  1. After getting 65 slayer, I used my last two WGS 100k xp lamps to get level 68! Having also recently collected from my kingdom a variety of seeds, I have been able to get some farming done, landing me level 67 in that :) . Now I can get Varrock 3 and Falador 3 diary equipment, which is pleasant and which I'm sure will at some point be expedient as well. I have yet to go and get them, though: I need to plant an ivy bush and find out where the bush patch is, as well as (eek!) slay a Skeletal Wyvern. Which is slightly scary. After being given 1M by that love-child goblin, along with careful shopping and kingdom management, I broke the 10M mark! Green money is nice, although I then spent it on some runes. Having 68 slayer meant, of course, that I could go and do the (fifth?) Myreque quest, the branches of darkmeyer. It's been an exciting quest so far, full of varied puzzle, action, and so on, but I am struggling against the boss. I'm tempted to invest in some powerful ranged equipment, like Karils or something. Anyway, it's a challenge, and that's fun! For the first time ever, I joined Merch Gwyar on Skype (it was a fun experience, chatting to people with voice rather than text, I'd love to do that again) and she came and helped me in-game, giving me advice on the boss fight and Vanstrom's attacks, some of which I have passed on in the relevant forum for the salmoneus.net guide. In particular, attacking while Vanstrom is flying is very worthwhile. Kayla was also doing the quest at the same time, though not in the same world. Interestingly enough, the boss fight is fantastic range xp despite the fact that I keep dying. So...time to gear up and get going at Vanstrom Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax-Klaude, or VK for short. I look forward to killing him. Ta-ta, Salsians, and I wish you luck in whatever you do. Unless it's illegal, in which case I don't!
  2. Before I go into the fine detail about my trip to Jagex, I want to address the contentious issues of Squeal of Fortune and the NDA. I know that many of you reading will only be interested in those, so it'll save you wading through the rest of my waffle. There was a NDA, as we all knew that there would be. It wasn't the one on the door, that everyone has to sign. It was a separate, single-side of A4 letter, which was handed to me by Mod Poppy. It was in plain English, not legal speak, and it did not even seek to silence me beyond the hours spent in Jagex Studios. Even then, we're talking restrictions, rather than shut up about it. In a nutshell, the NDA stops me giving away spoilers or compromising player safety or game security. As far as I'm concerned that's fair enough. As for Squeal of Fortune, I knew my duty there. It was to ensure that I'd raised player objections wherever and whenever the opportunity arose to do so. I did that. I crow-barred some opportunities into the mix. I handed over the Sal's Realm questions, which mentioned it. I talked about it constantly throughout the afternoon. Poor Mod Poppy, Mod Murray and Mod Emma F heard it so often that they must have inwardly cringed whenever someone inadvertently gave me an opening. They all had the patience of saints and never once told me to STFU with SoF protests already! Short of standing in the stairwell or central courtyard and screaming it, so that even the people working on Transformers, 8Realms and the like heard all about it, there's little more that I could have done. With the emphasis on 'little more'. I was halfway down the motorway when it occurred to me that I'd missed the biggest opportunity of all. I'm sorry. I called myself every form of freaking noob when I realised, but by then I was roughly at junction 28 of the A14, battling through a torrential downpour in the dark, and the moment had long since past. Right at the end of the day, I'd briefly bumped into Paul Gower. I should have complained to him about Squeal of Fortune, but it didn't cross my mind. I don't know why. It had more than crossed my mind all day long to the point where I sounded like a stuck record. All I can think is that the tour was officially over with Mod Poppy just ninja-ing an extra hour on the end (in her own time) to show me the rest of the building. I was tired, hiding cramps, but utterly fascinated by all that I was seeing. I relaxed too soon and for that I'm really sorry. If my remit was to waltz in there and get Squeal of Fortune taken down right now, then I was never going to win. If it was to get the words said, the impact understood, the pure emotion of feeling that we're all losing our game, then I did it. Hand on heart, I can say that dozens of J Mods heard that plea. They all listened intently. None of them apologised for it.Your Tweets and Facebook messages, while I was there, helped too. I did my absolute best. I was invited as a guest of player support only as a result of an article I wrote on Internet Safety and as much as I tried to crowbar SoF into every conversation Mod Murray made clear from the moment I arrived that we wouldn’t be discussing it that day, we would be discussing only player support related matters. I don't even have any impressions to share with you about the future of micro-transactions. I wish I had. For the rest of the trip, I'm going to unfortunately have to direct you over to Wizzley. Sorry!
  3. Hi all, I'm back home and freaking knackered! Fortunately there were no major adventures on the way back, just a very, very long run in the rain and dark. By necessity, there will be some delay in recounting all that happened today, but I do have something immediate to share with you. As promised I presented that A4 sheet of questions to Mod Poppy, practically as soon as I was through the door. It got handed to the head of community relations, whose name is Mod Stevew. It was handed back to me with answers at the end of the visit. Not all questions received answers. Those were just left blank, but for clarity I'll put 'no answer' after them. Herty: What's your stance on RS2006? Could you release Runescape from before August 2007, like the RSC release? Mod Stevew: Each time we update the game we don't keep any of the old assets, and we only change things when we genuinely believe it's an improvement. So, even if we did want to revert to an older graphic set, we just couldn't do it. We are aware that a desire exists to have a version of the game with older graphics, but like many things in life - we do tend to look back on the past and associate it with good times, and then we find that if we actually revisit those things that we treasure so much from 'back in the day', they are not quite as great as our memories would have us believe. As the joke expression goes 'nostalgia ain't what it used to be!'. Hilbrande: Why do they make F2P so bad? They were talking about account transfering; are they considering changing the rules? Mod Stevew: We believe that the free game far exceeds other offerings in the industry in terms of play time and immersive content. Lonely: Is the game going to be shut down soon and now you're just trying to drain every penny out of it? Mod Stevew: No, we are fully committed to the future of RuneScape and making sure it is around for future generations, making RuneScape the best it can possibly be and continually evolving the game with regular updates and improvements is what make us get out of bed in the morning! Gri3f and Minerex: Tell them to make me a mod pl0x! Mod Stevew: Enjoy the game, have fun, support the community and we will spot you! Fred Gwyar: 1, Why not make the SoF only give cosmetic and lucky items, why include XP? Mod Stevew: No answer. Fred Gwyar: 2, Why not market 'special emotes' or decorative clothing/skins (as the green skin with RuneFest) for a few $? Mod Stevew: No answer. Fred Gwyar: 3, What do they think about the all time high of rants on the Forum, especially the +16k thread about SoF? Mod Stevew: We are fortunate to have a passionate community who give us almost instantaneous feedback about all we do - sometimes we have to agree to disagree, but we do read feedback - and when sensible and well thought out comments are made, we always afford those suggestions careful consideration. Fred Gwyar: 4, Considering Jagex hired JacMob (bot scripter) and the bot nuke a few months ago where Jagex told us only 2% will be still working, why do we have so many bots back now??? I'd like to see a RS free of bots before the Mayan prediction comes to term... Mod Stevew: As always, the lat thing we want to do is let bot developers know what we have planned next - we can say that we are totally on it, we will never give up and we share our genuine players desire to have a bot free game. Conspicuous: When can I "officially" buy gp from Jagex? Mod Stevew: No answer. Conspicuous: Why didn't they increase subscription costs? Mod Stevew: No answer. Conspicuous: Each member, what football team they support? Mod Stevew: We have a Jagex staff football team so they are widely supported by everyone here at the studio. We are not quite ready to take on Barcelona yet but watch this space! Conspicuous: What their stand is to the concept of Communism and Capitalism. Mod Stevew: No answer. Conspicuous: If they like the Freemasons. Mod Stevew: No answer. Conspicuous: When they're going to fix the combat triangle (general answer will be nice). Mod Stevew: Combat you say? Hmmmm. We are very close to being able to let the whole community know what plans we have - 2012 is an exciting year for Combat in RuneScape, more news very soon! Conspicuous: If they're going to reduce the power of OP weapons. Mod Stevew: No answer. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Those were all of the questions and answers. There will be more to write, but right now I am genuinely exhausted and drained. I hope to get a full blog about the visit out over the next few days, and I'll certainly aim for it to be asap. I'm well aware that everyone is waiting on this. I would like to answer this Tweet though: I was not offered a mod status and I most certainly would not have signed a NDA that read anything like that. I retain full freedom to write whatever I wish to write before and beyond this afternoon. If that includes criticism over Jagex, then that will happen. Equally if I feel praise is due, then that too will happen. Freedom of speech is one of the human rights that I hold most dear; but I also understand that freedom of speech includes courtesy, respect and personal responsibility. Today the latter must come into play.
