  1. Some exciting developments on the price charts for today, Thursday September 5! Near the end of this video, I show which Rares I have purchased today - and in my bank screenshot you can see another item that I am merchanting, watch and see a special LEAKED Merch Strategy from the new and expanded Merchanting Workshops - Opening Soon!
  2. After a quiet week, Rares Markets may now be poised to climb higher as new reversal patterns at the end of down trends are now forming! These free video merch reports on YouTube are entirely supported by your LIKES and COMMENTS! I appreciate your feedback and questions! To Your Success - Linkbuilder
  3. My method of trading is almost purely based on technical analysis of the price charts with a wee interest in fundamentals like JAGEX making an update. Exciting and uncertain times Trading Rares on the Grand Exchange here in mid August of 2013! Price reports have become more quiet in the R Quark Friends Chat within the game of Runescape - and the price updates on the official Discontinued Items Forum have become few and far between. The price of Rares may be continuing on a long-term down trend, but some of the items are bucking the trend and going higher. I have sold out of my position in Rares - and did not make the profit I could have... making me think more deeply about applying RULE #2 in my successful trades... Flipping Rares could be very profitable in a declining market - though it is not my intention to start teaching how to flip rares until after I have much more gp.

    Happy Days With Tortoises

I think I've found the only thing in Gielinor, where a finished product costs more than the materials needed to make it! Update: Just came to do this again and both shells and war tortoise pouches are crashing. I guess that the merchanting clan has sold up.

  7. I'm level 86 range. I own full void and full black dhide. Karl is not pronounced Karil Other than that really useful reason to have Karil's armour set, can anyone make a case for me keeping it? I've got my eye on the 7.1m that I could have by selling it.

    Money Money Money (updated)

My whole RS life at the moment is in pursuit of filthy lucre. I need 26m. Or 26 magic stones for one demon throne and one magic cape rack. I'm not doing too badly, though I am going against my instincts. There's often an age old decision to be made in most skills and acquisitions: money versus xp. Take, for example, the things that my subjects collect in my realm of Miscellania and Ectceteria. That's where I get all of my 'free' herblore xp from. I have them on 100% herbs and 50% fish. The fish pay for the herbs. I just have to find the secondaries and I'm away. But not this week. This week, I'm cleaning those herbs and shoving them straight onto the GE. The money rolls in, but I have to ignore the lack of herblore xp. However, I am getting xp in other ways. I'm falling back on those huge money-making skills: farming, runecrafting and slayer. Though I'm not ignoring the rest either. I've put my share of crafted jewellery and longbows into the GE just recently. I'm also falling back on self-sufficiency. Need some yew logs to get my fletching stones? For months, I've been buying the yew logs off the GE, because time is money and all. Now I'm hanging around the Gnome Stronghold with an axe, adding to the chronic deforestation problem there. Time is money, people scream. But money is also tied up in the GE, flipping common items. I've currenty got 768gp in ready cash to play with. The flipping isn't going brilliantly. For about three days, my chosen items were shifting well, but then went splat. It's taking two days to flip one item, while the other hasn't bought at all in that time. I think I need to change items. None of this is helped by the GE, which seems to be on a general go slow at the moment. I'm guessing that this is post-Bonus XP Weekend blues, coupled with the younger players returning to school. Even the most basic items aren't selling, like that steel hatchet that I found on the floor of the GE. The sleeping cap, that I got from a level one clue, won't sell, even at minimum. My kingdom's herbs take a day or two to shift. It's all a bit depressing really. However, for all these money making woes, I am gaining money. I started with less than 1m and I've now got 6m. I've also got 7.5m with Advisor Ghrimm, that I'd forgotten about, when I made my first calculations. So, if I bankrupt myself and my nation, then sell the Karils, I'll have roughly 20m. That's nearly there! I still have nearly 400k construction xp to gain before I'll want to start spending, so there's still time to make that extra 6m. Wish me luck! And oooh! Banksale! Getcha fresh onions here! Organically grown! No preservatives! Hand-picked for your onion pleasure! Clean Harralander! Imported from Miscellania! Getcha wooden spoon here! Salvaged from the GE floor! Boootiful mint cake! Gnome produced and tasty! >.> Edit: Too late. The earth tiara has gone. Sold on the GE. Edit 2: My banksale went great! Teacuptime said that he'd be buying harralander on the GE anyway, so please could he buy mine? Yes! You can! Then Kayla turned up, because she wanted my sleeping cap so she could a) look pwnage and b) put it in the treasure chest in her house. I was very happy to sell it to her. But there was more. Kayla said, "I find myself in need of some junk." "Oh?" I asked, wise to this lady of old, "What kind of junk?" "All that stuff in your banksale." There was much discussion. She swore black is blue that she really did need it. Even the wooden spoon. She'd already promised me that it was because she really wanted it, not because she was just helping me out. It was only as we both accepted and I was wooting over the money, that it occurred to me to ask, "Why do you want all of this junk?" Kayla airily wandered away, "Oh, to decorate this floor..." Nooooo! I spam traded to buy it back. She just laughed at me. :s After that, Kayla and I went on the Daily Activities run, that Kuemper had linked for us. I'd somehow got it into my head that it was a 20 minute run, which netted you 1m gp. Re-reading it now, I can't see where I got that at all. I'll just have to admit to being an hallucinating nub here. Teacuptime was coming too, but we somehow managed to lose him before we'd left Edgeville Bank. :s With the guide up on half of my screen and Kayla trailing me on the other, we covered the entire of Gielinor, getting stuff. I then sold most of it in the GE. I'd like to tell you that I made lots of money. However, I didn't take note of how much I made before and how much I had afterwards, therefore I haven't got a clue. -.- My guess is that I made lots of money though! I've currently got 9m + 7.5m (in my kingdom) + Karil's Set towards the 26m needed for construction. :D

