GOG galaxy launches in beta test

I'm excited about this, but I also dont want to see 800 services pop up. I like having one 'de-facto' client, but then again some competition keeps steam in line.

it is free to play in that you can play the pve parts of the game for free, and to play the pvp tournament aspects you need to either trade or pay. I was a $250 backer in the Dungeon Crawler Tier. I'm hoping it was a good decision.

Has anyone seen HexTCG? http://hextcg.com/ This game looks amazing, everything I want in an online TCG. Apparently it will be partially free to play too. Less than three days left to buy into the beginner bonuses it seems. A teaser video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvymobgRQ-M&list=UUJZM5Yq83ztThHnW1k9a8_g&index=1 One of the most interesting aspects of the game is that it has a pve mode instead of just pvp. Also it seems to have a character development aspect like a true mmorpg and some sort of worldbuilding aspect. Looks very promising. What do you think?

    League Of Legends

Noob with a smurf Why don't you play with volume? :I what is the next patch? http://na.leagueofle...n-3-patch-notes If I understand this right, in this patch they are making farming less important?
  6. So apparently Nvidia has been working away at their proprietary linux drivers and have managed to get a 2x performance increase. Also valve releases steam linux beta (closed beta) with TF2 already ported. http://linux.slashdot.org/story/12/11/06/204238/nvidia-doubles-linux-driver-performance-slips-steam-release-date Does this mean that linux will soon be viable for gaming?

    Hurricane Sandy Closing In

Gas shortage seems to be over here and things are starting to return to normal (power wise). Still so much destruction. Not a fan of these hurricanes.
  8. The idea is that the games wont take configuring to work properly because they are distributed through steam. that makes absolutely zero sense... How? Steam will prepackage everything nicely or customers will complain. It's also why they are only targeting one distro.

    Hurricane Sandy Closing In

And if it wasn't bad enough, a nor'easter is going to ravage the New Jersey coast in the wake of Sandy.

    Hurricane Sandy Closing In

Finally got power and internet back about an hour ago. New Jersey is rationing gas (odd/even like in the seventies). We are screwed for a while because the ports to bring in gas are damaged and many refineries are in New Jersey and offline. Sandy really did a number

    Hurricane Sandy Closing In

Uh... I... nvm Smartphone. Today I managed to get to a friends house about an hour away that has real internet and power.

    Hurricane Sandy Closing In

I live two and a half blocks from the bay in New Jersey, water came up to my neighbors house so I got really lucky. I have been without power for a while, and more importantly, without internet. Luckily I got a generator a few years ago, and it has served us well this year and last. My family in union beach was not so lucky, house damaged heavily and tons of things ruined. Getting gas is a nightmare. Friends down the street from me have their house condemned, some had most of their home washed away. Many places I have come to know and love, or have fond memories of, are either gone. Keansburg amusement park is damaged to the point that it may never open up again, and even so, it will never be close to the same. Iconic features of the jersey shore (and not just seaside and point pleasant, didnt really care for those anyways) are gone. Everything has changed. This is the worst thing I have ever seen irl. whats really sickening is that we are going to rebuild and not address any of the problems that allowed for this to happen. We arent going to get better infrastructure, etc. also as a side complaint the police here really suck at directing traffic. It's not that hard to do.. There are some citizens looking for something to do, let them do it. It would save everyone time.
  14. I am not clear on what criteria to decide which monitor to purchase. I have been looking at these two monitors, and other than the slight difference in size, which is better and for what reason? At that pricerange, are either of these monitors the best choice or is there something significantly better? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236174

    Date shift cipher help

My introduction to cryptography book for my class has an example problem to solve (these are supposed to be dirt easy) but i can't seem to get it. We need to reverse a date cipher to figure out the answer (it's supposed to be as simple as applying it backwards) The text reals "What did Paul Revere say when he finished his midnight ride?" the code is AIWE ! and it says to use the date of Paul Revere's ride, April 18. Following with the example in the book, I should take the letter A and go back zero letters, the letter I and go back 4 letters, the letter W and go back 1 letter, and the letter E and go back 8 letters. This yields AEVW. Thats not a word. what did I do wrong?

  19. I thought this might be relevant for many people here, as most people here have Java installed as a plugin on their web browser (mostly for runescape). http://www.securityw...it-spotted-wild Apparently all web browsers and versions of Java 7 are vulnerable. More information can be found here, as well as an unofficial patch to fix it (Use at your own risk, Oracle is unlikely to release anything until october due to its quarterly update model). http://www.deependre...nformation.html EDIT: Turns out oracle knew about this. Shameful http://www.theregist...ew_about_flaws/ EDIT: Oracle finally patches it http://developers.slashdot.org/story/12/08/30/2312207/oracle-patches-java-7-vulnerability EDIT: Turns out that patch didnt do what it was supposed to http://developers.sl...hed-not-so-fast

New Java Exploit Spotted in the Wild

Go to Java and download Java 7 Update 7, it's fixed the exploit. not so fast http://developers.slashdot.org/story/12/08/31/2215244/java-exploit-patched-not-so-fast

New Java Exploit Spotted in the Wild

Very. It's dangerous to run the plugin. Disable the plugin in your browsers and then run java applications through their downloaded clients (like runescape, minecraft)

    Making Money Online

The best way to make money online is to provide a service that people are willing to pay for. Internet 'labor' is easy to find, especially with countries that have a low cost of living getting online. When someone is willing to work for a few cents an hour, your chances of doing better are slim unless you have some sort of added value for yourself. Consider learning to program, design/draw, or write, and you can freelance.

New Java Exploit Spotted in the Wild

No, just disable the Java plugin in all of your browsers that you use. You can still use java for runescape (if you download the client) and minecraft (if you download the client). And as for making a virus, there are many reasons. There are a few that do it for fun and just because, but these people are overshadowed and outnumbered by those doing it for profit in some way. You can use these exploits to put bad software on other people's computers, and there are alot of ways to monetize that. They can leverage your computer as part of a botnet and rent use of it to other people, or they can infect you with something to steal your credit card information (or otherwise trick you into paying for something), they can steal private information (generally from a company with something worth stealing), or for terrorism (disabling infrastructure).

    Mod MMG on RuneScape Micro-Payments

The HTML5 update sounds amazing. If I am not mistaken this will be one of the first games with a large player base to leverage that technology.

    Guild Wars 2

What is the general consensus on this game? Does it have similar play-ability to WoW? Is it stable enough?
