    Question

If I can access my computer with Safe Mode, can that still mean my hard drive has crashed? :(
  2. Another winter festival finished and it was the longest lasting, most diverse yet. It technically ran for 24 hours, but it spread out at both ends. Many of us are both Slammers and Canters, so we were well represented at the Sal's Realm Xmas Party, at Mudskipper Point, 7pm, on December 26th. Some of us were also in Skype, so you had us arriving in step, then synchronising our movements. We must have looked very psychic for the half a second it took Ea-sl to yell out, 'Are you in Skype without me?!' LOL It was lovely to meet up with all the Slammers, including the great man himself, Salmoneus. MFI, encouraged by the raucous drunks in Skype, was encouraged to disdain his attempted game of hop-hotch and lead a parade instead. It gained momentum swiftly, until he was at the helm of 100s of Slammers. We wove between each other in an ever more intricate dance, never leaving that small area of Mudskipper Point. It looked like a line dance at times; sometimes turning into a fan effect. Very good parade. Bravo! Eventually, we did all leave Mudskipper Point and attached ourselves to Sal, in order to invade Falador Cabbage Patch, then Varrock's GE. It was so sweet to see Sal having to consult the map, while several 100 followers giggled. We really should let him play more, instead of working on the website revamp. A cabbage bombing of the GE naturally ensued. Looming ahead was that Sal's Realm versus Canting Away Clan Wars clash. I was lubricating myself with Southern Comfort and trying not to think about it. On Christmas Day, when myself and my nephews were explaining this to muggle parents/grandparents, we said it was a little like our local playing field football team taking on Manchester United. My Dad said, 'And which ones are you?' 'We'd be the local team'. His eyebrows rose high into his forehead and he commented, slowly, 'Good luck with that.' That pretty much summed up my sentiments too. But there, at the GE, time was closing in. I bade goodbye to my Slammer friends, then instantly they became my 'enemies'. Sabre Grief, Cossack and Josh (Warlock) had spent the previous few days talking tactics. Grief's were very comprehensive, so I read them thoroughly, panicked, then asked for little things to remember instead. My war generals explained, as gently as they could, that I was the leader of Canting, therefore I was going to be piled as soon as I walked in. (Lunar King has since told us that this wasn't in Sal's strategy. They were going for Josh instead. LOL) My job, therefore, was primarily to keep calm. If I could manage that AND remembering tactics, I was to keep myself alive, while attaching myself to Grief and doing whatever he instructed. I had planned to range, but all three of them told me no. Because I was going to be piled, then I should be wearing the best armour that I could. I bought full corrupt dragon, excepting the helm. At first, that was because I thought everyone on Sal's team were wearing red voting hats, while everyone on Canting's team were in green, pointy hats. I'd been in Canifis buying loads of them to give out, even getting Cossack and Lamb Chop to buy out the shop too. However, the hat thing was only mooted by Ea-sl and hadn't been in the Rules of War negotiated between Lunar and Josh. Moreover, my hat is a members' item and was therefore neither use nor ornament in f2p. I couldn't even hand them out. LOL It had been agreed that we fought in world 141, at 9.30pm. The gathering should have happened at 9pm. Sabre Grief, fully understanding that organising members of Canting en masse can be like attempting to herd cats, asked us all to be there at 8.45pm. That gave us quarter of an hour of faffing time; half an hour of equipping time and last minute pep talks; then in to do our best at half past. If anyone wanted extra tuition, Grief would make himself available from half 8. That was the plan. It was nearly half 8 and I was slowly becoming terrified. If there is one thing designed to tip me from quietly a-bit-scared into full out zOMG-I-want-my-Mummy, it's plans changing at the 11th hour, on something that I'm already worried about. The Canting members know this. That's why the chief instruction given to me from the beginning was: Keep Calm. If what happened next was a tactical manoeuvre by the Slammer generals, then it was pure genius. I strongely suspect that it wasn't tactical. They just finished the cabbage bombing and thought, 'right, what shall we do now? Oh! That Clan Wars thing!' Sal's Realm not only moved the war to world 62, but announced that it was happening right now. The nervous Canters coming for extra tuition were suddenly going 'OMG!' and running. The experienced PKing Canters, who were just finishing off whatever they were doing before meandering over, were suddenly dropping everything and rushing. Then you had those who weren't due to even log on until 9. They obviously weren't there. There was mass confusion. Should people be going to the Wilderness Volcano, as Grief had planned, or to Clan Wars, as the call was going up to direct them now? I, naturally, panicked. Then, in the middle of it all, you had Sabre Grief. He called out, into the world and into Canting, that we would start at 9pm, on world 62, but that was the only concession. Canting was to come to the Wilderness Volcano. He would check our inventories and give us our battle plans before we went in. If Canting was going to be annihiliated, then we would go down fighting and in style! I finally remembered to breathe. I rushed to where my troops were gathering and thanked them, blowing a kiss at Grief along the way. Then I opened my blog and wrote the 'Urgent Change' blog. I minimalised the blog to see the game again, only to discover that some of Canting were fighting Sal's, right then, right there. Panic, panic, panic. But over the top of it, Warlock, Grief and Coss were calling out that these are preliminary matches, that don't count. The likes of Egghebrecht and Tabt were in for Canting, at that point, though they fought for Sal's when the actual wars started. Canting was hopelessly outnumbered and were being slaughtered. Grief checked my bag. He told me to remember to set him as caller, then to attach myself to him and hang on. I had to wear my full rune generally, but if/when I was being piled, I was to switch to corrupt dragon. I was to put protect melee on. I was to keep calm and stay alive. *nod nod* (Oh Guthix! I'm scared!) We went in procession towards Clan Wars, just before 9pm. Some people weren't even logged on. Whiskas (Calanon) was running alongside begging us to wait for Pen Knee. By now, I'm seriously entering the early stages of a panic attack IRL. We reached Clan Wars and I set Grief as the caller. Then mentally recited the rest of my instructions to myself. I reached the bit about putting on protect from melee and nearly died on the spot. I'd meant to swap to prayers from curses, but had rushed here too fast and forgotten. I told Warlock and he had me follow him down to the Zammy Altar. There I switched to prayers and told him that I'm really panicking. Warlock looked at me and said, "What is your primary task, Merch?" "Keep Calm." "Well then!" There was nothing else to be done. No time for my motivational speech, even if I'd had the mental faculties to deliver it. Grief had accepted the challenge for Canting to fight Sal's. It came up as big, red writing on my screen. I had two minutes to get my backside into that portal. Pen was on-line. She was tooled up and armoured and she was en route. Grief was telling people in Canting to enter the portal, fall in behind him, then listen to his calls. They would be on the screen, in a prominent position for us to read. We could beat Sal's, if we all stuck together. There were a couple of LOLs and many good lucks. I think that I typed a few lines of encouragement. I hope I did. To be honest, I'd just necked a whole glass of bourbon, following Warlock back from the Zammy altar, and I was still so terrified that I can't recall if I did. I hope I told them to just do their best and to have fun, as that was the very essence of the speech that I'd vaguely prepared. Into the valley of death, portalled the brave twenty-six. Once in, I didn't have time to be scared. I was so focused! It was all a case of 'where's Grief? There he is' *follow Grief* 'Am I being attacked? No. Stay in rune, don't let go of Grief. What's Grief saying?' *let go of Grief to attack Lunar/Don/Silverwhite/whomever else he's just named* *soon as the player is dead, re-attach self to Grief* Then I was attacked! I immediately switched to corrupt dragon armour and protect melee; screamed out that I was being piled; then rushed to Grief's side again. I don't know precisely what happened, as I was too busy sorting out armour and prayers, but I'd stopped going 'oooh' and 'oooww' in-game and my hp had stopped going down. I spam ate anchovy pizzas and swordfish; then nothing else really happened. I was safe. Yay! I switched back to rune, re-attached myself to Grief, then took a moment to look around. To be honest, I hadn't fully understood the scoreboard. Canting had about 23 and Sal's had about 2. I assumed that it was the casualty list. To my mind, Canting only had three left on the field, while Sal's had only lost 2 out of all of their 100s. I bit my lip and looked to see who still lived. Wilfred Owen poems flashed through my mind. "My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity." I was alive, so was Grief. There was Warlock and Cheesy. And Daz and Calanon. And Scheffer, and Zach, and Vaskor, and Kayla, and... and... either we had a LOT of traitors or I had seriously misread the scoreboard. I asked and the answer came as a great, laughing chorus all around me. Those were the numbers of people left on the battlefield, Merch; we're winning a landslide victory. WHAT?! :o NOWAI!!!! HOW???!!!!111!!!? But three of my people are dead? -.- I was about to rush to the cages, to see who had perished, but then it was all over. A huge banner filled my screen. Your clan is victorious. Shock and jubiliation erupted through Canting. I think that only the like of Grief, Coss and Warlock had even envisaged that it was possible, let alone do-able. But then they are proper PKers and they've fought in clans many times. They learned the fundamental lesson, familiar to any who have ever so much as played Soul Wars, that it isn't numbers of players that counts. It's co-ordination. It's acting as a team. Grief explained to us later on that, because we all fell in, when he asked, then all attacked the same player, at the same time, we became unbeatable. On the other side, Lunar King has highlighted the same reason. He said that he called out a name and only about five Slammers attacked. The rest just ran around, doing their thing, to be picked off one by one by Canters. We won 5-0. :D I'd like to thank everyone who turned up, for Canting and for Sal's. Once I'd stopped panicking about it, it turned out to be a really fun event. It placed Canting on a massive high to start our Winter Festival. I left an hour before the Festival began properly, then was back 45 mins later for a 24 hour party. Go Canting! For all of the pictures from the Clan Wars, please visit here.

