    Isaac

I, Divine isaac, admit to being rude to fellow canting members, being innapropriate, racist and apparentally bashing religion. I wish to apologise to all who were upset by the behavior, and that racisim, homophobia, and religious bashing ar bad. i also wish to include that none of the spammer were me, as i under stadn that a ban, is a ban, i do not go back fro revenge. Sincirely, Isaac. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi all, The above is a PM, written to me by ODST Isaac (now Divine Isaac), with the express purpose of being published here in this blog. It follows a week's worth of PMs between us and pretty much acts as the summary of those conversations. As of right now, Divine Isaac's (ODST Isaac) ban is lifted. I've taken him off my ignore list, so he is free to enter Canting. I ask the generals to no longer kick him on sight and I ask everyone to welcome him back. He has served his week ban for racist and homophobic language. The permanent ban came for spamming. Isaac has repeatedly stated that he has not spammed the cc, under different pseudonyms, at all. Therefore, he has been punished for a rule-breaking that he did not commit. He is still on his final warning though. There are not infinite ban repeals here. He successfully appealed his ban and therefore he's back. I hope not to receive the next screenshot, but if I do, then that will be a permanent ban. For those of you who are peeved by this decision, consider this - would YOU like to have been in a PM conversation with ME all week accused of racism, homophobia and lack of tolerance for other people's religions? That's exactly what he's just had to do. What I am hoping that we're seeing here is one young man at the conclusion of a learning curve. He's recognised what went wrong. He's highlighted the correct way to act. So let's see what he does with all this soul-seeking. Welcome back to Canting, Divine Isaac. yours Merch Gwyar (PS Apologies for any typos etc I'm typing with a killer headache.)

    Friends

Responding to Lee M16's newest entry Is it unusual to not actually rely on your friends to any degree worth mentioning? I love having friends and I love spending time with them, but whenever I need something, if at all possible, I generally just take care of it myself, or get someone in my family to help me. I rarely go to my friends or rely on them for anything when I need something. I get it done myself. It's not that I distrust my friends, but from my experience friends can't be counted upon to always be there at the very moment when you need them. They're away so often, or they have work, or something else has come up. It's not that they're never there, it's that they're so often not. Is there anything wrong with this attitude? It seems so selfish and introverted to view friends as something temporary, rather than something permanent. Maybe this is why I haven't had a best friend for any period of time worth mentioning - because I expect everyone to simply move in and out of my life. Not everything is a revolving door...

    Canting Away Announcement

Krazy Karl5 has asked me to highlight the Canting Away Awards going on over on the Canting forum. :) On a darker note, I've just banned someone from Canting. There aren't many rules in Canting. I dislike people sharing personal, IRL information, but there are only two kicking offences: Anyone doing the above will be removed by myself or a general. An hour later, they can creep back in and, if they've calmed down, then all is well. Life goes on. However, someone repeatedly behaving in such a manner will be dealt with. This individual apparently waited until I left the chat channel, then frequently littered the place with racist and homophobic language. He was often being warned by the generals and/or kicked out. What he was possibly unaware about was that various members of Canting were PMing me with screenshots. I had a quiet word with him. He agreed to stop acting like this. One morning, about a month ago, I logged onto Sal's to find no less than 8 PMs, off different people, all complaining of his disruptive and offensive behaviour in Canting. I had a second word with him. I told him that one more offence and he'd be banned for a week. He was utterly contrite. We chatted for ages and I believed that he'd settled down now. Moreover I thought that he'd fully understood that racism and homophobia is unacceptable in Canting Away. (Well, unacceptable anywhere, in my humble opinion; but enforceably unacceptable in Canting.) Last Monday, I logged onto Sal's to find several PMs, all with screenshots. I sought him out in-game and he was informed that he was to be banned for a week. He was promptly added to my ignore list. I can't do that with him on my friends list too, so he lost his silver star. I handed that to Cossack, who'd previously given up his star to allow a friend to be ranked. Selfless Cossack on the one hand versus repeat offender racist and homophobe on the other. No contest really, is there? Last night, it was almost time to reinstate our errant Canter into the cc. In fact, I was just going to finish my smithing stash of gold ore and then go and do it. He'd actually have been in about an hour early, but I was getting tired. An hour was neither here nor there. Suddenly he's back with a new account, autotype spamming the cc with 'ODST ownz ur mom merch. Bannedme.' Other than the terrible grammar and punction (and the fact that my Mum would kick his butt), it was saddening, because now I had no reason to take him off my ignore list. I was in Skype at the time, with two other generals. MFI quickly said, "Can I kick?" I replied, '"Yes." While he did that, I added the new account to my ignore list too. The really disheartening thing here is that this is the first ever permanent ban for a member of Canting Away. I've only given out one week long ban prior to this. That person returned the instant that I PMed him to say that the ban was lifted. He was welcomed with open arms and is still a beloved member of our clan today. He's never been a problem since. Now this. Maybe one day, I will receive a PM with an apology and evidence of an improved outlook on life. Maybe then, I'll publish that PM and make a decision based on the collective will of Canting members. Until then, this person will remain permanently banned from Canting. :)

    Warning! Re Treasure Trail Items!