  4. I have a couple of hours to kill before visiting Jagex Studios, and an internet connection, so I thought that I'd tell you about the trip so far. This hasn't much in the way of Runescape related content though. Yesterday morning I spent a couple of hours getting ready to leave the house. That included hunting through maps for the route and directions to the B&B, but it also involved carefully noting all of those questions asked in the previous entry about this. I can't promise to get any answers for them, but what I can guarantee is that every question asked by a Sal's person on that blog entry is now carefully typed up on a single A4 sheet and sitting in my bag. I'll ask them and that's as far as I can go. I hit the road at half 11. Cambridge on the other side of the country, east of me; but it's fundamentally two extremely long roads there, with some faffy little ones at either side. The M6 empties onto the A14, carry on until everything goes ridiculously flat and there are no petrol stations. This latter was a problem. Once you enter the southern tip of Leicestershire, there are no services on the motorway. This was the moment that my petrol light chose to come on. I didn't fret. After all the map had made it look like I'd be leaving the motorway shortly. There was bound to be services as soon as the slip-road ended. There always were. Prime business location and all. *insert slightly hysterical laughter* Instead that junction had roadworks. They were even more annoying than the roadworks which had gone on forever through the Black Country and Birmingham. At least you moved through them. These Leicestershire roadworks saw me sitting half on the motorway, half off, shifting a yard or two every few minutes, then stopping again. I couldn't see anything except the backside of a lorry. There were a lot of lorries here. The ferry port of Felixstowe is further along the A14 than Cambridge, so there seemed more cargo lorries than cars. And all the time, my petrol is dripping away. I finally managed to get onto the A14 to find said lorries competing with each other for progress. They colonised both lanes of travel; and lorries don't move very fast. We crawled by a sign, 'services 17 miles'. You have to be kidding me! There was no way that I was going to have 17 miles worth of petrol in my tank. The dial was right back on the second red line and it had been for a while. I left at junction 1, on the basis that there HAD to be a petrol station here. Nope. There was a country lane with Saxon sounding village names on a sign before me. I picked the nearest. Thornby 2 miles, then drove praying through scenery where absolutely nothing is holding up the sky. Flatness for miles. Rain-sodden clouds for miles. No hint of a petrol station for miles. Just past Thornby, a lady was sitting in her car eating her lunch. I appeared at her window, with a map and a look of desperation. My petrol light was not only on now, but it was flashing. I had visions of having to call the AA and say, "I'm in the EAST. I don't know where. Please bring petrol and mountains." The lady said that there was possibly a petrol station in Guildsborough, because it was quite big. I went there. It wasn't quite big and there wasn't a petrol station. But there was a post office-cum-general store, full of customers. I burst in there and the lovely gentleman behind the counter drew me a little map to the nearest services - six miles away. A customer intervened. There was another one just three or four miles away. He altered my map and repeated the directions several times. Everyone was wearing the pained expression of 'she's never going to make it, not with the light long since flashing'. One man told me that he'd pray for me. It must have been that divine intervention that kicked in, because by the time I reached the petrol station in Spratton, I'd done about 20 miles with the light actually flashing. I'd done about 40 since it had first come on! All in all, the petrol adventure took nearly three-quarters of an hour diversion. I finally made it back to the A14 in time for those threatening clouds to drop their payload. It was sheet rain smashing blindingly against the window-screen. Everyone slowed right down. Every vehicle had turned into a moving pocket of backlash water. The lorries slushed move over everyone. According to my Dad, it should have taken an hour and half to get to Cambridge. It took three. But happy days! I was here! And that was exciting! Cambridge isn't just the home of Jagex, it's also Syd Barrett country (and he's God. I might pretend to be Wiccan, but I'm actually SydBarrettian. True religion.). Moreover it's the home of the owners of another forum which I frequent and I had a meeting set up with them too. As soon as I left, on junction 33 of the A14, I could see the Science Park. Of the three lane traffic, two are devoted to funneling vehicles into it. It's HUGE; and that's where Jagex are based. That found, I carried on to the Alder Lodge. This was the B&B that the nice lady from Laterooms.com had found for me, when my original choice refused to take people for one night mid-week. It was not only much nicer, but was literally around the corner from Jagex. That was purely coincidental, as the lady had been looking for something cheap in the vicinity of the centre and this was the best that she could do. I was shown into my room and immediately boiled the kettle. While I was sorting out my bag, I could hear two men loudly canting in a neighbouring room. Suspicion dawned, but I shrugged it off, after all the odds against it were astronomical. Then I recalled that it was Beltane, which means that bizarreness can and will happen to point where it's normal. The fact is that before I'd left the house, I'd received word from Fred that Runeshark were also going to be touring Jagex the same day. I've watched their Godsword from Scratch videos, as MFI is a huge fan and he introduced me to them. However, I didn't know James and Simon themselves. I urgently blasted off a few Tweets, in an attempt to make myself known to them before we left. There was no response. Why should there be? If it had been Silentc0re or even Excl, then we'd at least canted before. As far as Runeshark were concerned, I was some random Runescape player crashing in on their big day. I opened my hotel room door and just a few feet away the door opposite was wide open. I hadn't expected that. I cringed away with a 'sorry' and went to shut mine again. Then stopped myself with a mental beratement of 'noob'. Both lads were looking at me. I gushed out, "Are you Simon and James?" "Yes." "Runeshark?!" "Yes." They both looked a bit confused. I suppose that I should have explained myself, as they were staring at me. Instead I babbled out, "No, that does't happen." Before gathering a bit of decorum. "I'm Merch Gwyar." Blankness. "I'm visiting Jagex tomorrow too." One of them explained that they hadn't known that anyone else would be coming. In truth it was all a bit awkward. They appeared to be polite, lovely lads, but they were also busy sorting out equipment for some imminient filming. I kind of faded back into my room after a few minutes and left them to it. But never fear! I was off to DO Cambridge! The afternoon passed in a whirl of Syd Barrett related sites. Part of the reason for my late departure was because I was scouring the internet for lists of them. From the second that I stepped off the bus, I was finding them. I have photographs of doors! Syd once played in a room behind them or the like. One by one, I ticked off the places listed in my pad, really enjoying myself for having been. The only one I missed was his memorial bench in the Botanic Gardens. That was put there by the Astral Piper website back in about 2006. I donated money to buy it; and got the t-shirt that I was now wearing in response. But you have to pay £5 to get into the gardens, which really didn't seem worth it for a bench. It's not like he'd ever actually sat on it. It was a MEMORIAL bench. I have got two photographs of myself in places where he was photographed though. One