    Hati Wolf

News: Behind the Scenes Is that Hati Wolf in the game yet? I've been all over Rellekka looking. Fred said that he doesn't think it's been released yet, but re-reading that, it says it's getting removed after January, which would suggest that it is there. I'm getting scared that I'm missing out on pretties! I do have my cake though, after embarking in a goblin massacre, over Port Sarim way, with mmm Pie.

  7. Orly? The Tale Of the Littlest Jedi: Bullied Girl Gets Star Wars Love A seven-year-old girl, Katie Goldman, has been bullied at school by boys. The reason is that girls can't like 'Star Wars', as that's a boy thing. Katie got very upset about this, opting to swap her 'Star Wars' water bottle for a pink water bottle instead. Her Mum blogged about it. Next thing you know, female geeks everywhere are flooding the comments with support messages; the woman who provided the voice for Padme, in the animation, is amongst them; ThinkGeek sent her a lightsabre; then Lucasfilm got wind of the story and sent her a massive 'Star Wars' goodie bag. Win! Comments have now been closed on the original blog (edit: comments can still be left here), but the call is out anyway. Geek Girls, Katie feared that she was all alone, as a girl who likes 'Star Wars'. Here's my response: I, Merch Gwyar of Sal's Realm and Runescape, love Star Wars and I am a girl too! May the force be with you! :(

