A BitTorrent tracker is a server that assists in the communication between peers using the BitTorrent protocol. It is also, in the absence of extensions to the original protocol, the only major critical point, as clients are required to communicate with the tracker to initiate downloads. Actually thepiratebay never works when I put it in my tracker list...openbittorrent.com (if I remember right) seems to be the new popular one. The Pirate Bay is just good for finding the torrent files now.

 

Also, what's wrong with trackers? Other than finding a good list of them, to add to torrents uploaded by idiots who only put 2 or 4 of them in the .torrent file, I've never found them to be annoying.

Icy Defiance, that's because a large majority of ISP's actually BLOCK tpb's tracker.
