guide.

Temple Trekking can be a decent alternative to get some Experience books, herbs, snake hides, shade bodies and materials. You can also get some good combat experience.

This game will mostly test your ability to defend someone you protect.

This minigame is Dangerous. You WILL lose your stuff if you die! You will also have to use some of your own resources.

There are, however, different stages of difficulties and routes.

This is your chance so play "Bodyguard" and have the opportunity to get interesting rewards in the end!

Requirements

In order to try and play this minigame, you must have completed the following quests:

It is also recommended to have done the Haunted Mines Quest and have at least 43 Prayer plus a decent combat level (70+).

Getting There

Getting to the Temple Trekking MiniGame

There are multiple ways to get to the minigame, all shown on this map.

  • Paterdomus Path : Take this path if you are coming from varrock. You also end up there after the completion of a successful trek. You are most likely going to encounter a lot of Ghasts, however.
  • Haunted Mines Shortcut : Take the regular Paterdomus path, and when you are at the haunted mines, head south east. You should find a fence to jump over to get into Burgh De Rott.
  • Fairy Rings : If you have completed the Fairy Tale Part 2 Quest, you can use the fairy ring to get into Morytania by dialing the letters B-K-R.
  • The Swamp Boat Pass : The fastest way from canifis, and you are less likely to encounter ghasts.
  • Tentacle fail point : If you take the Hardest route and you fail or escape from the Tentacle monster, that is where you will end up. It is also a good way to try again.

Equipment

Before starting, it is highly recommended you have the following items:

  • A Rod Of Ivandis (For Vampyres)
  • Guthix Balance Potions (For Vampyres)
  • A Blessed Silver Sickle (Ghasts & Vampyres, Protects from Swamp Decay & Bloom)
  • A Hatchet (For bridge repair events)
  • A Knife for Snakes (Skin them) or Bog event (Spiny Bush)
  • Wolfbane Dagger (Can be used to damage Vampyres, Alternative to Sickle)
  • Gadderhammer (For shades, if you want, only when you pass through Mort'ton)
  • Druid Pouches (For Ghasts, Absolutely necessary to prevent food from rotting)
  • Salve Amulet (Can help a lot against undead monsters, From Haunted Mines Quest)
  • Good Food (Lobsters, Sharks, Monkfish, Swordfish) [You can heal your companion by using food on them to!]
  • Good Armor (That you are not afraid to lose):
    • Rune
    • Dragon
    • Barrows
  • Good Weapons or Above:
    • Dragon Scimitar Or Longsword
    • Abyssal Whip
  • 1-4 Prayer Potions (If you want to do the hard routes)
  • A Ring Of Life (In case you almost die)
  • A Quick teleport (That doesn't take up too much space, such as a glory or ectophial, teleport slab)

When you are fully equipped, your inventory should look like this:

Temple Trekking Equipment

The way you set your combat equipment is up to you. This is only a recommended Set-up. You might want to take more prayer potions for the hard tasks. However, don't strip out too much food, because you can heal your companion with it, and yourself, of course. You can also bring stat raising items, as some fights can be difficult.

All these recommendations are for you to be prepared for any eventual events.

The Villagers

When you feel you are ready and prepared, speak with one of the six villagers. You can ask them questions if you want. When you are ready, tell them you can bring them to Paterdomus.

Villagers

If your companion dies during your trek, you will have to escape your event and return to Burgh De Rott and start over. Even if they die, they will be at Burgh De Rott again, therefore you can try as many times as you like.

Easy

Easy villagers are able to defend themselves and have the most hitpoints. However, this does not mean they can't die.

Dalcian Fang:

Dalcian Fang

HitpointsHitpoints : Highest
Combat AbilityCombat Ability : Good, but less than Fyiona.
Reward LevelReward Level : Low
NotesNotes: Dalcian has more endurance than any other. He will try helping you in combat events, and is well capable to defend himself. The only drawback he offers are his low rewards as he is easier to escort. On harder routes he might be helpless, however.

Fyiona Fray:

Fyiona Fray

HitpointsHitpoints : High
Combat AbilityCombat Ability : Best of all villagers.
Reward LevelReward Level : Low
NotesNotes: She will sometimes attack an enemy by herself.
Fyiona is the strongest of villagers. She has less life than Dalcian, but she can deal more damage. She can help you whenever needed, but this doesn't mean you must not watch her. She can perish quite easily on the harder routes. She will give lower rewards.