  10. Now I know, on the internet you'll find lots and lots of information on merchanting. You'll find people like Egghebrecht, offering to give that information out, and you'll find groups like Smoking Mils trying to use your interest to their gain. So, I realize that my blog is totally unneeded. However, I wanted a place to output my ideas, my suggestions, and my advice. It will be slightly different than say, Egghebrecht's, and that may be a good thing or a bad thing. I see it as this: my blog will offer advice and help to anyone who wants it. Anyone who doesn't, that's okay too, it'll also probably have a bunch of stuff relating to Runescape, or just my life and my interests. So now that this is out of the way, enjoy the blog. (When I do actually open it. Lolthispostisearly.)

    Acquiring Heraldic Items

After the fiasco of a couple of days ago, I'm not doing too badly for bankspace now. I've retrieved my rune heraldic items from Zach, and returned his money, as well as getting my black heraldic items from Kayla. Zach and Full of Pie have both managed to source me a platebody and platelegs respectively; while everyone else has been on the look-out too. MFI (Demsla to the old crew) has been an angel. He's using four of his GE spaces trying to buy heraldic armour for me (all of mine are taken up with the same). He and Tabt went out goblin pwning, in the hope of a level 1 clue scroll which yielded heraldic armour. He also bought nearly 5000 raw tuna off me, so to free up a bankspace. I was in Skype canting with him at the time and he cracked me up. As I approached, I called out, in my best market-stall voice, "And today, for one day only, your fresh tuna comes with free gifts!" We both knew that I meant some random crap out of my bank, that I just wanted to lose for bankspace. In Skype, MFI just paused and replied dryly, "Well, what are the chances..." *dies* sLinux ended up with some more stuff too, when it turned out that loans of my dragon hatchet had a one day only special offer of free crap out of my bank to go with it. -.- The upshot of all of this is that I now have all of the rune heraldic sets replaced in my treasure trail chest. Most of the addy sets are in there too. I have bids on for the remaining couple of items there. One set of the black heraldic is back in the box, while myself and MFI have bids on for the remaining items. Basically, if both my own and MFI's bids have been filled today, then my crisis is over. I already have a lot more space to play with, though that keeps getting filled with platebodies and platelegs, as they come in. Edit: I now have all of the addy sets replaced. The remaining platebodies were bought overnight. Fingers crossed now that mine and MFI's orders get filled on the black ones. This does mean that I've got a fair amount of bankspace to play with now too, so my own crisis is effectively over. I really am the lucky one, judging by some of the stories coming in on the RSOF. I have good friends, who will allow their own banks to become swamped with my stuff, in order to give me wriggle room. I also have good friends willing to buy my expensive-but-not-shifting-in-the-GE-immediately items off me. This is particularly great, as my finances have taken a serious hit from all of these purchases. By the time I've finished, I will have spent 11m, just on trying to return things to how they were on Wednesday afternoon. I really need Egghebrecht to return from his invasion of Germany and advise me on good items to flip, so I can start rebuilding my capital. That was my 93 Construction fund. Like I said, I really am the lucky one in all of this. There are people out there who opened their treasure chest with their bank and GE already full. They