    The Runewise Interviews

Are you all reading the interviews on Runewise at the moment? Vaskor is celebrating 1000 posts by releasing interviews with all of the fansite owners, including our very own Sal. Loads of major gossip in there, from how he came to start Sal's Realm, through the fact that he doesn't read my blog ( >:D ) and onto the declared goal of playing more Runescape in 2011. I've been enjoying reading all of the interviews, which are coming out pretty much daily. This is on top of the new Fish Fling application AND the new herblore in Dungeoneering tool. I'm yet to use the latter, because I haven't stepped foot in a Dungeon since it was released. Months of going, 'Joooooosh! How do I boost thieving?!' are over. I just use the pretty, little chart to find out. Both of those are on the front page of Runewise. They make me happy. It looks like there are exciting times ahead. If Runewise keeps coming out with useful stuff like this; and Sal's interview tells us that our site is due to have mega things happening to it. Happy days!
  9. I'm so organised this year! I have my photos cropped into tidiness and uploaded before I write the blog report on the day! The album is here. However, I recommend you clicking on the slideshow now, then leaving it to load in another window. By the time you've finished reading this blog entry, it should just about be reading to watch. LOL (Some of the pictures are very big and Imageshack appears to be very slow, at least to me.) Without any further ado, let me give you my report on this year's excellent Canting Away Winter Solstice Festival 2010! Special Guests? The launch was Arcturus's slot, but it's also the most prepared for event in the entire programme (this year or any other!). It was me doing the preparation, totally independently of Arct. Mae dwrg gen i, cariad fi. :D I did try to keep him informed. Hence all of those annoying moments when Arcturus and I suddenly had brief conversations in Welsh, while in Canting, or disappeared off to one side in a gathering. That said, 90% of the plans came to nothing, hence no-one will be very aware of it on the day. It all started with a PM on Sal's from Guildwars. This is the errant son of Canting, who everyone has been talking about on the Canting forums. He wanted to say hello and to tell me that he had read them. He was really touched. I'd not long announced the Winter Festival in my blog and so it was fresh in my mind. I PMed him back and asked if he would be at the launch. A few days later, the reply came that he would. I knew that would be a great surprise to everyone, hence I added the note that there was a surprise guest. It was Guildwars. Once I had one coming, I wondered how many other original and missing Canters could be rounded up. Kayla and I both got on the case. She contacted Reaver and Eman, both of whom confirmed. Meanwhile, I was putting into practice all of those stalking skills that I keep warning Canters about. Do not give out personal information on the internetz! Or else you'll find Merch Gwyar in your cyberhood, several years after you've stopped playing Runescape, trying to get you to come to a Canting party. I even made a MySpace account, in an attempt to get a message to WilliamXtreme. That's how deep we dug! To all of them went the messages, often flung into cyberspace with no knowing if they'd receive it, to meet Merch Gwyar in Lumbridge Church, 10 minutes before Arcturus's event. We would parade into the midst of the Canters and I would introduce names known only from the 'memories' section of the Canting forum. It was highly successful. Too successful, in some ways, because we got the likes of Guildwars and Wolfhe so interested in Runescape again, that they both logged on before the launch! (Then real life happened to both, so they couldn't make it after all.) We also enticed the like of Heb0 into Canting again, after years lost in the wilderness of the Sal's cc. :P This was all fantastic for Canting for the past month. Brilliant times! But it meant that it wasn't the big surprise at the launch that it was going to be. In the event, only Heb0 was waiting in the church. We hung around until a minute to, to see if any of the other missing people had received their messages and would come. Reaver HAD turned up! -.- But he had already gone to the field. It was all good, Heb0 and I joined them. Old Canters weren't the only special guests that we tried to get. I posted a request to get a JMod to the event. I didn't receive a response and neither did they turn up. The forum did warn that many of these are decided on the spot, so no promises can be made. I also strongly considered inviting Excl, Tehnoobshow and Silentc0re, as well as some of the 'famous' players. Neo (not Avatars, the other one) is regularly comments on Vaskor's blog, so I could have asked him. We already had Vaskor and a lot of well-known bloggers there, but I could have specifically invited those who aren't Canting regulars. Then there were people I'd met at Runefest, who might have been aked. However, I'd spent so long trying to find old Canters, that I ran out of time to hunt Runescape celebrities. Plus I got very drunk on Xmas Eve, and Xmas Day, and Boxing Day... As it was, Silentc0re did pop in later on in the day. With beautiful Gaelic intuition, he managed to appear just as kilts, and the attractiveness on men thereof, was being discussed: And he helped us clear that one up. :D Finally, we did have a special guest: Santa Claus. Arcturus had heard about all of these preparations and asked me if we shouldn't just ask Sion Corn to turn up. (Sion Corn is the Welsh name for Santa.) I agreed that this would be a great idea. Then Kayla was asking what new name she should have. I was about to answer my standard, Cougarsrule9, when I recalled that conversation with Arct. This event is the whole reason that Kayla's been walking around with the name SClausualC all month. She borrowed Pinkytm's Santa hat (after me and Kayla both had heart attacks over the price of Santa hats these days. 103m!!), and handed out gifts to those at the gathering. Mostly, she gave out items to be used in the next event. So who were the special guests? Those old Canters who'd been there for a month, which was a bonus prize! Particularly Reaver, who only came on for this event and has now disappeared again back into the ether. Plus Santa Claus. But most of all, each other. A lot of Canting Away turned up for Arct's event and we were all special guests enough. :o 00.00: F2P: Launch! Arcturus is leading the parade. The line seemed to go on for miles, lost in the mists at each end. I was roughly in the middle and I kept swinging my screen round, this way and that, trying to count everyone. It was impossible. After gathering in the usual place (north area of the Lumbridge cowfield), Arcturus had led us on an opening procession around the F2P universe. The idea being that he eventually deposited us back at the River Lum, in time for the next event to begin. There was plenty of time though, when the parade arrived alongside the Wilderness ditch. No parade has ever taken us into the Wild before and Arct really wasn't planning to this time. I watched the conversation play out, as someone joked/suggested that we go over the ditch. Then Arct initially saying no, before asking if we wanted to. Arct's an experienced rev hunter, so the place holds no fear for him. Enough voices said, 'yes', and so he leapt over. To be fair, I was well oiled by now. It didn't occur to me to a) be scared or b) the full implications. We were all in our finery, as befits the opening event, plus we were in a ftp world. This meant that lost members items would be difficult to put back on later. That didn't pass through my mind at all. The danger did, shortly followed by the fact that I was surrounded by red combat people, led by a veteran rev pwner. What could possibly go wrong? We nearly made it. We so nearly made it. At the first sign of a rev, high in the Wild, Arcturus went against all of his natural instincts and led the train away from it. We were closing in on the ditch again and the parade appeared intact around me. But I was watching the cc and I saw the SOS in there. I broke ranks at the ditch itself. I think that many believed that I'd done it just to jump over. At least, the majority of those behind me immediately leapt the ditch to safety. But I was already hurtling back into the wild. Ddswhipk0ed and Elias Erebus were both calling. I wasn't sure which of them was dead at that point, but it turned out to be Dds. I had Fred alongside me, asking what was up. I didn't need to say, he was already reading the cc as well. We raced past the farm and up towards Dragon Island. Elias had been in trouble, but he was now rushing to find Dds's grave too. It's so hard to type and run at the same time, so Dds was giving us brief clues. Fred and I were originally in totally the wrong direction, east instead of west, when we met the rev. Fred was armed, but with a members weapon. I wasn't armed at all. Let's make no bones about this. Fred distracted that rev, yelling at me to run, so I could get away. I hated leaving him, but the counter was ticking on Dds's grave and there was nothing I could do. My usefulness, at this point, was blessing Dds's grave, then rushing to the Zammy temple and, if needful, doubling back to bless Fred's grave. Suddenly a cry came up from Dds, just when he'd said that he was running out of time and wouldn't make it. A passing player had found his grave and repaired it. A huge sigh of relief ensued, but that was only a repair. The player was staying with the grave, repairing it until Dds could get there. This was f2p remember, no teleports. I looked for a white dot on the minimap and that is how I found Dds's grave. I raced towards it and blessed it. Dds suddenly had an hour to reclaim his belongings. Happiness! This was all down to Pecemaker (I'm sorry, I'm writing his name from memory and I know that there was more. There were numbers or maker was in 1337. Can someone let me know the correct spelling, so I can edit this please?), who stayed with me until Dds turned up. I invited him into Canting, where I was delighted to find him still the day afterwards. He refused any reward for repairing the grave. Later on, he led me, Elias and Dds to safety. Meanwhile, Fred had died. I read the news, just as Pecemaker was leading us out, and immediately broke away from the end of the line to go and find his grave too. Fortunately, all of this had not gone totally unnoticed in Canting. Tanyakins was amongst those who had run back to help, once they'd realised we were a man down. She appeared on Fred's radar seconds before he died, so was instantly able to report that his grave was blessed. The rest of Canting were already at the Luos Rebbur memorial event, where emotions were obviously running high. I kept reading people begging us to hurry up and join them. I just assumed that they didn't know that we had Dds and Fred's graves to deal with out here. We made it all, safe and sound, just a few minutes late. :D 01.00: F2P: Luos Rebbur Memorial Event. Luos Rebbur is a member of Canting Away, who died this year IRL. She is very fondly remembered by those who knew her. It was Orix's suggestion to have an event in her honour, which I immediately added in. I then asked Kayla, as her close IRL friend, if she would be able to join us for it. Many of the things that we did were Orix's ideas. That was to fish in the place where Luos had loved to fish; then to give our produce away to low levels in f2p. Luos had been a newcomer to the game, so all that she'd owned in it was hard won or gratefully received. It was basically Orix's idea to help out the latest Luos's in the game, while remembering Luos herself. Naturally, this was one of the most emotional events we have ever run. I rushed into the midst of it and hurried to fill my inventory with crayfish. I've a confession to make. I arrived with 168hp, because of the encounters in the wild, so my first batch of fish were cooked on a fire that Full of Pie had burning. I then quickly nommed the whole inventory, then fished some more for Luos. I'm sure that she wouldn't have minded. >.> We all sat down beside the mill-pond. Kayla gave a really moving speech, that left me with tears in my eyes. I probably wasn't the only one. Unfortunately, there was also a noob attracted by the gathering. He kept running between us calling out invitations to perform fellatio upon him, amongst other things. I think that just about everyone there wanted to scream at him or batter him into submission, but there is little that could be done. I'm really proud of Canting. After one person whispered a quick plea for him to be quiet and explained briefly why we were here, everyone remained silent. Kayla just gave her speech over him and we all listened. It was only afterwards that someone commented, 'Was he just the most reported person in Runescape today?' or words to that effect. Of course, this silence hadn't alerted him to another fact. Elias Erebus is a PMod. As we started our parade to Falador drop room, Elias hung back. I know that muting him and referring him to Jagex was something that Elias found very distasteful. In the circumstances though, I think it was a fair report. The interupting of a poignant moment was immoral, but not against the rules. However, the vulgarities that he was offering were inappropriate. Thank you for doing that Elias. There was a slight technical hitch at the drop party room. It turned out that it wasn't an official drop party world. :D This hindered us performing the second part of Orix's idea, which was to distribute all that we'd caught. Those who had been in the chat at the time also had brought other things with us. I'd been running around the wild with half a million gp on me for a start! LOL Reading Kayla's blog, and canting with Zach later, I've since realised that there was a miscommunication somewhere along the way. I, and I know Coss too, believed that the handing out of stuff was one of the important aspects of the event; while Kayla, Zach and apparently most of Canting had no idea that that was in the plan. I really should learn to explain things better in blogs. :o What happened then was that everyone dropped their crayfish on the floor to the surprise of me and Coss. Then, later on, when I shepherded everyone into an official drop party world, Kayla's cries of 'don't add all that money!' to us weren't one of those 'I think the lady doth protest too much' moments. She genuinely didn't want the event over-run with strangers. *sigh* Either way, I think that the reality turned into a compromise between what we all thought was going on. It was a beautiful in-game Memorial for a lovely lady. One of the really touching moments was handing over Luos Rebbur's star. Luos was on my friends list. I'm constantly being pressured by people for their own place on it. Nevertheless, I'd left it up to Kayla what happened. If she wanted Luos to stay on my friends list forever, then that would have happened. Kayla chose to let someone else have it. I let her choose who. The Memorial event was when it happened. Let me say something here - Kayla seriously agonised over who should have it. She and I sat in her chat channel for ages, while she went through her list of worthy recipients. If it was up to us, everyone who ever poked their nose around the door of Canting would have a star attached to their name. It's hard work to choose just one person from all of those who habitually come in. It's not fair to tell you who ended up on her short-list. I will say that she eventually, with much cringing and a heavy heart, brought it down to two people: Orix and Elias Erebus. This was Luos's star. Orix had planned this event and Elias had just dealt with the person trying to disrupt it. Kayla settled on Orix. I gave a speech to that effect to the assembled Canters. There were cries of 'good choice'. However, I'd missed something here. A few weeks ago, a star had become free. I'd reached into my hat and it was Orix's name that was picked out. Orix already had a star. While the rest of Canting wiped their tears, then erupted into laughter at my noobishness, Kayla went for the other person that she'd wanted. Elias was given his silver star right then. An excellent choice. :D I went abed then. I have heard that the events that went on during my sleeptime were all amazing. :D 10:00: P2P: Merch Gwyar's house party I was so excited about my house party! I've been keeping my latest refurbishments a secret for weeks. I'd been working hard for week to raise the 15m that I knew I'd need for the final two Construction rooms. On December 16th, I got 96 Construction. I immediately tore out my demon treasure room, which gave me two rooms to play with. I added in the hellhound room and then, finally, the steel dragon treasure room! This is the highest level dungeon room that you can have. When I'm 99, I'll put the demon treasure room back in, but that was a dead end anyway, so no-one has mentioned missing it. When I installed the steel dragon, I was bouncing off the ceiling. I kept nipping home to grin at it. All the time, I was biting my tongue, so that I didn't accidentally tell anyone it was there. I wanted it to be a surprise, when they went down there. Egghebrecht had worked it out. He'd looked at the level, then at the fact that I appeared to be quietly selling bits of my bank and training money-making things, as well as keeping myself up to date on good items to flip. He called it perfectly correctly. :D I wasn't disappointed by the reaction. At both this party and the mirror one at ten, I had people going down full of indulgent smiles, only to comment, 'Ok, this is genuinely quite dangerous now.' It's not just the creatures. My friend, Miyamashi, and I once spent hours devising the most evil dungeon we could. The traps are very strategically placed. Back before I'd finalised my plans, Josh told me that the most perilous aspect of any POH dungeon are the PKers. I built in plenty of hiding places for PKers too. I also did my best, while people were trying it out, to range them to death. I'm not the world's greatest PKer, but hopefully it was a good impersonation of one. (Mainly a good impersonation of one dying horrifically, as they tended to retaliate.) Having seen even red combat levels having to try a few times to get through, I'm feeling very smug about it now. :D So yes, delayed announcement: I'VE FINISHED MY HOUSE! Everything left is purely cosmetic. I want an abyssal demon head to stuff for the wall (or the kalphite queen); the rest of the costume room's clothes and items for the chests and wardrobes; castle wars and smithing armour for the skill halls; then that demon room replaced. I've only just realised that I was so enjoying the reaction to the dungeon, that I forgot to show people the statue upstairs. LOL I'd better have another party then. Unfortunately, real life happened ten minutes before the end of the party. One of the reasons that the festival was moved to after Xmas was to avoid situations, like in 2009, when my uncle came to deliver presents halfway through. This year, the weather has been so bad, that he couldn't make it before Xmas. He arrived during my house party. -.