Medium

These villagers cannot fight back and have less hitpoints than the easy ones.

Jayene Kliyn:

Jayene Kliyn

HitpointsHitpoints : Medium-low
Combat AbilityCombat Ability : Poor, worse than Valantay.
Reward LevelReward Level : Medium
NotesNotes: Jayene is a medium leveled villager, but she is quite fragile compared to her partner Valantay. She can fight back, but it is not really a good idea to have her fight. She can handle things well enough on the easy route, but you might consider bringing food supplies for her on the harder routes. She offers decent rewards.

Valantay Eppel:

Valantay Eppel

HitpointsHitpoints : Medium
Combat AbilityCombat Ability : Poor
Reward LevelReward Level : Medium
NotesNotes: Valantay is tougher than Jayene. He doesn't do much damage either. He can be quite resilient on the easy route, but you should watch him carefully on the harder routes, and bring food for him. He will offer medium rewards.

Hard

These villagers are extremely fragile, as they have low hit points, and have no combat abilities whatsoever. They fight back, but they never even manage to damage a foe. They keep engaged in combat until that creature is dead, therefore they will die easily. They will give the greatest rewards. If you are up for a challenge, take them throughout the hard route!

Rolayne Twickit:

Rolayne Twickit

HitpointsHitpoints : Low
Combat AbilityCombat Ability : Poor, Often stays engaged, causing death.
Reward LevelReward Level : High
NotesNotes: Rolayne Twickit is more resistant than Smiddi, and he is better in combat too... Even if he is stronger, he will easily die on easy routes... And very fast on the harder ones. Food is an absolute necessity here, and try to avoid engaging him in combat as much as possible. In the end, you might get some interesting rewards from him!

Smiddi Ryak:

Smiddi Ryak

HitpointsHitpoints : Lowest
Combat AbilityCombat Ability : Extremely Poor, Often stays engaged with monster, causing death.
Reward LevelReward Level : Highest
NotesNotes: She is the weakest of them all. She will die extremely fast if engaged in combat. She will give the best rewards as she is the weakest and hardest to escort. It is wise to plan your actions if you trek with her and bring plenty of food. If you're up for a challenge, Smiddi is the one to go with.

Map Routes

When you have spoken with the desired villager and difficulty, you will be taken at the beginning of your trek:

The start of your trekking task!

If you want to turn back at this point, close the route map and right click on the end of the path. You can also give them food to use later. You can also give food to your companion here so he/she can use it later.

From this point, your protegé will tell you to select your route:

Select your route

You and your companion are represented by the small white and red pawns. You do not have to walk all the way to the temple!

The route you select will determine the difficulty of the monsters, the chance of an encounter (Event) as well as your reward (If you make it out, that is).

For example : If you take route two with Smiddi Ryak, you will have a Hard-Medium Trek. The difficulty of the Villager is how hard it is to defend your protegé, and the path is the difficulty of the event and level of reward.

Events

Events randomly occur after you select your path. When a event occurs, you will see a Exclamation point like this on your map:

An event

There are 3 Different types of events:

  1. Monster Event : You will be in a Multi-combat zone, and several monsters will appear to attack you or your escort. This is the most common and most likely event.
  2. Samaritan : A friendly figure might give you a special bonus!
  3. Obstacles : A challenging obstacle will have to be crossed...
  4. Not really an event, but, sometimes, nothing may happen and you will arrive safely at the Paterdomus Temple!

When an event happens, you will be in a Multi-combat Zone. Also, you will not be in the normal world, you will be in a small enclosed area where you must either fight/solve to continue, or escape.Your companion will be vulnerable, here. You will have to protect him/her. Not all of them can fight back. They can/will get attacked, so pay attention to their life. You can heal them with food, but only when they are not engaged in combat!

Here is a Map Chart of all different possible Combat Zone Areas. This will also show you the Exit, Evade and Escape points. Use this to plan your tactics:

Click for a full-sized map

At the edges of the event area, there will be small blue rocks that you can right click. This marks your Escape/Continue points. There are several different kinds and options you may find:

Edge of an event area
Continue-trek Path
  1. Continue Trek : This is where you must exit after the completion of an event. There is no negative outcome to this, because it usually means you completed the event.
  2. Escape : The escape point is located near your spawn point. If you do this, you will fail your trek and you will have to start over at Burgh De Rott.
  3. Evade event : Evading an event will allow you to progress in your trek, not causing you to fail. However, there are some restrictions :
    • You can always evade the events on path 1.
    • You must complete 50% (IE : Kill half of the monsters) of the event on path 2 in order to do this.
    • You CANNOT evade events on path 3 until you have killed all monsters. Afterwards, you can evade, but it would be pointless, as you can just keep going on the trek.
    • Obstacle Events cannot be evaded.
After exiting the combat/event area, you will see your progress map again.