immediately lost their inventory too. There are others who opened that chest with bank, GE and most of their inventory full. They are truly stuffed. They are in negative equity. In short, every time they make space, another helm or shield returns from the ether to fill it. But how do you even make space in those circumstances? Unless you have trusted friends to hold stuff for you, then it's a juggling act of dropping expensive items and hoping that they don't disappear on the floor, while you find something less expensive to drop instead. But as soon as you extract the less expensive thing, its space is filled by a helm or something. I feel so sorry for them. In some ways, I was also unlucky with my circumstances. Ordinarily I try to maintain around 100 free bankspaces, which would have been fine when I opened the chest. Anyone can play with 70 spaces! However, we'd just had the Canting Away Summer Solstice Festival, which always leaves random stuff in my bank. All of the partially used teleports from the Hide and Seek games; all of the drops from the boss hunting; all of the tokens from the minigames; all of the gifts that were handed around at parties etc. Midway through the festival, I'd also bought 500k worth of miscellaenous seeds off Cossack. All very lovely and wanted, but also taking up a lot more spaces in my farming tab than normal. I hadn't checked my kingdom for a month. I'd kept my favour up, but not been to see Advisor Ghrimm. I went there and had a huge bounty! Mine were in herbs and seeds, plus fishing - so there were a lot of random uncut gems, a clue scroll, caskets, a huge variety of herbs, two lots of raw fish, boots, gloves; you get the picture. My bank was so unusually full that I figured that this was an opportune time to go runecrafting up ZMI. I needed to finish off the last 20 spaces in my bank, which I traditionally fill with costumes from my costume room. While I was in there, I thought, "Oh! I wonder if there are any more storable treasure trail items that I need to collect..." You see how I got so pwnt on space? There has been some official comment on the situation from Jagex. It's been admitted that this was an 'apparent error' and the game has been updated to include a warning message on the chest. Anyone trying to open it in the future will be warned that they are about to acquire all of their helms and shields, then they will be given the option to back away. If they attempt to extract anything from the chest, like ranger boots, God blessed dhides etc, then they will trigger the heraldic returns. It's a case of abandon your tt chest until you have the rest of the heraldic sets, or else take the helms and shields. For those of us who have already triggered it, the official word is basically, 'sorry, but tough'. There was also Mod Emilee's rather brusque addition to the Recent Updates FAQ: Mod Emilee is normally really good. She the one that they wheel out when the masses are rioting and they need someone to calm them down. Her and Mod Poppy, that is. However, on this occasion, it seems that Mod Emilee really didn't have a grasp of the issue. Even just the returns were 30 spaces. Unless you were selling them, which few were inclined to do, then you had to double that in acquiring the two items needed to complete the set. Ok, you would never have 60 spaces taken up in one go, as each set of four would immediately go into your tt chest as completed. I think she's fashioned in a particular set of circumstances to come to 20. Namely that the individual has an e-mail address added and therefore received 10 extra spaces with the same update; and that the individual would be willing to immediately drop or sell their helms and shields. Er, no thank you. :(