- Fortunately, Ultralisk was there and he was very happy to invite people to his level 99 house. They apparently really enjoyed his dungeon too. His dungeon holds a record for being impenetrable. No-one has yet made it to HIS steel dragon! 11:00: P2P: Trouble Brewing with Tanyakins I arrived back in-game towards the end of Trouble Brewing, but still managed to ninja in a game and half. :D It was great fun, as Trouble Brewing always is. It was also very mellow. They'd decided from the off that it was a non-saboteur game, so none of the newcomers had to deal with pipes and bridges in flames. LOL From what I've heard about the beginning bit, that was even better. Full of Pie was busy giving lessons to those new to the minigame. By the time I got there, they were all brewing like professionals! I'm particularly pleased that Lillantra got to be there. She's been waiting for a moment to try out Trouble Brewing; and specifically stayed up relatively late to be there at the Festival. One hour is never enough time there, so I can see us heading back soon. End of Part One.
  10. 12.00 Noon: F2P World 62: Mid-point Event hosted by Kayla The mid-point event was one of the more unique ones that we've ever had. The idea for it apparently arose out of a conversation between Kayla and Zach. It was a roaring success! It was not only enjoyed by Canters, but also attracted the attention of passing players, some of whom joined in. One player, Ahrimtyras, announced that he'd recorded it for You Tube. I have no idea of his YT name though. Kayla had us standing in a row across Varrock Castle courtyard. Then she called out a line from a random song. The first person to shout out the next line was allowed to move one square forward. She covered a variety of genres, old songs, new songs, traditional songs, pop songs, rock songs, no Manic Street Preachers though. :D However, I did very well. I think I even got the first song correct. 'I paid my dues.' 'Time after time!' Bohemian Rhapsody ftw! After a few rounds of that, she switched to describing Runescape items. The first person to call out, correctly, what it was, got to move forward. Lucas 2am was brilliant at this. He was halfway to the finishing line before the rest of us were even out of first base! The only slightly annoying thing was the Varrock guards wandering across the cobbles. I mean, I know that they have a job to do and all, but I do know their king. There should have been more respect, I feel. Fortunately, Helm Lardar taught them the error of their ways. He nipped to the bank and fetched his sling. A few well-timed slingshots later and no-one was walking anywhere near us. Until they respawned. Rawresome and Lucas also applied swords, when they came close. Ok, perhaps in retrospect the death penalty was a little extreme for merely patrolling their 'hood... 13:00: F2P World 62: Heimland Games with Tanyakins I enjoyed all of the events during the Festival, but if you had to force me to pick a highlight, then this was surely a contender. I missed a portion of it, but if I hadn't, then I might have gone with the others and missed the brilliance. Tanyakins led us through the cupboard, in Varrock Square, and into the Heimland Games. I had a brief flurry of snowballs and built a snowman, but I was starving to death IRL. I told Tanya that I was going for noms and that I'd be right back. I returned about 20 mins later, having cooked my dinner, to play and eat at the same time. I logged into the Heimland Games and couldn't find anyone at first. I could see them canting in the cc, but none of them were in the snowman pen. I had a meander around and then saw a purple dot. It was Shirkar, over in the snowball area. I hurried over and immediately pelted him with snowballs. Not a lot happened for a few seconds. I bit into my cheese on toast and turned the screen around, still looking for the rest of them. Then threw another snowball at Shirkar. This seemed to rouse him, because suddenly there was a cheery greeting and a snowball smacking into my gob. This was war! In the snowball field, the first option is to pelt. That gets quickly boring. You can pelt without too much trouble, but all you have is a snowball flying and not a lot else. The second option is much more interesting. It's also the promoted option, as you can tell by the sodding great 'throw' button on the screen. With this one, your snowball will not connect if you don't have a clear shot. The snowbanks all around are places to hide behind. Each connected snowball awards you with a point. Each snowball that hits you is deducted from your points. It is hard work to run, hide, press throw, dash out AND still connect. It took a few minutes to work out some strategy, then it was a desperate battle for supremacy of the snowball field. Laugh? Yes, I did. I laughed until tears were flooding down my cheeks. I had the giggles so bad! Me and Shirkar were ducking and diving around those snowbanks, with perfect shots thwarted by forgetting to press 'throw' first (hence it was a mere, scoreless pelt). He'd be sitting down behind a bank and I'd ninja around, ready for attack. He'd scramble at the last minute, practically Parkouring over a bank to whack me one instead. LOL I kept reporting that I was winning. I'd got up to a stunning 6 points once. As the hour crept up, I was rushing to get one more point without him crashing it. I wooted and crowed at finishing with 1 point. Then Shirkar informed me that he had 26! Noooooooo! LOL I came so close to demanding a rematch, but Lucas's GOP event was about to start and Shirkar was going for some food anyway. It was a fantastic event, that I'm sure has lost something in the telling. I guess you had to be there. Thank you, Shirkar, brilliant time! As for everyone else, it turns out that they'd gotten bored early on. They'd all relocated to Daemonheim for some dungeoneering instead. :o They kept trying to get me to come too, but I was already fully engrossed in the hilarious fun that was that snowball fight with Shirkar. As he commented to me, after I'd told him about the throw > pelt option, "They would never have gone, if they'd known how to properly play this." It is one of the great secrets up there, from what I can see, but I thoroughly recommend everyone taking a good friend/clan and trying it out. But not Shirkar. He's mine! :D I have 27 points to claw back on our rematch!! 14:00: F2P World 62: Great Orb Project trip with Lucas 2am I always enjoy the clan trips to GOP; and I always plan to go back in between festivals, but fail. This was practically a special request of mine, when we were compiling the programme. I was grateful for Lucas volunteering to host it. On the day, I was a little late. I was still attempting to throw snowballs at Shirkar at two minutes past, totally forgetting that we were in f2p. That meant that none of my teleports worked. I had to run like the clappers to get there and still missed the first round. Then I had to take my hat off and find the deposit bank in the Runecrafting Guild. It was all good though, because I went to the woman who assigns you a team and she put me on the green one. I got a green, pointy hat straight back. I stayed with the green team then. Not that it did me much good. The green team lost every round! I was jubilant once, because we managed to take a single altar. We were really bad. Mind you, there was one altar where I swear there was a green orb until about halfway through! Renikins and I were running around like headless chickens trying to find one. :o I was so utterly focused on trying to beat the yellow team that I totally forgot to take a screenshot for the Festival album. :o Sorry Lucas! But I was enjoying myself. :D 15:00: P2P Barrows with Cossack I was so late for this one that I considered telling Coss that I'd step out of it. The others had long since completed their first pillage through, before I'd even made it to Burgh de Rott. :D There were three factors delaying me. The first was that this was the fifth event of the day to needlessly deviate from the proscribed world 25 for f2p and world 77 for p2p. Some events have to change worlds, because the nature of them is better suited to a bespoke world (one with lootshare, for example). But in the main, I try to keep it to the advertised worlds. The festival programme is designed for people to drop in and out as the fancy, or timezone, takes them. If the programme says 'world 77, unless otherwise stated', then our dude is going to log onto world 77. It wastes time for them to then log out and into another one. Plus, if one person deviates, followed by another in the same mode (p2p or f2p), then the next event is likely to continue in the same, changed world. Coss wanted to go to world 71. I bit his head off, then came to my blog and altered the information in the programme. I came back to find Kayla, Tanyakins and Lucas all contrite about having taken their events to 62, instead of 25; while Coss was moving his back to 77. I did the diplomatic chat in Canting with them all, then came back to my blog to change Coss's back to 77 there. All of this while still standing in the Runecrafting Guild, as everyone else had taken off. I was also desperate for the loo. So I went there and discovered why I'd bitten Coss's head off. *lowers voice to a whisper* Women's troubles *nod nod* *unlowers voice* Apologised to him, though he was now in the depths of Barrows and I'm not sure that he spotted it. It's here for him to spot now. :) I realise that I might have been a little touchy at the time. >.> Nevertheless, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves over there. I'd also got Sheblok waving for attention. Sheblok is now mentioned. I stood in the Runecrafting Guild horrifically late for the event by now. I dragged my toe on the floor, debating whether it was worth going anyway. I'm not a Barrows expert. Last time I went, I had to be rescued by Zach, after getting lost in the tunnels. Going now would mean preparing for it without Coss to guide me through my inventory and worn armour, as I'd watched him doing, via Canting, for those who were on time. I decided to go to Burgh de Rott anyway. I could always potter around in my bank, but I would be close enough if there was an emergency. If someone called for a blessed grave or extra supplies, I'd be in a good position to help Coss answer the call. I reached Burgh's bank to find another player in there. I didn't write his name down. :o But he advised me on armour and the such, allowing me to go. I know that I could have just asked Coss or any of the other Barrows veterans, in Canting at the time, but they all sounded very busy down there. I took off to the mounds and dug down to take on my first brother. I had to bother Coss then, as I didn't have a clue what to pray or whether to use range or melee. It was all good. They were only too happy to help out and I made it to the central chest without any problems at all. I had a lovely surprise there. Inside the chest was Verac's bra!!! Yay! Definitely worth going then! :D 16:00: P2P: Rogue's Den with Helm Lardar Poor Helm Lardar. He was really looking forward to taking us to Rogue's Den, but real life happened to him. He turned up later on and did the crying emote for ages. I've promised him that we'll do it again, with him alongside. The rest of us went though. It's been ages since I went to Rogue's Den, so I'd forgotten the route. I used to just go click, click, click, run, click, click, click, with the route completely memorised. I'd be through in minutes. This time, I had to check every bit of floor and wall before I moved through it. I never did make it to the centre! However, most of the reason that I didn't make it was because I spotted this door and wondered what was behind it. Thus I found the viewing gallery. I didn't even know that there was one! I spent the rest of the session thoroughly exploring that, while watching the rest of Canting on the floor below. You can make it through the entire maze, even to the centre. I found Yrrah there, ready to open the chest, so he ran over to say hello. He then announced that he could see Tanyakins on the home stretch, so he waited for her to join him, before opening his chest. I couldn't get down though, as the door is one-way. Otherwise, it would have been a perfect cheating route! LOL I was up there for the last about 20 mins. It's always good to find places that you didn't know existed. It also gave me opportunity to speak with various Canters, as I stalked them from the terraces. Fun times. 17:00: P2P: Castle Wars Event hosted by Nezantra I pwnt Nezantra with his own barricade trick! :D Ok, he got out of it about 2 seconds later, but for a moment there, I had him stopped! :P Nez had written a guide for Castle Wars, when he announced his intention to take us, which I'd dutifully read. It explained how and when to use barricades. When Nez is trying to nick off with your team's flag is a perfect example of a good time to use one. I dropped the barricade and it must have bashed his knees up, as he collided into it. Unfortunately, he had the means to blow it back up again, so he still got away. *sigh* By now, I was in a Skype call with half of Canting, including Nez. He could hear my evil laughter, as I thwarted him. Well, slowed him down. Egghebrecht took the opportunity to explain to me about explosive vials. I took some of them off the table too. I was also asked what team I was on. I had no idea. I was asked the colour of my cape and hood. I replied that I was on the green seguing into orange team. I wasn't believed. In the spirit of no pic, no proof, here's the greeny-orange team: The consensus by everyone else was that I was on the red team with a colour glitch. We played three games in all, I think. The first was on a Castle Wars world, which was lagging to the point of me not being able to move. I'd commented going in that my ping was 349. :o Fortunately, Onyz Death was with me, so I attached myself to him and had auto-retaliate on. Most of my fighting, at that point, was through Onyz moving me into the thick of battle and me firing arrows because someone had hit me. However, I wasn't the only person so affected, so Nezantra had a quick rethink of the situation. He called us all out of that world and into 77. He judged us with enough players to complete Castle Wars teams. 77 is an American server, so it's still a little laggy for me on my British ISP, but nothing like that other world had been. (This, incidentally, is why you never see me on the Canting official world, outside festival days. :P ) Now that I could move, I wasn't so reliant on the lovely Onyz Death to help me play. That didn't stop me still following him into dangerous situations, but I was now also quite capable of moving myself into them too. It was hilarious listening to the Skype call too. Both Nez and Egg were in there and they were on opposing teams. They were also both going for each other's flags, so the laughter and roars were fun to hear. Meanwhile, I was triumphantly dropping barricades everywhere, until the gentlemen asked me to stop. I was using up our whole team's allocation! LOL Most of those were trying to stop Fred killing me. I failed. :P I also have to remark upon Dr Leviathan's costume changes. How many pieces of armour and robes did he take in? Everytime I saw him, he was wearing something different! If all Castle Wars games were like these ones, I'd have had my level 3 armour for my house years ago. I still need that. I wonder if I could convince that many Canting members to come on a non-festival day... >.