When you arrive at the temple, you will be given a Reward Scroll that you must cash-in in the Burgh De Rott Bank. Further will be explained in the Rewards Section.

Monster Events

Some monsters appear only on certain routes, and the monster level depends on the route difficulty. You can get up to 6 monsters.

Vampyre Juvinates:

Vampyre Juvinates

LevelLevels : 59 - 90 - 119
RoutesRoutes : 1 - 2 - 3 (All)
Danger LevelDanger level : Medium-Low
NotesNotes : Juvinates will most likely attack you. They are immune to all weapons except Blessed Silver Sickles, Ivandis Rods and Wolfbane Daggers. The best Weapon against them is the Rod. If you have Guthix Balance potions and have used your ivandis rod special on them after they are half-dead, you can either :

  • Return them to Human Form and get a reward
    Liam
  • Make them angry! This will make them stronger, and you will have to kill it!
  • Instantly kill it.
If not, you may just keep damaging them until they disappear.

Ghasts:

Ghast

LevelLevels : 79 - 109 - 139
RoutesRoutes : 1 - 2 - 3 (All)
Danger LevelDanger level : Medium-Low
NotesNotes : You will need your Druid Pouches to defend against ghasts. Doing so will reveal them as well as prevent them from rotting your food. If you do not have druid pouches, you will have no other choice to escape, or, recharge your pouch with the Rotten Logs, bushes and stems on the ground by casting bloom with your blessed silver sickle. They will most likely attack you first. Ghasts can be tackled with regular weapons. They also give 80 prayer experience when killed.

Giant Snails:

Giant Snail

LevelLevels : 80 - 109 - 139
RoutesRoutes : 1 - 2 - 3 (All)
Danger LevelDanger level : High
NotesNotes : Giant Snails have a lot of hitpoints will likely attack your companion. They also hit constantly and they have ranged based attacks... Protection from Range is recommended. Once dead, they will drop Giant Snail Shells (No current use?).

Giant Snakes:

Giant Snake

LevelLevels : 80 - 109 - 139
RoutesRoutes : 1 - 2 - 3 (All)
Danger LevelDanger level : High
NotesNotes : Snakes have a tendency to be aggressive and hit often and hard. They will also attack your companion. Protection from melee is recommended on harder Treks. If you have a knife after you have killed it, you can skin it for a few Snake Hides. These Snake hides cost 20 GP Each to be tanned and can be used to craft snakeskin armor. They do not poison.

Shades:

Shade

LevelLevels : Riyl : 80 - Asyn : 110 - Fiyr : 140
RoutesRoutes : 1 (Rare) - 2 - 3 (All)
Danger LevelDanger level : Medium-High
NotesNotes : Shades are only encountered while you walk in mort'ton They can be beaten with better ease if you have a Salve amulet and/or a Gadderhammer (Regular Weapons can do). When killed, the shades will drop the according Remains, used in the Shades of Mort'ton minigame. Shades will most likely attack you, but sometimes they attack your companion! Also, be careful, as they hit hard and often, Protect from melee is highly recommended on harder routes!. They have low defense, though.

Shades

Shades can also be slain with the halberd easily. It is quite risky, however. Simply place your companion between them and you.

The Tentacle Monster:

Tentacle Monster

LevelLevels : Head : 140 - Tentacles - 99
RoutesRoutes : 3 Only
Danger LevelDanger level : Very High
NotesNotes : The tentacle monster is extremely dangerous. It is highly recommended to bring prayer potions and use Protect from Melee if you are going to take the hardest route and that you expect encountering this one. The monster has 4 tentacles and one head. You must kill ALL tentacles first and the head after in order to move on. If you poison one part of the monster, all of them will be poisoned as well. If you try killing the head first, it will regenerate. Kill the tentacles first.

Good Events

There is only one good event... However, it is very rare.

