    Santa Claus In Edgeville Bank

I was in Edgeville Bank, minding my own business, collecting gold to turn into amulets, the usual. LORD JMTB was also in there, occasionally lighting up as he alched another item in his inventory. The rest of the bank was engaged in its normal bustle and bluster. Suddenly in walked Santa Claus. A little bit of magic was patently about to follow. It was the real Santa Claus. You could tell by the red and white outfit and the beard. You could also tell by the fact that he went over to LORD JMTB and asked why he wasn't using a fire staff in his alching. "I haven't got one," LORD JMTB replied. Santa, who was level 138 and maxed in all of this stats, immediately opened up his bank and presented the alcher with a shiny, new fire staff and 20k air runes. We all sighed a collective, 'awww', and secretly wished that we'd noticed that detail too. LORD JMTB stopped using up so many fire runes and a festive happiness settled over Edgeville. I thought it was worth a shot. "Santa! I've been a good girl! Can I have full Bandos and a pet steel titan please?" There was no response, but Santa had wandered back over to his bank. Seconds later, I was being traded. I naturally started laughing and declined. Bless him! (I'd have to get 99 Summoning before I went near that steel titan pouch for a start.) He laughed too and we got chatting. I should point out that me and Santa go way back, so we had some catching up to do. He finally admitted that he was glad that I declined the trade, as I wasn't getting my paws on his Bandos! That said, he did have a present for me anyway, as I had been so good and all. Awww! <3 He also teled with me to Varrock Square. When I bought my battlestaves off Naff, he did the same, then sold them to me at Naff's price. It was lovely to see the Christmas spirit entering Runescape; and even lovelier to catch up with Santa. (NB Santa isn't quite his real name, but apparently he got some stick on another forum last time I mentioned him here. I was just thrilled to hear that people on another forum are reading my blog!) In the other news, I'm sorry! I kept forgetting to alert you here, when I added more entries to my Runescape Hiscores in Excel guide. I've finished it now, but you can find them all here. Merci beaucoup, Fred, for the banner!
  2. When I was a kid (just under 5 years ago >.> ) venturing out of Lumbridge for the first time, I got lured and lost everything. I remember very well how it felt. Things like that stick with you. I'd been venturing ever further afield, but had only just discovered Ardougne. I was wearing my brand, new mithril armour, which I hadn't long been able to wear. I'd bought it myself, raising the money by killing infidels over in Al-Kharid. It took forever to do that! Then there was the waiting around smiths and banks, trying to buy each individual piece. This was in the days before the GE. We bought from each other or from the general stores; and that was not an instant process. I can't recall precisely how long it took me to save up and complete the set, but I do remember how proud I felt. Mithril felt to me like the pinacle of greatness. Beyond that was only rune and the Barrows stuff. There was no dragon nor God Wars armour in 2007. I'd been a noob and now, well now I was in mithril. (Even today, I will always congratulate any level 30 something clad in mithril. It's a wonderful moment for them and it should be recognised.) This was also before chat channels and easy access to a whole clan for advice. If none of my three friends were on-line, then I was on my own. In those circumstances, the kindness of strangers and the regard of fellow players is very welcome. The day before, I'd found my way as far as Catherby, Camelot and Seer's Village. Someone just slightly higher level than me had gasped as I asked what Castle Wars was. I was eavesdropping on his conversation with a friend and if you don't ask you never know. He was only too eager to hand me my first ring of duelling. He instructed me to meet him at Castle Wars. I would love it I spent a pleasant afternoon there with him. I indeed did love it! Ok, I died a lot, but he told me not to fret on that. That happened at my level, but as I got more accomplished, I'd soon be owning noobs. I grinned, thanked him, then it was nearly time to go. I was in the Castle Wars foyee and asked him how I would get back to Seer's Village. One of the big, scary level 126s came over and told me to put on 'accept aid'. I was in awe. These sort of people didn't speak to the like of me! I did as I was told and there was the pop-up. I clicked it and I was suddenly in Catherby with eyes like saucers. I didn't know they could do things like that! So now it was another day and my exploration had me in Ardy Market. I peered inside all of the buildings and found myself on the map. It was such good fun back then, before you knew where anything was and when each turned corner brought a whole new experience. I was picking up coins and bones, dropped by higher levels, from the floor when I saw cake. I rushed to grab it, because this was food and even intrepid adventurers need cake. I could see where people were stealing it from, so lunged in. Of course, a market guard was soon on my back. I thought I was going to die! But a saviour seemed to come from nowhere. His name was PayneyBoy (these days it's Swisher Guts) and he bore down upon that market guard in a flurry of his sword. I cowered back, snatched from the jaws of death and eating cake like it was going out of fashion. I was so grateful! I gushed out my thanks and PayneyBoy just laughed. We got chatting then. He showed me the delights of the marketplace and explained what other players were doing there. I was in the thieving capital of Gielinor, so much of the activities involved that. Then he said to me that he had something good to show me. I recalled the other stranger, the day before, taking me to Castle Wars and I thought I was going to see something equally great. "Follow me!" Payneyboy told me, so I did. We wove through the streets of Ardougne, past a castle that I hadn't even seen until that moment. I wondered if that was our destination and if the sight was akin to Castle Wars. Payneyboy shook his head, but assured me, "Not far now." We stopped at a lever in a hut. He instructed me to pull it, then he disappeared in a whoosh. I did pull it and got a warning about the Wilderness. I knew nothing about the Wilderness, other than what my friend Audina had said. That was merely, 'don't go there'. I hesitated (wondering if Runescape would crash if I looked the Wilderness up in another browser), but then Payneyboy was back. "Come on!" He urged and I felt nervous of looking like a noob in front of my new friend. I pulled the lever, ignored the message and went on through. There were people at the Deserted Keep. I looked for Payneyboy, but he was standing to one side. The others were all much higher level than both of us. I hurriedly stepped over to be with Payneyboy, but he spoke with one of the higher levels like he knew them. Was I suddenly in a 'grown up' crowd? Payneyboy told me to attack one of the blokes there. He was up in the 70s or 80s and that sounded like pain and instant death to me. "No!" I laughed, thinking this was a joke. "It's for a video." Someone told me. "YouTube." I was nonplussed. I didn't even know that people made Runescape videos then. In response to this incident, Audina later showed me some of the classics, like Mr Roboto and Blue. I also learned about the Falador Massacre from this. But that was all in the near future. Right now, I was in that Deserted Keep with a couple of people urging me to hit this man. Payneyboy piped up, "It's ok. Just hit him." Completely out of my depth and under severe peer pressure, I finally did as I was told. Two things happened at once. The first was that I was skulled, without any concept of what that meant, and the second was that he hit me straight back. I was very close to death and instinct took over. I rushed back to the lever, but Payneyboy screamed, "Merch! No!" I hesitated and he yelled, "Don't pull the lever!" But the higher level was coming after me, so I fled in the opposite direction, up towards the cobwebbed door. Payneyboy was right behind me and so were all those people. I passed an elderly player in default clothing. I knew he was elderly, because he had a long, white beard. He must have sussed immediately what was happening, because he shot off a warning, "No! Not that way!" But my assailants had piled onto me and I died. I was back in Lumbridge with nothing on me. None of the cake nor coins that I'd picked up in Ardy Market. Not my ring of duelling from the day before. Not my prized, beautiful mithril armour. I went into a bit of shock. I didn't even know where to go to find my grave. I quickly PMed Payneyboy to ask what just happened, but he logged off. I found a higher level and gushed out what had happened to me. He said, "Lured LOL." Still logged on, I quickly 'phoned Audina IRL and told her what had happened. She filled in the details. Payneyboy had kept me in Ardy Market long enough to get his PKer clan into the Deserted Keep. They had to get me to make the first hit, or else I would have kept my three most expensive items. In short, I would have retained my mithril. That skull meant I lost everything. Until then, Runescape had been such a lovely game. Stressfree, pleasant, everything a new discovery. This was my first brush with its dark side. There is no coincidence between this happening and my on-going hatred of PKing and the Wilderness. Even more so, my enduring hatred of luring. Which is why the apparent sudden rise in luring in the game again has really got under my skin. Several people have commented that it seems more prevalent than it's been for years. Perhaps the breaking of dice games mean that the scammers have had to fall back upon riskier methods of preying on the ignorant. It happened again last night. On Saturday, there had been such a lovely outpouring of support for Live Mma, but none of us had thought to educate him on the lures of the game too. There seemed no need nor context. He'd lost his stuff through external phishing, not internal lures. So perhaps I shouldn't have then been exposing his good fortune in a well read blog. Last night, a player approached Live Mma in Edgeville and asked him to bring his rune and money into the Wilderness. He would 'double it' for him. Not wanting to appear unknowledgable (and Live Mma is also beating himself up for being greedy), he did as he was told. The result was perhaps more inevitable to us than it was to Live Mma. But he certainly knows every trick in the book now. An impromptu meeting, outside the Warriors Guild, saw the likes of Nezantra, Grief, Fred and Warlock reeling them all off. Even I learned something then. I didn't know about the Lava Titan lure. Live Mma was on the verge of quitting, but he's agreed to give the game another chance. On the bright side, this sudden luring wave has prompted some of the more honourable PKers to set up an anti-luring vigilantee squad. If you're lured, then get the PKer's name and come into Canting. After assessing your case, you might find that vengeance and the return of your stuff happens shortly on. Merci beaucoup, Fred, for the banner!