    I <3 Kitt Fox And H Alger

Kitt left a message for me on Sal's, asking if I had any diamond bolts and super restores. She needed some for Jad. I replied that I'd got both. All that was needful then was for us to be on-line at the same time. That happened today. I was on Operation Make Some Bank Space. This had reached the level of going to empty and fill all of my compost bins, just to get rid of those pineapples and half coconut shells. Kitt came on and asked where I was. "Middle of the farming allotment in Morytania." That patently was not a good meeting space for people who needed a bank to hand, so I gloried to her in Draynor instead. I grabbed all 66 of my enchanted diamond bolts and the rogue 3-sip vial of super-restore. I knew she'd want the 4-sip ones, so I figured I'd ninja in the 3 sip as a present afterwards. I asked how many she wanted. 100. Ooops, I only had 20. But this was for Jad, I wasn't anticipating her needing more than half an inventory's worth! Kitt replied that 20 would be fine. I fetched them out. We traded. Except that she didn't put any money up... I think they probably heard my shrieking in Falador. I 'omfg'-ed Draynor Bank down. It wasn't until I was diving into my bank for money that it occurred to me to ask if the crown was for me. Or was it hers and she was just showing me? Bit of a presumption there on my part! :/ Kitt laughed and assured me that it was for me. The whole Jad/super-restores/diamond bolt thing had been a ruse to get me there. H Alger had spotted the kingly imp and Kitt had run to catch it. It gave her the crown and the two of them had agreed that it was mine. Awwww! *happy dancing and filling up with happiness* :P :/ :/ :D :D I did have that whole conundrum of how much I pay her. After all, this thing is worth many, many millions on the street. I took out all of my money and anxiously looked at my junk. But half of my junk was in the GE, in a lame attempt to be sold. Then I remembered that I didn't need junk, she did. Oh Guthix! I was in such an over-excited muddle! It finally occurred to me to ask how much she was selling it for. She told me lowest trade we could do. Nooooo! It was worth 2.2m in straight trade. She wanted 2m. I tried to trade her 3m, but miscounted the noughts. It came out as 300k. I retracted that and attempted again. She wasn't having 3m. She couldn't anyway, unless she put up some junk. In the finish, the trade was done on the mid-range GE price, as you can see in the picture; though I did give her my Wergali (unf) stash immediately afterwards, as I'd forgotten to take them out the first time. Full royal ftw! :P I posed in Draynor Bank wearing my full royal. Frankly, I looked like a small child playing dress up in her mother's clothes, but that isn't the point! It's going into my house anyway. I have my crown and it's all thanks to Kitt Fox and H Alger. :D Thank you both, you're amazing people. :/ :/  :/ ^_^ Ambo100 and I went to my house to hang it up in my wardrobe. It looks so pretty. After hanging out in first my house, then his, I went back to the GE. I got followed by a player named E d m o n d s, who wanted to know if I had a crown for sale. LOL No, I haven't! He was offering stupid money and incentives for it, but I'm never parting with that crown. Not only have I been after one for ages, but it's now tantamount to a gift from good friends! I don't think anyone's ever asked me if I have a crown for sale before, it was funny that someone did shortly after I finally got one. I wasn't even wearing it. I had on my green, pointy hat! 15. I'm desperately running out of bankspace. I train everything simultaneously, trying to keep my levels level, so I've always got a slight battle going on. I also tend to hoard things, just in case they come in later on. All of this means that I have, for example, loads of seeds for farming, alongside compostable materials and buckets; one of every rune, to make life easier at the ZMI Altar; stacks of potions and secondaries, ready for herbs to appear. I haven't just got one weapon and suit of armour, as that's all I need to train whatever combat skill. I have something to suit all of them. I have pouches ready to summon for a host of skills. Nevertheless, it usually all works out just fine. I am able to keep myself to around 80 odd spaces free, so