Abidor Crank:

Abidor Crank

RoutesRoutes : 1 - 2 - 3 (All)
NotesNotes : Abidor is probably the best event you could get. If you find him, he will heal you and raise your defense and hitpoints by 20% over your maximum limit! He will also turn Rotten Food into Stews!

Obstacle Events

Obstacle events are situations where you must find a way to get across the terrain. Often, there are things you can use in your environment. In these events, it's quite useful to have your hatchet and knife with you. These Events can happen on any path.

The Bog:Stick

The bog is quite simple to cross. You will need a bladed weapon or a knife, and 3 empty inventory slots for this part.

Spiny Bush

Begin by using your sharp weapon or knife on the Spiny Bush. You will get 3 sticks.

This ground seems firm

You must now use the sticks on the bog to see if it is walkable or not. Each time you check it, you will be able to move one square forward. Sometimes, you may randomly lose the stick. When it says "This ground seems quite firm." you will be able to step to that spot. Progress Square by Square. Don't just walk anywhere, be careful! Once you have made it to the other end, you will be able to keep going on your trek.

The River: Short vine

The river

The river is quite easy to cross, but will need a knife and 3 free inventory slots. If you don't have a knife, simply search the backpack near the viny tree. Use the knife on the Viny tree 3 times, and you should obtain 3 Short Vines. Use them together, and you should have a Long Vine. Use it on the other tree, and swing across. Resume the Voyage to the temple afterwards.

Swinging across the river

The Broken Bridge: Section of a Bridge

Fixing the bridge

Quite simple as well, since all you have to do is repair the bridge. You will need your hatchet and 3 inventory spots on this part. If you don't have one, kill the level 23 Zombie to obtain a Bronze one. Cut the 3 Dead Trees to obtain logs.

Equip your hatchet, and use all three logs on the bridge. If it is not equipped and you use the logs on the bridge, you will be told that you need a hammer in order to repair it, however, You won't need it if you Equip your axe. Move on to your trip to the temple.

The Rewards

Burgh de Rott

Reward ScrollsWhen you have completed your trek, you will be at the base of the Paterdomus Temple. Your protegé will give a Reward Scroll, Depending on what difficulty the route was and how well you did protecting them. You can only have one Scroll at the time.

The easy route will give you a Blue Scroll, the medium route a Yellow Scroll and finally, the hard route will give you a Red Scroll. These scrolls will have to be swapped-in at the Burgh De Rott bank.

There are many possible rewards, aside from the combat experience you get during events. You will receive some items when you cash-in your certificate. Sometimes, you may get an additional tome of experience.

Here is a chart of the different possible rewards:

F.A.Q.

Q : Will I lose my stuff if i die during this minigame?
A : Yes, you will if you happen to die. This is why it is a good to bring a ring of life.

Q : Do I really have to walk all the way to the temple?
A : No, you will move quickly on the "Progress map" until you encounter some events. When you complete an event you will resume the "Progress map" movement... However, when you have completed your trek, you will have to walk back to Burgh De Rott.

Q : If my companion dies, will I be able to escort him again?
A : Yes. You will find your companion in Burgh De Rott if you fail or he/she dies. There is no limit on the number of times you can do this.

Q : I can't kill the vampyres! What should I do?
A : That's because you are not attacking it with silver weapons. Try attacking it with a Rod of Ivandis, for example.

Q : I'm in a monster event, but I see no monsters!
A : That's probably because it is a Ghast event. Wait for them to come to you or search for them and use your druid pouches on them.

Q : I have no pouch charges left and I'm at a ghast event! What should I do?
A : There are things you can bloom on the Combat Zone. Bloom them with your silver sickle and add them to your pouch.

Q : I'm at the tentacle monster event, I've beat him or want to flee... but I can't go anywhere! What should I do?
A : Right-click the boat and select either Continue-Trek or Escape event.

Q : Can I choose what Tome of learning I obtain as a reward?
A : No, all rewards are random. If you receive a tome, it will be one of the following skills :
Agility, Firemaking, Fishing, Mining, Slayer, Thieving or Woodcutting.

Conclusion

Temple Trekking is a quite risky minigame, although it may be challenging and somewhat fun. In the end you can get interesting rewards. It is also great to get snakehides (Giant Snakes), Shade bodies, fight difficult monsters, and test your combat strategies!

After reading this extensive guide, you should be aptly prepared for any situation...

Happy Trekking!