Just a warning that if you currently have any of the heraldic helms or shields in your treasure trail box (in your POH), DO NOT OPEN THE BOX! If you do, you will end up with the helm or shield being returned to you. You will not be able to put them back in. The reason is that they are now part of a whole outfit. You can't add the item until you have the full outfit. In short, I've just had 30 places in my bank taken up by TT helms and shields, as I haven't yet got the other pieces for it. *sigh* Well, I have 20 taken up. The other 10 went into my inventory, because I didn't have the bank space for them. This means that my bank is completely full. Oh crap. This only happened when I opened my tt box in my POH. I was curious what new items I needed to buy. Until I opened it, I didn't have them returned. Edit: Thanks to some good friends, I now have wriggle room. Half of Canting offered to hold stuff for me. I -.- you all so much! Zach and Kayla were right next to me though and they've taken about a third each. I now have an empty bag and 9 spaces in my bank. I'll concentrate on buying the platebodies and plateskirts/legs. Thanks all! Edit 2: I've just nipped on before bed to see if anything has bought. It hadn't. But I've just realised what a freaking noob I was earlier. I basically just gave away 900k. :D What happened was that I was rushing. I had to meet someone IRL at 9pm, but it was already several minutes past. There was a lot of noise in Edgeville Bank, but I was also trying to have a conversation with Pie and have a transaction with her. Krazy Karl was trying to get my attention in Canting. I was also stressed from the whole helm and shield fiasco. I was very aware of someone yelling out that she was selling a plateskirt, which I needed. I called back that I wanted it. Pie hadn't accepted, but that's because she was trying to talk to me, but the rush of conversation had pushed it up. She repeated herself and I got it the second time. The girl was still calling, even though I'd told her to hang on. I kept looking at the clock. The first rule of any merchanting transaction in Runescape is to pay attention. I wasn't paying attention. She had a plateskirt. I wanted a plateskirt. I was late. The place was busy. I was stressed. It was just, 'how much?' 'Yes' 'Gimme'. I should have got the clue from how she followed me around asking me why I'd bought it. I should have got the clue from how she needed junk to make the transaction. I was just wanting to get away and meet Karl; get free Construction xp, then log off. The plateskirt was worth 100k. I paid 1m for it. They're brand new, so I hadn't got the proper price logged in my head. I didn't even glance at the trade screen. I saw I had a plateskirt. I saw that the money balanced. I pressed accept. I've now got 900k worth of addy arrows (p++) and a 100k plateskirt. Those arrows are taking up a space in my bank, which I've just had to give stuff into safekeeping in order to create. I feel like such a noob at the moment.
  6. Firstly, many thanks to Fred! Remember in part 3 how I bemoaned the fact that I'd accidentally pasted over my image of the Fashion Show winners? Fred was standing behind us at the time and took a picture for himself! Woot! Here they are then: Tanyakins and Lucas 2am, winners of the Fashion Show, either side of me Did I make a good choice? 20:00, World 92, Waste God's Giant Mole Expedition After the marathon and fashion show, Cossack led the whole train of us in procession up to Falador. It was fun weaving and winding our way past the Barbarian Village and out into the countryside. Did me good to get a spot of fresh air as well, after being stuck in Varrock town centre. Unfortunately, IRL I was flagging a bit. As we said goodbye to our F2P comrades, and the P2P people tooled up for some serious talpidae terrorising, I called out to Waste God that I'd catch them up. I needed caffeine! The cuppa was just the trick, so I logged back on and pulled on my armour. Trying to get down a molehill without a light source was an epic failure, so I had to jog back to the bank. Down below, the event was in full swing. A huge group of people were hunting the mole, which survived longer than the KBD only by constantly burrowing away from us. However, coffee or no coffee, I was still feeling the need for a break. I got around this by attaching myself to various people and having them taxi me around. :P It was fun down there, especially as a passenger. ;) I got a couple of paws and skins, as well as some miscellaneous lower levelled swords, which I later gave away in F2P. 20:00, World 92, Hide and Seek with Zach This event was very similar to Fred's, right at the beginning of the day, but that was fine. There are different cohorts of people out of bed at different times. Besides, they are great fun to participate in. Unfortunately, I wrote up Fred's within hours of it happening, but we're now days away from Zach's, so I've forgotten every clue in the order that they happened. I do recall one clue which had me convinced that it was Varrock town centre. I was in the Kharid desert at the time, so I hurtled on up there. I passed Full of Pie, so decided to cheat by hanging onto her coat-tails. The next clue was something about a church. I detached myself from Pie and hurtled across the cobbles of Varrock. I ran into sLinux, evidently wth the same idea, and we slid into Varrock Church at around the same time. Unfortunately, Zach was already awarding the prize, over in East Ardougne Church, to the person who'd correctly followed his reasoning. Another time, I smugly clambered up the slopes of Eagle's Peak with a rope in my hand. I lassooed various eagles and flew to their lair, convinced that Zach was hiding in one of them. The next clue came and I realised my error! With a bag full of teleport jewellery, items and runes, I was soon over by Barbarian Outpost. There Gonzyy had also worked it out. We both collided en route to the stones, where I successfully pushed him into the ocean and made it to the top of the lighthouse to claim my prize. Hurrah! I also remember trapsing around the Kharidian Desert, in the blazing heat, wondering where Zach was. I'd just made up my mind that it was the Bedouin Camp, when another clue came. I forged on, sweat pouring, until I reached the Agility Pyramid. Red-hot stones and booby traps made that an arduous climb, but I made it... second. Oh well! Unfortunately, I can't bring to mind the other clues and their destinations now. Does anyone want to jog my memory? 22:00, World 77, my House Party Second repeat event of the day was my house party, but again, it was with a different group of Canters. All those in bed the first time around where out in force now. This was made even more special by the fact that it was also going out live in a radio show! Aximili EI was wandering around the rooms, describing what he saw, live on Blogtalk Radio. You can hear its archived version by clicking that link. Meanwhile, the radio show had a chat channel attached. The transcript from that can be found in Aximili's blog. The result was a lot of chaotic fun! As the crowds dispersed around my house, I was being inundated by PMs, while trying to follow in-game chat, chat in Canting, chat in the blog radio channel, as well as listening to the radio show itself. I also took a screenshot, while filming a few seconds worth of footage. Multi-task much? I didn't have time to be tired here! Unfortunately, unless you are on my friends list, then I can't reply to your PMs. This is a complete git, especially when good friends like Jaxana and Jammy Slayer are trying to talk to me. While they should be on my friends list, I have no room to add either of them. :D Thanks again to those of Canting, particularly Rachy, who act as my de facto PA at times like this. I did randomly bump into Jammy the next day, so we caught up anyway. Mostly we discussed the fact that Rachy is our mutual friend, but we hadn't realised this, until she intervened on my PM! :D I really wanted to call into Aximili's show. He always works better with someone to bounce conversation off. However, I know from past experience that Runescape and Skype hate each other on my computer. While I'd been using it in previous events, I'd occasionally been disconnected from both. It hadn't been that serious until Stealing Creation, when I got thrown out of a game. If it happened during the house party, it would be a bit more serious. It would evict everyone from my house for a start. Nevertheless, I was young and foolish at the time. >.> I held off for about half an hour, then decided to risk it. I logged into Skype, connected to the show, got as far as ringing the station and BAM! Out of Runescape, out of the call, me sitting there facepalming. I was soon back into Runescape, apologising profusely to my guests. They streamed back into the party and resumed it without much encouragement needed. :P Shortly on, Krazy Karl did call into the show, which was great! Thanks Aximili and Karl for an entertaining radio show. Apologies again to everyone who was forcefully thrown out of my house by me attempting to join in verbally. I do enjoy having everyone around for a house party, but there's often little I can do in the way of joining in. The necessity of having my private chat switched on means that I'm answering PMs; while the dual chat channel meant that I was also busily typing away there. Just as that dies down, the party is generally nearly over. -.- But thanks everyone for coming. I did enjoy seeing you all hanging out. 23:00, World 92, Fist of Guthix I have to say that I was dubious about Krazy Karl's 3rd event. PKing is really not my thing. However, I showed willing. I also rejoined the Skype conversation, on the basis that it didn't matter so much about me DCing here. I did so a couple of times, but it was no great problem. The Canting gang initially went onto an empty world, but it wouldn't allow us to play a game. We jumped to an official world and now we were in. I had to go in, look to see who I was hunting, kill that dude; then switch to being the hunted, whereupon I'd grab a rock and try not to be killed, whilst standing in a glowing spot. All whilst surrounded by the most psychopathic element of Gielinor. Ok. But would my opponent mind me killing him/her? As it was, I really got into it! I was soon roaring in there, brandishing my whip and wooting when I PKed the other person. They were all laughing at me in Skype over it. Latent violent tendencies and all. I even felt mildly smug when I got a player called Mentor. Krazy Karl had already had him and warned me that he was 'tricky'. I rushed in there and killed the man. Tricky? *insert evil laughter* Then I got EdgetheViper. He's only level 51! I was being hunted first and he found me quickly. His mage shots were just bouncing off me, while my stone was being super-charged right up into the 1000s. He didn't manage to make much of a dent, before half-time arrived. Then I was after him. I found EdgetheViper and he ran away. I gave chase. This went on for ages. Then we rested either side of a building. It wasn't that I couldn't get a shot onto him, but I felt bad doing so. I'm level 119 and he's only 51! That's surely unequal enough to be wrong. The likes of Gonzyy and Krazy Karl were listening to me over Skype. Krazy Karl eventually commented, wryly, "I hope I get Merch next round. I'll just beg her not to kill me and she'll leave me alone." I countered, "But I'm not one of life's natural PKers!" EdgetheViper wasn't begging. In fact, eventually he stepped out from behind the wall and said, "Just come on, kill me, dude. I'm bored. I love running." I laughed so much, I cried. Then the others pointed out that he was actually getting charges from those lamp-post thingies in the game. I gasped and ran after EdgetheViper. I took him down with a couple of flails of my whip. He had managed to get over 500 points, while I was feeling sorry for him! :o 24.00, World 25, The Close-Down Event I was so tired by now. I was seriously flagging; my head felt thick and muggy, from concentrating on Rs and wearing headphones all day; I was out of ideas of how to close this party down. I'd already cried off the last 10 mins of Fist of Guthix, so I could refuel on coffee IRL. All in all, I could have kissed Kayla's feet, when she appeared in Lumbridge (where Solarspot and I were patiently waiting for FOG to finish) and offered to run this event. Kaylaalyak = :D It was all good now. As the others downed weapons at FOG and made their way too us, I spotted Msclick sitting on the grass, watching. With various people dancing, I ran out of the crowd and attached myself to her. She was in this party too! The billing had called for dancing around Lumbridge fountain and parades around the town. We began the former with aplomb. Kayla led the way, with Full of Pie, Solarspot, Msclick, myself and everyone coming from far and wide to join in. The train grew so long that we could no longer circle the fountain, without curling in and around ourselves. Kayla took us for an extended tour of Lumbridge, weaving us through each other in a serpentine twist. It was great! It was especially great because I just had to make sure that I was attached to Msclick, then sit back and just watch. The parade went on for a full hour. We covered every town and street in F2P. We collected wheat from a field, then wheat bombed the party room floor in Fally (not in the chest, but around it). We lined up and synchronised dances in front of the dancing knights, our numbers touching from wall to wall. These processions might not sound like much in the telling, but in the actuality, they are amazing. How often do you just walk through Gielinor? How often can you do that without worrying about destination nor even having to click the map? Such things allow us to take in the sights and sounds. They free our hands for calling out greetings to those whom we pass along the way. The mood is infectiously light; the conversation cheery; the spectacle amazing. Parades are ftw, in my humble opinion. Eventually, our travels brought us to Port Sarim, where Kayla called for people to trade her for boat fare. I had money on me, so I just took the ferry across to Karamja. We all congregated at Musa Point, charging like mad things through the cool shade of the banana plantation. Someone had brought beer, or was buying it from the bar beside the beach; while everyone was stripping the trees of their fruit. We ate and drank on the pathway, shouting out cheers and toasts to each other - good friends and companions and another brilliant festival day. That led into speeches, some of which made me blush, all of which warmed my heart. We drank to old friends and new friends. We drank to Canting Away and all who cant in her. I raised my pixel glass a dozen times and took a sip for auld lang syne. And there it was, the end of the festival. Part of me was sad, but the very physical, exhausted rest of me was glad to be logging off and going abed. Once I was up and about next day, then I wished it was going on again. Thanks again to everyone who organised events or helped in their actuality. Thanks to all who turned up (they would have been very sad events with no Canters running amok through them!). People are already talking about the Winter Solstice Festival... >.> Less than three.