> 18:00: F2P/P2P: Hide and Seek with Rafftank I do enjoy the hide and seek events, but this one was personally problematic. It wasn't Rafftank's fault, it was my internet connection. I don't know whether it was the strain of Skype, plus Runescape on an American server, or whether it was the snow outside. I've always got a slightly dodgy connection anyway, because I live up on a hill. We can only use mobile 'phones from a spot on the front step or from an upstairs room; while Sky TV took forever to tune at first. Either way, I disconnected sooo many times during this event that it stopped being vaguely funny. Even worse, I'd keep getting back into the game only to find false clues being shouted out. I don't know what was going on there. From what I can gather from Kayla's blog, some of them decided that Rafftank's event wasn't worthy of them, so they splintered off to play their own. I'd disconnect, come back on, read a clue and start thinking on where they could be; then discover it wasn't Rafftank's clue. Bearing in mind that I was PMSing like made anyway, so it was only disconnecting at a certain moment that stopped me kicking the next person giving a false clue. By the time I was back on, I'd taken some deep breaths. No-one else seemed to be as confused nor wound up as I was, so I figured that I was missing half of the conversation and therefore it wasn't as disrespectful to Rafftank, as it seemed from my snippets of it. On the good side, I won one round! :o The clue had been about enchanted trees, so I initially went to the enchanted forest. Then ran to Lletya, where I bumped into Vaskor with the same idea. It was the right vicinity, but wrong place. The next clue led me straight to the gates of Prifddinas, where I found Rafftank! Woot! Nez was right behind me, so we had a little dance, until I disconnected again. :D One of the other was a funny clue too. It was all about Thai food, in Gielnor. Fred and I both had the same idea about the gnome stronghold. Nez already knew this one. He was in Skype blurting out that it was the food seller in Tai Bwo Wannai. (There's a pun on Thai food in the examine text.) I told Fred and he got there before me. I couldn't get a teleport out of my bank in time, because the constant disconnecting meant that I had to put my pin in. Oh well! I'd have never have got it, if Nez hadn't slipped and said it aloud anyway. :D The last clue was in the Wild. He had warned us in his blog! I ran up there in default clothing and made it nearly to the agility arena, where I was convinced he was hiding, before getting killed by a rev. While I stood in Soul Wars, ready to run up, Rafftank's next clue made it obvious that I'd been in the wrong place anyway. Time for a rethink. Meanwhile, Zach was thinking about this and the earlier parade and proposing that the Wilderness should be out of bounds at festivals. I was easy. I hadn't been wearing anything, so I hadn't left a grave. Zach then bumped into an orc, close to the level 50 whooshy thing. He got all dramatic in his role-played version of how it would sound if someone died up there right now. Only Nez and I both thought it was for real. I hurtled back up into the Wild to find Zach's grave. I arrived just in time to see Nez dying, whilst on the same mission. I raced in and blessed Nez's grave, then lured the rev onto the volcano, so that it wasn't standing over said grave. Meanwhile, I was looking out for Zach's grave. I still had 10 prayer. I could have tried to bless it too. As the conversation played out, Zach suddenly realised why Nez and I were up there. He gushed out his apologies and offered to come, not realising that we'd taken it as fact. It was all good though. I was still in default clothing and Nez reclaimed his stuff from his grave. 19:00: F2P/P2P: Canting Xmas Song RSMV Thank you so much Massecure360! This was the keynote spot, that is always the moment for something big. Simple has come up with the ideas for the previous two festivals. We had a line of fire from Varrock to Falador, then a marathon to beat. I asked around, but no-one had anything for it. I wracked my brains and wondered how feasible it was to record a Canting Xmas Song RSMV in a single hour. Not having made one myself, I asked Massecure for advice. I made it very clear that it was sounding him out for his knowledge, I wasn't asking him to do it. If he'd said that it was fool's talk, then I'd have thought of something else. Massecure didn't say that at all. He said that it was infinitely do-able and, moreover, he offered his editing services. Woot! At the time, Massecure didn't think he'd be around for the day. If he was, he would do the filming too, but it was unlikely. I'll be completely honest. I told him that I'd film it, then put it completely out of my mind until the day before the event. -.- On Boxing Day, I hurriedly started googling for Xmas songs and backing tracks, then downloaded some software to record Skype conversations. MFI and I tested it out. It worked. I was just starting to panic over wondering how one plans a RSMV, when a message landed in my Sal's inbox. Massecure's IRL plans had been postponed, would I like him to take over this event entirely? Yes please. :D I didn't resume worrying until 7pm the next day, when I raced back from Wildy grave duties to find a distinct lack of Massecure anywhere in Canting. Someone asked what was happening and I replied, "I don't know! We need to wait on Massecure." To which Atomical piped up, "I am Massecure." He'd only been there for several hours. I just didn't know about the name change. LOL I'd also switched my computer off and restarted it. It sorted out the disconnection issue. Hurrah! Organising Canting, at the best of times, can be like attempting to herd cats. Organising Canting en masse, into standing in certain places, saying a line, then waiting in turn for the other half a million members to do the same, takes patience and humour the size of a small mountain. Fortunately, Massecure has this. He became very good at calling out a name several times, then waiting, or moving on, while they were afk. I helped out the best I could, by marshalling people in line via Canting or Skype, or, in extreme situations, smacking them up the face with a well-aimed snowball. But it was all good fun and I believe that everyone present got featured at least once. It was a fascinating process to watch as well. Massecure wandering around with his Orb, acting as stage manager, cameraman, director, producer and editor. He made it all look so effortless. You also had the cam-whores, in whose ranks I am surely present. LOL We were in the background, making snowmen or having snowball fights, on the basis that we not only looked very festive, but might be in shot. :P We really are those people who, if this was IRL filming, would be waving and shouting out, 'Hi Mum!' I can't wait to see the finished product. :D 20:00: P2P: KBD Trip with Nezantra Nezantra was delayed by real life, so Zach actually organised this trip. Nez did catch up with us later on, so he didn't miss out. I was about half an hour late, as I nipped off to cook my tea, then nom it. By the time I arrived, they'd only just found a world. :D Poor cariadiau, they'd been hopping for ages, because no-one wanted to crash a world. That isn't in the spirit of Canting, as Zach pointed out. :D Unfortunately, the hour and the holidays meant that severely limited the worlds that we could be on. We ended up in Norway. I had none of the hard work. I just turned up in time to enter the first lair with them! Unfortunately, it was without any weapons. I punched the KBD to death for the first round (with much help from the mass of Canters with whips, crossbows and other sharp, pointed objects). Then I had to nip to the bank to actually pick up something for myself. :P They were all taking the proverbial out of me, when I came back. I'd dressed for melee, including carrying an extreme superset. But, at the last minute, remembered that my range is 14k behind my melee stats. So I grabbed my crossbow and bolts too. Hence I waltzed back into the KBD, in full melee outfit, supping extreme attack, strength and defence, then firing bolts. My choices were questioned. It turned out that my attire was not only not fashionable for rangers, but was also nerfing my hits. When I realised that KBD wasn't surviving long enough for me to get any meaningful range xp, I swapped back to my whip. It was amazing how suddenly my hits rose. :P Having this as a two hour event really worked. There was no sense of urgency, so we could relax into it. It's made me wonder if we shouldn't have hour and half to two hour slots for everything. There would be fewer events, but we often settle into an event just in time to leave it. It might make sense to stay at each of them for longer. KBD died very quickly each time, so we were able to mess around without any fear of anyone being killed. The closest we got to a casualty was when MFI, lured by the raucous laughter in Skype, came to join us. He met a rev orc outside and got teleblocked. He was in danger of spiders nibbling him to death, until I took a Forthinry bracelet out to him. With that on, he was able to get into the absolute safety of the KBD lair. :D Mostly though it was a tableau of turning ourselves into seals and turkeys, or doing skillcape emotes, in between occasional instant slaughters of that poor dragon. Hours of fun. :D 22:00: P2P: Merch Gwyar's house party I've already pretty much covered this one, in my report from the earlier event. There were more people, but it followed a similar pattern. 23:00: FTP: Race from Al-Kharid to the Mind Altar hosted by Fred Fred had been at my house party, so I just assumed that he was somewhere in Al-Kharid. I wasn't actually being that attentive, if I'm honest, as I was dying to go to the loo at the time. Leaving my house party meant a world swap to f2p, so I couldn't just go afk for two minutes and hope for the best. I ensured that no-one was still in my house, then hurriedly logged off. It took a few minutes longer than expected, then I was back, in world 25, to find a posse of Canters sitting around waiting in the desert. "Where's Fred?" No-one knew. :o We now know that work had happened to him and he wasn't able to get back to us in time. The longer we waited, the more obvious it was that he wasn't coming back. I considered just re-opening my house, but many of the party now were f2p. They aren't able to participate in every event, so it wasn't fair to take this slot from them too. I asked for a vote on what to do, suggesting that we, perhaps, sat and chatted. We don't often do that, without doing other stuff too. My mind was racing. We could tell stories or have a party piece, entertaining each other with emotes or things. I didn't air these, they were just in reserve. Ordinarily, I'd have taken over the advertised event. That's what I see my job as mostly being (except for the hours when I hand over to Zach). If an event is without its host, and no-one else is able to take it in that player's stead, then I'm the last resort. I'll lead it. Whatever it is. Unfortunately, Fred's event seemed a bit involved. He knew what he was doing, but by the time I'd thoroughly read it and worked out what he was planning, our time would have been up. But then there was Vaskor. While I'd been on the loo, he must have had a head start on studying the game-plan. He announced that he could do this for Fred. He tinkered at the edges of the proposed event, no doubt for time constraints purposes. It wasn't a race to the mind altar now, it was to the musician north of Fally. Also, there would be just one checkpoint, which was the centre of Varrock. Marks, get set, goooooooooo! I hurtled off into the desert north of Al-Kharid. Split second decisions had to be taken. Gate or straight north to the hole in the fence? Musician or no musician? We over-took each other, jostling elbows, then fell back, as energy levels wilted or wrong decisions were taken on the route. Elias Erebus was miles ahead of me at one point, then I zoomed past near Varrock. I was surprised to find Elias not in the roll-call at the checkpoint for a good minute. Then I was halfway to Falador, walking as fast as I could, when Lamb Stop raced past me in full Bandos, barely out of breath. Elias then rushed past us all to take first place! (Thus proving that stopping at the musicians was worth it.) We rested, giggling, at the Fally musician. While we sat there, I saw a level 5 player getting beset by the highwayman. I jumped up to save him, which happened with a single punch. This meant that I missed the warning on the return race. I suddenly heard, 'go!', and everyone ran past. Ooops! I sprinted off, as fast as I could. But I'm a fast learner. I was at the musician in Varrock alongside Elias this time! And I came third in the second race. Woot! Thank you for organising that, Vaskor, it turned out to be really good fun. :D And Fred :D, sorry that work Frednapped you. :D 24:00: F2P: Close-down event. It wasn't until we got to the close-down event that I realised that no-one had volunteered for the slot. -.- Because it had 'close-down event' written in it, I hadn't stopped that when I highlighted the empty slots in red font. Oh well! As I said before, when there's no host for the slot, then I'm the host. :D I suggested a gathering in the Lumbridge cowfield, which is what everyone expected anyway; then a parade around f2p. Hardly the most original of ideas, but I meant 'around f2p'. I took everyone in a long train down through Lumbridge Swamp, circled some buildings (trying to copy MFI's trick from the Sal's party), then led everyone up the east wall of Fally into the pretty stones. I gave them the tour guide talk about what these stones were, before heading into Fally itself. I had everyone bank. We were going to parade the circumference of the Wild. Everyone emerged in either default clothing or with only three items. Revs could batter us all they liked, we'd survive. Incidentally, I did hold a vote on this first. The result was overwhelmingly 'yes', though a couple said 'no'. They were convinced, once they realised that we'd be banking first. It was a high-spirited, uneventful meander up to level 44. Then we met the rev knight. I immediately turned tail to lead my Canters away, but Arcturus ran from behind me and started fighting it to protect us. He, being second in the line, took everyone else with him. LOL With no train anymore, I ran after Arct to watch his battle (and to ensure that he really had banked). He soon died, leaving just his bones behind him. I picked them up, while Vaskor hurried to my side. As Fred had done 24 hours before, Vaskor instructed me to run away. He would deal with the situation. I hurried to get Arct's bones to safety and to find the rest of the Canters. Vaskor delivered a few whacks with a rune sword, then ran in my wake. The knight was right behind him. I was just south of the level 44 whooshy thing, when it sailed onto it. Vaskor rushed off, but No Cute 1 was in its path. I knew what to do! I'd been taught this hundreds of years ago by Henrique, when he was doing it to real PKers. Vaskor was clear; Cute was clear; the rev was right in the centre of the whooshy thing. I dived onto the pillar and pressed to activate. Nothing happened. The knight was on me now, instead of Cute. It was ok, I'd just misclicked. I pressed it again. Nothing! What?! Oh! We were in f2p. The whooshy thing doesn't work here. That was my dying thought, as I watched the others get clear. But at least the knight hadn't got Cute. She was in full iron... I came back. I'd banked my quest cape, hat and glory, because they were useless in F2p. I put on my Canting green cape from the day before, plus an addy platebody, dropped by the KBD earlier. I then grabbed a rune skimmy and I was set! I actually did have a grave up there, because Arct's bones had been a fourth item. It had been blessed, so I just followed the yellow arrow into the right direction. Everyone else was safe and sound, all congregated around the cemetery. I got as far as the drunken musician, then rested there, explaining that I wasn't too sure where that was, but I'd find them. Vaskor appeared out of the mists beside me. They were all roughly three squares north. LOL We resumed our parade, though Zach took the lead this time. We collected Arct's bones from under my grave and Zach ceremoniously buried them. Then we bumped into more revs. Elias fought the werewolf, while I got attacked by an orc. I ended up cowering, with 56xp (that's 56, not 560), in the Zammy church, while everyone scattered. Zach came back for me once the coast was clear. We all met back up in the cemetery and the parade went on. We actually did make it, despite more adventures and a genuine grave moment, when Choco unwisely came after us in proper armour. Cute got lost, but took it as an opportunity to explore the Wild. Others left, for various reasons ranging from sheer terror to IRL happening; while Arnleg Endol came to join us. Nevertheless, a handful of those who entered did cover the cirumference of f2p Wild, then left over the ditch at the other end. It was only when we were safe, that Cancsis, who'd stayed throughout, admitted that he'd been scared out there. I'd taken his silence for being really relaxed! Brave person! It takes bravery to stay, when you're scared. There was only one place to go now. Knocking on 2am, we arrived back where it had all started: Lumbridge cowfield. Another fantastic festival over and done. Thank you very much to everyone who came and everyone who organised events. You made the day. <3