was taken by a lad reading 'V for Vendetta' (well trying to read it, until he was interupted by a grinning fangirl wanting random pictures taken). I have to say that everyone that I met in the East has been extremely friendly. They will all stop for a cant with strangers; and they will go out of their way to help visitors to the area. Absolutely not what I expected from a bunch of Saxons and Angles. The impression that I got (from the 6th century histories) was far more blood-curdling. I did notice that, though there are all colours, heights, shapes, races etc, the predominance in the East is for tall, blond people. We're mostly short-arse, dark haired people in the West. Our histories are all around us, if we just look. In Cambridge, history is very much in your face. Many of the buildings are mediaeval. The streets and alley-ways curl around them; and you can see how the city grew holistically from the 1100s. Modernity appears grudgingly super-imposed over the top of it. Even McDonalds has been forced to blend into the background. It's double gold arches are relegated to mere decoration on an olde worlde faux gas lamp outside the door. Once I'd run out of Syd Barrett tourism possibilities, I took to staring up at torrents and walls, educating myself by reading plaques on the wall. I found the place where Physics was invented, so took some photos for Audioworm. (There's also a nuclear clock on a prominent street corner. It was designed by Stephen Hawking, according to my reliable source - the taxi driver - and it's the most accurate clock in the world.) The other main thing that you notice about the city are the bicycles. They are everywhere! Racks of them populate every spare space. Notices on shop windows threaten pain and instant death if you rest your bike against them. Young, old, fit and gasping, they all had their bicycles. I finally got another insight into Syd Barrett's song 'Bike'. Got it! Eventually it was time to meet Eddz and Toad. The former is local, while the latter is staying with him while she does her university degree. They are the owners of another site I'm on, which is similarly full of wide-eyed people right now. The issue here isn't the potentially criminal, morally reprehensible sort currently enjoyed by Jagex; it's more the 'zOMG! We're moving sites and we have to PAY for it!?!' variety. Eddz, Toad and I had a meal in a Japanese restaurant and discussed it all. Then we wandered around the city looking at stuff that I'd missed before. Finally we ended up in Syd Barrett's favourite pub ( >.> ) for the rest of the evening. Canadian Toad was introduced to Pimms. I got my photograph taken at the top of the stairs to the Jazz Club below. And we discussed the site. The conclusion was the best of all. Many breaches of communication were fixed. I was delighted to return to the forum, once I was back in my hotel room, and declare that I now supported the changes. Our site was not disappearing; and the new site (Anipan) sounds amazing. I'm really enthusiastic about it and willing to help them achieve it. It could potentially blow DeviantART out of the water. Neither of them said that, but I will. And that can only be a good thing, considering how downright dodgy the administration of DA are. We were having such a good time by the finish that I ended up missing the last bus back to the B&B! I ended up having to pay £8.40 in a taxi. *sob* This whole trip, what with one thing or another, has turned out to be way more expensive than I can easily afford. I'm seriously going to have to tighten my belt for a bit, though a lot of it got pushed onto my credit card, so it can be in installments. I finally fell asleep around 2am, which was a git, as my alarm was set for 7am. I could hear Runeshark giggling and chatting away in the neighbouring room. They sounded so happy, bless them. :D Next Morning I don't do mornings. I especially don't do mornings after little sleep, when I have to get dressed and go outside to have a cigarette; negotiate my way through an unfamiliar kettle; shower, dress and make myself decent in an unfamiliar bathroom; and then have a conversation over breakfast. To make matters worse, as soon as I staggered blearily onto the toilet, I had a stark reminder that I had hit puberty all of those years ago. Before the male Slammers scream, 'Errrkkkk! TMI!', let me explain why that's in here. I do want to get things said, on behalf of players, to Jagex. But I'm now doing that with cramps and all of the colour drained from my face. A stern word will have me in tears. A sharp word will have me punching someone's lights out. And in this state, I go to represent you all. Runeshark have already gone. They have a separate tour to me, with their's beginning at 9am. Mine is midday. I briefly spoke with one of them at breakfast, but we didn't get a good conversation in. Hopefully we'll catch up later on. It's 10.35am now, and I'm typing in the Alder Lodge. In 25 mins, I have to leave this room and therefore lose internet connection again. I'll try to Tweet as much as possible. In an hour and 25 mins, I will be entering Jagex Studios and potentially signing an NDA. Please note that anything I say after that will be within the limits of its terms and conditions. Wish me luck.
  5. I've had some bizarre moments in my life, but none quite beats this for pure surreality. You all know that I've been writing a blog here since 2007. Most of you probably know that I've also been writing Runescape related articles over on Wizzley. I was partway through my third one in reaction to the Squeal of Fortune fiasco, when I received an e-mail from Richard Murray. He invited me to come to Cambridge to tour the Jagex Studios. It was followed by a telephone conversation. I'm definitely going - hotel booked, dreadlocks tidied, maps consulted. Of course, my first question was, 'will I be allowed to blog about it?' The answer is yes, though I'll have to sign forms and let them see it first. I thought it was all about this blog, here on Sal's, because I didn't think for one second that the stuff I was putting out on Wizzley was going to see me making friends and influencing people. But no. It was the Wizzley articles which had prompted it. We were a long way into the telephone conversation before he even realised that I was Merch Gwyar too. Let me confirm something else straight away. I took the opportunity of that call to make my views well and truly felt about micro-transactions. They still want to see me. The whole thing is really fretting my Mum, bless her. She's looked at my Wizzley articles and immediately demanded that I give her Jagex's address. In her words, it's so that if I don't come back again, they 'know where to look for the body'. *dies* But there you go. Write an article knocking Jagex's owners; get invited to tour the studios. And yes, that is what I was writing at the time of the invitation. Incidentally, my dreadlocks look absolutely fabulous. :D
  6. A player named Trevorghost has visited the offices of Insight Venture Partners on behalf of the Runescape players. He took with him printed sheets from the forum. One contained nearly 8k names of people in opposition to microtransactions. The other had the first few pages from the 15.5k strong main thread about it. In all of those pages, only one person had anything positive to say about Squeal of Fortune. This is what happened next: The thread became locked three pages later, but the last post was from a JMod: Also the forums are buzzing with news that some JMods have resigned/been fired over the microtransactions and Squeal of Fortune in particular. There is no firm evidence behind this, but it feels a little more than 'they should all be sacked'. The relevant threads are being shut down by Forum Mods, who state that employee relations are not for public speculation. It's between the individuals and their employers. If JMods have walked out over this, then I applaud them, but I also feel desperately worried on their behalf. Britain is not a place to be out of work at the moment. Edit: And this was my response to that.