  7. I arrived in Rs at half 9 to find a fair amount of people in Canting. I was regaled with tales of the Varrock firebombing; the fun had with Full of Pie's Brimhaven Agility Course event; then Xx3070 told me how great the two-hour Dungeoneering event had been. Kyo's God Wars event hadn't occurred, but when there's partying to be done, Canting has always been equal to the task. I don't think that anything happened between 7am and 10am, but that just gave people chance to catch up on RL or their individual RS lives. 10:00 - Noon, World 77, My House Party After a huge refurbishment of my dungeon, I was excited to open my house up today. It was quickly filled. It should have only been an hour party, but Karl overslept, so we used his slot too. It was all good, as there had been a spare slot in the afternoon anyway, which Karl grabbed as soon as he crawled out of bed. Meanwhile, we were all having it large in my house with no sign of the festivities abating. I was pleased to see that my dungeon was working out well. One of the loudest complaints about its previous incarnation was that it wasn't great for PKers. It is now. In fact, Boom spent much of those two hours killing anyone who ventured down there. Eventually Rawresome was summoned, in all his best armour, for a showdown with our tormentor. The fact that he died within seconds was neither here nor there! Rawresome then disappeared back to his bank for even better armour and weaponry, then the fight was a little more equal. I asked those visiting whether this was a better dungeon than before. It appeared to meet with universal approval. I also put it through its paces, trying to escape death by Boom, and I found it hard to escape. By fleeing, you only activate the creatures against you, so your pursuer has it even easier. Rachy arrived with news that, from the entrance portal of my house, she had spotted an evil elder tree. The party moved very swiftly out there. There was even a penguin wandering by; as well as a zombie impling. Inside the house again, Helm Larder and I discussed astronomy, whilst looking at the large orrery in my study. Calanon got inspired to go and get some more construction levels of his own. We discovered a glitch in the hangman game that made it impossible to guess any words (basically, it won't register any letters being asked). All round it was just a tremendous get together. I also learned that I can give level 91 Construction assistance, on the ancient effigies, as long as it's in my house with me drinking tea. I got 15k xp off Rawresome's! Cossack tried it with his level 93 needs, but I was just one level short. I'll get it in the week and help him out, if he hasn't already bumped into Teacuptime. 12.00 (Noon), World 25, Halfway Point Event The halfway point was marked with another meet up in F2P Lumbridge. We took over the cowfield again, this time with a picnic and an attempt at synchronised emotes. I took a bag full of cake, plus some money. I remember what it was like starting out, when every gp counts and 5k is a fortune. Everyone whom I saw under level 30 got 5k. Many of them joined in the festivities and even came into Canting, to be introduced and, possibly, become one of us. I remember Hacket and Skittles first of all. The latter got about two combat levels on the cows around us, while the party was underway! He was level 17, when we met. He was level 19, gorged on cake and the food that everyone else had brought, by the time we left! Hacket was congratulated on full mithril. Rawresome made a point of telling him how much of an achievement it was to have full mithril at level 30. I agreed. There was a downside to all of this though. There were a couple of people, one of whom was very insistent, who saw the money but not the party. I was stalked for much of the last part of the party, with one individual demanding cash. He'd already had 5k off me. Seeing as his trade limit appeared permenantly reduced, I believe that I wasn't the only person handing out goodies either. This all made it so that the event was the only one during the day that I was glad to be leaving. That was only a slight blip though. I thoroughly enjoyed the drop party of left over picnic food and cowhides (we'd all been buying them off cow killers); and synchronising emotes. We even managed it on the leaping for joy once! It was also delightful to look around and see everyone just chatting. Combat tips and money making tips abounded. It occurred to me that there possibly aren't too many occasions, when extremely low levels get the ear of extremely high levels for a prolonged period of time. There were some definitely making the most of it. I don't want to leave the impression that it was all one way either. Great conversation was happening all round; and there were some who wouldn't take 5k off me, unless they were giving me their bronze mid helm and some cow hides. (I checked, she was wearing a bronze full helm, so she wasn't bereft.) These were obviously all sort of returned, in the vast drop party at the end! 13:00, World 84, Krazy Karl's Kalphite Queen Trip I will admit to being as nervous as anything about this event. The KBD is well within my comfort zone, but his elder sister, the Kalphite Queen, is above it. I've been there perhaps two or three times properly in my life, though there were earlier suicide missions, when I was a little noob. None of my meetings have gone well. I've died there at least twice and escaped with my heart beating once. Still, Karl and Gonzyy were very relaxed about it. Their casual conversations helped cement my confidence in them. Things like, 'You got the rope, Gonzyy?' 'Yeah, np'. It just sounded like this was something that they did every week and we'd all be fine. I donned full black dhide, my shield-with-a-face-on, my whip, my dragon boots, my Helm of Neitiznot, my glory, my Barrows gloves, and, because we'd met before, my ring of life. I carried a rune crossbow and a quiver full of broad-bolts. My bag held range potions, prayer potions, a super-set, a rope and the rest were sharks. All told, I think our party was: Krazy Karl, Gonzyy, Cossack, Waste God, Rawresome, There, Helm Larder and myself. The first trip was a bit of a failure. I got poisoned en route, before we'd even see the KQ, and didn't have an anti-poison. Gonzyy had got one, so that was all good. However, there had been a hidden change, which meant that every person in the party had to have a rope to get in. The result was that There and I were down there, but with none of the others. Gonzyy nipped down to ensure that we were safe. I was getting battered by a guard of the KQ. The order came from Karl to teleport out and regroup. I started to panic a bit. I know what I'm like for such things and didn't want to risk upsetting the trip by forcing my panic attacks on them. However, as I debated things in the safety of Edgeville Bank, I saw Gonzyy rush by en route to the fairy ring. I made up my mind to stop being a wuss and took off after him. Once I was hurtling with him across the desert and back into the hive, I felt more settled. Round two was much smoother. We all had a rope this time and I also had an anti-poison. Of course, sod's law kicked in and I didn't need it. Karl instructed us all to pray protect from mage and down we went. I recalled the advice, from the days when Josh and Alex tried to entice me down there, that we should split up around her. I ran to the other side, then was amazed at how quickly she was dispatched! We killed her twice easily and nearly had her dead a third time, when I had to teleport out for fear of my life. That was only because I ran out of food. Had I taken Shelley, I'd have happily stayed put. The others finished her off, though all left but Gonzyy and There for the final slither of her life. Even There had to flee for the last hit, as he was down to 18lp, leaving Gonzyy alone to deliver the killing blow. Round three was also a lot of fun. This time, though, there were fewer of us. I only five of us descended for that one: Karl, Gonzyy, Cossack, Rawresome and myself. Again, I killed her twice (with the others), before having to flee before the third kill. Thank you all concerned for your confidence and professionalism. I would be happy now to go on future KQ expeditions, because that wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. I've proved to myself that I can survive down there (at least in a group of people!) and so no future panic attacks for that one. :D The other four were more prepared, with tortoises carrying supplies, than me, so they were still down there. Krazy Karl did try to persuade me back for round four, but time was getting on. I had a few minutes to grab a cuppa, before making my way to the next event, if I didn't go back. This I did. While I waited for a short time at the Runecrafting Guild, those still in the KQ lair got us good! Tanyakins and I were so taken in by their excitement that we both admitted to believing every word. Here's that conversation: I was actually planning the route back to the KQ, to cover Karl and Rawresome's return, when they let us know it was a joke. Gits! :D 14:00, World 25, Runecrafting Event This event had originally been reserved by Vandyballer, as being possibly to do with Runecrafting. However, he's playing less in Runescape these days, as he blogged about devoting himself to his RL religious duties. As a consequence, no-one had seen him around and there had been no further information about this event. I don't think anyone expected him to turn up for it (had there been a better offer, I might have let the slot go for the asking), and so a continguency plan had already been formed. We were going to try out the Great Orb Project. A huge crowd turned up for this one. It had been billed as an F2P event, but on the understanding that it would be P2P if no F2P people turned up. We were all about to hop into 77, when Solarspot logged on. He quickly assured us that that was fine, as he hasn't got level 50 runecrafting, but by now we were all in teams and couldn't be bothered to hop. :) Also, Helm Larder was quick to assume control. He knows this game backwards and thought that it might be easier to teach it to us in F2P. We stayed put in world 25. What followed was one of the highlights of my day! I've only been there once and that was to be shouted at by the team that I joined. Back then, I was instructed to stand by a pillar and not touch a thing, as I'd mess up their system. Partway round, I did try to attract an orb, because my inactivity bar was glowing orange. I was beset with screaming people demanding that I stop. I made it to the end of the run, but quietly left them to it. That was my only experience of the minigame until today. Helm Larder was very happy for us all to have a go! We're all bright students, so it wasn't long before we were running around playing it for ourselves. I had sooooo much fun! It's seriously made me want to go back and play more. We had three games. Our teams drew in the first one; our team lost the second; and we won the third. I banked nearly 1k tokens, with which I need to go back and see what I can buy. I do need all of the runecrafting outfits, so there's my top priority. But I really, really loved playing this. Thank you for stepping up to the plate, Helm; and thanks everyone for creating such enjoyably intense rounds! 15:00, World 25, Clan Wars We stayed in F2P for the next event - Clan Wars. While I had appealed for volunteer clans to fight Canting in a friendly, none had dared (or perhaps none had seen the request buried in the depths of a blog entry... I'm going with the former), not even the mighty Sal's Realm had come forward to take us on. So the crowd that turned up there were all Canters. We did have a good showing of F2P Canters too, so were fully justified in staying in world 25 this time. Some of the others did attempt to split us into two, with half going into Krazy Karl's cc, so to forge a decent fight. It never happened though. We ended up in a free-for-all, in the safe zone, which suited me just fine! What made this event extra special was Nihil-ist. He had arrived with just 168xp to go until a defence level. That level was 99. As we fought, he called over his old friend, Krazy Karl, and next thing you know, fireworks are filling the skies. Woot! Congratulations again, Nihil-ist! I'd been watching for it and had my message ready; but Nihil-ist hadn't even attempted to make a big deal of it. It had all been mentioned in whispered chats up in one corner, instead of a huge announcement in Canting. As a result, many people were caught off guard. They soon rallied though and coistered around. The space above our heads was alive with woots and congratulations. Go Nihil-ist! He's so laid back about it. If it had been me, I'd have rushed to grab my defence cape and been back to show it off. He simply brushed away all suggestion. He was having fun here and would go and get it later. Fair enough! Meanwhile, the free for all went on. Yrrah lured me right up into the depths of the space. I learned what proper PKing was then. He should have been dead ages ago, nearly red barred as he started running. He led me into some houses, then up ladders, across roofs and down into the mud. By the time he'd finished, I literally had no idea where he was, let along near enough to finish him off. So that's how it's done. Then he reappeared laughing and said, 'I give up, just finish it'. LOL I did and, of course, that left me miles away from anyone. I wandered off back across the distance, learning along the way that Clan Wars looks like areas of the Wild, but without the revs. The others replied that that was the point of the place. Oh. >.> I loved the little messages that informed you that you'd killed someone. There's that in the above picture re Fred. There was another shortly afterwards saying, 'Oh dear, Yrrah is dead! And it's all thanks to you!' O.O Sorry? I also enjoyed learning, 'good fight', in a variety of languages. 'Buena pelea' is Spanish; 'Ymladd da' is Welsh... add your own!