    Proud Of My Clan Tonight

Cpt_Sparclz, iCross, Live Mma and me I've been fletching in Varrock East Bank and Canting tonight growing increasingly touched at the generosity of my clan. I'm not talking about money here, but in time and the sharing of their knowledge. We've all made mistakes. I'm the last person to judge Live Mma for his error in giving out his Runescape password, because I fell for a phisher just a few weeks ago. Live Mma's account is now secure again. He's set a PIN number and his security questions. He's also learned his lesson the hard way. But that still left him with an empty bank. Moreover, he had lost the mithril armour, which he had spent a week saving up to buy. He asked for nothing. He got it anyway. One by one members of Canting came to us in Varrock East Bank. I'd made Live Mma full mithril from the bars in my bank, but by the time Canting was finished with him, he was in full rune. It was really lovely to watch the conversations. I think that Live Mma was quite overwhelmed and that made me smile. "I'm feeling guilty about taking anything else!" He protested once. I told him what was once told to me, and which I pass on when I can, "Pay it forward. One day you will be in the position to help others rebuild their bank." He assured me that he would, then added, "This is my best day in Runescape so far!" It was great to see him happy again. The second incident came soon on. While iCross was in there, after having presented Live Mma with a rune kiteshield, another player came over and tried to lure him. It was all too complicated for me to follow, but I got the part where all of the PvPers in Canting were on red alert. I also gathered that this player was trying to get iCross's Zammy shield off him. As the anti-lure strategy went on, I watched the details pass by in utter incomprehension. "Do you need me to do anything?" I asked. Kicker assured me that they didn't. They were going to teach this dude a lesson. (Read: Experienced PKers only; Merch stick with the fletching. Works for me!) I watched the conversation going on. The level 99 who was supposed to be meeting iCross turned out to be level 134. Kicker was hiding somewhere in the North with mage... stuff. Some other stuff happened. It pleased iCross and Kicker, and that was the main thing. But what I mostly got from it all was that someone had tried to hurt one of Canting; and Kicker had dropped everything to first advise, then come and protect him. I approved. (Though you're probably best asking those two for the full story. :)) Update: Posted with Live Mma's permission after an unbelievable night: Lilshu, Fred, MsClick and everyone - you are very beautiful people.
  4. I am so annoyed, on behalf of my F2P brothers and sisters, about the Jagex announcement that these players will be removed from the hiscores (16-17-102-63376160). It's gone 3am, so don't expect coherency here. These are just some points off the top of my head. Yes, I am going to rant a bit. This has struck all of the wrong chords with me. I feel desperately sorry for players like Water, who have achieved 200m xp in certain skills solely in F2P. The amount of effort that must have taken is unimaginable to me. He has to work ten times as hard as everyone else, with much fewer in-game rewards. But he doesn't count, as he doesn't pay. No meritocracy there, just the same old filthy lucre which has messed up the real world. I hate anything that relies upon real life finance. Many people in F2P might not be able to afford the membership and they are already penalised enough for that. There is no depth in a competition which only factors in modern players. Without history, we are living in a 2D world. Deleting Zezima is like taking all knowledge of Pele out of football or Leonardo out of art. Yes, we can just as easily watch Matt Jarvis and Damien Hirst, but we never get to see the giants upon whose shoulders they stood. There are ways of making competitiveness 'fresh' without closing the history books; for a start, Jagex could find a way of raising the 200m bar at the top of the hiscores. That really would open things up. Players like Luos Rebbur, Fat Wrecked and The Old Nite will never log on again. Should their memories and achievements be wiped away, simply because other players decided to bot? Many of the questions being 'answered' in the FQA refer to bots without actually addressing the query at hand: 16-17-732-63382107 Just because 90% of botters were in F2P, it doesn't follow that all F2P players are botters. This is like saying that all people with blue eyes should be punished because one person with blue eyes robbed a bank. I feel sick at the blatant attempt to make F2P synonymous with botting. This is how aversion fads begin - whipping up a social scare over a select group. F2P are botters! Make them buy membership! Don't be F2P! Everyone will think you're a botter! And we'll ensure you'll think that, because we'll deflect any discussion or valid query about F2P with an answer about botting! I freaking HATE aversion fads. I did my dissertion about a very notable one in Europe in the 1930s and I was on the receiving end of the anti-smoking one. (And gearing up to be treated with great suspicion in the current bubbling gypsy one.) Aversion fads, wherever they fit in the vast scheme of things, are dangerous. When they're engineered just to make money, then they're downright despicable. I am also staggered by the unfairness of not similiarly erasing all P2P hiscores. This week I have been shocked by how empty the Fishing Guild is, because it's usually full of 100s of bots. It had only three people in it and we were chatting; and anyone who's ever been near the Living Rock Caverns can give testimony to the previous number of bots in there. They've also now gone. Botting patently happened in P2P, but £3.20 a month saves our scores, while F2P can go hang. If F2P was really free, then why are there adverts in there? F2P players are your target advertisement customers. Every bit of revenue gained from those adverts over the game has come from F2P. If Jagex weren't getting revenue from those adverts, then they wouldn't be there. F2P pay their way.
  5. Several people, including myself, are unable to log into worlds 117 or 77 this afternoon. For some players, it began yesterday, as the Dungeoneering Double XP Weekend became active. I was able to log onto it yesterday and this morning, but this afternoon, it locked me out. The Tech Support, in the RSOF, is slowly filling up with people who logged out of either 117 or 77. They have found themselves unable to log back in again. Bit disappointing, when so many people are trying to get into a dungeon. The double xp will be over tomorrow. In the meantime, every other world is fine and accessible. Even dungeons can be done in them, though forming a party to do one is going to be tricky without 117 and 77 to fall back on. Edit: There's been an update on the RSOF: 25-26-598-63372062

    Strangeness In Gielinor

I've just cashed in my penguin points and got 32 instead of the expected 16. Is this me being a nub and forgetting that I didn't cash them in before Cuba? Though I'm fully willing to accept some nubbishness, that kind of behaviour seems unlike me. I usually rush to Chuck the second I'm done, then bask in the lovely XP. I did notice that, while I was away, there was a series of bonus XP events. One of these was to get double on your Diversions and Distractions, but I assumed that it was just for one day only. Is it for the week and that's what happened here? I also understand that these bonuses came as a result of the bot nuking, that Jagex did last week. When I walked back into Canting the other day, that was the first news I was told. Followed by There morosely informing me that there were only 3 people in each world. They must have all been in Canting at the time then. >.> Anyway, as I've wandered around, Gielinor does seem very different. There aren't the crowds mobbing the skilling spots, which is especially evident in the Living Rock Caverns. Moreover, there isn't a secondary crowd of people accusing everyone else of being bots. What do they find to talk about now? :o For all of Jagex's efforts, I did discover one obvious bot though. I've had my suspicions for some time, as he's always there! His continued presense has prompted me to finally speak out. Here he is: He purports to be 99 firemaking, but you only have to be level 2 firemaking before you realise that training it next to a bank is pretty vital. He's faffing around in the middle of a forest, with bunnies hopping everywhere. Health and safety risk much? Not to mention that I have my own crops planted not far away. If he burns them down, then there will be words. >:D

    Remember When You Were Young

I had one of those rare moments last night. I got to see Runescape again through the eyes of a newcomer. Two friends decided to join us, so I rushed to the GE to get them some armour. I was in Skype with both Rainbow Firg and Opaq_Bubbles, as well as Audioworm and Empty Entity. We listened to them go through the quest that replaced Tutorial Island, then enter Lumbridge for the first time. I wasn't actually there to meet the first person out (Rainbow), as I was still stuck in the GE waiting for iron armour sets. I know that was lazy. It would have been easier to just make them! There are so many things that, after nearly five years playing, I take for granted. The unthinking knowledge of how to light a fire or fish for food is just part of it. There's also locations. I can't get lost in Lumbridge anymore, but I remember well when I can. I do think that there's something magical about those first few weeks in Gielinor. Then just getting by and exploring are priority. Each new corner has something magical around it. It's a real adventure, before the competitiveness of levels really kicks in. Back then, you could get a level with a single inventory of whatever you're doing. Rainbow Firg was out first. Empty Entity and I met her at the crossroads in Lumbridge and invited her into Canting. I gave her two sets of iron armour and 50k to start her off, then we took her to the bank in Lumbridge Castle. I'm in two minds about the money. On the one hand, I'm happy to hand it over (and more). On the other, I also recall the sense of achievement, when I'd saved up enough to get things like mithril later on. Was I robbing them of that, by handing it over at the off-set? Opaq_Bubbles arrived next. The process was repeated, though Empty Entity had gone back to whatever it is that he does with herbs. Both ladies donned their armour and clutched their iron skimmies and shields. I could have escorted them around, but I felt that would lose something for them. The solo explorations are what I remember most. I stayed in the world, which was obviously f2p, but let them disappear off into it on their own. It was nice. I've seen some of the videos, where newcomers are met with bots and auto-typers, but they had gone. I didn't see a single auto-typer in the time I was there. I did see a couple of streams of bots in Al-Kharid though. I couldn't think what to put in their way, as my cannon was a member item. Instead, I stood there as on unofficial Lumbridge advice counsellor. Redcrowsley was taken to meet Bob for his free hatchet; FireZach was taken to where shrimps may be fished. Another player asked me if I was a mod, so I explained about the silver crowns before the names of mods when they speak. On the subject of clans, well, Canting's membership rose by four! Sumfin 99 heard, in Canting, about our new members. He arrived by the River Lum, where I was sitting watching Opaq_Bubbles fight spiders. I was over the other side of the river, just sitting down, but when Sumfin said that he was en route, I nipped over to her side, so he could find us. He'd brought gifts for them too. They had higher level scimitars and 100 cooked lobsters each, then it was back to Lumbridge Bank. Simple things like unnoting items had to once be learned. You forget stuff like that. Sumfin stayed on with me. It was lovely. Sumfin, FireZach and I Sumfin and I watch Rainbow Firg fishing Incidentally, Opaq_Bubbles is the artist who created that wonderful picture of me, which you can see in the left-hand column of this blog. Unfortunately, she'd gone for her tea by the time I took the screenshots. I do think it's worth, sometimes, going back to the start and revisiting it as best you can. It gives you a sense of how far you've come and that's always good.

Join My Clan! Join My Clan!