  7. Over 15k comments in a single thread against Squeal of Fortune and still no word from Jagex. That's just one thread, the forums are full of them. Perhaps the JMods got muted for Real World Trading. I know it's Easter, but you'd think that someone somewhere would recognise a train wreck when they saw one. It feels planned that the microtransactions were released this week, so that the bank holidays could be used as an excuse for prolonging the lack of response. Nothing feels too insidious to level against the company right now. They've already pre-empted my lowest expectations. Do I agree with Squeal of Fortune? Of course not, for all of the reasons that I laid out here:Uproar Over Jagex Microtransactions. But there's something more personal too. It bothers me that I've put in all of this work, since December 2006, and now others can simply buy their way to my stats. That's annoying and I've already seen the devaluation in action. Someone in the GE earlier said that they had 98 Runecrafting. My immediate thought was, 'I wonder if that was legit or bought.' I didn't say it aloud, but someone else did. I watched the Runecrafter have to justify their levels, when just a week ago, they would have been held in immediate high esteem. Incidents like that are going to become endemic, aren't they? It bothers me, but what's worse is that the last bastion of merit, in my life, has now been sold out. The old lie that hard work equates a great and stable future has never panned out in real life. it did in Runescape. Putting my life on hold to gain my MA never did pay off in the promised riches. Standing at a bank for hours, grinding longbows actually did get me the fletching levels. I've stood by and watched nepotism and middle class money promote people, with less experience and fair fewer qualifications, above my head. I've never seen anyone shoot ahead in Herblore or Crafting without putting the hours in. I've had to put up with being patronised and presented with piles of extra paperwork, because I had the affrontery to be deaf in the Job Centre. But in Runescape, all things were equal. All avatars started the same. All banks were made or broken according to a player's choices. All monsters were defeated on a player's merit and skill. Luck only played the smallest role and that was only beating an algorithm, not divine intervention. Then Jagex sold us out too. Real life money made it into the game with sanction. They changed the rules and the terms and conditions right in front of our eyes; and didn't even have the decency to announce it. Our egalitarian principles turned out to be so cheap that 110k people still played the game, while only 15,000 of them registered their complaint on the forums. Only 18 sought out places like Develop, where just two months ago, Mark Gerhard rushed to contextualise a damning story. They're reading there and taking note. Only one has volunteered to take a 7k strong petition into the very offices of Insight Venture Partners. It feels like game over. This week has broken my heart. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand- How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep- while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream? Edgar Allan Poe .
  8. http://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/q70ec/the_second_bot_nuke_is_needed_now/ Things like this are interesting. Jagex has consistently commited to fighting bots since the nuke. They've been updating quietly, without flourish, but bots are popping up. Lots of people immediately say that this shows Jagex are in a losing race, that they can't win, and that botters will always be one step ahead. They're wrong. Something like the bot nuke shows that's wrong. Bot makers were out for months. They were on the back foot. That hadn't happened before. Jagex are cracking on with Optimus. They're working hard, they're carrying on, but the above link is still a problem. Bot makers can update constantly, and it's obvious that Jagex find that more difficult to do. They're doing well, but it's difficult. So what's the solution? More staff, more money? I don't think so. There'll come a point where all Jagex can do is wait and see what botters come up with before they respond, and that means that they can't do that much. Equally, it's far more important for Jagex to rehabilitate botters (IMO) than ban them. You want a dedicated userbase who understand the problems associated with botting and don't want that in the game and you also can't ban every player. Apart from anything else, it's ruinously expensive. Jagex can't run the game, let alone fight bots and release updates, without money. Bot makers are just as commited to making bots as Jagex are to breaking them, so the solution has to be different: the community needs to be able to help. Ultimately, they are the ones who this botting problem really impacts: for Jagex botting will only hurt in the long term, but for the player, it hits them hard immediately right where it shouldn't. All of a sudden commodities go up and down, fluctuating in confusing ways, until basic money makers can't be used any more. Green dragons cease to be profitable as the spots are flooded: red chinchompas are no longer as expensive as they might be and are hard to get: herbs go down in price as they flood in from the sorcerresses' garden. If I get the chance, I'll try to make lots of money and buy lots of chinchompas, but money making for me will still be hurt because bots are more efficient than I am and they flood me out. Where am I going with this? The solution. We need a community wing against bots, not just a Jagex one. We need to instill an ethic in players that it is worth their time to go and report bots. Finally, we need to make reporting bots more possible. Random events are designed to catch bots. In my opinion, they are where Jagex should focus a whole load of attention, releasing new randoms and reconfiguring old ones. They have done that recently to combat colour bots, but they still have a problem: once a bot is stuck in there, it doesn't move. It can't be seen, and it can't be reported. 1. Add viewing galleries to random events so that players can report stuck bots. The second problem is that commonly botted areas are often hidden away from the average runescaper, so that a botting problem is hard to see. How many players notice that there are bots in South-East Al Kharid? How many of you regularly visit Turoths if you don't get them as slayer tasks? When was the last time you hunted chinchompas, or slayed green dragons in the chaos tunnels? All of these are botting volcanoes, with eruptions of automated players, but because they're quite far away from player hubs and sometimes underground or on a seperate plane, they aren't too noticeable. Here's an idea: why don't we reward players that consistently manage to report bots that later get banned? Jagex could keep records of what players report who, and whether they were later banned. If a player consistently does this, they should be rewarded: loyalty points would be a great way to implement this with little development time involved. Report 50 genuine bots? 1000 loyalty points. Why are they loyalty points? You're being loyal to the game by helping keep it free of rulebreakers. In order to prevent abuse, you'd probably end up needing a few tweaks: if you're the only person to report one bot, it might get more points, for example, to stop people crowding around one single, simple area. 2. Reward players with loyalty points for reporting bots that are later banned. Finally, bots need to be targeted at where they are. I have been to green dragons and the summer garden regularly, and I have not seen these areas being updated in a way that might target bots themselves. The wilderness was graphically updated, but what if we could focus on the jungles, the dragon's drops, the sorcerresses' herbs? What if we could implement things here to deliberately confuse bots regularly, a la LRC portal? I can't imagine this takes vast amounts of time, but it would really help! 3. Target bots specifically at their areas much more often. Well, those are my suggestions for getting rid of the bots with more than just game engine updates. In my opinion, they'd add huge benefits to the community-led fight against the bots with minimal Jagex time taken up: sure, it would take some time, but not nearly as long as the bot nuke! Things like this are simple but can be hugely effective, allowing far more people to take part. Besides, the game engine team is already really busy with the FPS updates, so things like this could help take the weight off their back. I'd love to know what you think! ~Helm Lardar~
