Dear pirates (some of you anyway)

I think that piracy isn't terrible, but I'm not trying to start that debate here. I read this on PC Gamer in an article about how Metro: Last Light would have some day 1 DLC etc etc shizzlestorm etc etc (I love PC Gamer except for the large amount of trolls in the comments section):

How people can eat up this shizzle is beyond me. As time goes on you get less & less of a game and pay more for it and publishers wonder why so many people pirate games?

It's ridiculous to suggest that removal of content in any way justifies piracy. Very few things ever justify piracy, because you're taking somebody else's content for free. Piracy isn't stealing, but pirating something because you feel entitled is dumb. It's really, really dumb. I dislike people who are too quick to dismiss pirates as thieves, but I think that people that suggest that piracy is okay when X happens are very, very wrong. Pirate if you want, but don't pretend what you're doing is okay.

In unrelated news, I'm going to do my confirmation (or whatever the actual word is) in less than a month. I feel like I'm ready to make the choice and I actually believe in what I'll be saying 'yes' to. I've had my reservations about my church because it's a bit too conservative, but I've decided that I'd be better off staying here so I can try to make a difference. I guess I'm kind of excited but besides the special church service the only thing different will be that I'll be allowed to participate in communion. Our pastor had the group of people doing their confirmation suggest songs and he'll be giving us the definitive list on Sunday, and I'm hoping desperately that there'll be a lot of more modern (ie. not at least a century old) songs. I'll be playing guitar along with some others for those, should be fun.

One of my mates went to what I think was a confirmation when he was 12 with the.. Catholic church? Church of Ireland? Don't know. Is it normal to "affirm" at a young age or is it different in the Netherlands?

Doing it at younger than 17/18 is generally discouraged, though not disallowed; the point is that you actually want to know what you're saying, because it is a commitment. Also it does depend on the denomination. My church is a subset of the reformed church, and it gets complicated fast :P I know the Catholic church does do it at a younger age, and the baptists seem to find the baptism more important, though that is again at a later age.

Piracy, while wrong, does have its clear upsides though because of the shortcomics of the owners of the source material. I am sure most people will pirate because the content is free, but quite frankly, the limitations of publication rights (especially when it comes to TV shows) or factors like DRM in gaming end up forcing people to dabble in piracy, simply because they are put in a situation they do not deem feasible.

All of my music folder is pirated.

And all of my sheet music cabinet.

Ironically one of those sheet music sheets is for Pirates of the Caribbean that I "stole" from school one time to get around the "You must destroy this when you finish with it" rule.

Really though, piracy's fine if what's being stolen makes no sense to buy.

I think it was the Bioshock devs/publishers who said that they didn't mind the piracy of Bioshock: Infinite as it helped attract attention and more customers through word of mouth. I pirate (a lot) however I don't justify it because it is wrong, however publishers need to realise exactly why people are pirating and work on fixing that (and no, always-on DRM is definitely not the answer).

You have a point there, but it is still not something you own.

So you're saying all of the music you have makes no sense to buy? Why not? Musicians need to get money too.

I agree with what you say here, generally :P

Makes sense.

Well, I'm just saving the sheet music from a horrible destruction.

And also I can't afford hundreds of dollars of music files. The people who made the music are all dead now anyways.

What do you mean by horrible destruction?

And very few people can afford hundreds of dollars of music files; you buy a few albums every month and build up your collection that way - then you don't need a lot of money at one time. I'm not going to pretend I haven't pirated music, but I've also quit doing it and I've started to buy the albums that I didn't pay for a few at a time.

Came here expecting a blog entry about actual pirates.

So disappointed right now.

For you I will make a blog about pirates tomorrow.

There's something with the copyright that says you've got to destroy photocopied sheet music once it's done after educational purposes or something else crazy to that effect.

And also what Guitar said. Except real.