    When The Music's Over...

I'd like to thank everyone for another amazing 24 hour festival. Knackering as it is! Thank you for those who hosted events; the volunteers who helped to make them wonderful; or those who simply turned up and, by their presense, kept the party swinging, creating something epic of each new location. I've tried things that I've never done before. I've been places that I'd never ventured. Best of all, I've met people, pixel to pixel, who I'd never hung out with and that was great. :D The Canting Summer Festival 2010 is over. I'll do a proper write up about it tomorrow, because I'm wilting in my seat right now. For now, I'll just say, 'Wow! That was fun!' And crazy. And intense. And was there a square inch of Gielinor that from which we didn't eek out the last drop of entertainment? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkp8fNODegU
  9. I tried my best to attend as many events as I could; and I managed the vast majority of them! By the end of it, I was seriously wilting. Most people sensibly took breaks, but there were a few of us who really went for it (Krazy Karl and Gonzyy spring to mind). You'd be amazed how exhausting it is just sitting on a computer chair all day, playing non-stop Runescape! By the time of Waste God's mole expedition, I was flagging. Throughout Krazy Karl 5's Fist of Guthix trip, I could happily have taken a quick nap. Not because the event wasn't wonderful, but because my eyes were screaming, 'enough nub!' I was very grateful for Kayla taking charge of the closing event! I could just tag on and relax. All in all though, it was a wonderful day. Here is my report on all that happened. 0.00, World 25, Opening Event Though Kayla was organising this, I realised too late that she hadn't stated a meeting place. As this was late on Friday and Kayla was at work, I chose the Lumbridge cowfield. This is where we'd met up for some of the Winter Solstice events, so I figured people would be familiar with it. Upon Kayla's return, she said that this was just fine. It was a massive turn out! I noted the following: Chocobo1357, Cossack, Fred-037, Full of Pie, Gonzyy, Hubertos1, Kaylaalyak, Krazy Karl 5, myself (Merch Gwyar), Rafftank, Solarspot, Tanyakins, TheArcturus1, There, Vaskor, Yrrah and Zachman3334. Cancsis was in Canting, but not at the event. That was just for starters, as our presense soon attracted curious bystanders, who were welcomed into the party. We started with a mass meet up in the field. It was fun to watch how the delighted cries went up as each new person arrived. "Fred! Hello!", "Chocobo!!!" etc. As if we don't talk with each other every day in a chat channel. LOL But this felt different. It reallly did seem like we were hailing long-lost friends into the midst of our hearth; even if we had just spent five minutes in the cc directing them here. It all added to the celebratory atmosphere and I loved it. Kayla did try to organise us into spelling out CA, as we had at the Winter Festival, but it was like herding cats as usual. She gave up quickly and managed to fashion us into something far more impressive - a long, winding train. We curcuited the field a few times, picking up people along the way; then set out into the big, wide world. Undulating like a snake, we passed back and forth along the streets of Lumbridge, before heading up into Draynor. There we paused to strip farm a field of cabbages, though I was apparently too busy dancing with Krazy Karl to collect many! Reconvening into the train, we scampered out of the gates and did a tour of Falador, the Barbarian Village and Edgeville, before cabbage bombing the GE. Many more people joined us there, so it was a truly massive line that worked its way back down towards Lumbridge. Zach, Karl, myself and There had a moment, during it, to recreate the famous Beatles Abbey Road picture: Click here for the bigger version of that. Then we wound up in Bob's Axe Shop, where we were perfectly positioned to start the next event. I really enjoyed this opening event. It was a great atmosphere throughout. 01.00, World 25/77, Fred's Hide and Seek Fred hid, provided clues and we sought to find him. Those who succeeded ahead of everyone else got a cash prize. That was the basic concept, but what that doesn't tell you is just how much fun this was. I started off with a new friend from World 25. I am so sorry, I didn't make a note of your name. I met so many new people yesterday, as well, that it's totally gone. If you're reading, please do let me know your name and I'll edit it in. :D Anyway, me and him heard the clue about the palm tree and the beach and hurtled off across Lumbridge Swamp. In honesty, I was heading for the boat into Karamja, having discovered that my glory didn't work in F2P. We were trudging through bog, when my new companion piped up that he thought that Fred was in Mudskipper Point. I facepalmed. Of course he was. That description fit perfectly! We were going into the right direction anyway, so we carried on. As it happened, Krazy Karl reached the destination before Fred did! And so he claimed the prize. We jumped to P2P now, world 77, so I said goodbye to my companion and set out on my own. Fred's clue was about praying at an altar, so I teleported to the Digsite. Zach teleported straight next to me and we laughed aloud. 'Same idea then?' 'Yeah.' But there was no sign of Fred. The next clue was that this had been the infamous location of a scam. Zach and I both teleported out, then I laughed aloud IRL to find him, alongside several others, arriving in Falador Square beside me. After all, Fally is the scene of the most notorious scam of all time. However, it notably hasn't got a chapel. Zach and the others were already running, as was I, but I went in a different direction at the gate. I went to the monastery, remembering, after a couple of steps, that I had a combat bracelet. In the old days, the monastery had been used in luring scams, as there's a hidden bit of Wilderness there. The ditch soon ended that one, but its dark history remained in my head. Unfortunately, there was no Fred. I checked upstairs at the altar, then right up at the ditch However, the call had gone out. Zach had found Fred in the Zammy Temple, up by the goblin village. Oooohhhhh! The Zammy Wine scam... The next clue talked of needing a spade to get there. I briefly considered the mole-hill, but Fred had warned that there was a quest requirement for this location. It was obviously underground and so that sparked my thinking of the Underground Pass. I teleported to Lletya, then picked my way through the treacherous forest to the entrance of the pass. I'd only just entered it when the next clue came: 'I am underground, in a "safe" place.' My eyes widened! That fit well with the basement of the Toad and Chicken, in Burthorpe, with its safes to crack; but again no quest requirement. I had to be in the right place! There has been a graphical update down in the Underground Pass, since I was last there. It's even more spooky, with dramatic music and frightening blasts. I picked my way through the strands of balancing beams, until I made it to the safety of the ledge. I was right through into the pass proper, when the next clue came: 'Many people come here to kill me in hope a a good reward.' Did that refer to the Underground Pass at all? I couldn't think of anything, but then I'm not up on the hot places to train combat. I carried on. I was well into the very bowels of the pass, when the final clue arrived: 'I am surrounded by my 4 brothers tombs.' Everyone simultaneously got that it was Barrows, even though he self-admittedly got the numbers wrong (6 brothers, so he was surrounded by 5). There was no way I was going to get to the other side of Mort Myre in time. I decided to stay put, in case the next clue was the Underground Pass. It was Cossack who won that one, but only just, as he was quickly joined by half of Canting. It wasn't. However, I knew it immediately. 'It's cold around me but many dragons can heat up the place'. It had to be the frozen castle, in high level Wilderness, which is surrounded by dragons. I gloried out; banked everything but my green hat and a knife; then used the lever to get to the deserted keep. I rushed west across the top of the Wild; running into a rev by the agility course. I just kept on running. It must have got snagged on something, because it didn't follow me into the ice giants. I was at the great boulder, when the call came that Vaskor had found him. I carried on anyway and immediately saw their two dots inside the castle. I ran through, but wasn't shielded from the dragons, so arrived with half health. I'd also forgotten to switch auto-retaliate off, so I was dragged back out. I crawled back with 18hp left (that's 18, not 180). Both Fred and Vaskor tried to give me food, but when you're that battered, you might as well suicide. At least then I had a free trip back to civilisation! The last clue was immediately obvious and it was again high Wilderness: 'You may cross your path with chaos Element to reach my place.' I only had on my questcape and hat, alongside a games necklace, so it was safe to die. I ran from Soul Wars into the Wild, meeting Hubertos along the way. We travelled together from the level 13 zappy thing, up to level 50. Once there, the news came that Fred was inundated with finders. Hold on, Fred's blog says that Hubertos was the one to find him. Who did I travel up with then? LOL Was it There? Sir Nerdsy? (Bear in mind that it was knocking on 2am for me; I was bloody knackered!) I could have sworn it was Hubertos. Fred's next clue was, 'I'm sitting on a wooden bridge over some lava.' I knew it was the volcano. I just had to remember where the volcano was. I ran up behind the castle, but there was just rocks. I recalled the extra bit of Wild to the east. It was around that time that I saw the ork. I screamed out, but was reassured that it couldn't get me, as it was behind the fence. Wrong. It came through the fence. My companion and I raced onto the zappy thing, but he was being hit. I activated the pillar and he disappeared. But I did not. :) It wasn't that I was teleblocked. I was just not standing in the centre of it. :D I quickly tried to remedy the situation, but I was teleblocked now. It didn't take me long to die. By now, the call had gone up that Tanyakins was dead too. I assured everyone that I was fine, as I had no grave to bless. But Tanya had. I immediately set off back into the Wild to bless it. However, Vaskor had got there first and all was well. However, I had run into trouble. The level 50 zappy thing had no less than 5 revs on it, all orks and knights! I quickly teleported three of them away, as they'd strayed into the middle. The other two hadn't and they finished me off. Meanwhile, the rest of Canting were still in the Wild generally, or had specifically set out to provide a safe escort for Tanya, in collecting her things. There were several minutes where the cc was filled with warnings and reports of revs being fought and killed. Finally, everyone returned safely to Edgeville. It was all good. I was dead on my feet and really wanting my bed. Tripp-er hadn't turned up for his slot though. During these festivals, Zach takes over as chief communicator, keeping the flow of information happening, while I'm abed. He was standing right next to me, so we had a bit of a meeting. The upshot of it was Zach telling me not to fret, go to bed and he'd deal with whatever transpired during the next hour. All good! I believe that Canting continued to hang out in Edgeville, before going to fire-bomb Varrock. Apparently it was great fun!