  9. I fancy giving you my opinions on the BTS. It'll serve as an interesting record against how things actually turned out. Clan fealty: Capes! Moarrr capes! Hopefully they'll have the clan symbols on them and look better than the current clan capes: if they don't, I'm not sure what Jagex was thinking. XP lamps could be interesting: as with anything, Jagex will need to make sure you can't actually train a skill with them, although the weekly cap will stop that. I'm pretty sure dominion tower could easily become the new effigies with stronger gear, especially since Jagex called it 'competitive'. Most likely the xp lamps will be unusable except in citadel skills, which will make it a bit dull. I don't know how they'll improve the skill plots, as they seem fairly straightforward to me. Bonus XP Weekend: we know how these work and what will happen. Perhaps the most important thing to take away is don't try to merchant, because everyone tries to and that doesn't help at all. The good merchants were stockpiling supplies before and probably sold their stuff to newb investors already. I might buy some chinchompas if the price is low enough. Come to think of it, I won't be there. And I won't miss much either, so I won't worry. Player armour: woohoo! Armadyl looks fantastic, with wings and stuff tacked on, so I'd expect to see all the treasure trail stuff to increase in epicness and therefore worth-buying ness. Loyalty shop: that should be nice, I'm getting plenty of points a month so hopefully they'll be good fun. I still don't understand why people adore Jack of Trades so much: sure 7k xp a day is nice, but it's not as nice as, say, not needing to bring food to monsters, which Vampyrism can do for me on an easy task. New emotes might be nice, as I like having infernal power. Not really sure how much more like an elf we could look: the only difference is pointy ears, as mourners and elves in the camp are the same height. In other words, keep an eye out for new media images of an updated tirranwn sometime. Werewolves should be good, though. Hopefully there's a bit more to it than that. New Bolts: misread this as a new anti-bot update and was dissapointed. The 'bloodwood tree', really? You don't have enough trees so you'll make yet another unique one? Look, just put them into the shafts made out of magic wood or whatever. Presumably they'll be worthwhile, except they might not be because of enchantments. Whatever, it could be a nice money maker if they're untradeable, although I think that's unlikely. How are potion flasks doing? How much profit is that a day? Is it worth the cost of the crafting quickly? Gnome update: Nice to see they're finally putting their gnome environments in game, but what's this about the new NPCs? Last I checked, they had been updated recently! Maybe they just mean more than one colour (green) for the citizens: I can't imagine any need whatsoever for new chatheads and full new models, as they've already established a style that fits the rest of 'new RS' and uses the fancy graphics while being sufficiently unique. Transport and Navigation: Why? It's not hard to get around gielinor! You want to teleport? Train magic! You're a pure? Jagex doesn't want you to limit yourself, as runescape is deliberately class-less! They'll fix that sometime! They said so at runefest that they'd be encouraging defence training! Gielinor is already easily navigable, so I cannot understand why there is a need for this except from some Mod who is new to the game and doesn't understand the sheer number of different teleport abilities. If I want to get to lunar isle, for example, I have several options: a free lyre teleport to relleka, a paid lyre teleport to relleka, a fairy ring teleport to east of relleka, a ring of wealth teleport to miscellania to relleka port, a seal of passage teleport to lunar isle, a home teleport to lunar isle on lunars, a wicked hood teleport to the astral altar, my own runed teleport to lunar isle, and someone else's group teleport to lunar isle. That makes 9 teleports to lunar isle. I cannot imagine that this will add anything new or helpful, except remove on strong incentive to train magic. Besides, you need a good magic level to get to lunar isle anyway, and once you get there you have a free teleport on a necklace that you can replace in relleka, a city that is as easy to get to. Morytania tasks: I don't use varrock armour, and I probably won't use these. Those two slots are simply more useful for other items, especially while in dangerous morytania. More trekking rewards? Not really interested as trekking rewards enough and I don't need to go there. Half barrows drain? It would be relevant if I did barrows. More mushrooms? I can't farm them. Morytania is a very high level area and I barely have a reason to go there. These legs won't change anything. Machinima contest: sounds nice. ~Helm Lardar~
  10. I've often found that the ranged skill tends to be undesirable. Melee is cheap and useful and you can get fast xp for very little money. Magic is expensive, but incredibly powerful, and it's also got a whole host of non-combat uses, largely teleports. Ranged is a slow skill that you train at medium cost. It's got some rewards, largely things that defend well against magic, but for the most part it's not particularly easy or fun to train. With that said, at high levels it's very useful: I once asked the collective rogue's den what was a more useful 99: magic or ranged? Without a doubt, they replied that it was the latter: apparently with 99 you can "make bank" at armadyl. With Hati paws, I thought it was an ideal time to train ranged. I headed to Wallasakis with a friend. We both died horrible, horrible deaths. It was fun, because I learned something and it was a shared experience, but...it wasn't a good way to train. Instead, I decided I'd finally look properly into chinchompas, a subject I was relatively unfamiliar with. Red chinchompas are fat, exploding guinea pigs that you can catch in the western jungles south of the Feldip hills. You throw them. They hit multiple enemies. They do good damage. You get good xp. I'd tried them once before, buying around 2000 chinchompas for around 500k. I think. I'm a little hazy here, because that sounds too good to be true. Nowadays, 500 chinchompas costs 700k. Anyway, I headed to the mummies in the chaos tunnels and there was a player on every world I visited, so I headed to a different one. This was a german world. I logged in. I lagged horrendously. I could not activate my prayer. I died. I headed back to pick up my prayer potions and lost gear, but I couldn't recoup my investment, the chinchompas: those little things run away when you die, in a bid for freedom. Perhaps they all got eaten by Dagganoths or taken away by Zamorakians for experimentation. I really don't know, but I know I lost at least 500k and it put me off chinchompas because losing stuff which you can't afford sucks. Exhibit A: a Skeletal Monkey. Exhibit B: a Red Chinchompa, equipped. Exhibit C: a bot, hunting chinchompas. Not there? That'll be why chinchompas are so expensive. Anyway, nowadays with Hati paws I thought that I should train ranged. Wallasakis didn't work. Bandos' throne room, which I may cover in another blog, was poor ranged experience but fairly good money. I needed something new, and I decided to try red chinchompas in another location, ape atoll. Ape atoll is generally considered to be better experience but slightly more expensive as the monkey skeletons don't drop the various expensive things mummies do. However, given the cost of chinchompas currently anyway, this is a false economy: you already gain less xp per chinchompa at mummies, and you'll also gain less xp per hour because you have to lure the mummies and pick up valuable things, etc. Monkeys are simple: they drop nothing. Not even bones. They're undead, so in a flash of creativity from the Jagex team (something that is remarkably prominent on ape atoll) their bones transmogrify back into their dangerous selves. Some say you should never chin before 75 ranged, as it's poor xp. To them I say, you're wrong! Chinchompas are fantastic experience before 75 ranged, and at 65 ranged I was decimating the skeletons. Sure, I wasn't getting 400k xp/hr (which is very much possible at higher levels) but I was getting perhaps 200? The levels are vastly, vastly quicker to gain lower down as well, which means that you level faster. If I want to spend money on ranged, no other option is going to be as effective, and frankly all this boils down to is a debate of whether chinchompas are a waste of money generally. They're not. That's spoiled the story, hasn't it? Anyway, I went into ape atoll through the fairy ring, down the log, across the bamboo bars, swung along the vine, and exited the gate to the sound of the monkey chief guard screaming "open the gate! a monkey wishes to pass!" without a monkeyspeak amulet. It's a bit odd. "Ook aah ooh ah! Ah OOK OOK ah ook ahh!". The tunnels are deep and twisting, but when I got there I started killing the things. I ran out of food and antipoison. A ring of life teleported me out as I was slowly dying and I might have been silly enough to stay for a bit longer. 