    Free Elite Clue Scroll!

I'd heard about the free elite clue scroll before. Nihil-ist had made a point of telling everyone who entered Canting, after he found out about it. I'd also heard whispers before that, without really checking it out. I was too busy making money for steel dragons at the time. Then Fred blogged about it, while I had time to explore. I read his blog, noted his pretty rewards and set off to get my scroll. This is something that's only possible after the 'Do No Evil' quest. I was on Moonclan Island, after going a load of runecrafting, so I tried that location first. No clue scroll in the 'hood. Next I tried Tirannwn, no joy. Then the penguin iceberg, nothing. I resigned myself to the fact that I had Fred's luck, so made my way to Meiyerditch. It took me bloody ages to get one of the vyrewatch to take an interest in me. I was waving like mad and jumping up and down, I was cheer emoting and running up and down past them. Finally one of them woke up enough to stun me. Did I want to be eaten or go to the mines? Mines pl0x! Bit of mining and running around later, I was in the remote spot where my Ava's Alerter should have bwukked. No bwuk in sight. I took my alerter off and inspected it. Did this thing have to be turned on or something? I shook it. Was it broken? I whinged in Canting and Kayla suggested that she come with me. She could ensure that I was in the right places then. I was fairly sure that I had been, but desperation was setting in. I thanked her and met her in Lletya. We tried the Tirannwn spot, where she'd found her scroll. Nothing. We took off to the penguin place and Kayla started running in the opposite direction to where I'd checked. Huh? Ah! I'd misread it. I thought that the possible clue spot was on the little hunter island to the north-east. It wasn't. It was on the main island to the west. Soon as I joined her there, my alerter bwukked like bwukking was going out of fashion. Happiness reigned. My clue scroll seemed to take forever. This wasn't helped by the fact that my computer kept randomly shutting down. I searched the internetz and found that this is a known and perennial problem with my make of PC. It's a HP Pavilion Slimline. Google it and you'll find pages devoted to its tiny internal fan and propensity to overheat. It goes in stages with me. I'll go weeks without it happening, then it'll happen every ten minutes for a day or two. The most annoying moment was when I had a puzzle picture. Three or four times, I had it to within a couple of squares of completion and bam! Whole computer closed down. That reset the sliding puzzle. *sigh* It's a good job that I enjoy doing those. -.- On the bright side, I got to play with meerkats! This is the first time that I'd summoned them and they were so cute. Meerkats! My first clue was down Lumbridge Swamp caverns. I had my light source, but I was a little worried because my meerkats didn't. Tanyakins assured me that they'd be fine. I'd also forgotten my slayer helm, so a cave monster attempted to eat my head. It failed. From the swamp, I had an arrow clue. From Al-Kharid, it was pointing due north-east. I looked on the map and saw Morytania Swamp up in that direction. I ectophailed over to the temple and the arrow was in the opposite direction. It had to be the middle of the swamp. I ran, diagonally, all the way across it, losing a couple of sharks to ghasts en route. Then I reached the ocean. Ah. >.> It turned out to be the Mage Arena, where I should have been digging. I forgot about the meerkats, so ended up fighting a Guthix mage. Fail! But the next clue was in precisely the same spot again. Win! From the Mage Arena, I was on a massive trail across Gielinor, until I eventually found the spot over by the Lighthouse. This was a Celtic knot puzzle, which took a bit of time and had me cursing my ancestors for inventing Celtic knots in the first place. The next was over on White Wolf Mountain. It involved finding a route onto a hillock covered in ice giants. I could see ladders, but no access to them. A bit of exploring later, I found the dungeon entrance from the Heroes quest. Fortunately, I still had my pickaxe on me, that I'd had in Meiyerditch, so I burrowed my way through and found the correct ladder on the second attempt. This was a sliding picture puzzle, which was done very quickly. My 8th clue turned out to be on a patch of land between Sinclair Manor and the river. It took me forever to find it. This resulted in the infamous sliding puzzle, where my computer kept shutting down. I eventually completed it and was sent to the Wild. I tried Edgeville first to find my direction. It seemed to be pointing towards Daemonheim, so I teleported there next. As soon as I arrived, I heard my name called out. Half of Sal's were there! :o I meandered over to find out what was happening, only to have Silverwhite use quick chat to inform me that his Dungeoneering was 98. As most other people were emoting away, I deduced that he was about to get 99. Yay! fortuitous meetings ftw! What makes this even better is that it appears that Silverwhite lost his own screenie of that. I don't know as anyone else took one. Silverwhite rushed into Canting to ask me to post mine on his achievement log. Mission completed! Back to my elite clue and the 10th was at the edge of the ocean, near to the green dragons. Fortunately, there were so many green dragon hunters there, that none of the dragons so much as looked at me wandering through them. I had to go south. I bounced around between Draynor, Al-Kharid, the digsite and up towards the sawmill, before finding myself leaping back over the ditch into the wild. I needn't have worried. I found the spot in level 2. :D Here, finally, was my casket! I rushed to Edgeville to unpack my bag, so that I'd have room to fit in all of my new dragon masks and 3rd Age stuff. With Canting poised to congratulate me on it, I tentatively tried to unlock the casket. Celtic knot puzzle! Noooo! This was a big one as well. It took a bit of time to get into it. Then, drum-roll, I had my reward! Woot! Yes...