Gielinor seems edged with desperation at the moment, with clan recruitment occurring at every turn. I was in Edgeville Bank last night, just sorting out a bit of soda ash burning, when I observed serious money changing hands. Some rich player was offering hard gp for anyone willing to join his clan and get chopping logs. This was serious cash. 200k for anyone, payable upon joining. He wasn't even asking for demonstrable proof that they'd completed their timber cap for him. Meanwhile, outside the door, someone had his own clan vexilum planted and was reeling off the glories of his PKing comrades. I listened, because I had no real choice in the matter, as he was planted in my soda ash run. They sounded like the best PKing clan in the history of Runescape ever. On the other side of the bank, a third earnest player was promising that his clan had events every single day. "What kind of events?" asked a prospective clan member. I missed the response, as the smithy took me out of earshot, but on my return, he was instructing the new member on how to remove himself from his current clan. A successful pitch then. That was just ten minutes in one location, but it's happening everywhere. You can't move in the GE for vexilums. The barrow boy calling of clan enticements has drowned out the sales pitches for items. I've not seen that happen there before! Each street in every Gielinor town has more people advertising. It's like the foyee of Soul Wars, but extended over the entire map. I am assuming that is just a flash in the pan, at the moment when novelty turns into cold hard log accountancy; but it's quickly getting old. Having said that, Canting is not immune. In fact, Warlock and I descended upon the GE a couple of nights ago and were quickly joined by Deathrole, Alex and Natura Molly. We released literally 100s of clockwork toys, taking it in turns to buy the GE clean of them. At any given time, the floor was covered in spinning dolls, lurching soldiers or scurrying mice. When they ran out, we raw chicken bombed the whole area. In the midst of this, Warlock was repeatedly doing his level 120 dungeoneering master emote, which is guaranteed to draw a crowd. I was doing my questcape emote, which attracted a slightly smaller one. We were giving out green, pointy hats, until there was a vertiable sea of them across the platform. EVeryone was yelling out anything that we thought might make Canting a very seductive clan to join. "Join Canting! The world's most friendly clan!" "Join Canting! We have bloggers! PKers! Skillers! Newcomers! Veterans! Everyone!" "Canting Away! No requirements needed!" "Warlock, emote pl0x!" "Look! Canting has a level 120 dungeoneer!" He got revenge with such things as, "Search Merch Gwyar, then join Canting!" I'll admit to giggling my way through it all. I'm also glad to say that, though we risked the health and safety of anyone picking up raw chicken from the floor, we never lost our dignity. Unlike Sal's Realm clan, who have been reduced to pixel stripteases in order to lure unsuspecting newcomers into their clan. We retained the moral high ground. All of this is leaving me with an unsettled feeling though. It's obvious why it's happening. The bigger/more committed the clan, the more resources you have to build up your citadel. Clans with five members just will not be able to compete in sheer aesthetic glory with the huge ones. Of course, my natural reaction is to go, 'stop competing then', but it's not that simple. Small clans are in danger of being lost completely, as members are attracted into the larger ones. The over-riding temptation is to grab people off the streets and make them chop wood. Canting will survive this, unless absolute catastrophe occurs. We had around 100 members when it started; a figure which has fluctuated between 95 and 110 eversince. We've lost three members to massive clans (well, Sal's), but we've gained a varying amount of new people. Some come, then go again in the next hour. Some come and stay. It will all stabilise soon. But what happens after tomorrow, when the tick passes and the citadel rearranges itself around the fruits of last week's labour? That will be the pivotal point. That will be when less committed members jump ship to the prettier citadels; or when tension truly breaks out. Jagex set a cap of 1000 resource items per person. This means that I can now wander into my citadel and cheerlead whoever is chopping away, but I can't help out anymore. My cap was reached on day one. This is extremely frustrating for me. But even more frustrating is the fact that since day one passed, it's now intensely boring for anyone getting their allocation. They tend to be alone and 1000 logs are noticed far more than when a dozen of us were chatting away. The cap is meant to stop the like of myself (and the others who said that they'd love to carry on) from carrying the rest of the clan. It's meant to force community and collaborative action. It's not doing that at all. Three members have done their maths and realised that Canting isn't going to match the big clans. They've left. Coss has threatened to log out of Runescape and play Minecraft, until the citadel craze is over, if one more person pressures him to chop logs. It's tedious and he is trying to train dungeoneering. The conversations in Canting are all about the citadel, along with who has or hasn't chopped to their cap allowance. I decided to be practical and assume that, if only 16 people reached their 1k logs with most of the week gone, then we would not be able to build to full capacity. We had enough for all of the tier upgrades, a couple of potted plants and, if we were lucky, a weapons rack. We could not go for posh walls. I reduced the order accordingly, which ignited the ire of those who had worked hard on this. A meeting was clearly called for. To recruit or not to recruit? Including Coss (Canting) peer pressured into getting his allocation. To recruit or not to recruit? Now starring Elias Erebus, giving up time in his first day's membership in 4 years to get his allocation. To recruit or not to recruit? Because some of our oldest members are returning to do their part in building our citadel. Missed you Guildwars! Even if I have apparently taken a picture of Ultralisk, who ninjaed on top of you just as I was taking your picture. But you are in the next one! To recruit or not to recruit? Because Ultralisk apparently has nothing better to do, while at Lillantra's IRL house, than to log on and chop wood. To recruit or not to recruit? Surveying what Canting has to offer prospective clan members. We ultimately did decide to have a recruitment drive, hence the clockwork toys and the raw chicken bombing. I don't want Canting members to feel pressured by this, whenever they log on. But neither do I want those who have done their part to feel robbed, because others aren't pulling their weight. I equally don't want people to jump ship, because their labour will create more benefits in a larger clan. I'm also concerned that a sudden and large influx of new recruits will overwhelm Canting. We have an established, laid back and lovely atmosphere in there, what if suddenly dumping crowds of newcomers into it disrupts that environment? And is this fair on anyone, especially our valued F2P members, who, through no fault of their own, are already feeling marginalised? MsClick reckons that I worry too much and true Canters will just stop where they've always been - canting away in a chat channel, while they go about their business, as normal. She's a wise soul is MsClick. I should listen to her more.

    Excruciating

I've been doing a lot of Runecrafting recently, at the ZMI Altar. It's usually something that I enjoy. I'll set aside a day and stick a film on. Part of my monitor will be Runescape and part of it will be a little screen with the film playing. It doesn't take long to get into a rhythm. After a handful of runs, your finger starts to know what it should be clicking and when. It's only when something different happens that you need your undivided attention. It's a little like driving in that respect, though I wouldn't even consider watching a film whilst driving! With your mind firmly entrenched in some storyline, you don't notice the hours passing and the RC xp amassing. Then you reach the end and there's all the lovely gp and xp and the satisfaction of an enjoyable job well done. Except it's not like that anymore. I tend to buy pure ess in lumps of 10k, then go and get my free allocation from Ardy every day. It soon piles up. Unfortunately, you can only get a real rhythm of processing it, if you're in downtime. With the new clan system, everyone knows where I am at any given time. It's not a huge stretch to reason that someone on world 70 is probably at the ZMI altar. I don't think I've been up there yet without at least one person waiting on the track between the teleport spot and the bank, on Lunar, or in the space behind the ZMI altar. They have questions about the running of Canting; or complaints about a fellow member; or a plea to come and do something else, like Dungeoneering. On Sunday, it happened no less than five times. Each time, I'd pause my film and sit down for a chat; or go checking the forums for clarification on an issue. I thought I'd easily get my 13k ess done that day. I managed 6k. This pile off ess isn't new. I initially bought it several weeks ago and filled up my bank to runecraft at ZMI then. I've been living with dozens of books for weeks, with just a little bit of bankspace, as you need a full bank for ZMI. I didn't want to throw it out, because I wanted to finish the run. Each time I'd attempt it, I'd have someone appearing on that route begging me to go Dungeoneering. I want the Dungeoneering xp too, so I went. On Sunday, I was determined to finish this run and reclaim my bankspace. I ended up feeling so guilty about that. Solo runecrafting + being unsociable = bad juju in the new Runescape. Yesterday, I revisited, but this time switched Canting so that I couldn't see the chat. Nevertheless, it still left it so that everyone could a) see that I was on-line and b) guess from the world what I was doing. I had visitors. Apparently there were people in Canting getting upset that I was ignoring them. I also had a visit from BlastJr, which I didn't know about until he'd left. He could see that I was on-line, so he hung around waiting to see if I'd pay attention. I didn't know until he'd left. The whole privacy thing is getting excruciating. We're all living in goldfish bowls and it's ruining the atmosphere of the clan chat. In the old days, anyone in there was wishing to chat or to just chill in the general sociable air of the place. Now they aren't necessarily available to the public. We all need downtime. Runescape used to be the perfect place to get that. The stresses of life piled on, so you'd log in for some mindless clicking and unwinding. Once you were able to breathe again, you'd meander on into Canting with a smile on your face and the willingness to engage with society once more. Not so now. You're in there whether you like it or not, with all of your stresses, woes, PMS, exam fatigue and all of the rest. It's no coincidence, I believe, that these past few weeks have been some of the hottest and most prolonged in-house fighting in the history of Canting. More than half of the people intercepting my runecrafting run were those wishing to talk over an issue concerning another member. Should they leave Canting, because they can no longer stand to be in the same cc? Could I have a word with 'x' because (s)he is bullying me/being a noob/taking a joke too far/always miserable etc etc? Can we not all just go back to the old Canting, because this one is for PKers, not canters? In short, our Runescape time is in a hothouse and tempers will flare accordingly. This isn't reality TV or Category A imprisonment. None of us signed up for 24/7 observation. I've noticed a distinct drop off of people even logging on. I definitely think twice about it. Whereas before I might think, 'oooh, I'll just nip and get my dailies in before tea', now I won't. I'll check another forum or have my downtime reading a book instead. It's called relaxation. That's something increasingly missing from the game just now. Jagex initially put in the inability to leave because 'clan leaders needed to ensure that members weren't skipping events.' I find that disturbing. In the first instance, it's unbelievable that some power hungry leaders would want to control their clan members like this; in the second instance, why on Earth are Jagex even considering catering to these meglamaniacs? Jagex have admitted that they made a mistake. They've apologised on the forums and stated in the clan Q&A that it is now a priority to allow people to appear off-line. Of course, they said that two weeks ago and there's yet no sign at all that it's being implemented. In the meantime, the arguments are growing; the atmosphere is becoming increasingly suffocating; people are feeling ignored, because the only response to needing downtime is to set clan chat so you can't see it, hence a room full of people aren't responding to a cheery 'hello'. In this supposed year of supporting clans, Jagex appear to be doing their level best to destroy them. Canting has been around quite peaceably for about four years. The past four weeks have turned it into a warzone. One of the generals/admins asked me, on Sunday, to clarify the position of their rank in these difficult times. (This after an unknown person amongst them had gone in and deleted the majority of the forum posts, thus putting back the voting for the Deputy Owner for a week.) I have two recommendations. The first is to stop fighting amongst yourself. At least four generals/admins are snarking at each other, hence causing a lot of bad feeling in there. The second is to use all of your skills of diplomacy, compassion and understanding to stop everyone else fighting in there. It's not longer even vaguely fun. As for Jagex, if they could prioritise the implementation of a privacy option, then the pressure would be off and we can all get back to normal. Until then, the whole situation remains excruciating.
  10. Let me introduce Paul Sothern to you. Nip over to the swamp lizards right now, on world 151, and you could probably introduce yourself to him. He's here as an example of some of the infuriating people who appear to have crept out of the woodwork today. Those for whom a few square inches of pixels are worth more than common courtesy, costing, at the most, a small bit of inconvenience. He's not alone. If it was Paul Sothern alone, then you'd just blame the parenting and move on. But they're everywhere! His story first, so that you can see where I'm coming from. The swamp lizard hunting area is packed at the moment. For a start, the like of me are up there, with our nets and ropes, because we want the secondaries and they're a) suddenly very expensive and b) not selling on the GE. However, this isn't too great a problem. There are four clusters of traps on each world. It takes only a short time to fill your inventory, but a long time to bank. I'm one of the faster ones, as I have a Canifis portal in my house, so I glory to Edgeville, teleport to my POH, then portal to Canifis, into the short cut and run across the swamp. Others have the much longer trek across the swamp to Canifis and back. All this means that we can pretty much timeshare the traps. Time it right and while one is banking, the other is hunting. You might not even see each other, but for a running blur leaving, as you're arriving. This was one of the emptier moments. Someone was using the first cluster, but the other three were empty. I chose the second and started stringing up my nets. I had half an inventory full, when Paul Sothern appeared. He didn't carry on walking to the third, he just stood in the middle of my cluster and waited. He waited for so long that I was just about to ask if he was lost, and did he need assistance, when I misclicked a trap. Instead of my net being set up, I just stood next to it for a couple of seconds. That was all the time he needed. He dived in and set up his net on that trap. "...." Said I. Paul Sothern said nothing. One of my remaining two traps pinged into the capture of a swamp lizard. I rushed to collect it. While I was doing so, the other trap collapsed. Paul Sothern was right there. His trap went up in the two seconds that it took me to go over there. I stared in disbelief. I swivelled my screen around to check on areas 3 and 4. They were still empty. "Did you not see me here?" I asked. Paul Sothern said nothing. I know that I should have just collected up my nets and ropes and walked the five squares up to the next area. That was the mature and sensible thing to do. But I was too busy lining up a picture of him, then cropping it and uploading it to Imageshack, so I only needed the one trap anyway. Like I said, if it was just him, then I'd have probably shrugged a que sera sera and got on with my life. However, I've been running into people like this all day. There is a mass panic on to get supplies, especially as the GE prices rise, but should that come at the cost of manners? We're back to the age old: is it a game or is it a competition thing again. I'm still firmly on the side of it being a game. Had Paul Sothern said, 'I'm sorry, but this is my lucky swamp lizard hunting trap cluster and I couldn't possibly move five paces west, would you mind....?' I would have waved a cheery 'bye' and shuffled up to the next empty space. Edited to include Froz3n H3r3, who just did precisely the same thing again: This time, I just moved onto the next cluster, because sometimes it's just not worth it. I'd gone to the swamp lizards from the Heroes' Guild rune rocks. Now if you want to truly witness humanity at its most savage, then try mining rune. For those who haven't got the level yet, let me walk you through this. There aren't a vast amount of rune rocks to mine in Gielinor. Some, like those in level 44 Wilderness, are highly dangerous places to visit. Therefore you have just a few rocks being fought over by high level miners. On top of this, the rune rocks can take around 20 minutes to respawn. Most people hop from world to world to world, just looking for one to stick their pickaxe into. Now imagine that you've waited for 20 minutes, or else hopped through 20-30 worlds, before you find that rock. Then imagine that someone else turns up or is already there. Now can you envisage the level of rudeness. I got called a dirty... 'lady of negotiable affection'... earlier, just for finishing mining rune, as someone arrived on the scene. I had been waiting there for 20 minutes. He'd just popped up in time to see my pickaxe take that final strike to make the rune ore mine. Did I deserve the name? Why did he feel the need to call it me? I mean, water off a duck's back really, but he wasn't alone in that attitude. I heard or experienced it enough to decide to blog about it. Respect, politeness and a willingness to help each other out, have always been more impressive to me than pixel acquisitions. Please remember that there are human beings behind the avatars, even during times of high stress, like the gathering of supplies for bonus xp weekend. Peace out. As a wise woman said to me this morning:

    Looking Back To December 2007

What Would Rose of Sharon Do? (December 10th 2007) Preparing For The End Of An Era (December 14th 2007) Black Monday In Pictures (December 14th 2007) My heart went out of the game back then. I staggered on for about four months, then just dropped off the radar for a year. It wasn't actually planned that I'd do that. Real life things happened and distracted me from a game which had ceased to feel like fun. All of this from a non-PKer. I never entered the Wilderness in those days; at least not unless I had Yuanrang to cling onto. It was the removal of free trade that shattered me. It was the drip-drip of helplessness, when things happened that we used to be able to put right. I still recall now, with shuddering pathos, the time that Pepsimax died in-game. His beloved rune satchel (as much a feature of him as the green hat is to me) was lost. I had one. I could have just handed it straight over, but the initial trade limits were far more restrictive than they are today. There were no extra allowances, even with long-term friends. I couldn't give him the satchel and that made me cry IRL. No fun = no real incentive for other things not to distract me. Then, in 2009, I returned for the Easter event and became drawn back into the game. Slowly, my minutes in there turned into hours. The old addiction was back. Yet it still, to this day, irks me beyond reason when I can't trade freely. I've just taken those pictures. They are both items that have stayed in my bank since 2007, as insurance against the day that Jagex do something about allowing them to be freely traded. They are Pepsimax's rune satchel and Lilshu's shield. Yes, I would like the bankspace back please. And no, I suppose that neither gentlemen care so much about those pixels as they once did. But it's the principle of the thing and a promise that I made to myself back then. I want to give Pepsi his satchel and Lilshu his shield; and I do not want either of them to pay for them in money, items or 'junk'. It was my very first thought, when I read that there was an official 'vote' to bring the Old Wilderness and Free Trade back. Knee-jerk reactions aside, I'm still a little stunned. Not least to discover that I'd already voted before I even knew about the announcement. Apparently there are armies of people and bots gathering names from the hiscores and using them to make numerous votes. You don't even have to be logged in to do it. You just add a name, press 'yes', refresh, add another name. It's like the old carpetbagger voting system that made 18th and 19th century politics so corrupt in the West. In short, not worth the bandwidth its using. Do I want free trade back? Yes, unequivocably. Do I want the GE to stay too? Yes, I do. It's very handy and I'm crap at merchanting. Are the two desires mutually incompatible? Idk. I'm not an economist. But they appear compatible in real life. I can go down to the grocery store/supermarket/market and buy a potato. I can then sell that potato to, say, Egghebrecht for 1m euros. (Well, in theory I could. In practice he might say, GTFO and negotiate a lower price. Or buy his own potato.) The point being that store buying AND free trading can exist quite happily side by side IRL, so why not in Runescape too? Do I want the Old Wilderness back? I hated and feared the old Wildy; but I hate and fear the new Wildy too. So it makes little difference to me. However, I do know that the old Wildy was dear to the hearts of a lot of old friends. If bringing it back puts smiles on their faces, and brings back the like of Henrique, then yes, sign me up. Do I want to see the return of luring? No. This is what frightened me off the Wild in the first place. Do I want to see the return of scamming? No. But doesn't placing the worth of an item in the trade screen knock this off the agenda anyway? Do I wonder what the frig is going on? Yes. I've seen theories ranging from 'bit early for an April Fool's Joke', through to 'they're bringing it back already, they're just warming us up', through to 'it's all a scam to get higher playing figures/membership revenue, in anticipation of the changes, for the close of year account books'. The latter made me bite my lip, until I remembered that the British accountancy year runs from April to April. Bit premature for that then. Then the perennial notion, 'zOMG! Christmas present ftw!' I guess it really is watch this space moment. Edit: Here is what Ali has to say about the PKing view of bringing back the Wild.

    Save The Sabre-toothed Kyatt

I was recently catching butterflies around the Snowy Hunter area, when I noticed something disturbing. The lack of large game available for the sabre-toothed kyatt to prey upon. Yet one look at their physique indicates that they are carnivores built for ambushing something much bigger than themselves. I'm very worried that the sabre-toothed kyatt is on the verge of extinction. I'm not a wildlife expert, though I do have level 88 hunter. I am, however, an historian and I was struck by the similiarity between the sabre-toothed kyatt and another animal, the sabre-toothed tiger. The latter became extinct 10,000 years ago and I'm worried that its cousin, the kyatt, will go the same way. Let me demonstrate: Sabre-toothed kyatt Sabre-toothed tiger As well as physical similarities, there is also the identical nature of their favourite habitats. The sabre-toothed kyatt prefers the snowy areas to the north of the Rellekka region. The sabre-tooth tiger flourished during the last Ice Age. I would like to draw your attention to the legs of both animals. They are very short and stocky. Paleo-forensic evidence tells us that the sabre-toothed tiger did have a massive burst of speed, but only over short distances. They're a little like jaguars or lions in that regard. You will see the large heads and the muscular front part of the body, relative to the less power-bound back part. These are brilliant ambushers. These are cats which sneak up on their prey and then erupt from the landscape. They pounce on their prey and those nine inch, sabre sharp canine teeth puncture the throat of their victim. The tremendous muscular power of their chest and neck crushes down too. Their prey doesn't stand a chance. Let me show you the sabre-toothed tiger in action. This is taken from a BBC wildlife documentary, called 'Prehistoric Park'. Please watch it from 5.35, in order to see the sabre-toothed tiger hunt a toxodon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-KHqal5IFE With the physique of the sabre-toothed kyatt being so similiar, I'm guessing that they hunt in precisely the same way. But there's a problem. The sabre-toothed tiger could only hunt huge prey. These are big enough not to be able to run away so easily. Smaller animals, like humans, usually have more speed and stamina. As the Ice Age receded, the environment changed. Instead of freezing savannahs and plains, we could get forests. These weren't the natural habitat of huge game. You rarely find a buffalo or a cow, for example, in a pine forest. They prefer places where they can wander around grazing. In addition, 10,000 years ago is when human beings started to turn up, bringing with us unusual germs. (There's a theory that that's what wiped out the mammoth in South America.) As animals like the toxodon meandered off somewhere else or died out themselves, the sabre-toothed tiger suddenly had nothing to hunt. They started to starve, then finally became extinct. So I stand in the Snowy Hunter area and look around myself. The butterflies, birds and little kebbits abound. Then there are passing humans. None of us are much good for the sabre-toothed kyatt. We can all out-run or out-fly it. Not to mention the fact that all that stocky, muscular power requires a lot of protein to fuel it. You're not going to get that off a sapphire glacialis butterfly. Where are the herds of bovine that the kyatts should be feeding on? Miles away, in Lumbridge cowpen. I'm strongly suspecting that the people of the town of Rellekka might have hunted them into extinction, or brought germs that the herds couldn't cope with. I was also perturbed to notice that, as you walk west, to the coastline, you'll notice that the snow is melting. By the small boy and his boat, there's no snow at all. The Snowy Hunter area's mini-Ice Age is ending. I naturally went into Canting and mentioned my concerns about the possible impending extinction of the sabre-toothed kyatt. Lillantra reassured me that there are trolls just south of that area. The sabre-toothed kyatt are obviously feeding on them. The trolls are about the right size for their prey, so she does have a point. However, trolls are notably made out of rocks. The distinctive canine teeth of the kyatt are made out of calcium. Nine-inch, thin lengths of calcium. Imagine the crushing power of a kyatt's muscles being brought to bear on calcium forced against granite. I don't think you need to be a geologist or a dentist to work out what would happen next. I think that the trolls are too well protected by their skins for the sabre-toothed kyatt to hunt them. At least if said kyatt wants to remain sabre-toothed. The only prey I could find in the vicinity were the unicorns. I believe that the sabre-toothed kyatts, until now, have been surviving on black unicorns. But these have nearly gone. There are only two or three adults and a lot of foals left. In fact, there appear to be more foals than can surely be accounted for by the number of adults left. I think that many of these foals are orphans. Unless the black unicorns migrate elsewhere (they are thriving in the Wilderness), then they too will soon die out. Either way, the future looks bleak for the sabre-toothed kyatt. It is my belief that the sabre-toothed kyatt is close to extinction. Should we really be hunting it? And is there anything that we can do to save it?