71 lp is not a good time to stay. I bought more rings of life and went back. This time there still wasn't anyone at the big corner. I started killing things in a wildly inefficient way, fanning the skeletons around me so that they would respawn. Protip: they'll respawn even if they're under something. A mage turned up, and started hitting the things too! I would have been annoyed, but I couldn't: he was a genuinely nice guy and showed me some key ways to train more effectively. Largely speaking: -Once you've attracted them all, stand under one of the roof slabs, *here* (it's a 1 square crevice in the rock where they can only attack from one side). This stops the roof from crumbling onto you so you won't take damage. -They'll pile up nicely on top of each other. This is a really effective method for training magic too. -When they respawn in odd places, step 3 steps out, wait, and then go back in. Fast and simple way to restore maximum xp. Oh by the way, I suppose it's worth mentioning that I was using red dragonhide, archer helm, eagle eye prayer and a ranged potion to augment my training. I thought it was well worth the extra cost, as I hit far more often with the latter two on. I might look into an aura for ranged (ie something different from Vampyrism) if they're particularly effective. I learned plenty of useful things and then ran out of chinchompas. I went back for more. I got 69 ranged (from 66 just an hour ago). I heard the cry of 'dinner', so I ran up the tunnel and turned into a monkey before logging out. Next time I log on I'll get 70 ranged, and then perhaps further down the line I'll be able to buy more chinchompas and get 75, 80, whatever. It's a really fun way to train! ~Helm Lardar~
  11. The longboat gently dipped in the opalescent waters of the North Sea, gently moored against a rock on the edge of Waterbirth Island. Her lonely mountain stood proud against the grey sky, a solitary bush on its slope the only sign of perpetuating life here. As a friend and I walked towards the beckoning entrance of the cave, rocks sprouted legs and scuttled away, eager to avoid confrontation and potential eviction from their current homes. A friend -let's call him J- and I had decided to try out a new method of training ranged: a method he'd heard of on RS Wiki. It was to be an ill fated trip, but at the time we were perfectly happy and had a nice idea of how things would go. The plan was to hunt Wallasakis; a kind of mage walrus, with our crossbows and pray to protect ourselves, using a cannon to speed things up further and lootsharing drops. Into the disturbingly mouth-shaped entrance we went, down and down the stairs until we were almost under the sea itself. The cave was dripping with an ethereal blue glow: we didn't need any light sources here, although nothing hinted as to why not. Dagganoths: these northern variants on the common Jadinko were aggressive and eager for blood. We headed past them as they slowly began to wake up, our armour protecting us from the worst blows as we reached the first door. Simple enough, two pressure plates were stood on and the door opened with a curious fan-like rotating mechanism. The walruses were here most prominently, but we soon realised a problem: while in great number, they were in single combat and retreated far too quickly once damaged to make it possible to ever kill many at all. This wasn't the great ranged xp we'd heard of! In desperation, we moved further into the cavern and I got out a map. There should be more Wallasakis at sub level 4 or 5. Sub level 6, of course, contained the deadly Dagganoth Kings, so we had to be careful about how we approached the targets. Exhibit A: A Wallasaki, native to the island. Exhibit B: A Dagganoth, native to goodness knows where. First were a second series of doors: a bewildering metre-high obstacle blocked our progress. After some research, we realised we needed more help around the door, but another person popped through and quickly unlocked it for us without any prompting whatsoever! Down that strange metal labber we climbed, down and down, until we reached Dagganoths. Where next? Along and down and along and up and through this tight corridor...to a distinctly smaller, multi combat spawn of 4 wallasakis. We killed them and continued: lootshare worked, although this group wouldn't really help us. I found a fremmenik, killing youngling monsters and asking for more armour and weaponry in return for sharks, an offer I could not take him up on. J dashed down a ladder and I followed him along. A dead end! We were out of food and almost out of prayer. Lost in the spiralling, twisted depths of the dungeon, I ran back up the ladder to where I could protect myself from the twin ranged and melee attacks of the dagganoths, but J idled slightly too long and was caught in the back by a lizard's throwing spine. Help me, his spirit cried. Bless my grave! I jumped off the ledge, rushed to his Angel of Death, and prayed to it before succumbing to my wounds. Panic, as we respawned, was the reigning factor: I grabbed some sharks and armour and headed straight back down. Yet more delay as we went to a friends chat for help (burstinglobs), waited to get the door open, and my grave collapsed. I was stunned, and yet J's was still there, and he ran down only to die again, having only a falador medium shield as his protection against the waves of the undying dagganoth. Having forgotten to bring any prayer potions, I died shortly after as I could only eat sharks just fast enough to cover one combat style and had not brought a teleport. J's stuff was gone, and so was mine. My last few words? By PM: "Magic Walruses was a terrible, terrible idea. We are never going to Waterbirth again." His quiet, PM'ed response: "Agreed." ~Helm Lardar~
  12. Here's something I noticed recently. Clothing shops and cosmetic, no-stat items in general suck. They're terrible! They're either expensive and useless, or cheap and useless. It's not because they all look bad. You've obviously got a range of ideas, from fremmenik shirts (eh...) to ceremonial robes (ooh...eh). It's actually because instead of having something useful, you're stuck with something that has no stats and is no use, and you can't put anything on top. Many of the member's loyalty programme outfits look amazing! I still won't buy them, though, because...if I want to use the full set, I have to sacrifice a headband, a top if I need to wear one, legs, boots, and so on. I won't wear them, and I won't buy them, because to look good they take up slots and...well, that's sort of it. They just take up lots of space, they feel like you're wearing armour, but you aren't. Poor beef, but here's a sweet solution: what if every clothing shop was a clothing shop? Like Thessalia's. You go to a shop, they sell clothes, capes, hats, boots, whatever. You can go into an interface and select the clothes you want to wear by default from there! I can go to Yrsa, and decide to wear fremmenik shirts, gloves, capes automatically! I can go to that place in Canifis, and have a teal hat by default! I can go to Xuan, and wear Saxon clothing when I'm not wearing anything else! I like that idea, but I'm not sure I can explain why I like that idea so much. In any case, I think it would mean that I would (almost always) be wearing unusual clothing, not Thessalia's standard, and that would be a good thing. You'd go to unusual places to get fancy new default gear. What do you think, people? ~Helm Lardar~
  13. I said a while ago someone should make this. Fairly well done, in my opinion. ~Helm Lardar~
  14. Well, I've been training agility here for the past couple days, and I think I've made pretty good progress (thanks to Skoll boots). Over the last two days I've been able to get through about 350k exp and I am only about 68% through the boots - I'll be almost done with my goal of 87 Agility for effigies (with +10 citadel boost). I stopped tonight with about 100k exp to go until 85, which shouldn't take me too long tomorrow. Then I can finally move onto Advanced Barbarian and start to work on the Agile Top/Frem Elite task. Well, I did get 84 here yesterday (or today; don't remember which): After 85 though I'll probably take a break from agility and do some woodcutting. New semester starts tomorrow and usually the teachers give you a fair amount of homework that first week. Most of my classes are the same from last semester, except I am changing religion classes (Christian Themes in Literature to now Philosophy) as well as Psychology to Intermediate Acting. Should be an easier semester than first, since I don't have all my harder classes piled into the A-day schedule anymore. Well, I'm still trying to get used to this blogging thing, but I'll try to post something every few days or so. You can also follow me on twitter if you want (@DimosLog), which will pretty much just you know when I'm doing something really boring, or in Calculus (which falls under the first category, but oh well). ~Dimos
