Treasure Trails are one of the various Distractions & Diversions in RuneScape, and are started by obtaining a Clue Scroll. Reading the Clue Scroll and following the given instructions can lead you on a trail to all corners of the map to earn great Rewards!

There are quite a few different types of Treasure Trails in RuneScape. Sometimes you will need to solve a jumbled-up Anagram clue and find an NPC, while other times you need to rearrange a puzzle box to form a picture. Other times you'll have a riddle to solve, and still other times you'll need to use your skills at navigating the land to locate a buried scroll.

Each Treasure Trail is an adventure to embark on, and you'll never know what's coming next!


Obtaining a Clue Scroll

Before you start on a Treasure Trail, you will need to obtain a Clue Scroll. The table below shows a range of monsters that drop Clue Scrolls of each level. The list is not inclusive and there are other monsters which will also drop Clue Scrolls.

Required Items

When completing Treasure Trails, there are a number of items that you will need to bring with you. The required items vary depending on the type of clue you have been given, however they all fit into one of the following categories:

  • Clue Scroll - You need a Clue Scroll to know what the clue is!
  • Coordinate Items - A Watch, Sextant and Chart need to be in your inventory when completing Coordinate Clues.
  • Food - You will sometimes have to venture into dangerous areas or will be attacked by mysterious Wizards, so will want to be able to heal.
  • Spade - Some clues require you to dig to find the next clue or the treasure at the end of the trail.
  • Teleportation Items - When completing a Treasure Trail, you will find yourself heading all over the map to find the next location, so anything to help speed up travel will be useful.
  • Weapon and Armor - Some clues will require you to defeat an enemy, so you will want to be able to come out ontop.
  • Random Outfits - Emote clues will require you to be wearing some rather bizarre outfits which can be obtained as the clue requires.

Types of Clue

There are a number of different types of clue that you may find yourself having to solve. Not all types of clue can be found on all trails, so the list below summarises this:

  • Level 2 - Anagrams, Challenge, Coordinates, Emotes, Maps, Riddles
  • Level 3 - Anagrams, Challenge, Coordinates, Emotes, Fight, Maps, Puzzle Box, Riddles
  • Level 4 - Celtic Knot, Compass, Fight, Puzzle Box, Scans


Anagrams can be obtained on level 2 and 3 Treasure Trails. You are given a series of letters which need to be rearranged to make the name of the NPC who you need to talk to. Upon talking to the NPC, you may be asked to solve a Challenge.

Coordinate clues tell you the location that you will need to dig. To complete these clues you will need a Watch, Sextant and Chart in your inventory as well as the spade to dig.

Upon digging, a Wizard will appear and attack you. They can use both Melee and a poisonous Melee attack and by activating a protection prayer against one of the attacks, they will switch to using the other. Once the Wizard is dead, you can dig again to find the next part of the trail. An alternative is to bring a Meerkat familiar and use their Fetch Casket scroll to obtain the Casket or Scrollbox without disturbing the Wizard.  Meerkats also act as both a Sextant and Spade.

The Coordinate Locator will show you the location on the World Map when a coordinate is entered. Instructions explaining how to obtain and use the Sextant, Watch and Chart can be found below the table.

Obtaining the Coordinate Items

Sextant, Watch and Chart To complete Coordinate Clues, you will need a number of items, which can be obtained by talking to several NPCs when you have a Coordinate Clue in your inventory.

  1. Talk to the Professor at the Observatory, just north of Castle Wars, and ask him about Treasure Trails.
  2. Head to Port Khazard and talk to one of the sailors to get a Sextant.
  3. Head to the Clocktower, south of Ardougne Zoo, and speak to a monk there to obtain a Watch.
  4. Head back to the Professor at the Observatory to obtain a Chart and be given an explanation about how to use the equipment.
  5. You will also need a Spade, which can be bought from Farming shops, or found at a spawn point at the Estate Agent's building in Falador.

Using the Sextant

How to align the sextant To use the Sextant, choose to 'Look through Sextant', which is the left-click option. You will then need to align the horizon and sun so that they are central by pressing the arrows. The vertical arrows change the position of the horizon and the curved horizontal arrows change the position of the sun. Once they are both in the middle of the eyehole, as shown in the image to the left, choose to 'Get Location' to be told the coordinates of where you are standing.



Emote clues require you to head to a certain area, wearing some bizarre items, and perform a certain emote to make Uri appear and give you the next stage of the trail. Upon performing the emote, a double agent may appear, who you will need to kill. Once the agent is dead, performing the emote again, with the required items equipped, will cause Uri to appear. If a double agent will appear, the clue will say 'Beware of double agents!' in it.