    East Varrock

I was wandering around East Varrock today and spotted something quite perturbing. This has always been a dodgy area. When I was a kid, it was dangerous to get to and dangerous to walk through. Muggers haunted all of the streets. I recall one particularly harrowing occasion, when I had to flee to the cabbage patch and eat greens for my life. All the time, there was a mugger stalking me on the other side of the fence. Really scary, it was. But times change and muggers know that I can one-hit them, so they leave me alone. I'd somehow started believing that this meant that East Varrock was safe for me. I could meander through the crumbling ruins without even taking any armour nor a weapon. As long as I watched for walls falling on me, I'd be fine. Yet I'd missed something that is so blatant, that I can't understand how I haven't seen it before. There's only one guard in that area. He stands at the gate leading to a row of shops, the pub and a rat pit. This guard is in full protective clothing. He wears breathing apparatus. By protective clothing, I don't mean full Bandos and a massive spear. I'm talking about the sort of outfit more usually associated with mourners or adventurers entering the poison wastes of Tirannwn. His full helmet has a visor, with a tube travelling around to the oxygen pack on his back. Even his weapon gives some pause, in the context. It's a halbard. This is someone who, faced with having to engage in combat, really doesn't want to be too close to his assailant. What does he know that we don't know? I looked around for clues amongst the rubble. I started with some nearby collapsed buildings. Here the walls and roof have all gone. Grass covers most of the remaining floors. Mildew climbs the teetering, jagged brickwork. But the tiles that have survived are clean. There are skirting boards that look like someone has just been around with a cloth and some bleach. What's in the air that kills mildew and weeds? Just when the horror was getting too much. I made one last observation. Within a few steps from the guard, in all his protective gear, is a tea stall. The citizens of Varrock have worn a dirt track, in the grass, from the path to the stall. It's evidence about just how popular that tea stall is. Yet the tea is served in open cups. In an area so toxic that the guards use breathing apparatus and the mildew can't grow. It's a bit worrying, that's all.

    Lazy Skills

Many of you might have read Xel's 'Training Skills Without Skilling', particularly since it was picked up by Vaskor, in Runescape Readers' Digest's 'Lazy Skills'. For most people (myself included sometimes), all of the xp that goes into raising 'lazy skills' is a great bonus. Sometimes it can come as a really pleasant surprise, if it's gained in a way that you hadn't realised was happening. But for me, those sneaky bits of xp can be a right royal pain in the proverbial. Here's another viewpoint. No-one is making me train my skills in such a way as to keep them as level as possible. There is no crossbow at my head and no gp reward at the other end. I started out doing it because the person who got me into Runescape did it. I thought that's how you played the game. Then, as years and experience told, I did it because I hate grind. Flitting from one skill to another breaks that up. Finally, I'm doing it because it would be a shame to mess that up now. LOL However, this means that I run into a lot of the same issues as pures. That is that sneaky bits of xp can sometimes make life difficult, if you're playing in such a way to restrict certain skills from running ahead of your requirements. At Runefest, one of the questions asked of the panel was, 'why does Jagex hate pures?' Mod Mark responded to that one with a glorious bit of spin. Bless him. He said that Jagex doesn't hate pures. But as a developer of a game, he wants everyone to play every facet of it. He can't force pures to train, say, defence, any more than he can force me to rush one skill ahead for a 99. But what he, and his colleagues, can do is make those denied parts of the game more attractive. Their job, or modus operandi, is to make us want to train them. They're very good at it. :( Though I set out to have every level equal (to within the same decade, ie all 70s or all 80s), it doesn't work like that. Some skills are much quicker to raise than others. Woodcutting and fletching are much faster than runecrafting and slayer. Some skills are much more expensive than others. Agility can be trained for free, unless you're buying summer pies or entrance to Brimhaven agility course; but construction is notoriously a money-sink. By the time I was getting my first level 80s, I had other skills lagging behind in the 60s. It was only then that I made a concerted effort, as I hadn't really done before, to stop training certain skills. I wanted the others to be raised to their level. It was a nightmare. I wanted to do Shattered Hearts each week, because it's a statue in my house and the xp in things like runecrafting was really useful. But I had woodcutting lingering on level 89. Meanwhile, I had other skills that I was struggling to train out of the 70s. I really wanted them to reach level 80 before any skill went into the 90s. I recall one week of strange rocks, where I deforested a whole copse of ordinary trees, because I was desperately trying not to get too much woodcutting xp. It took forever to get those rocks. It felt to me like I only had to walk down a street to have sneaky woodcutting xp attack me. I had enjoyed joining members of Canting at the evil trees. That had to stop, because they give woodcutting xp. The sawmill minigame came out and I'd have liked to go and try it out. I put it off, because my woodcutting is too high. But the Varrock elite diary is now out and one of the requirements is to complete a large task at the sawmill. I went there. Enjoyed it. Did a handful of large tasks, suddenly I've got 91 woodcutting. Mod Mod must be punching the air in glee. RS content has proved so attractive that I've messed up my self-imposed equality of levels to play it. Then there's magic. I never seem to actively train magic, but I pile on the xp like someone on a diet piles on calories. I used to do the circus every week, but as soon as magic started incroaching on my hitpoints level, I stopped going to the circus. You could argue that I should still go, but only complete ranging and agility there. But I'm not that strong. If a wad of xp is sitting there for the taking, I'm going to want to have it. I've been to the circus three times since and just couldn't make myself leave, without doing the mage section too. On top of that, try training runecrafting (xp for which I desperately need) at the ZMI altar, teleporting back and forth to Moonclan, without ending up with a chunk of mage xp too. I've tried banking by the door in the dungeon, but it doesn't suit me. Finally, there's my absolute weakness - Construction. There is no way that I can get to level 91 without going to get my 30k free xp per day. I'm now level 92 and speeding towards level 93. I should stop there, as that's all of my high level furniture within reach. But if I get level 94, then I can boost to open my effigy and replace my black demon with an iron dragon. If I get level 95, I can help with more effigies at w117 Daemonheim, without luring players home to boost with tea. Then, if I get level 96, I have another room allocation. Then, if I get level 97, I can assist with all effigies. I can technically stop there for a bit, because nothing exciting will happen to me at level 98. But I'll be able to smell that last room allocation at level 99. Not to mention the skillcape itself. I predict here and now that Construction will end up being my first 99 and it will happen while I still have other skills lingering in the 80s. I have enjoyed Dungeoneering, when I've trained it. However, it's a pain in the rear, when you're trying to keep your levels, well, level. It is a den of lazy skill training. Dungeoneering, coupled with strange rocks, is how woodcutting got so dangerously close to 90 in the first place. This is mostly why I don't train much Dungeoneering. Moreover, it's a time-consuming distraction. While I'm in Daemonheim, I'm not working on slayer nor runecrafting. Meanwhile, those skills that are trained fast, and gain xp just by walking down the road, edge ever closer to the 90s. Until it arrived, my Tears of Guthix kept alternatively feeding slayer and runecrafting. Now they exclusively feed Dungeoneering. All of this will become a moot point, when I have all of my skills into the 90s. They can hardly move out of the decade then! My current plan is to train slayer to 85, using penguin points as well. Then I'll give up and train Dungeoneering to 85. By then, I'm expecting that more than just three of my skills will have crept into the 90s. I'll then concentrate on the remainder. Once all 25 are in the 90s, then it's a free for all. You'll start seeing me finally getting some 99 skillcapes. There has been much talk in Canting about me getting all 25 on the same day. As much fun as that will be, I think it would restrict my gameplay so much as to make it unenjoyable. I would have liked hitpoints to have been the first, as someone said that an untrimmed hitpoints cape is the hardest skillcape to achieve. It's not going to happen.

    Treasure Trail Update

I've been doing a few Treasure Trails since the update to check how things are and whether the update achieved everything it should have done. I've killed Bork daily and had a single level 3 clue and the Skeletal Horror has dropped nilch, meaning I've not had a chance to try the elites, so this is my experience from a few level 3s and a level 2. First off, I love how they send you off exploring into random locations. There have been a couple of clues where I've been wandering into the Wilderness or Kharazi Jungle (I can now find my way in without a guide :)) and been going to myself "this is actually pretty awesome". The landscapes in RS aren't at all epic, but a bit of imagination takes you part of the way there. :) Next, some of the Uri (emote) clues are silly, requiring you to wear reasonably expensive items that you don't generally have knocking around your bank. Rune Platelegs, fine, but a Rune Warhammer? Have a couple of these clues in a trail and you've probably spent half your reward on things to take up bank space. I will mention that I like how the Gnome Robes, a required item, have the colours in their name, but other items such as a 'round red and black snelm', 'purple gloves' or 'green gnome boots' are hellish when considering abysmal name choices and undescriptive examines. If there's one thing 'good' about Emote clues it's that the GE price limits mean many items are unbuyable and you have to find out how to make things yourself. (no that isn't good, and yes I do have a Splitbark Helm in my house!) Reward-wise, I've had a few trails which have provided alch fodder, then one with gave an Addy Helm (g) and one with a Bandos Page plus Court Summons. Giving me 14 Meerkat scrolls and saying 'you get a TTrail item every time!!!!' is silly - they're not even alch fodder and are worthy only of the floor. I understand that the market shouldn't be flooded with nice things, but even Guthix Pages at 12k a pop were more exciting than a pile of Scrolls or arrows that I'll never look at. Looking at the new rewards, I'm of the opinion that the new Rune God Armour should have been made F2P since otherwise it's fit for little other than storing in people's Costume Rooms. The masks look nice and the Blessed Dragonhide probably looks amazing (all the old sets did, so I'll keep this thought even though I've not seen any). The big issue is that none of these are the big problem for me. If you do TTrails for the reward rather than as a distraction or diversion, you're silly, so the reliance on luck for rewards is a bit of a non-issue. The Uri clues are a pain in the backside, but learning how to make Snelms and other random items because the GE doesn't work as it should is kinda interesting. Begging for F2P things (as a P2Per) is also fairly pointless, so what's the big problem? You can still get the same clue multiple times in a trail! :P It really ruins a trail when you get the same clue multiple times in a and leaving this in is plain irritating. The ability to get the same Slayer task twice in a row was removed because people complained and I really can't see how this is any less annoying. :( Treasure Trails are kinda fun, but getting the same clue multiple times in a trail can ruin it.