  15. Well, with the semi-closing of my log in the Runescape Skill Logs section, I will be moving most of my info regarding Runescape (or really all the games I play, which is Minecraft, and err... Runescape) to a blog format. I might even also post some entries that actually have content on them. Also, over Christmas I got myself a nice new scanner, so I think I'll be also posting some of my sketches that I do. Pencil sketching is really the only art-like thing I am semi-competent at. Oh, and also expect entries that make no sense at all. So... yeah... I'm kinda new to this whole blogging thing - definitely a different format from the template I could just use for my log. So since this is the first post in the reformed Dimos' Log to Something, I'm just going to set out some goals I have (it is a bit of a repeat from what I said in my closing post of my log). I am focusing on mostly afk goals right now, so I can focus on Minecraft/homework while I get through them. So, here they are: -99 Woodcutting - easily afk-able and I'm at 96 already so that shouldn't take too long to get through. -Monkfish to 90 Fishing, and then Rocks to 99 - may not get up completely to this one, but I'll try. It should also get me some much-needed cash for when I go back into playing full-scale. -Enough mining concentrated gold to get 96/99 Smithing (for effigies and the cape) - not as afk as some of the other goals, but smithing definately is. Finally, if I get around to it 99 Mining would be cool too. And of course, keep up running the citadel in order to reach tier 7 in the coming weeks, and beautify is for the greater glory of Sal's Realm! :P So, that's my first post of the new year. ~Dimos
  16. A frivolous question, you might think, first written by the famed khazard treasure hunter and scholar Movario in his research notes while pursuing the Stone of Jas. Is it necessary to ask? No. Is it interesting to ask? Yes. You see, to ask this question about Guthix asks a profound question about the nature of his godhood, his powers, and his self-proclaimed laws. It's something I'll try to answer now. The first and perhaps most obvious place to start is by looking at Guthix himself: is he powerful enough to do so? Well, let's look at some of his powers: firstly, he is a shapeshifter, able to shift between such variances as a humanoid, a flying metal skull, and a butterfly. He's also skilled in magic, opening portals between many realms to allow species such as humans, dwarves, and elves in through different world gates. Third, he's able to twist both land and living to his will, creating his guardians, which have taken much more powerful forms than they originally had and are significant enemies to face. He's also shaped the land, according to Juna, and made Jas' bare and empty plane a liveable and loveable place. However, we can be sure that Guthix has his limitations. He is not shown conclusively to have created much life but instead to have altered it: in common with most gielinorian gods, his strength seems to come from altering the flow of energy rather than creating or destroying it. One might argue that the creation of life is just that, but it seems to be something that is impossible for most gods. Guthix is not most gods: most people think he is the most powerful, powerful beyond all measure, but it seems that this may not be the case. In one of the most interesting stories of lore in the game, the Ghostly Robes miniquest has Viggora describing Zaros thus: "The Empty Lord was a powerful god, stronger than any of the others awake at the time, possibly even as strong as Guthix is, and Zamorak was but a mortal." (As a side note, many make an innacurate claim that Lucien is practically a god towards the end of While Guthix Sleeps. This is not the case, as even Zamorak after obtaining the same artefacts as Lucien did not gain true power until he had defeated Zaros and obtained some of his power). Now, Zaros was not known for being the most powerful being in the known universe, unlike Guthix, and yet it seems that beforehand, they were regarded as the same. Zaros was extremely powerful, hints of which can be found in his curses and magicks given to the majharrat, and yet we do not think of him in Guthixian terms: that may be the result of the God Wars more than anything else. I digress, Guthix was still extremely powerful as a shape-changer and Zaros at this time had invested much of his power in his Majharrat servants, which served to his disadvantage fighting Zamorak. As a result, it is possible that Viggora means his sum power was equal to Guthix: much like a total wealth where some of it is stored in items, not all the power is immediately accessible. Guthix was also augmented with the Stone of Jas, an object that would augment the powers of any god. Perhaps Guthix used this for more than merely creating runestones, also using it to shape the world. Now, consider the lips of Guthix, and we can see that perhaps without artefacts Guthix may not be so strong. Does Guthix have the power to drink the oceans dry? Possibly, possibly not. To answer this question properly, we need to look at more than just his power. Would Guthix have the will to drink the oceans dry? Well, Guthix is the protector of balance. He is sworn to not change the world and preserve life as much as possible in order to keep tension in Gielinor, and he will not break his vow except for one reason: the violation of the edicts of guthix and his subsequent awakening by his followers, in which case Guthix would remake the world as it has never been before. Is this plausible? It's hinted in the Darkness of Hallowvale that King Roald leading an army to fight the Vampyres would be a violation of these edicts, but in my opinion that is false: Aeonsig Rasipher has several reasons for not wanting a war with Morytania and so does King Roald: expense, difficulty, risk of loss of life, potential abandoment by other nations, weakness to other dangerous forces, and the fact that the river salve works as a fairly effective barrier to prevent a morytanian invasion on a large scale despite the odd foul creature crossing every now and again. While there is treasure to be found (notably the Salve's holy crystals and the wealth of the vampyres) these disadvantages probably outweigh them until a shift in the political salvation. However, King Roald cannot be seen to refuse humanitarian aid and so the edicts provide a helpful cover. Why do I say that the edicts won't affect it? Well, the edicts primarily concern the gods interacting with Gielinor, and say very little about actual warfare. While a Morytanian war would result in much death, it wouldn't necessarily change the balance of things much: the individual power of the vampyres and werewolves would probably result in a rough stalemate, and crucially it wouldn't result in much more power for any particular god: the Vampyres have long since abandoned Zamorak since his banishment, and the Kingdom of Misthalin is to corrupt and weak to truly instil Saradomin's might in Morytania. As a result, I can't see anything dramatic happening that will cause the edicts to be activated in the next few thousand years. Even the return of Zaros is talked of by Juna as something to restore balance, and something that will also combat any possible return of Zamorak under the Dark Elves, the Gnomes, the Chaos Dwarves or the Majharrat, many of whom might choose to join Zaros anyway especially given he has retained a complement of his most powerful followers Would Guthix have a reason to drink the oceans dry anytime soon? Probably not. The final question to ask ourselves is of the oceans themselves: how big are they, and what could Guthix do with the water? The oceans are vast and surround gielinor completely. Even taking into account the idea that we have more than one sea, simply the ring of water surrounding our large continents prevents any idea of the scale being small. The oceans are deep enough to hold rocktails, cavefish, manta rays, sharks, sea turtles and other unusual specimens that would find coexistence difficult: as a result, it is clearly large enough to support different variants of life comfortably without them intruding on each other. The existence of particularly deep fish, ie rocktails and cavefish, also hints that there would be particularly tough chasms. To drink implies that Guthix would not be allowed to simply displace the water into another realm, something that would probably be possible for him. As a result, it seems clear that Guthix would need a kind of stomach to place the water in. While the largest vision of his floating metal skull is certainly large and it appears to be his greatest form, it seems unlikely that even a metal skull a kilometre wide could have a stomach of appropriate size to host such oceans while remaining consistent anatomically. Are the oceans small enough to drink dry? Unlikely. "I wonder if Guthix's lips could drink the oceans dry? Foolish thoughts - on to research." In conclusion, Movario is correct: the idea of Guthix's lips drinking the oceans dry is foolish. Guthix would be unable to for three reasons: firstly, that his power is far more suited to displacing or changing water than removing it altogether, and it is unclear whether Jas' plane had water already in it: secondly, that it would be outside of his nature as guardian of balance to do so when no serious violation of his edicts is to occur soon, and finally that the depth and breadth of the oceans shows them to be unassailable for even the largest imaginable form of Guthix that is consistent with current lore. ~Helm Lardar~
