Men and women of Sal's (preferably women) I need your help

My best friend's birthday isn't too far and we'll be spending vacations together to celebrate. She's sweetheart of a person who has had a lot of awful luck in her life, always being unlucky with all kinds of problems and rarely ever has any any luck with her relationships. She became a bit of a loner because of this. For once I'd like her to get pampered and receive some of the attention and care I know she deserves, and as her best friend I decided it should be me doing something special for her.

Basically I'm creating some sort of birthday package, which I'm almost done with. The last thing I'd like to add to it is something else neat and shiny, something more feminine to put it that way, to counterbalance the other nerdy things. And I thought about getting her a good and pretty watch.

Honestly I'm awful with gifts for females, I never know what to buy. I think a watch is actually pretty cool though, and something she'd enjoy. I have awful taste though lol. I checked a couple on Ebay to have an idea of what I could buy, and I have my favourites, but I'd like to ask for the opinion of the females of Sal's (do we even have any left??) and the males who are in relationships and know their girlfriend's/wife's tastes and can give me a valuable insight on what females like in a watch.

I've been checking this store - http://www.ebay.com/usr/watchstore2

So if you want to help give it a good look and pick your favourites, any advice is considered immensely valuable. You'll notice most if not all are in promotion, and something below 100€ (promotion, because the "real" prices of most amount to 200/300/400+) amount to would be the ideal. And no I'm not being cheap, the other parts of her present already amount to a considerable value. It doesn't even have to be the actual watch you pick, just pointing out one with a style you think a woman would like is already valuable help to me.

Thanks in advance.

And no she's not my girlfriend and I don't like her that way. She's like a sister and I consider her family, and she feels the same way about me. So please nothing with a shizzleload of hearts and stuff like that. :P

I'm out of ideas where to ask for help because I can't use Facebook, or she'll find out about what I'm planning for her present in a heartbeat lol. She's far from stupid.

Well, the obvious question to begin with is... does she need or want a watch? :P

I don't even know. :P

I can't ask, if I do it she'll know immediately why I'm asking. :P

I guess she probably does, she's not very wealthy so if she owns one it's definitely not that good and inferior in quality to what I'm hoping to buy.

I've never seen her with one at least, but then again admittedly it isn't something I pay attention to. :x

I know for sure she likes girly/feminine things.

If I were you, I would check if she actually is wearing a watch before you go to the step of buying one. She might not like wearing watches out of habit, and what not. I have not used one for about 10 years, for instance. :P

PERFECT. I'm a pretty big watch enthusiast, and I actually bought a long-term watch for myself when I went to America last year.

There's some variety in ladies watches, but from my findings, the vast majority of girls usually like small, delicate metal watches (most of them imo, including me) or watches with a leather strap and has a larger face than the metal ones. The leather ones are more designer-y looking and you could say flashy, and the metal ones are more...normal. Btw, we're talking analog watches here, not digital. Some examples of what I'm imagining: leather, metal. My personal preference is metal, nothing flashy (no gemstones), and not one plain colour. At the moment I have a steel Seiko watch that has some nice gold-looking trimmings. I love Seiko, also recommend it to you.

So basically for you, step 1: leather or metal? Step 2: flashy or no flashy? Step 3: all one colour or some variety? Once you've narrowed down your options, it'll be a lot easier to find one in your price range.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions, or my opinion on some watches you've picked out :)

watch protip

if you want to gift an, affordable watch gift a swatch

those are very good quality for their price range, others usually aren't unless you go for a watch of at least 500€/$

swatch has a whole bunch of good colourful watches in the 50-100€/$ pricerange

if you are aiming to spend less, don't buy a watch

@ Sofee

Whoa, thanks! Your help is much appreciated. And yes analog watches, I dislike digital with a passion and I think she's not a fan either.

Yeah I know what you mean by leather/metal differences, as I like watches myself (hence why I had the idea of buying her one). I'm just clueless as to what women like in a watch, as I'm fairly sure most have a taste different than that of males when it comes to this type of item.

I don't really have a preference, though I was somewhat inclined to leather for the reasons you mentioned - it looks less flashy and more confortable, while still being pretty.

As for colours I was thinking about something pinkish/gold/while. I know it seems like a cliche, to associate pink to ladies, but in this particular case it's true as I'm certain she loves pink. :P

I had this one in mind, and I even haggled a lot with the seller via PM. I managed to get him to lower the price 45$, but even so (and with the promotion the watch already had) it's still so incredibly expensive.

I'll check out Seiko, I wasn't aware of that brand. I'll see if I can find any just a good looking and more affordable. I'll certainly ask for your opinion before buying anything, if that's ok with you!

@ Egg

I'll look at Swatch too! I've always associated that brand to kids watches, so I didn't even think of checking Swatch watches. I'll be sure to.