    Canting Away Summer Festival

With the Canting Away Summer Festival happening this Saturday, I thought I'd reproduce the programme here. There are still several slots to fill, if we truly want to make this 24 hour (if not, look for spontaneous events or doing our own thing, with chat in Canting, on the day). There are also some slots where we're waiting for more details. Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Everyone is welcome on the day, so just turn up! ############################# We're looking at starting midnight GMT on July 30th and having events all day Saturday 31st July 2010. Finishing at midnight GMT then. I learned from the Winter event that some things run over. Therefore any big events, like God Wars trips, aren't going to happen in a single hour. For those wanting to see what to expect, here are videos of the Winter Festival. It will be like this, but more summer-y: If anyone takes any film footage on the day, please put it somewhere on-line and let Cxkslei know. He has kindly agreed to edit it all together into a video of the Summer Festival! This entry will remain the definitive programme of the day, however I'm likely to be asleep during the early part of it. If I'm not around, then any urgent messages or programme changes will be announced on Zach's blog. Alternatively, just come into Canting Away (Runescape chat channel, user name: Merch Gwyar) and ask. Someone will shout up where we all are. biggrin.gif So choose your slots and sign up now, if you wish to run an event. Click here for a World Clock Time Converter. (Sorry, the original clock was out. Runewise And Sal's

This is just a quick blog to wish a huge welcome to those coming to Sal's from Runewise. There are three sites that I frequent for all of my Runescape needs (other than Runescape itself, of course) and two of them have just become partners! Woot! I was in my usual, 'I might be out of bed and moving, it doesn't mean that I'm sentient' routine, first thing this morning, when I saw the news. I had to blink several times, but it was still there on the screen. Sal announcing, 'Runewise and Sal's Realm Are Now Partners!. I clicked over onto Runewise, where Vaskor had repeated the same tidings there, 'News - Runewise and Sal's are official partners now. Check new Runewise forum at Sal's! - 27/07/2010'. It made me happy. So a big, big to the denizens of Runewise, now filing through the gates into a mass of Slammers. :D

    Runefest - The Results

I have to say well played to Jagex on the Runefest front. There is a lot that's wrong with the solution, in particular the fact that all of the sensible people, who waited for more information before committing, have now been refused entry. However, the solution that they did come up with silenced all the anxieties that have been on the forums for weeks. I've been away for the weekend. Remember the friend whom I tracked down in my real life quest? I've been at his house. On Saturday, we travelled up the north-eastern side of The Wirral, nipping to West Kirby to glimpse my beautiful North Wales across the sea; before going to Birkenhead and through a tunnel, under the Mersey, into Liverpool. We explored the ancient and modern world at the National History Museum, listening to live Egyptian music that sounded suspiciously like Gaelic jigs. We meandered through the streets. We danced in the rain in Mathew Street; then sat back, watching the tourists with their expressions of sheer wonder, as they spotted the entrance to The Cavern. You could tell by the shining eyes and tears that some people had waited their whole lives to stand in that street and see that club sign. I felt privileged to have shared their moment, if only as a people-watching spectator. My friend and I then drove down the north side of the Mersey, crossing over it on the Widnes-Runcorn bridge, before getting horrifically lost trying to find a fabled vantage point from which to look back. It was all good. It always is the journey that's more important than the destination and I really enjoyed that journey. We eventually did find the viewpoint, up Frodsham Hill, which presented for us the land from Snowdon in the West to the M6 and the hills beyond in the East. To the North was a wonder. The entire Mersey, River Weaver and the Manchester Ship Canal were laid out at our feet. We could see the ferries and ships crossing it. The towns and cities, dotting their banks, stretched out for miles. Their lights twinkled, like a thousand million little bonfires. There were fireworks on the Lancashire horizon. It was while on that daytrip that I told my friend all about the Runefest fiasco. We concluded that Jagex would either change the venue or else practically give away the remaining tickets. He was there too, when I later wandered into an electrical store and started inspecting the laptops/notebooks/iPads on offer. (It really has occurred to me that I could stay put on such adventures, if I could only access the internet in order to go to work every day. A portable computer is the way forward, I feel.) I used a tiny notebook, which had an extremely slow internet connection, to first learn how the issue had been resolved. My friend and I just stood there, with shop assistants hovering around us. "Well, that's one way to shut us up!" I commented. "Checkmate!" The Vinopolis looks very lovely. I love the Victorian archway malarkey. It also seems to be fairly close to Islington, where I'll be staying with another friend. I didn't know at that point that I'd also been refunded my £75! For myself, I'm ecstatic. For the like of Teacuptime, who was waiting on until there was at least a venue named, I'm saddened. It does seem that it was the very best that Jagex could have done, in a dodgy situation. It's redeemed the event, at least, and injected another shot of excitement for those going. I do wonder if the closing of the ticket sales is to do with having to fit in a lot of pre-made props into a smaller space? It is nice to see the forums alive with plans again; though irksome to see the trolls in force. The latter are trying to make out that London is a dangerous warzone, where festival goers will be mugged, raped and shot as soon as they step off the plane. I'm assuming that this is trying to scare people away, so they'll sell their ticket. Noobs.
  13. So this morning my brother "Chris," my father and I woke up early for a bike ride with my friend Trevor (who went to Kenya with me and is like 29, I think). I've been sleeping on a mat in the living room for the past week, not because my room is occupied or anything, but because I have all the gifts I brought back from Kenya lying on my bed, and I'm too lazy to clear them off so that I can sleep in my normal spot. :D On the bright side, it's a heck of a lot easier to wake up when you're outside of a nice, cozy bed. So when my alarm went off at 5:45 AM (or 7:00, as the clock read, for extra psychological encouragement), I was the lucky one who got to nudge my sleepy family awake so that we could all go for a ride. Close to twenty minutes later, we were finally on the road. :) Only my brother had his own bike, so the rest of us borrowed bikes from Trevor and headed off, or rather, tried to. I haven't actually been on a bike in at least six years, not that I ever biked much to begin with, so while I was still trying to get the feel of what it's like to ride, everyone else was cycling down the road, in the opposite direction, towards our destination. Obviously I had to catch up, so I tried to do just that. I had no idea how to work the gears, and I wanted to see if the bike could be adjusted for me, so I sped up to try and reach Trevor so he could show me how to do this stuff. Most unfortunately, they were all progressing down a fairly steep hill with an intersection at the bottom. I started after them and then realized that I had NO IDEA WHERE THE FREAKING BRAKES WERE. They were near my feet, right? But where? What the heck? I was now pelting down the hill at full tilt, in the fastest gear, straight towards my family and Trevor, and had scarcely any idea of how to steer, much less brake. (The idea of the brakes being attached to the handlebars never crossed my mind.) "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO BRAAAAAKE!" I yelled as I pelted towards them, now totally out of control and panicked. At this last word, my head dipped down and I completely catapulted over the handlebars, flying over the pavement and then straight down into it. My bike, meanwhile, flipped over me, flew through the air above my head and hurled itself at Trevor's back. It bounced off the bottom of his back and his back tire, bounced twice more, then lay still, ten feet below me. Absolutely miraculously, I wasn't badly hurt. I took a similar spill when I was seven that was a heck of a lot worse. My right elbow was bleeding, obviously, when I threw it out to catch myself, and so was my knee. I discovered that there was a nasty scrape at my waist where a few layers of skin were missing, but fortunately I'm not one of those idiots who rides around with his shirt off, so it wasn't that bad. It didn't even matter that I was wearing a helmet, because I somehow managed to catch myself like a cat. If I had fur, I'd be unscathed. If I'd hurtled that way into the intersection, I might have died, but I probably would have had enough sense to drive off the road first. I did get something out of those hell-cursed driver's ed lessons, after all. Anyway, then Trevor showed me where the brakes are and we went on to bike about 15 miles, probably as much as I've done in the rest of my life combined. No biggie.