  17. Probably the coolest possible way to get max cape. Seriously. There aren't many cool ways to play runescape, but this is one of them: ~Helm Lardar~
  18. The smithing skill involves the melting down of ore and coal into metal bars and then creating weapons, tools, and armour. These are used to protect the adventurer, help him fight, and help him perform other skill related tasks. Smithing has a consistent level up table to 99 and is therefore arguably one of the most complete skills. In addition to its normal armour creation and bar creation functions, smithing also allows the adventurer to pay an NPC less to repair the adventurer's high level armour. Unfortunately, smithing is one of the least useful skills in the game. Although it has received its fair share of content over the years, including minigames such as the Blast Furnace and training areas such as the Artisan's Workshop it fails to deliver any reward other than a higher level in the skill itself. Smithing's core activity, the creation of objects, normally loses money, and as this is the main method of training smithing it means that the skill is not as profitable as it would be in the real world. Although smithing has been integrated into several diaries and quests, requiring the adventurer to train it for reasons outside its own merits, this does not change its useless position: every skill requires some training in order to unlock the best diary rewards: for example, the most useless skill, firemaking, must be trained to 75 to gain an enhanced excalibur, a sword that is useful for everyday free rechargeable healing and therefore has an important role to play in questing, the slayer skill, and combat as a whole. Many ideas have been suggested to 'fix' smithing, many on this blog, but in truth training smithing is not an issue: it is fairly simple and practical to train, and while this training may be expensive it is the lack of any reward for training the skill that makes it unfulfiling, not the cost itself. There are several possible high level rewards: new and extra additions to armour, sharper weapons, or even combinations of the two: what about a shield that rebounds damage, for example, or a sword weighted to defend as much as attack? The truth, however, is that Jagex implemented the perfect high level updates for smithing months ago and simply failed to pick up on their missed opportunity. As pointed out at the beginning, smithing is the production of metal and the use of it to provide adventuring gear. But what about the repair of items? That clearly has a role in smithing, and it's one that thus far has been taken care of by allowing players a slight discount on a weird money sink. Let's clarify that last sentence: to repair degrading armour, players take the failed armour peice to an NPC or a stand in their house and pay a certain number of coins to have this thing repaired. Some coins are discounted for a high smithing level, but this in no way manages to compensate for the expense of a high smithing level that would actually make a difference unless that same gear is going to be repaired far more times than actually happens. Let's go back to when smithing should have recieved an update it deserved. Almost 7 years ago, the Barrows were released. With them came a new tier of level 70 armour and weapons, the best runescape had ever seen. These offered unparalleled defensive and offensive capability that has only recently begun to be challenged in many categories, so to balance it Jagex implemented a repair mechanism: barrows armour would degrade and would necessitate a little money spent in a shop every now and then. Almost 2 years ago now, Dungeoneering was released. One of the higher level rewards for training the skill (hey, this skill has rewards for training it!) was a new set of level 80 shields and weapons. They were made of a strange new metal, nicknamed 'chaotic' and degraded: they have to be recharged at a shop run by an NPC. 1 Year ago, the nex section of the God Wars Dungeon was released. Players could gain a new set of excellent armour: Torva, Pernix, and Virtus were the best armours ever known. They degraded, and had to be recharged with coins at an NPC or one's house. Why, Jagex? Why? What possible relation do coins have to an armour stand? Why does that thing want them? How is bob more skilled at smithing than a level 85 smith? What does tindal merchant do that makes him so marvellous at repairing wondrous 2nd age armour that hasn't been seen for millenia? Can he even smith rune? Isn't his job simply buying rusty swords and cleaning them? The most obvious possible use for a high smithing level would be to make it necessary to repair special, degradeable armours that were unusually powerful. As a result, at a high attack and defence level, you would need to get your smithing up too. Not so much that it's pointless, as happened initially (nobody smiths rune to wear it as an armour) but at the appropriate level for other skills: level 70 smithing for barrows, level 80 for chaotic, level 85 for nex. Let's briefly outline how it works using the concept of a torva platebody. I own a torva platebody, the finest chestplate in game, and notice that it has degraded. After entering the zaros section of the god wars dungeon, I buy some enchanted metal and cloth from Ashuelot Reis, an NPC there who might have a stockpile (remember, Jagex still needs a money sink: of course the special materials would be tradeable on the GE and indeed stockpilable). I then take these materials and the platebody to a smithy. I then use the armour and the materials on an anvil to create a fully repaired platebody. That's how it should work with all armour repairing. You buy material, you smith it yourself, you need a smithing level. This would be applied to future updates as well: for example, when Jagex release a level 90 or 95 set of armour and weapons they will make those require smithing to repair too. Now, despite this advantage of actually making smithing worthwhile (you can still trade in uncharged variants if you don't have the level, remember), some people would think of this as a bit of a shock. But what else are you going to add to the smithing skill that won't be utterly contrived, and why should you spit at the perfect content for high level smithing when the change is there to be made. Initially, some people would not have the right smithing level to maintain their armour. The barrows people would suck it up and trade armour on the ge for recharging in the short term, while getting better smithing so that they can do it conveniently. The higher levels would know how to train a skill, suck it up, and do it: 80 smithing is not unreachable, after all. Finally: "but then chaotics as a dunge reward will be pointless! they require smithing now too!". Well, they always required attack. Good armour always required defence. As a result, being able to take care of your equipment should (naturally) require a good smithing level. ~Helm Lardar~
  19. Conclusion 1: My bank is a mess Conclusion 2: All buyable skills bought, all this money and no more skills left to pour it in. As you can see I'm 'trying" to get crafting up but I really can't be arced, not fast enough training that. Although I know that I should get it so that I have a useful thing to put effigy assisting xp towards again. 18,2m con xp already which is completely useless :( But I don't have the dedication for training skills, only for making money on the ge. And thus it piles on and on, and I keep wasting it on whatever new and fancy high end item is useful for me, even if it's only marginally useful like the new mage and range boots which I only bought for the circus really <_<. (btw for those wondering, Item number 1 is an Evil Chicken that once killed me in my POH cooked by Dani, the second is a hat I got from Merch Gwyar some time ago)
  20. Whoop Whoop ^_^ the convo: the getting of the cape (payed by Jethraw) and after that some fun in my combat ring :) Thx for comming all Next up: 99 att, str and def and also working on 95 crafting so that I have something again to get up with assists that isn't 99 already
  21. in T - 4 hours in my house in Yanille (3 in the afternoon Central European time)
