Exams and tonsillitis

Sofee

Had my first exam out of 6 today - English. It wasn't too bad I guess, surprisingly finished it within the time limit (3 hours). Could've been worse.

This morning, I woke up with that scratchy feeling at the back of my throat. It was fairly common for me to have this in winter mornings so I went about my day, studying and arriving at my school's library to study more. The scratchy feeling wasn't going away, and it was becoming worse. I drank 3 bottles of water to attempt to get rid of it, like I would do for a sore throat, but it did nothing. By then it was as if someone had torn off a layer of skin at the back of my throat and there was a searing pain every time I inhaled/exhaled. And I couldn't drink a lot of water in the exam because I was very tight on time and I didn't want to have any bathroom breaks. I survived the exam and inspected my throat when I got home. I found some yellow circular protruding things on my left tonsil and the back of my throat was an angry red. I googled the symptoms of tonsilitis and it looked pretty similar. Apparently the tonsils are the things that filter out the bacteria from entering the throat. Last week, 80% of my friends at school had gotten colds and flus and I was popping Vitamin C pills pretty frequently, along with eating oranges and kiwis. Looks like my poor tonsils couldn't handle the viruses floating around.

I asked Maya who had gotten tonsilitis before and she described the first day as having the scratchy feeling, then within 24-48 hours she got a temperature and was bedridden for a few days after that. Fantastic. I was so desperate and made sure I WOULDN'T get a cold during exams and this happens. On the first day of exams. Luckily I don't have an exam tomorrow but if it is indeed tonsillitis and I get worse I might have to skip my Thursday and Friday exam, which I will need a doctor's note for. If it were a cold, I'd be sniffling and blowing my nose right now but there has ONLY been the scratchy feeling, which is a lot different from just a sore throat. No phlegm.

So, anybody got tonsillitis before? What was it like? What should I/shouldn't I eat? Any miracle remedies to get rid of it in a day?

Go see a doctor simply because of this. If your tonsils become changed on top of all the other symptoms, it is a rather good indicator that you need to consult a professional. :P

Edit: Curse you, Lilshu! Stop thinking what I am thinking. :o

They're only like one or two spots though, and tiny.

I feel a lot better today, throat doesn't feel as bad but it kinda feels like there's a bit of phlegm there.

That's how a few severe (like life threatening) infections start out. Definitely keep an eye on it. If it doesn't get better/if you break a fever, definitely see a doctor ASAP.

Would a picture of the yellow spot thing help?

Shizzle, just go to the doctor already. Infections, especially inside the body, are nothing to mess around with.

Sounds like it, I get tonsillitis quite regularly (3ish times a year) and thats exactly how it starts out for me. See a doctor, you want to stop it early or it can get quite painful.

That's a sign that you might need to have a tonsilectomy, friend.

Well, I mean, your not fair off, its my immune system not working, but I only lost immunity to this one infection and I didn't get it through sexual transmission.

Yes I do need my tonsils out, but I can't find a time to do it that wont interfere with things.

But anyway, go see the doctor.

Hate to be pedantic, but every time someone refers to kiwifruit as 'kiwis' I think of them eating the bird.

I always just assumed everyone else in the world just called it Chinese gooseberry and we just called it kiwifruit so we could pretend we had our own fruit.

I had tonsilitis and missed a ton of school for it. This resulted in having my tonsils removed (they also removed my adnoids, but thats besides the point).

I'd reccomend seeing a doctor.

Rinse your mouth with betadine (use approximately 12 parts water per 1 part betadine) twice a day and it should help a bit.

Anyway, you should definitely see a doctor.
