Today I learned

Sobend

Hey guys, remember that time a few months ago (November?) when we got demoted? Basically we were platinum and now we are gold. The two people who did this were new Jagex staff members who evaluated us and then decided to demote us. Today I learned that those new Jagex staff members... are moderators at Runezone.

Now, I don't want to say that we didn't deserve that demotion. To be terribly honest, the content added and updated on the site since I started being active on here again has overall been pretty crappy, although it's getting better. But what I am bewildered about 1) Why did Jagex hire people from fansites to review, as that would lead to major conflicts of interests and 2) If you were going to hire two people, why hire them both from the same site?

We actually interviewed one of the moderators, Mod Balance, for one of our newsletters. It was only three questions, but still an interview. Seemed like a nice enough guy. We actually asked why Runezone is getting so talked about by Jagex. He didn't give us a clear answer, now it looks like we don't need much of one. What I don't like is how they are basically putting in plugs for Runezone in everything and even now I am getting a message I can't turn off in-game about how I should check out something on Runezone.

This makes me sad. I'm not so much mad at these Runezone mods, more Jagex for being idiots and hiring them. At least hire from different fansites, particularly because Runezone is young and one old fansite should get a mod. Find someone from Tip.it, RuneHQ, or hell even Sals Realm (Yuanrang for [email protected]@).

By the way, this is just a general rant which is me randomly going off. It in no way reflects the feelings of the site as a whole.

I totally agree with you - while I do see the benefits of hiring community members to help with community relations, it feels like here Jagex is trying to control which fansites become favorable and attract more members, with the in-game messages and such.

Not sure if this is really related to the demotion thing but it sounds kind of dumb. I'm not sure why they'd be intentionally doing this. The older fansites are generally hostile to Jagex though (particularly Zybez, they have a long history of that), but I'm not really suggesting a conspiracy.

The demotion thing was more of a tie-in to us. I still don't like the fact that people at Runezone can demote us, and I don't think anyone else does either.

Mod Balance

Mod Infinity. :P

This would be a cool RS Discussion topic

Woops, oh well same difference they're both the Runezone people.

This definitely sounds more like an under-the-table issue than anything else.

The fact that Sal's gets demoted is because of the actual site traffic we receive, not the fact that RuneZone moderators are now JaGex employees. I think you are overreacting to such news. I would like to think that the evaluations have certain criteria for promotions and demotions.

I would think the demotion is due to forum traffic. I would highly note this because A google search for guides and such would have Sals in the Top 5 searches, with RuneZone nowhere in sight.

No one is arguing that Sal's didn't deserve the demotion - it is just simply odd that the people hired to make such decisions may have conflicting interests and the fact they both were drawn from the same community.

Forum traffic is not really related to this - when I checked a few months ago RuneHQ's forums were not even 1/2 as active as ours.

The reason we were demoted was because we don't user twitter enough and because we aren't active enough with events in game. Yes, those are qualifications for platinum now apparently. It doesn't even make sense; we hold weekly events. I know many fansites do less, and if they do more some are liable to be pretty empty.

But looks at RuneHQ's front page, its filled with events. Other than the Skill Competitions here on the forums, what other weekly events are we providing and advertising?

Also, the use of Social Networking is very key into getting your site noticed and promoting the game. The "Sals" Twitter last posted in February whereas RuneHQ is still posting to this day, including events.

I'm not trying to be a stickler, just trying to help out by pointing out obvious things compared to other sites. Maybe this rant should go on the website/forum suggestion subforum and gather ideas on how to improve our site back to Platinum.

Again, not trying to compare us or say we didn't deserve a demotion. Main point of this blog post is to say that people at Runezone shouldn't have the power to moderate fansites. You (Jagex) are putting Runezone at a higher level than everybody else; even if we were rated equally (for whatever that means) they would still be ahead of us.

I guess I could put community events on site, but I have no control over twitter and there's not much the community can do about it. Perhaps we could brain storm having more activities (a weekly mass).

pretty sure we never did any of those things and we were platinum dood

I wouldn't be surprised if it was really just like you said. Jagex has shown time and time again they're just not a very well put together company.