    Catch-up

Sorry, I've had an epic phail at keeping up this blog, despite lots of good things happening this week. But today is an exciting day. Today is the day that Vaskor comes back off holiday and is due to update Runescape Readers' Digest. This means that the entire blogging community can stop relying upon Full of Pie's blog roll and get a choice blog to read for the day. I say 'the entire blogging community', but it might just be me. >.> As for my Runescape moments this week, they've all been in snippets: On Saturday, I had a surprise new top. I'd run around the advanced Barbarian agility course 250, but didn't realise until I had a message come up to say that I should speak to Gunnjorn. That's me in full agility then! I'm floating around with my weight in minus figures, which can reach -32, if I have my boots of lightness and penance gloves on. I wonder if I'd be even lighter if I took off my green hat? On Sunday, I would have blogged a happy, happy dance and woot to Fred, who pwnt Nomad! Congratulations, cariad! I know what an achievement that is. Even more congratulations are in order, as he's now wearing a quest cape. On Monday, I was thrilled by the free Dungeoneering xp. I could access up to level 55 of the new dungeons straight out. By the time I'd been round them all, I had level 60 dungeoneering and could therefore access another one. If I'd have blogged that day though, the title would have been, 'zOMG! A limpwurt root spawn!' It makes me happy. On Tuesday, I should have blogged with a huge congratulations to Kaylayak (aka Cougarsrule9), who achieved 99 attack. I heard the same day that Mister Tiz now has 99 defence. Huge congratulations to all! Yesterday, I finally got round to trying out the Court Case minigame. I prosecuted the Mugger (lvl 6), on the basis that his name is the dead giveaway. And how irresponsible was that of the parents? "What shall we call the baby? Astronaut? Doctor? Professor?" "No, dear, we live in the backstreets of Varrock. Might as well be realistic and call him 'Mugger'." I don't know where I went wrong, but my first court case resulted in an indecisive jury. To be fair, the NPC defence lawyer was brilliant. She had me convinced! The case was adjourned and I went back out to read my notes. Nothing new there. I headed back in and this time managed to pin the crime onto him. I need to go back now, as I was out pickpocketing and whistled a summons from court, for the case of River Troll v the People. As for today, I haven't been anywhere near the place. I often joke that my commute to work in the morning is horrendous. After all, I have to get all out of bed and across the landing... :P This morning, it actually was. I'd just started work when the 'phone rang. I answered it and got caught up with some official stuff with the bank. Finished with that and it rang again. This time it was the fire brigade. They offer a free service in fitting smoke alarms in Britain, so we had ours done months ago. However, I'm partially deaf, so a fog horn wouldn't wake me, if I'm on the wrong side. They sent off for the deaf specialist crew. It's only taken about six months, but we fortunately didn't have any infernos in the meantime. But they were in the vicinity, so could they pop over? It was tipping it down with rain. From their van to my front door, they got soaked. I made them cups of tea and handed out towels. I tried to get their shirts off them for the tumble dryer, but they weren't having it. Instead, I entertained two wet firemen in my bedroom, while they fitted a vibrating bed and invited me to lie on it. This is a true story. The craic is that, if our house fire alarms go off, my whole bed vibrates and a light strobes through the room. I've tested it out three times already. It's great. A cyber-bed ftw! But it also means that I don't have to rely upon hearing anything to save my life in a fire. (The fact that I'm pyrophobic, and most likely to just lie there petrified, is neither by or by.) Also IRL, I have a couple of questions for the cyber-savvy amongst you. The first is: do you understand the authority system at Technorati? I've read it a billion times and got that I get more authority if my posts are topical, then if they're about any old crap. (This is work-related, rather than this blog btw.) So I wrote a blog about the Oil Leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Could you get much more topical than that? 90% of other blogs mentioning Mexico were waffling on about it. My authority on Technorati went down one point. Next up, I wrote a blog about the ancient Maya. My authority went up two points! So the BP oil fiasco isn't topical enough; but telling people about things that happened centuries ago is very topical? How? I might just give up on Technorati. It never refers anyone to us anyway. The other question is: what should I buy? Now that I have both money and some time, I want to go galavanting around the country. I can do my job equally well in Glastonbury, Glasgow or Greenwich, as I could at home, as it's internet-based. However, I work on a desktop computer. Ideally, I'd like something with notepad; access to the internet (with several windows open); and the ability to play iTunes (my music is on an external drive with a USB port). I'm not too worried about it having the ability to play Runescape, as, if I'm not at home, I'll be with friends. When I'm not working, I'll be playing with them. Do you recommend a laptop, a notebook or an iPad? Thanks in advance for your advice. :)

    *cough* Personal Information *cough*

It's something that I seem to be saying a lot in Canting just now. *cough* Personal information *cough* I don't like doing it. I'm not a very confrontational person and I always cringe inwardly when I do feel the need to say it. But I do it anyway. I do it because I want Canting Away to be a safe area for all. At one time, it was getting there. At the barest sniff of personal information being exchanged, there would be a chorus of *cough* personal information *cough* from everyone in there. Then laughter, because of said chorus, before the incident was over. After a period where information had been dropped like confetti (always in little flakes, never a whole biography in one go), it seemed to drop away. I rarely saw anything that made me worry. But those were back in the days when I'd just scared the proverbial out of a prominent member of Canting. In just 5 minutes internet searching, based only on the shreds of information drip fed to us, over a series of months (not even noted down, but remembered), I had this person's real name, home address, school, telephone number, photograph (plus photographs of his family), his father's work address (plus contact e-mail and telephone), and several miscellaneous details. The thing is that I know I'm safe. But you don't know I'm safe. None of us know the reality behind anyone in Runescape. 99.9% of the time, there's nothing dark or sinister to know. People are who they say they are and nothing bad will happen with them knowing all about your real life. However, while there is a teeny-weeny chance that something horrible could happen, then why risk it? * Ashleigh Hall, aged 17, befriended Peter Cartwright on Facebook. She believed that he was a 19 year old, quite fit and handsome, lad. She was flattered by the attention that he paid to her. Over a series of months, they canted and became friends. Then he suggested that they met IRL. She agreed to it. Her guard was right down, because she felt like she knew him. When it came to arrangements, he went to check if his Dad could pick her up from the station. Dad agreed. Ashleigh told her Mum that she was staying at a friend's house, but she actually set off to meet Peter. She texted her friend to say that Peter's Dad was coming to pick her up. Unfortunately, the bloke behind the wheel was Peter. He wasn't 19 at all. He drove her into a field, where he tied her up with tape, raped her and smothered her to death. He was recently given 35 years inside for her murder. BBC News * Kathryn Brauch was 22 and a female gamer. She was playing Runescape, when she befriended a thirteen year old boy. After cultivating the friendship, she received IRL details about his life. He even gave her his address, so that she could send him a mobile 'phone. She used the 'phone to call him up. After more time had passed, she came to visit him. As she was his good friend, the thirteen year old convinced his Mum to let her stay at their house. Mum gave in and not only let her have the guest room, but also left her son and his thirteen year old friend alone in the house with Brauch. She raped them both. Both she and the boy's mother ended up pleading guilty and being sentenced for their crimes. The mother got done for endangering her child and neglect. Big Whoopsy site (all the news sites seem to have archived the story out of search mode!) * Annamay Alexander is 43 years old. She lives in Florida, USA, with her husband and three children. This didn't stop her chatting up a 14 year old, Oklahoma lad, on a Playstation game. They eventually swapped telephone numbers, so she could text him things like, 'My body is yours to do with as you like'. She eventually travelled 1,250 miles to meet him and he left his house, without his parents' knowledge, to meet her. Fortunately, he brought her back home, where Mum finally clicked what was going on. Annamay Alexander is currently in police custody, awaiting trial. Koco.com Oklahoma City news There are loads more like this. These people are the exception rather than the rule, but they do exist. I'd really rather never have to read a news story that says 'Such and such was murdered after meeting a fellow member of close-knit Runescape chat channel, Canting Away'. Over-protective much? Yep. Completely and utterly. Paranoid? Probably not. I don't really think that anyone in Canting is an internet stalker. However, until I can 100% guarantee that, I'd rather go for the over-protectiveness. One of the things that keeps cropping up is me doing the cough thing or >:) at adults. Known or self-proclaimed adults, that is. They're big and ugly enough to make their own decisions, thank you very much; not to mention quite able to take on a predator IRL. This is fair enough. But you should be the example to the younger ones. I know for a fact that there have been/are at least a couple of nine year olds in Canting. I'm fairly certain that there are several ten year olds. And if I have to tell one of the gaggle of 12 year olds to stop spewing personal information again, I'm going to track down his mother and call her up. He's given me enough to go on by now! >:/ These are all of the people silently watching and learning. If it's ok for all of those ten foot tall, body-building college students to go around calling themselves by their real names, then it has to be alright for little Sonny Jim over in the corner there. After all, Canting is so friendly and lovely; we're like a family in there. It's wrong to not pass on IRL information when you're asked. With-hold it and you're not a 'real' Canter. You're getting as fussy and annoying as that loser Merch Gwyar. At least, that's how it could be phrased. The real message is this: It is wrong to pass on IRL information, even when you're directly asked, in Canting. Real Canters refuse. Real Canters are vigilant for each other, because we're not just protecting each other from the revenants or PKers, we're watching out for each other IRL too. Zach and I show you how it should be done. Banner by Fred Lay

    Festivals!