    Season's Greetings And Clan Wars

Good morning! I'd like to wish the best of the season to all, however you celebrate it. My love and kisses all round to each and every one of you. Yes, that does mean you as well. Yes, you reading this. {{{{hugs}}}} *kiss* Stay beautiful. The Solstice is up and running here. I've just received an adoption certificate. I'm now the proud mother of a three-year-old chimpanzee named Bryan, who is being looked after at Monkey World. I don't get to bring Bryan home (he's much better off with his chimpanzee adoptive mother, Sally), but I do get a free pass to visit him whenever I like. I've also had a big bottle of Loaphraig; some underwear; and a cardigan. We're just getting the house ready for the arrival, in a couple of hours, of the rest of the family, including Daz Rhyfelwr and Jdeh Rhyfela. Much love from them too, I'm sure. LOL As for the Runescape festivities, I'm looking forward to the Canting Away versus Sal's Realm of Runescape Clan Wars fight tomorrow; plus the 24 hour party that is the Canting Away Winter Solstice Festival, which starts at midnight tomorrow night. Naturally, all of Sal's (and everyone else) is invited to that too. Talking of the former, Warlock (Josh) and Lunar have met for Canting and Sal's, respectively, to iron out the details of our Boxing Day Clan Wars clash. This is what was agreed: When is it? December 26 (day before the Canting Festival) What time? 9:00pm GMT Which world? 141 Clan Wars classic arena What mode is that? F2P Rules? Food, prayer, all styles, no returns, corrupts, all styles and gravite are allowed. WTH is Canting? Merch Gwyar's cc. Who can come? EVERYONE! And bring your friends. And their clans. And their clan-member's friends. For more details, strategies, speeches and motivational posters/music, please visit this blog entry. It is getting updated as we have more to add. The latest update being a very comprehensive guide, on how to crush Sal's, as sent to me by Grief. All I need now is for someone to explain the rules and what 'classic' arena means. Do we lose stuff when we die? *kisses all round* Less than three.
  13. Please click the banner for more details. In the meantime, here are the pictures from the Canting Away v Sal's Realm of Runescape slaughter. Did we really just beat them 5-0? Who saw that one coming? :(
  14. I've emerged back into the real world with so much grime and encrusted mud that it was difficult to spot the bruises, ropeburns and sunburns underneath it all. I'm now clean and a very funny colour... well, colours, there's stripes. Yes, I've been at the Glastonbury Festival. Much fun was had! There was only one day of real mud, but for veterans like our gang that wasn't mud. 2005, 2006 and definitely 2007 was mud. This was just a bit of bouncy, liquidated earth. For most of the days though, I was running around in a bikini top and a floaty skirt, bare-foot and trying to stop the velcro snapping on the waist-held bag. I bumped into Amy Winehouse having a cup of tea in Shangri-La, but she didn't punch me. I had my face painted while watching Goldfrapp. Emily was told just to draw whatever the muse directed, so she came up with a little, green, shimmering pixie - apparently that's how she sees me. I'd loitered on the edges of Sinead O'Connor, unable to hear a thing, until a complete stranger turned to me and said, 'Shall we go in?' I nodded and she took my hand and led me right to the front. So much win. This was the second time complete strangers had done something like that. The first was the night before, when the Levellers attracted a crowd so vast that it had shades of Hillsborough threatening in undercurrents throughout the Leftfield. I nearly went down under the press of people, until a crustie girl grabbed my hand and held me until I could use one of the rope marquee ties to lash myself by my wrist to a post. I managed to see three headlining acts on the same night (Friday), in an epic hike across half of the 9 mile squared site. I saw three or four Kings of Leon songs, before tramping off through mud and darkness to the Other Stage. Panic at the Disco were there and I had to see them, because I'd had someone tell me I'm emo. Naturally, I had to find out what emo was. Surveying the crowd, it turned out to be a tamer version of Goth, with shades of Indie, and a propensity to use your fingers to play with your mouth. Guilty as charged on the latter. Actually on some of the former ones too. I enjoyed a tune which I think was called 'Irate Sins and Tragedies', then had a Glastonbury first - I punched someone. Nearly a decade of Glastonburys full of peace and love, running around like some feral hippie and I crown it all with punching someone. To be fair, he was twice the size of me and this was his third attempt at wrestling me to the ground and groping my breasts. Those back at our tent seemed more amazed that it was an EMO teenager who had behaved like that than any other facet of the story. From Panic at the Disco, I climbed the hill to see Pete Doherty and it was all good. Mostly though, the theme of the whole week was sunshine and beautiful people. I'm now back, having slept for 12 hours and still feeling like I could sleep some more. How is everyone?

    The Future For Canting Away?