    Unacceptable

KRATOS X and Niyggas Suck apparently thought that racist language is acceptable in the GE. After all, it's only a game. We're all here for fun, therefore no-one should take offence. If you do take offence, then you're a no-lifer, playing Rs 24/7 and you should get outside more. Anyone who thinks differently is a 'reytard'; or is a 'smart ***** ffs'. Objections noted. KRATOS X speaking; Niyggas Suck in Strength Cape; Life Burning in Firemaking Cape; and me in green, pointy hat However, I still think that racist language is unacceptable. After reporting the latter's name under the heading 'offensive account name', I then said aloud that I find her name offensive. She replied that it wasn't her fault. A friend had changed it for her. She had already been banned for it once, but she appealed, telling Jagex that her friend did it. Jagex said, 'Oh alright', then let her back in. There was practically a chorus around the GE of, 'Well change your name then!' The fact that the story sounded to me like complete crap is neither here nor there. (She admitted account sharing, so Jagex let her back in with an offensive name?) It was gratifying to witness so many people advise the same thing simultaneously. To me, that sent a powerful message across the board that such things are unacceptable. But it didn't end there. I was going to leave it then, but Niyggas Suck attached herself to me and said, "Why?! Are you a niygga???" I declined to answer, as it's utterly irrelevant. (For the record, I'm a pasty faced Celt.) What annoyed me was the implication that I had to be dark skinned in order to find her offensive. Nope, I'm just a human being. Thank you. I didn't have time to reply though, before Life Burning stepped in. He stated that he also found that language unacceptable and that he had just reported her. A small crowd formed, debating the issue, though most of the talking was with me and Life Burning on the anti-racist side; with KRATOS X and Niyggas Suck on the racist side. It all went on for a good half an hour, with points pressed back and forth. But eventually they left. That was me back to herblore and Life Burning back to fletching. And Life Burning, thank you very much, it was a pleasure standing with you. For everyone else, who shared their views, thank you too. The world is a better place for those who do not remain silent on these issues.

    Tales From The Ge

I've been galavanting off all weekend again, hence not much Runescape happening. Instead, I thought I'd share some true life tales from the GE. These are things that I've observed or overheard, whilst standing there doing herblore or fletching. People-watching in pixels can sometimes be as interesting as people-watching in person. These didn't all happen in the same session. They are all little incidents that I've squirreled away with the vague notion of one day blogging about them. There was the well-heeled man; his combat in red numbers, up in the 130s. He was after an addy full helm, presumably for a clue scroll. I dutifully checked my bank, as I opened it up for more yew logs. I didn't have one. Still he called out. No-one had one for several minutes. Then a level 34 player rushed over to him, "Addy full helm here!" The high levelled player continued to call out his request. I wondered if he had inadvertantly left his public chat off. The level 34 said again that he had the helm. He evidently wasn't traded. This went on for nearly a minute, before the high level snapped, "Stop trading me!" Startled, the level 34 said, "But I have an addy full helm." "So what!" The high level sneered, "I don't trade lower levels." :D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The player was offering 50k for someone to buy him a red pirate shirt and bandana. No-one was rising to the bait. There was something downright suspect about someone, two squares from the crowd cloistering around the GE counter, not buying his own clothes. Even I stood there trying to work out what the scam was. I came up blank. Others weren't so silently curious. One of them eventually broke away from the press of people to ask him about it. "Y dont u just buy from GE?" "I'm colour-blind," he explained. "I can't tell which shirt is red." "LOL!" gasped his inquistator, then walked off. I waited a few seconds to see if I'd missed some interaction there, but the player went on, "Please can someone help me?" I walked across. "I'll do it." I told him, just from a square away, so he could register that I was talking to him. "Thank you!" He blew me a kiss. I meandered back to the counter and placed the bids for his clothing. The orders weren't filled immediately, so I returned to him to explain the situation. He had obviously been really frustrated by the situation. His conversation came out in a gush. He couldn't tell red from many of the other colours and he'd been trying for ages to get the outfit. I had noticed that, when I went to buy them, there was no indication other than a visual image, for the colour of the items. They all had the same examination text. We waited patiently for a couple of minutes; me fletching, him chatting alongside. He was a pleasant lad. In the end, I figured that we'd be here all day. I asked him to hang on, then drank a bottle of rum. I woke up, with the hangover from Hell, over on Mos Le Harmless. There I dodged jungle horrors, detoured to catch a ninja impling, then dashed into the pirate clothes shop in the town. I bought him the full, red pirate outfit. It only cost a handful of gp. Seconds later, I was back in the GE handing them to him. He tried to give me the 50k, but it was hardly worth that! After a bit of back and forth, we compromised with 20k. It was lovely to see him happy dancing around the place, in his brand, new outfit. He blew me another kiss and ran off to show the rest of Gielinor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was obvious that there was a bit of a fracas going on. I stood on tip-toe to see over the heads of other GE dwellers, in the manner of rubber-neckers everywhere. A woman was shrieking, "Please, will you just go away!" "Just add me to your friend list." The man following her demanded. (Actually, he said 'fiend list', but we all know what he meant.) "No." She stated, firmly. "And I've come in here, because I want witnesses!" We were all paying attention now. Nothing like a bit of drama to make the herblore xp just fly by. The rest of the soap opera went on. It seemed that the argument had started amongst him and another person, but she'd defended him and now she was on the front line. He told her that he didn't believe that she was a woman, because there are no girls on the internet. (I chuckled IRL.) She said that she was, but that was none of his business. He told her that, IRL, she was probably fat and ugly. Then he said that she probably slept around. I piped up then, saying that he shouldn't be launching personal attacks like this and she should put him on ignore, if he's bothering her. That latter advice was echoed by another player across the way. He informed her (and the 50 or so people listening in) that he was going to hack her account. He asked her where she lived IRL. She refused to tell him. He circumvented the censor with many derogatory words concerning her supposed promiscuity. She started to walk away. He kept following her. I ran alongside, telling him that he was being out of order here and to leave her be. Telling her to put him on ignore. A man in full Bandos stepped forward and told him that you do not treat a lady like that. A man in one of the Barrows armour (I can only recognise Guthans, it wasn't that) offered to take him on in a PvP world. The woman kept walking, he kept following, still calling her those names. All around the GE came the refrain, 'reported'. The final voice had a silver crown next to it. I've never seen anyone teleport away so fast! The woman stood there and thanked us all. She finished with, 'And now I've got him on ignore.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hope you like my little stories.

    Is Runescape Gameplay Engaging?

I've been watching through the TotalHalibut Cataclysm videos and found them interesting. Yes, the commentary is fantastic, but the key point is that the gameplay itself is very watchable. I hadn't really picked up on this key point until watching the, rather dull, Dwarf starting zone video and the following came up in the commentary: "I'm gonna speed up most if this and I'll let you see the little bits of storyline that are dumped in it otherwise there is nothing to watch. Use the Total Biscuit method of measuring whether or not a starting zone is any good. How much do I have to speed it up? Because if I have to speed it up a lot like this, indeed this segment right here, is a good 5 minutes or so. If I have to speed it up that much then something is wrong with your starting zone. It is not engaging, it is repetitive and it's dull. Ideally what you'd want in a game like this is for every quest to be something that people would enjoy watching ie. it's got sufficient storyline, gimmicks or excitement to be watchable in video form. Now, of course, that's never gonna be the case, but it's something that you should aspire to." Thinking about it, this quote is extremely true (replace 'starting zone' with 'game' to make it more generalised). Good gameplay is great to watch. It doesn't matter if you've never played a game before, good gameplay is exciting and makes you want to join in. Looking at it from this angle, Runescape is horrendously dull. There are few who would sit through a 20 minute video of somebody doing a typical skilling activity, so it indicates that the core gameplay itself isn't as interesting as it should be. Quests and bosses, fine, they're a bit more interesting to watch, but the typical player doesn't spend the majority of their time doing these activities. Set up a screen recorder. Log into Runescape, start doing something and record the game window until you log out. Come back the next day and watch through what you recorded. When you become bored, that's when you started grinding. Was it fun?