Is anyone else going to Runefest? So far I know to myself, Sparhawke and Tabt. It's 16+ (with parent or guardian), 18+ (without parent or guardian, which is no doubt a huge relief to my parents). I'll see if Daz Rhyfelwr wants to come, though that's going to cause a lot of sadness with Jdeh Rhyfela. ^_^ I'll make it up to him by taking him somewhere lovely too. Also there's much talk in Canting about a Summer Festival to balance our amazing Winter Festival. Simple first raised the idea of a small event at Summer Solstice; by the time the rest of Canting had go hold of the idea, it was another 24 hour party a month later. We're looking at starting midnight GMT on July 30th and having events all day Saturday 31st July 2010. Finishing at midnight GMT then. I learned from the Winter event that some things run over. Therefore any big events, like God Wars trips, aren't going to happen in a single hour. For those wanting to see what to expect, here are videos of the Winter Festival. It will be like this, but more summer-y: This entry will remain the definitive programme of the day, however I'm likely to be asleep during the early part of it. :D Click here for a World Clock Time Converter. The Programme! Canting's Summer Festival

Talking about events, we're only 18 days away from our own! Please click on the banner for more details: Banner by Fred Lay At the moment, it doesn't appear to be a full 24 hour party, but that's fine. We'll just hang out in Canting and do our thing, or have some spontaneous events, if those slots aren't filled. But if anyone does want to do something, then please do take a slot. There are plenty remaining! For those who have already reserved a slot, could you please check that we have all of the necessary details? If you are taking us somewhere dangerous, then it might also be an idea to provide, in advance, recommendations on armour, weapons and inventory. Looks like it's shaping up to be another grand party anyway and, of course, everyone is invited, regardless of whether you've ever been in Canting before. See you there!

    Runefest - The Venue

Please note that nothing in this blog is confirmed as true. It is basically me pulling in a lot of circumstantial evidence and rumours from across the web; then doing some detective work. Please don't take any of it as gospel and assume that we'll find out eventually what the truth is. The Case Runefest was announced to great fanfare and mass spam advertising in April 2010. The tickets went on sale at the beginning of May 2010. Many people got very excited, only to wilt away when they saw the entrance price. £75 for a first event, with little information to justify the cost, held in the most expensive city in Britain, was a little ambitious. Nevertheless, some people immediately bought their ticket. These included people flying from as far afield as Brazil, America and Canada, to attend the event. After the initial rush, it all went silent. Jagex have not commented on the event since May 12th 2010. That was to state that further information will be along shortly. Last Runefest Tweet - image captured July 7th 2010 In the meantime, Runefest-goers have become increasingly anxious. As the venue has not been disclosed, then people don't know where to book their hotels. As the weeks pass, the cost of accommodation and travel rises. These made a huge leap when the date of the Notting Hill Carnival was announced, as the same day as Runefest. There is now a situation of complete silence from Jagex; while the Runefest forum is full of people in states of dismay. The front page of it is full of stickies, so the conversations are happening on page 2. Some have tried to cancel their ticket, only to learn that Ticketmaster will only refund the price if an event is cancelled. Others are already looking into the legal status of this innuii. The frenzy of posts have dipped from: more information on what's happening; to where is it being held?; then finally, is it still even happening? Latest forum posts Latest Tweets I've set myself the task of trying to answer those last two questions. Is it still happening? And if so, where is it being held? My Conclusions Is it still happening? The short answer is: yes, it is. Ticketmaster are still selling tickets and there has been no contrary announcement from Jagex. This means that it's definitely still going ahead at this moment in time. However, the real question should be: is Runefest in jeopardy? Here I would say that the jury is out. I bought a ticket on Saturday and my ticket number was 91. If we assume that the numbers are consequetive, then that would suggest that only 91 tickets have been sold for Runefest. At least until July 3rd 2010. So how many were they expecting? There are 550 tickets on sale, plus those retained for members of staff and special guests. Please don't ask me my source there, as someone might get into trouble. Let's just say that I personally consider that reliable information. If I am correct (and remember that this is all rumour and conjecture), then Jagex have 459 unsold tickets. This also means that they don't have £34,425, which would have gone into the production of the festival. The loss of profit would be awkward, but not insurmountable. This is a company that just took a hit of a couple of million in scrapping Mechspace. It's owned by one of the wealthiest people in Britain today. I'm not saying that Andrew Gower would be ecstatic at dipping into his own pocket to make up the shortfall, but it's a feasible stopgap. It would allow this Runefest to go ahead, though I'm assuming that lots of question marks would be placed over future events. What is a more pressing concern would be how that looks on the day. There is nothing more desolate and open to ridicule than a huge event with only a smattering of people there. I've organised events for years, I've frequently had to make these calls. If nothing else, then it's bad PR for those there. It points to a failure of your company. Moreover, those people would be lost in a big room. It would make it look like a ghost town. If this was me organising it, then I'd be looking to two options: a) cancel the event; or b) get more people there. I'm guessing that Jagex really don't want to go for option A. They could market it as it all being our fault and therefore shut up about it, as they did with the loss of the Wildy. There would be uproar, but it would die down. However, it would also send a big neon light message to both us and the Gaming Industry. In a nutshell, the message would be: Jagex couldn't run a piss-up in a brewery. It doesn't look good on a business level. Even if they did a nicely, nicely announcement, the message would still be the same. But also agravating the situation is the fact that many people are coming from over-seas. If they cancelled on Britons like me, then I'd just get a return on my money and live would go on. But for those with plane-tickets booked, they're asking their delegates to take an actual hit in the pocket. That's a big responsibility. So option B would be better. I suspect that it's what they're hoping on right now. If they could get just 300 people there, then it would look ok. They could probably do that in employees alone, but that would risk Runescape running on too small a skeleton staff. They could possibly fly in well-known players, but if they do too much of that, it could backfire. For a start, there's more expensive there. But information like that also gets out. 100 paying players versus 200 non-paying players creates a two-tier delegate system. It would work, if no-one found out. But the sheer numbers involved would make the strategy like a leaky sieve for information. It's here that Jagex's complete inexperience with event organisation is telling. They should be aggressively marketing it on the forums and websites; hoping that for every 100 complaints that they're doing so, there will be one person goes and buys a ticket. They should be in the Runefest forums, reassuring the people panicking there. They should be answering Tweets on the subject. At this moment in time, the worst thing that they could do is precisely what they are doing - the head in the sand, oh dear I'm an ostrich routine. It's my guess that the crunch day will be July 28th. This is a month before the event, so traditionally this is when events should be cancelled or else forged ahead. However, this is also the day when Jagex runs up against Ticketmaster's terms and conditions. At the moment, no-one can print a ticket for Runefest, because Ticketmaster haven't released the Ticketfast mechanism to do so. No-one has their e-mailed PDFs and no-one has access to the on-line print facility. Those with tickets are confronted with this: As it's been well over 24 hours, I've queried it. The tickets will be released a month before the event, ie July 28th. Ticketmaster will not wait on longer than that. It's also my belief that Ticketmaster won't keep the venue secret once the tickets are out. So, even if Jagex don't announce it, Ticketmaster will reveal the venue on that date. So July 28th has to be make or break time. On that day, the venue will be revealed and we'll all get our tickets; or the event will be cancelled. That's my conclusion. Where is it Being Held? A while ago, someone looked at the text only version of the Runefest site. They found this information in the background of it. Unless it's been taken down again, you can read it here. But the text reads: Here is the link to the Olympia Conference Centre. It would do the job very well, but the capacity is too small. It holds 449 people, which would be better for the number of tickets that they've sold, but not those which they hoped to sell. I've been hunting around in the available event spaces of that centre and my guess is that the Apex Room could be where they had in mind. The capacity is 606, which sounds about right (550 punters, plus staff and guests). It's within the same complex as the main conference room, but holds more people. However, there are a variety of suites in the conference centre, so, presuming that they are all free, Jagex could well swap to something much smaller, like the Thames Room, beforehand. That would solve everything. Capacity of 300 would fill up to halfway with the punters, staff and special guests. Anyway, that's what I've come up with. I guess we'll have to wait and see how much I got correct. Edit: More information: What's Happening at the Event? * Insider talks - Andrew and Paul Gower, Mod MMG and Mod Mark will be giving keynote speeches. But there will also be access to many other people, who work on all aspects of Runescape; these will be running simultaneously all day, so delegates get to choose which sessions they wish to attend. * Informal talks - Smaller seminars, where the audience/players choose the topics of discussion; * Event Dungeoneering - Team up with fellow players to train Dungeoneering IRL, in a purpose built, life-sized Runescape Dungeon; * Create your own Runescape Content - Messing around with graphics and computer tools to create a Runescape something; * Golden Gnome Awards - Read about this on the Runefest site; * Art Gallery - A display of artwork (possibly conceptual art); * Poison Arrow pub, serving the ales and other beverages familiar to denizens of Gielinor. Edit two: Do you like the new look? My green, pointy hat has been swapped temporarily for a gold one: Edit three: Five days later, on July 8th, 2010, I've just got my flagstaff code. I wonder if that's because I complained to the billing e-mail address? Edit four: We have communication! From the 'Is it Happening?' thread on the RSO Runefest forum This is the thread where people have been demanding answers; which both prompted and mentioned this blog entry; and where, finally, we were all discussing alternative events if Runefest is cancelled. Mod Kat obviously felt the need to do the right thing and utter some words of reassurance. Edit five: Suddenly we can't move for mods! Mods Poppy and Kathy have added their words of reassurance: From the 'Jagex just Nerfed Runefest!' thread on the RSO Runefest forum From the 'Where in London is Runefest?!!' thread on the RSO Runefest forum From the 'KNOCK KNOCK.' thread on the RSO Runefest forum From the 'Is it happening?' thread on the RSO Runefest forum NB I will be away this weekend and therefore unable to blog with any further developments until Monday. Have a lovely weekend all. :D

    Congratulations!