Tools for Clans: Yes, I am practically clawing the monitor in want and coveting! There is also a forum for ideas to pass onto the developers. There are loads of pages, full of said ideas, which would add up to a very useful addition to the game. These things could also spell out some things that we could do differently for Canting, if they all came into being. Therefore I wanted to ask you to comment with your thoughts on Canting as is; and your wishlist for things that could be different. The sky is the limit, because we don't yet know what we're getting. I just want to be in the position, when we do know, to have all of your thoughts and wishes at the forefront of my mind. One thing that I have been musing upon is what will happen if you can only nominate one other person to have full 'owner' abilities. For example, at the moment, only I can add a name to the ignore list; only I can set ranks; only I can change Canting's name; and only I can delete Canting outright. Who else might you trust with that power? To be honest, there are some generals whom I'd trust more than I trust myself (after all, it wasn't them who disappeared for a year and left Canting without any protection at all). If/when it comes to that, do we have a vote? Or do I appoint out of the 3 or so names that I have floating around my head as major contenders? A vote might be problematic, if we have it on Sal's, as not all Canting are Slammers. But it might be able to be done via the Canting website. I'm also looking with interest at that clan list v friends list. I'm thinking that the sensible thing would be to keep only those who never come into Canting on my friends list. While putting all Canting onto their own list. However, I'd be loathe to do that, if it will affect trade limits. However the relaxing of those limits will stop that being an issue. But what if a future development does rely on my list again? *sigh* Decisions and dilemmas. :P I would also love a history list, so that I could see which general kicked whom. That would solve issues like we've had recently with Darkmage. He's been randomly kicked three times and we don't know who by. Obviously that general will lose their gold star, when we do know. For the record, generals may only kick if due warning has been given. Once privately, once publicly, then kick away. The only exception is if it's a real emergency. Someone autotyping spam would get kicked first and warned later. So what's in everyone else's minds as to things that you'd love to see in and around Canting, in an ideal world?

    Canting Away V Salmoneus's Army!

Yes, you did hear that correctly. The several hundreds of thousands of Sal's members versus Canting Away. Stop looking at me like that. *bites lip* :) FAQ Do the Slammers know about this? Yes, they do. Who's damn fool idea was this?! Sort of mine and Ali's (Easl). Are you utterly insane, woman?!!!!111!!! *nods slowly* Is this even win-able? Warlock said, yes it is. But Warlock is a lunatic beserker, who goes to Corp for fun. Good at fighting. *nod nod* And what did everyone say? They kind of laughed. Then realised I was serious. Then discussed logistics. What were those logistics? Idk. They went over my head. Rune skimmies were mentioned. And gravite. Granite. Grannies. ;) I'll add them to this when I know what we're being advised to bring. When is it? December 26 (day before the Canting Festival) What time? 9:00 P.m. Gmt Which world? 141 Clan Wars classic arena What mode is that? F2P Rules? Food, Prayer, All styles, No returns, Corrupts, all styles and Gravite are allowed. zOMG! Will I lose meh st00f when if I die? No. Cossack said we don't lose our stuff. WTH is Canting? Merch Gwyar's cc. Who can come? EVERYONE! And bring your friends. And their clans. And their clan-member's friends. :( Full Terms! Josh said: I've been discussing the war with Lunar & Grief. We've decided (as long as you're okay with it) so far; - Canting will have a Team-39 cape (green, sold by Simon at the Chaos temple in lvl 16 wildy) and Sals will have a Team-46 Cape (red, sold by guy in Edgeville). - The war will be at 9:30pm GMT on 26th December 2010. We will meet at 9:00pm GMT and then start the battle at 9:30pm GMT. - The arena will be the Classic clan wars arena, all multi-combat except for a few squares around the entrance portals. - Returning after death will not be allowed. - Any items (including Gravite, Corrupt Dragon, etc.) will be allowed, all combat styles (Magic, Ranged and Melee) will also be allowed. - The war will be held on a F2P world. News! Runewise declares for Canting! ;) Motivational Items! Strategy! Short version: Coss said: Your best gear would be dragon corrupt sq/helm/plateskirt/rune body/rune scimmy/power ammy/exploreres ring/runegaunts (or leather vambs)/normal boots/ team-39cape. Your inv should be 1str pot (4)/around 8swordfish/the rest anchovy pizzas Grief said: Pretty much what Coss said, but there's a small area thats single combat. At the start of the match we'll all follow Josh/me/Coss and make our way to the middle. The binders will then choose a target and call his name in the cc/out loud, at that point we all attack and brutaly slaughter the person called. The key will be to stay organized and calm (Merchy..<.<). Long version: This has been sent to me by Grief, who asked me to share it with you all. Thank you! * Thank you, Miyamashi, for the Liz 1 picture; and Josh for the recruitment poster. Plus Whiskas for the inspirational music. ;)

Three (and A Half) Days To Go!

The Canting Away Winter Solstice Festival is due to kick off at midnight, Boxing Day. That's really close! *happy dances* So far, we have 20 hours of events planned, with just four three slots not reserved as yet. They are 5am, 7am, 8am and 9am GMT. Any takers? The Sal's Realm of Runescape Christmas Party is also happening later than usual this year, on Boxing Day itself! :) This could well mean two whole days of non-stop partying, for those, like me, who are members of both. I did notice a comment in the ideas for their party, which made me go O.O The discussion was about an expedition to Clan Wars. Someone suggested that, instead of Slammers v Slammers, they found the top PKing clan for w141. Then came Ali's suggestion: Why not Sals v Canting? Ok. Ok. *panic emote* Ok. Canters! Start doing press-ups NOW! Get onto those agility courses! If the Demon Sergeant random event happens, refuse to leave until you've done a good work out! Grief! Organise your PKing troops! Kayla, Warlock, Zach, all the red combat level dudes... idk... HELP! I'm sure we'll be fine. :(

    Oh My Freaking Guthix!

Return of the Old Wildy and Free Trade? Register your vote by the 14th of January 2011 Please register your vote if you want to see the return of free trade and the danger of the original wildy. 100,000 votes certainly won't be enough. Perhaps not even 1,000,000. It will take you and every one of your friends, ex-friends and probably even enemies to register sufficient votes to bring it back. Simply put in your character name and if you want to stay anonymous just tick the box. Make your voice heard and your vote count! The Wildy is dead, and long may it stay so! Can't stand the thought of a return to the days of free trade, the original wildy or the problems associated with it, make sure you get everyone who feels the same way to boycott this vote. If the majority of players don't vote in favour Jagex won't bring it back. Will the silence be deafening? -------------------------------------------------------- This is just me ensuring that you all know about this.
  20. It's that time of year again! The Canting Away Winter Solstice Festival is launched! For the last three years, we have gone for the weekend before December 21st/25th. However, many people are rushing around like mad things preparing for their RL celebrations. This year, we've decided to try out having our event afterwards. December 27th is a Monday. I'm certain that all of those in education will be on their holidays around then. For the British adults, this will be a Bank Holiday. I'm hoping that that holds true for other countries too, though I'm aware that it might be dodgy for those whose religious holidays don't follow the old Celtic calendars. There was a wide cross-section of people in Canting when we came up with it. The British, Americans and Africans present were all fine with December 27th. So hopefully everyone else will be too! Here's how it happened last year: The programme is below. Please start reserving your slots in the comments here. If you have an event that will go over an hour (Godwars trips are the usual culprits there, as it takes ages to herd the party into going, when the majority have no idea what to pack or wear), then please reserve two hours, rather than one. (I'm personally hoping that someone takes us to the Great Orb Project. I liked it there last time!) This entry will remain the definitive programme of the day, however I'm likely to be asleep during the early part of it. If I'm not around, then any urgent messages or programme changes will be announced on Zach's blog. Alternatively, just come into Canting Away (Runescape chat channel, user name: Merch Gwyar) and ask. Someone will shout up where we all are. :) Click here for a World Clock Time Converter. The Programme! Unless otherwise stated: F2p World: 25 P2p World: 77 December 27th 2010 (all times in GMT; other timezones added as people work them out and let me know :P): Non-time specific events: * None listed yet. 00.00: F2P: Launch! Arcturus is leading the parade. Meet up in Lumbridge cowfield (go right in, through the gate and up to the north of the field). We'll have a parade all over F2Pland, before finishing by the River Lum by Edgeville. There will be a special guest joining us here. (US Central Time: 18:00 (26th); US ES Time: 19:00 (26th)) 01.00: F2P: Luos Rebbur Memorial Event. In honour of our friend and fellow Canter, Luos Rebbur, who passed IRL, we will be dedicating this hour. Everyone will spend most of it engaged in Luos's favourite skills of fishing and woodcutting. Kayla says, "I think we should all stay together starting out at the crawfish lake moving to barb village and then back to the river lum just like kieryn did when she was learning about fishing." Sounds like a plan! After three-quarters of an hour, we will take our catches and logpiles to the World 102 Falador Party Room. We'll be sure to let the party room know that this is for Luos Rebbur. (US Central Time: 19:00 (26th); US ES Time: 20:00 (26th)) MERCH'S GONE TO BED. PLEASE SEE ZACH'S BLOG FOR URGENT MESSAGES; OR LOG INTO CANTING; OR ASSUME THAT THE PROGRAMME IS RUNNING AS PLANNED. (US Central Time: 21:00 (26th); US ES Time: 22:00 (26th)) 04.00: FTP and PTP: Hide and Seek with Armmadylo. Christmas time usually means staying up till the early hours playing Monopoly, Scrabble and the like, so it won't be a hassle for me. :) I'm thinking we can do a hide and seek event, similar to Fred's last year. The first half an hour will be F2P, the second half P2P. I'll give clues via the clan chat, and rewards will be given to the first person to trade me at my location. Sound good? (US Central Time: 22:00 (26th); US ES Time: 23:00 (26th)) 05.00: As above - two hour event. (US Central Time: 23:00 (26th); US ES Time: 24:00 (26th)) 06.00: F2P: Scavenger Hunt with Lillantra!