    The Little Things

I've just come back from the Glastonbury Festival. While I was there, the sun beat down on us really hard. On the Saturday, we were reliably informed by the in-festival newspaper that the temperature in Somerset that day was greater than Mexico City. There is a big difference though. Mexicans are used to tropical weather. Us pasty-faced Brits aren't. More to the point, I'm not. I turned up at the festival with the usual pure white, Celtic complexion. I left it looking like a cross between a lobster and a charcoaled steak. In order to not actually die of sunstroke, I tended to spend each day, until about 4pm, in the Leftfield. After that, the sun was lower in the sky and I could plaster on the factor 30 and quite enjoy walking out in it. The Leftfield had two things going for it. The first is that it was a huge marquee, full of cool grass and shade (all within a short stagger from the pubs, food vendors and toilets); the second is that it's full of flag-waving Socialists. I was very at home. :( So what's this got to do with Runescape? The link came because I thought about Runescape a lot in there. I particularly thought about it during a talk about racism in sport. I'm not a sportswoman. Being a female footballer back in the 1980s gave me a lot of insight into the issues, but they weren't relevant to me now. I am a gamer. A lot of what was being said could be just as easily be applied to Runescape, as it could the sporting world. A bloke called Leroy Rosenior got up to speak. He was a professional footballer, notably for Fulham, West Ham, Bristol City and Queen's Park Rangers. He played for England Under-16s and Under-21s, before getting caps for Sierra Leone. He's now a football coach, currently at Shrewsbury. Leroy Rosenior talked about the little things. He said that it's easy to stand up to the big things, because they're in your face and can't be ignored. But the real damage is done by the little things. Those are the tiny instances that you don't mention, because it's not your place, or you're scared of being accused of troll baiting, or it doesn't matter as it's only a comment. He talked about leaving the pitch once, after scoring an amazing goal, full of the joys of a win. As he passed into the tunnel, a ten year old boy spat on him from the terraces. The boy's father laughed. None of Leroy's team-mates or anyone on the terraces said a word. Leroy himself didn't say a word. It was just a little thing, almost swamped by everything else happening during that age in football. This was a time when players had bananas thrown at them and monkey chants filled the stadiums - sometimes by their own team's supporters. He also talked about his one-time team-mate, Justin Fashanu. That poor man had two strikes against him. He was black and, even until the present day, the only professional footballer ever to come out as gay. Back then, footballers used to have communal baths after the game. Leroy was in the bath with two other players, when Justin came in. The other two men immediately got up out of the bath and walked out. They weren't racist, after all they were in the bath with Leroy at the time. Leroy said that they were otherwise really decent men. But the message was clear. Justin had just come out as gay and therefore they wouldn't be in the bath with him. Just in case it was catching or something, presumably. Leroy stayed put. He could tell that it had bothered Justin, but Leroy didn't say a word. He couldn't think what to say. He figured that if he didn't say anything, then it would maybe go away. Later, long after Justin had publicly come out, he admitted that he had been the butt of malicious jokes by team-mates. A few years later, when Justin was 37, he committed suicide over his sexual orientation. The little things had added up into something too big to bear. Leroy told us that, though he knows that that one incident didn't directly result in the suicide, he really wishes that he'd spoken up at the time. Again, what's this to do with Runescape? While I was listening to Leroy's stories and his work with 'Give Racism the Red Card', my mind wandered to swastikas burning in logs at the GE. It's a little thing and, when I blogged about it, I know that some were of the opinion that I should let it go. I was feeding the troll by tackling the person creating such symbols. It's happened twice to my knowledge. The first time, I alone engaged the burner. We had a long talk about symbology and history. No-one in a crowded GE stepped up to support me, which did sadden me. The second time, it was xCJRx who tackled the person. He was soon joined by myself and Arcturus. As we discussed the swastika with the person lighting it, another player joined us from the crowd. 1134888 was her name and she and CJ had something in common. Both had grandparents in Auschwitz. That was the image in response to the individual, who kept responding, 'Lol', even as more and more people told him that the swastika was unacceptable. Had he been Hindu, we might have let him off. These, to me, are the little things that need to be tackled. Just as Leroy wishes that he had said something comforting to Justin, I never want to be in a situation where I didn't say something. Ok, that leaves me wide open to being baited, but so what? I feel silly for half a minute, then get over it, if I'm wrong. But if I'm right, then it's one more voice screaming out, 'This is unacceptable', in a life which might be full of people saying that it's the way it is. Obviously each scenario has to be judged on the facts at the time. I recall years ago hearing someone coming out with extremely strong racist language, including references to the KKK, as another player had mentioned being black IRL. This barrage of abuse went on and no-one in a crowded Seers' Bank spoke up. I did. I reported him and then took my low levelled self over to the scene and added my point of view. On the other hand, a massive race row broke out in LRC yesterday, where I didn't support it. A player named Hell O Nika was being shouted at by a group of players. Their charge was that Nika was a misspelling of 'swell person' (if that doesn't get past the Sal's censors, then it's a derogatory American derivative of negro). The girl was getting a bit upset here. She pointed out that she's Russian and her name is Nikita. Her pet name at home is Nika, hence Hell O Nika (Hello Nika). She couldn't even understand why she was being accused of racism. To be fair, neither could I, until the rabble spelt it out. I took her side. I guess that what I'm saying with this waffle is that there are real people behind the pixels in Runescape. The comments and actions made in game are being noticed and registered by real people behind the screen. I'm proud of the people, like CJ and Arct, who will never let the little things pass by without comment. I know that I never will. It doesn't need a riot. Just a quiet, 'this is unacceptable', will do, along with the reasons why. But every time we let it go for fear of feeding trolls, or apathy, or not wanting to make a fuss, then we say instead that this is acceptable. Silence means approval. *steps down from my soapbox* Edit: Thank you very much to Goggie_100 for putting me onto the KEN campaign. I totally, utterly, 100% support this. Adventurer Log Bugs

Once again, there were problems with the Adventurer's Log today, spewing out statements that people had done things that they hadn't. Personally, I missed the actual event, but the wonders of RSS have told me that I did the following (actual status in brackets): 96, 97, 98, 99 Attack (82) 97, 98, 99 Strength (83) 81 Firemaking (99) Completed FTP3 twice (complete) Reached levels 72, 74, 76, 77, 78 Smithing, but missed the ones between (76) Completed EW3 (complete) 85, 86 Fletching (88) 16m Defence XP (level 93) 18m Constitution XP (level 89) Killed 3 boss monsters in Damonheim (killed two yesterday) Killed 70 Tormented Demons across 13 game sessions (the only ones I've ever killed were during WGS) 73 Herblore (90) Got a Godsword Shard 3 from Growler (never killed and don't know which room he's in) Got a Godsword Shard 2 from Kree'arra (never killed or even been into the same room) Killed 11 Kree'arras (never killed - see above) 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83 Woodcutting (90) Got an Ancient Effigy from a Tormented Demon (not killed anything that'd drop one since the update, let alone a TD) <3 silly RSS spam :D
  21. I've spent a bit of time Chompy Hunting over the past couple of days to get some new hats to go with various outfits and have loved it. :D Of course, it's old-skool, so it isn't totally polished. The flashing arrows disappear when you kill another Chompy, but this makes it more fun making sure you miss none. Various toads, bones and birds will hide within the ground when they fall in certain positions, so can't be seen. The toads bounce and there's no invisible area around them that can be clicked on (like implings) which means they're a pain to catch, but this makes it feel more real since bouncing toads aren't the easiest things to grab hold of. :s To be honest, I don't care about any of the above. They help make it fun. The long waits with nothing coming, then 7 Chompies arriving at once. They make it feel epic. The complete lack of hideous trees* to look at. That makes it beautiful. The fact that you only see about one other person an hour. That makes it feel wild and remote and means those that do pass find themselves pulled into a random conversation about anything. Chompy Hunting is fun! [/name]What was annoying me can be seen in the above screenshot just below my character. There's a square and a half where there's a z-bias problem and the water was constantly flickering. After a while (at ~22:15 on a Friday evening), I decided it really was a problem and sent in one of those Bug Report things that's clearly eaten by a machine. Five minutes later, somebody appeared next to the pond and got the knee-jerk 'ohi' since nobody else had passed in a while. Right-clicking on them, it turned out to be one of those gold-crowned guys (Mod Cj) checking out that report I'd just sent. Fine, fine, there need to be people in 24/7 to jump on major bugs as they turn up, but he could have hopped onto a test world much easier than appearing in-game next to me. The extra effort to appear like that may seem fairly minor, but makes all that time spent staring at the 'report a bug' form feel like it's not been wasted. Now, if they'd just appear more often! This is the second time I've had a JMod appear in-game following a bug report I've sent. The other was just after the Vinesweeper release when Mod Chris L (then in QA) appeared and hung around for 15 minutes before deciding that what I'd sent in was probably my mind playing tricks on me and heading off to be useful elsewhere. Anyway, Mod Cj didn't stay for long (all that needed doing was spin the camera a couple of times) and left with a 'cya'. What was possibly more exciting happened about 90 seconds later when somebody called 'Glitch King' ran past. I lolled. I think the two points to take away from the above mishmash of mumble are: Chompy Hunting is fun! :D Bug reports are read by a human once in a while. :s (and I've now reached 2250 Chompy kills) I am now a Dragon Archer and can get four of the 5-feather hats from Rantz - [name=trees-in-runescape-are-hideous]* Trees in Runescape (with leaves - normal, oak, maple, yew, etc) look plain horrible and desperately need their looks updating. I know they're widespread and increasing the polygon count or whatever would have an effect on performance, but as they are they look totally out of place. Personally, I'd be willing to accept a 20% decrease in my frame rate for the trees to look acceptable. Just update the hideous blighters!

    Court Cases

Today saw the release of the first Court Cases which were blogged about in November, so I headed off to Seers' Village and the court room. Talking to the Clerk, the introduction is fairly clear and the notes are in the Drawers. They aren't too long, which is good, and the fingerprints stop it being a 'read this or else' situation. With all the information read, I headed down the stairs to prosecute the Mugger (just because the name ends in -gger, it doesn't mean he has anywhere near the same rep that Hogger does :( - pet peeve each time he gets mentioned in a news post). I went through, reading every chat option to see if there was anything interesting. It all was. The defender then had a turn and got all the cheers from the Jury that I didn't and won. :/ Back upstairs and I decided to drop the case. I talked to the Clerk again and could choose to defend instead of prosecute. Since I'd just been shown all the correct answers, I decided to do that. Back down again and I realised that all the answers hadn't been given simply because the options you're given to choose from give no indication about what you're going to say. Because of this, I still managed to get two of the options wrong and lose. A third try and I got all the options right, but chose the wrong jury member. Finally, I chose the correct jury member having got a clean streak and successfully defended Hogger. It's a nice idea, but implemented horribly. You can switch from prosecution to defence and back again (I guess this is harder with the other trials since you'll need a summons). When you summon a witness, you don't talk to them. When you've finished with a witness, it doesn't give you the choice to summon the other. Instead, you have to talk to the Judge who goes "Whadda ya want, nub?" (or it feels like that after he's said it a dozen times). The conversations when building a defence really don't flow at all. When you need to choose a jury member, the judge asks which member you want to pick. There's then an anonymous message that asks the SAME THING. When the Jury panel appears, the message goes, so it's useless anyway. The jury panel has annoying tooltips that don't help at all since they say exactly the same thing. When you examine the citizens who are spectating, 6 of them have the same examine, then there's one which has a different examine and makes it unclear whether Seers' Village should have an apostrophe in its name. Two of the citizens also look exactly the same, down to the way they sit. Making one mis-click means you have to re-do the whole thing, which gets tedious after the second attempt. (and that's just what I can remember off the top of my head - there are several more individual problems I've not mentioned) This isn't like The Chosen Commander where a few small issues relating to chat not flowing properly mean it's only 'pretty darn amazing' rather than 'epic'. This is conversations flowing so badly the content feels horribly broken and totally untested. Heck, the entire D&D is based on the idea of long conversations, so there really is no excuse. It simply doesn't work as it stands and I'm not going to be rushing back for more. :/