Loads of people seem to be getting 99s just recently. Congratulations to you all. Especially congratulations to AquarianPixi and Krazy Karl5, who had a race to get their woodcutting skillcape. They're both now walking around looking very fine with their capes-with-a-tree-on-it. I unfortunately missed all of the parties. :( However, I was around to see Nezantra get 70 mage! :( Of course, he laughed at me adding my name, as he knew who I was. I did point out that there was a picture being taken. :/ And there it is, Nez. Two other members of Canting, Full Gangsta and Wellington T, have been working on a gaming website. They asked me to mention it to you all: Allyourgameguides.com. Consider it mentioned. Finally, I'd like to big up the Canting Away Summer Festival, as we're getting quite close now. There are still some gaps in the schedule, if anyone would like to fill them. :P Just click on the banner for information so far: Banner by Fred Lay

    Runefest

I've bought a ticket to Runefest. I'm still entirely wary of this event, simply because we're not being told what we're getting for our money. I've spent the past decade or so organising events, local and national, and so I'm cringing with every mistake they're making. To be at July and still not know the actual venue is a huge one. To not have a programme is another big one. There is also a lack of transparency over the cost. The site says that the tickets are £75. They aren't. There is only one means of purchasing them, which is via Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster add on their charges, plus you have no option but to choose the postal delivery. By the time these compulsory extras are added, the ticket costs £82.25. Jagex might be charging £75, but that is NOT the price of the ticket. I was all up for this when it was first announced. Then the price was announced and all interest waned. As far as I know, Tabt and Easl are going, but no-one else in our gang. The price of getting to London and staying for at least one night was also prohibitive. It's unacceptable that none of us even know where to book a hotel. The underground system in London is very lovely, but it can take up to an hour and half to travel from the outskirts to central London. Even a borough would be helpful. As it is, I decided to leave it to the Gods. While I was at the Glastonbury Festival (and not at all sober), I declared that if I could find a green, pointy hat on sale during this festival, I would go to Runefest. My friend was intrigued, so I told her all about it. She pointed out that she lives in Islington and therefore there is a floor for me to sleep on for however long I wish. Yay! Five minutes later, I had a green, pointy hat too. The Gods have spoken. So there's the craic. I'm reluctantly going, whilst feeling like I'm being conned. I'm hoping that it will all be worth it. Is anyone else going?
  22. Hunting penguins is usually such a pleasant experience. My record is just over 13 minutes (no, I have no idea how that happened either... maybe the clock stopped...), but ordinarily, I'll take my time over it. I'll have my moment trapping penguins or, if not needed, I'll ensure that I'm calling out the penguins that I see as I go. I generally carry my Fally 3 shield, particularly if dangerous places are involved, as I can bless graves and then move on with full prayer from it. I've been known to be at the head of a long train of noobs, leading them to safety through the perils of Morytania Swamp, Tirannwn, the Wild, Ape Atoll or the lands north of Neitiznot and Jaitiso. I'm telling you all of this not because I want a medal, but to illustrate how safe and lovely the penguin hunting routes usually are. Until today. The penguin was on the snowy island north of Neitiznot. This used to be a scary place for me. In fact, go to the very earliest entries in this blog and you'll find many tales of Post Traumatic Troll Bashing Syndrome, as I struggled through the Fremmenik Isles quest. But I was very little in those days, whereas now I'll elbow my muscle-bound level 119 bulk through any ice trolls you care to mention. I'll happily escort people in the midst of their quest up into the really dangerous areas. If a star lands there, I'm one of those pausing to smack around any trolls attempting to bully miners. Therefore, you can imagine how I skipped off the boat to Neitiznot, pausing to breathe in the fresh, salty air and to admire the pretty flowers blooming along the track. Another pleasant day on the isles, with the gentle lapping of the ocean tides and the tortured screaming of the massacred yaks. I bimbled on northwards, following the path around the town. The place was buzzing with people, many calling out the location of the penguin. It was on the loose, up over the rope-bridge and now over the second rope-bridge too. A player with a lower combat level begged for an escort through the trolls. I was about to offer, but a gentleman with an attack cape on took gallantly took her arm and led her into the snowy wastes. I double-checked that I had my Fally 3 shield, as I could already see a gravestone across the inlet. All good, so across I went. The penguin, of course, was nowhere to be seen. "It's gone east!" Strength Cape man told Woodcutting Cape friend, so I followed him. He seemed to know what he was doing. I soon lost them in the crowds. "Over here!" yelled Slayer Cape/Red Phat Woman. People rushed in a wave of pixel humanity, but I couldn't see any penguin. Then a glimpse! It wasn't over the second rope-bridge at all. It was back in the narrow strip between the two. I hurried to the bridge and clicked to cross. There was no option. Strange. Maybe I was clicking in the wrong place. Those bridges are always tricksy things. If you don't position yourself in precisely the right spot, then you miss the 2 pixel squared area that pulls up the 'cross rope-bridge' option. I could not find it for love nor gp. I clicked away all over the Guthix-forsaken thing, but nothing came up. I was being pummelled by trolls, but remained unconcerned. I have a lot of hp these days and I was right there. I'd be across any second now. It was with some shock that I heard my heartbeat in my ears. No way! But before I could react, the combined forces of two ranger trolls and one adult male hit-you-with-a-large-club troll did their horrific worst. I fell to the ground and, a frozen moment later, arrived at Soul Wars. At first I was too stunned to move. That was my first penguin, give or take the one trapped in the cowpen of Rellekka, so my bag had been full of all the things that I'd need to find all of the rest. Money for boats; my enchanted water tiara; various achievement diary awards; my Charos (a) Ring; runes; potions; and, oh Guthix! My green, pointy hat! I checked my bag. I had my lyre, my glory and my quest cape. Everything else was under that grave on the other side of Gielinor. Now I moved. Now I plucked the strings of that lyre like a demented troubadour. I raced through Rellekka and dived onto the ferry taking me across. I had plenty of time. My gravestone lasts for five minutes! I rushed up to the first rope-bridge with well over 3 minutes to spare. I descended upon my grave and attempted to bless it. No joy. The Gods don't like that. So I yanked out my green hat and the enchanted tiara. I was grabbing all of the rest, when suddenly I was dead again. What?! What kind of freaking noob does all of that without armour and with no prayer activated? This time I moved quickly - lyre, running, boat, running, oh look! There's the penguin!, spying, running, grave, grabbing. I got all of my stuff, but I was being piled again. Too short of hp to contemplate finding the bridge crossing option, I ran west, away from them. They followed. I managed a grand total of three squares, before I crashed down dead at the foot of a tree. Now I was starting to panic. I had the wherewithal to rush into Canting though. There was no 'ohai everyone, terribly sorry that rl has kept me out of here for a week'. No, instead I streaked in with an anguished cry of, 'SOS! Neitiznot ice trolls, W60!' In short, precisely the concise information that I wish that others would give me during their own crises, rather than the usual, 'OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG Help!!!!' Which, to be fair, is what I was thinking at the time. I was already running. As I rushed up to the ferry dock, I saw a green dot. By the time I was over, I had typed, 'Help me!' As it was, there were two dots. Neither were people actually in Canting, but just happened to be in the right place at the right time. MFI and Untouchabl3 didn't waste text on pleasantries and 'how do you do's. They hurtled up the bank with me, as I gushed out, 'Died! 3 times! Grave!' MFI was half over the bridge, as he called out, 'What do you need, Merchy?' 'Bless! Grave!' 'Where is it?!' They followed me to the tree and there was a whoosh of glorious light. MFI has blessed your grave. It will remain for 59 minutes. Hurrah! Except not hurrah, because even as their cheery goodbyes were ringing in my ears, I was dying again. MFI was in Canting now, praising the serendipitous meeting, but I was trembling like a leaf back at the Soul Wars bank. I gabbled out the bad news to an array of groans in Canting. By now, half of the chat channel were suited and booted and on the way to help me. MFI advised me to stop panicking and to get out some food before I go up there. If I just prayed range and ate my food, I'd be fine. I was already halfway across Rellekka, with the time ticking on, in the knowledge that this was my last lyre teleport charge. Every instinct screamed to just get up there before all of my stuff was lost beneath the crumbling rubble of my grave; but there were those words, 'stop panicking'. They had their echo in a blog that I read long ago - 'most deaths in Runescape are caused by panicking'. Am I panicking? Yes, I am panicking. Listen to MFI. So I veered off into Neitiznot bank and grabbed ten tuna and sweetcorn spuds. I ate one of them before anything even attacked me. Yeah, ok, maybe panicking just a teeny, weeny... lot. But this time it was so much easier. As they piled me, I ate spuds. In between, I grabbed another item. Then ate. Then grabbed. Then ate. Until nothing was left under the grave and I fled. In truth, I fled in the wrong direction. I was out into the snowy wasteland and halfway to Jaitiso before I took stock of my surroundings. But it would do. At least Jaitiso has a bridge you can just run over! And I was safe. I was standing in that blessed town, with all of my stuff on me, including my bones, which I buried, because that's just macabre. I took a deep breath and let Canting know. Slightly late there, but my first attempt, partway across the island, had been announced out loud, as I'd forgotten the slash. The like of Krazy Karl5 and Tanyakins were already nearly there, but they exhaled a sigh of relief and returned to what they were doing. The crisis was over. And now, three years and several combat levels on, I think I'm coming down with Post Traumatic Troll Bashing Syndrome again. :)