And yeah I was aiming to spend roughly 100 euro, but in watches with 50% or so promotions, so that the actual price of the watch would be higher than what was paid. This is tough to do of course, because a lot of sellers lie about the real price of the watches too to make it seem they're making great offers. I'm willing to go as high as 200 euro, perhaps slightly more.

Edit: Actually, it's probably better if the band is made of metal. I just remembered she's not much of a fan of leather and other products made of animals. Which means I can forget about the one I was thinking of buying.

Edit2: I just confirmed there are metal band versions of the one I considered buying. But they're even more expensive. Ugh.

I once bought a $1 rubber band watch off eBay...never again.

I had a look at the eBay site you mentioned and I like these (under your limit):

http://www.ebay.com/...48AAOSwys5WVg9Z <----- pink face, rest silver/steel.

http://www.ebay.com/...kUAAOSwbdpWYcSp <----- similar to the one I have.

http://www.ebay.com/...ekAAOSwv0tVHzak <----- probably my favourite out of the lot.

http://www.ebay.com/...WkAAOSw3ydVyj63 <----- pink and gold, pretty nice, would be good if you want more pink.

I went through 2 pages but they'll do :P Swatch is pretty good (no bias with being half Swiss ehem), but quite pricey imo, that could be different for you tho. No problemo, inbox is open :)

Thanks! I haven't had time to take a good look myself, but I'll show you my current and small ebay watch list:

These are all very expensive though, but they were the only ones I absolutely loved and approved the first search attempt I made.

The first one is probably my favourite, from your favourite brand too - Seiko. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291612123545?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The second is the first I found, it's an auction. I've talked to the seller and he says the reserve price is 345 USD, I managed to convince him to lower to 300 USD but with the shipping costs it still comes out as 355 USD. It's too much, and besides it's the one with the leather band so it's pretty much out of question. I'm keeping it there just because I went as high as 190 euro in the auction and I'm curious to see if anyone beats me. :P I won't get it though because the seller won't sell for less than 300 euro and I'm not offering more. http://www.ebay.com/itm/361521049553?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The third is the metal band version of the second. Absolutely lovely too (imo) but similar price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/151963916882?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Checking the ones you suggested now. ^_^

(Also Burberry is British, but they use Swiss pieces obviously :P)

Edit:

I find the rose gold + white combination to be gorgeous. Too feminine for me too use, but for a female I think it looks amazing.

I like the Fossil one you posted a lot. The colours are very nice, and it's pretty cheap compared to the ones in my list. Definitely keeping an eye on that one. The Michael Kors one I had actually seen it before, and I was a bit undecided. It's neat, but the colour scheme annoys me slightly. I like the rose + white combination, but rose + gold only doesn't look as nice imo. It's still a cool watch. Another I'll keep under watch.

The Seiko one personally bores me a little (sorry!), I don't like the colour scheme much. I think gold and silver are two colours who stand out a lot alone, but together they annul eachother. But then again it's not for me, I'll try to inquire if she likes the combination of the colours.

The first one is the only one I just flat out don't like. :P I'm not a fan of crystals in watches, makes them look so cheap and fake.

What do you think of the Seiko one in my list? It's much cheaper than the others and would cost roughly 214 euro.

for the record, seiko woudl be the brand I would suggest if you would go for more than a swatch

also a serious tip, consider a second hand watch from a second hand store

watches are like jewelry and are very interesting to buy second handed, just don't do it on ebay because that's like buying a cat in a bag

Oh gosh, champagne taste here 😂 I agree with you on the fake diamonds, they look way too flashy and, well, fake. Your favourite Seiko one looks pretty good, but imo there's too much going on in the face, with the numbers standing out and the circle thingies. Not to say that it isn't good though, I think if you can't find a better one, that would do just fine. It's also solar powered, which can be very beneficial!

Both the Burberry watches you mentioned are gorgeous, if they were a lower price I'd gobble them up in a heartbeat. I like my watch faces like these - minimal(but still with dashes!), tells you what you want without being too distracting. It's also a bit more feminine.

I'm way late but I can second the Seiko suggestion. Back when I did research on a watch for myself I found that Seiko tended to be very good for price vs quality, and I've got one myself now (ended up being way more expensive because of the frickin import costs but hey ho)

Thought I should just post an update: The winning advice award goes to Yuanrang, as he was right (when is he not?!?). :P

She doesn't like watches much. I ended up going for something else.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help though, especially Sofee for taking the time to check watches. Sorry I wasted your time. :P

I would get her makeup, if she's the type who loves makeup. She'll be super happy. If not, I would get her a cute bag. I wouldn't recommend watches because I feel like no one really wears them anymore.