    Private Chat Colours

One of the key issues I mentioned in the first of the Colourblindness in Runescape entries was the colour of chat text. Today saw the release of a way to "choose the colour of your split [private] chat", so off I hopped into the game and had a look at what had been added. After the release of the Notes system and the horrible colour-selection menu that has, I wasn't particularly hopeful. On the plus side, it was being worked on in January (said in one of the Q&A sessions), so this is the culmination of 4 months of work. So, I logged into the game and found what I was looking for. 15 colours to choose from, OK, that's probably what I was expecting. OK, so nobody's logged in, but there's some 'Sample text' to look at, lets flick through the colours! ;) *4 colours are looked at, reaching the above position* ... Where in the whole of Gielinor is there a location that looks anything like that colour-wise? The chat text is going to be put against the many colours that this world has to offer, not a consistent brown colour. To me, the 'Sample text' in the above image is perfectly fine to read without problems. When, however, it's moved to the 'live' environment of actual text in the game it's painful and difficult to read. Why the background isn't transparent, I have no clue. (Fine, I do. Whoever designed it clearly isn't the intended user.) Because of this worse-than-useless 'Sample text', I was in need for some real text to play with, so had to ask for people to PM me something that would be useful to test with. :) Next, who's up for the new version of hunt the stick? Yes, there is genuinely some chat text there. When playing around with this new interface there were several occasions where I'd set the colour to green and thought that there had somehow been 100 messages scroll past and pushed the PM chat out of the front of the queue because of the lack of testing (nobody would be silly enough to let that into the game with no shadow, right? There's nowhere in the game that it'd be remotely readable in the current state, even Lumbridge Bank Chest). In total, 5 out of the 15 colours have no shadow behind the text. Even the black text should have something behind it since small 1px wide text is notoriously difficult to read. This is exactly why I mentioned that it should also be possible to change the colour of the shadow. Of the remaining 10, there are 3 that are easy to read (white, yellow and yellow - some would call the second one 'light green', but I see little difference apart from one being slightly lighter). Beyond the colours, it's made it much slower to actually split the chat text. Previously, it was two clicks and about a second to change the settings when you wanted to alter it to take a screenshot. It's now more clicks and takes at least twice as long. There isn't even a right-click option to simply toggle the chat setting. I'm also surprised that this opportunity wasn't taken to move the position of the split chat to the right so it isn't squished against the side of the screen (so it's harder to read) when in a non-fixed window. Overall, the current setup is a shambles and changes need to be made for it to be as useful as it should be. On top of the 15 'simple' colours, there should be an 'advanced' option that allows you to choose exactly what you want from 16.7m colours (both WYSIWYG and RGB). It'd mean an extra couple of bytes of data for those who bother to choose an 'advanced' colour, but the advantages would be massive. It's clear that storage isn't a major issue since the F2P Friends List has been expanded, which will create much more data than allowing a proper range of colours to be chosen. It should be possible to choose the colour of the shadow. The 'Sample text' should have a transparent background. There should be a right-click option to toggle the Split Chat option. After having 4 months+ to be worked on, this really isn't anywhere near as good as it should be. It's nice, but no more and full of various problems that want fixing. This is a system made of incompetence, people who don't play the game and lots of unanswered questions about what took so long. (I presume this release is testing before expanding to the other types of text and that the vital ability to make the chat box permanently opaque is coming soon)

    Is It A Competition?

Happy birthday, Kayla! Kayla/Cougarsrule9 is one year older (and probably several dungeoneering levels higher) today! *happy dance* So if you see her in-game, be sure to glomp her with birthday kisses. I have a big question for everyone today: is Runescape a competition? I'll declare my bias from the outset: for me, it's not. I understand though, for many people, it most certainly is. So what do I mean by 'competition'? This is something that I've encountered on the RSOF a lot, but occasionally in-game as well. Basically those who view Runescape as a competition, see it as a race between their character and the other 10 million accounts. The winner is the one with the best armour or the one who has the most riches. Everything else are just skirmishes en route to greatness. So, for example, you're mining ore and another player comes in. Those who view Runescape as a competition will fight that player for every ore in the room. The strongest miner not only gets the mining xp, but has denied that ore/armour/gp to the other player. It was a mini battle and the strongest player won. For those who don't see it as a competition, then the arrival of the other player is an opportunity to share. It's taken as read that you'll mine this ore and that player will mine another ore. Ideally, you'd both leave with an equal share of the resources in that mine. Extend that to dominance of a slayer room/creature; or the grabbing of equipment at the start of a dungeon. In fact, extend it endlessly to anywhere that requires players to scramble after a limited resource. In a competition, what's mine is mine and what's yours is hopefully going to be mine too. If I have high level equipment, then it's going to be loaned out at premium costs. If I have spare materials, then no-one else is getting them, as that might provide an advantage for your character over mine. Information is held close to my chest, as this is my advantage, not yours. I'm saying this without any moral judgement, because, for the competitor, this is the nature of the game. You might as well ask a champion athelete to let the number two win the race, than give away something in Runescape. Because it is a race. It's a competition. Why cripple yourself to give another a boost up, when that person could overtake you? I think that where you stand on the divide here is one of the flashpoints for conflict. I've witnessed some competitors reacting with real anguish over the fact that they've been pigeonholed as selfish. No-one asks Chelsea or Manchester United to loan their best players to the teams at the bottom of the league, just because they're stronger; so why then is this player selfish for refusing to hop, when they're the strongest player in the room? If they can take, then they should and that's the nature of the competition. However, on the other side of the coin are those players, like myself, who don't see this as a competition. To me, the game is more of a co-operative, where fair play should rule. My strengths cover another player's weaknesses; and vice versa. The real anguish for players like me is when the competitors try to muscle me out of the game and deny me resources. To me, they are being selfish; to them, they're just playing the game. I read so often on the RSOF conversations where all are getting upset, because they haven't sussed that not everyone views the game in the same way. The competitor will scream impotently, 'But it's a competition!!11!!!', then stare on in disbelief as they are attacked for this. The non-competitor will scream, 'Might is not right!', then feel cornered as they're bombarded with combat levels and other statistics. The competitors have the biggest argument of all. If Runescape is not meant to be a competition, then why can we battle for resources? Why is it not that one person mining ore stops another person from attempting to do the same? We get some creatures where, upon hitting them, you're told, 'Somebody else is fighting that!' But you never get a warning message upon entering a slayer room, 'this area cannot sustain more than two players, please hop.' So are they right? Is it a competition? Or just a facet of human nature, exploited by the game's makers as encouragement to train to higher levels? Personally, though, I prefer the world where everyone helps each other; where those at the top are reaching down to provide a hand up for those at the bottom. How about you? Finally, we have a banner for Canting Away's Summer Festival! Thank you, Aximili EI, for creating it for us. I know that a couple of others are making some too, so I'll just alternate the banners per blog. Everyone else, click on the banner to read the programme so far!

    Dungeoneering

I've reached level 31 and, according to my Adventurer's Log, have raided 35+ dungeons (as well as lost progress on another half dozen), so thought it time to make some initial observations. The first is on losing progress when you're kicked out of a dungeon when in single player. Contrary to the FAQ answer, this problem existing should have delayed the release of the entire skill because it's such a key issue. If it's not a "big enough issue", then about the only thing that could be big enough is an inability to enter the dungeon at all. Allowing this to appear without an ability to remember progress or pause part way through the dungeon so you can come back later is little short if idiotic. After that, I'll agree completely with what troacctid said about it, so rather than me type it all out again, go and read what he wrote. :P forum.tip.it/blog/39/entry-1416-what-to-fix-in-dungeoneering-20/ As for actual experiences in the dungeon, they've been varied. As soon as the update arrived, I was in-game trying to work out how to play. I couldn't see how you started a solo round (bad), so ended up in a 5-man random dungeon. We clearly had no idea between us what we were doing, so muddled along, with me taking the role of Mage. It was a fun couple of hours even if our levels were still single-digits by the end. Fun-wise, it was much better than Hunter (over-crowded resources) and similar to Farming (nobody having a clue what to do and trying to work it all out). [name=dung-bad-lighting][/name]Graphics-wise, my impressions were varied. Some of the bosses looked fantastic (below), but the lighting is terrible and doesn't feel very dungeon-y. This goes for both the Frozen and Abandoned levels. Some of the bosses look great Eventually, people left and I worked out how to enter a solo dungeon, so have done that since. Some of the puzzles are great fun, however if there isn't something new in every dungeon it can become tedious. There's ended up being something new every 2 or 3 dungeons, which is OK, but should really be more regular if it isn't going to become a repetitive grind. I love some of the boss mechanics and that the death penalty involves losing ~5 minutes of work (perfect ^_^). Astea Frostweb - the first 'boss' I encountered and the Prayer-switching makes it slightly interesting, but all-in-all it's a boring fight and doesn't feel very special Gluttonous Behemoth - the first fight I had that felt like a boss. When it randomly healed, we had no idea what to do, so somebody suggested getting in the way of the carcass. Somehow it worked and we all felt special inside (). Exciting the first time or two, but after that it's boring and doesn't hit any damage. Icy Bones - he's evil. He hits high, takes little damage from anything and I hate him. Luminescent Icefiend - in terms of repeatable enjoyment, this is one of the best. The special attack means that you want to keep your HP as low as possible to avoid wasting food, so each time you meet him there's an attempt to defeat him using less and less food. I've got it down to 6 pieces of food that heal 170 each, though could do better :D Plane-Freezer Lakhrahnaz - great fun, but doesn't hit any damage and has several bugs To'Kash the Bloodchiller - I met him once, but can't remember anything about the battle so it can't have been very special Skeletal Horde - fun, fun, fun, fun, fun. The first time I entered the room, I had Auto-Retaliate on and died fairly quickly. Heading back in, I made sure it was turned off and had huge amounts of fun, with flashbacks to the Stairs Fight in Zul'Farrak. It's immense fun and I can see great repeatability value by doing things such as turning Auto-Retaliate on to make it more exciting. Hobgoblin Geomancer - booooooorrrrriiiiiinnnnnggggg Bulwark Beast - the armour is a great idea, however, like the Gluttonous Behemoth, after the first encounter I can see it becoming repetitive The lack of integration with the rest of the game is disappointing (we can hope that there's more to come over the next couple of weeks, but it makes you wonder why more didn't appear on release). It's buggy. I've had times where Melee combat hasn't worked at all. Plane-Freezer Lakhrahnaz likes getting stuck in positions where you can't attack him. If a boss drops an item when you have a full inventory, it doesn't appear on the floor, so the item disappears (yes, some of the bosses need no food :P). Pathfinding around doors and in the Monolith room is abysmal, with you getting stuck in stupid places. The room with 5 switches appears to be impossible to complete solo (several people have had problems). As it is, it's a buggy mini-game that's been called a skill to justify the high dev time required to make it. Fun in parts, but with too many problems to be worth continuing with in the current state. Further experiences can be found in the comments.