that things can be added. I ensure that nothing is left in half-finished states of processing and that helps enormously. Until recently that is. The trouble all really started with the hoarding for bonus xp weekend. I quipped before it started that the thing I was most looking forward to wasn't the levels, it was the ability to use my bank properly again. Only that didn't happen. It might just be me and the things that I'm trying to buy and sell, but the GE appears to be broken. My 'junk' tab, ie the things that I've got to sell, like drops and farming produce, is getting more and more full as items go in and nothing shifts on the GE to make space. Then came the Shattered Hearts addition to the game. This, I thought, would be great. I train everything anyway, so collecting all of the stones each week will not be a problem. Unfortunately, it can be. I smelted my way through nearly 1000 ores the other day without a single smithing stone. They were mixed ores. Mostly gold, but with a load of mithril and adamantite in there too. I even used up all of that iron and coal that I'd amassed in two weeks of Temple Trekking and turned them into cannonballs. No stone. So I took advice and went and bought 1000 iron bars. After turning nearly 600 of them into unf iron bolts, I finally had my smithing stones. Then I stopped. I was losing money turning bars into bolts, so I kept the remainder of the iron bars for next week. There's one space taken up that isn't ordinarily used. Multiply that by the spare maple logs ready for next week's firemaking; the spare yews for next week's fletching; the summer pies for next week's agility... you see where this is going? If I'm not going to get the stones doing what I'd normally do, then I'm going to stock up on cheaper alternatives. But raw materials > end produce, so I'm not going lose money unnecessarily. Instead of training things normally, I've found myself stopping mid-processing, because next week's stone might take an hour and thousands of materials to gain. Take gold ore and fish. Ordinarily, I have my gold gauntlets. Any gold coming into my bank is going to be smelted before the close of play. My bank therefore might have a temporary pile of gold ore next to a growing pile of gold bars. If I go fishing, then I let the sharks stack up untl there's a thousand or so, then I'll temporarily change my gauntlets to cooking until they've gone. With Shattered Hearts, I've found myself once a week swopping between gauntlets. That's a pay out of 50k per week, just to get two sets of stones. Meanwhile, I'm not leaving the gold bars be, I'm crafting them into gold amulets for the crafting stones. Then I have to wait until I'm on Lunar Magicks before I can string them; then swop back to ordinary magic to high alch them. In the meantime, I've stopped processing gold every day (if my gauntlets are set on cooking or else I've had my smithing stones and so it's best to wait until next week), so there's one space taken up; then there are the gold bars taking up a space, as I have my crafting stones, so I don't want to make more amulets; then the half-made amulets themselves are taking up space; then last week's full made amulets are taking another, because I ran out of nats. In short, Shattered Hearts is killing my bank space and my money, especially when I've only got one of several stones, because the other just didn't turn up before I ran out of materials. I even had a drop party in my house last night. The advertisement, 'Come to my drop party! Average price of drop - 1k!' brought them flocking. No, it really did. They didn't seem to be picking up much, but they were there. Probably mentally editing my advertisement into, 'Come to my... party!' :D It released 28 spaces in my bank anyway. In the middle of this, I noticed that the Royal Outfit is a space now in my costume room. I checked their prices and used the last of my money to put bids on. Everything but the crown came through very quickly on the GE. Nothing else seemed to shift, but I got the Royal Outfit. Still no crown. In the end, Kayla explained why. The street price is considerably more than the GE price. How much more? About 30m more. :P The advice coming from Canting ranged from the simple to the highly complicated. Simple solutions: get level 89 hunter, drink hunting potions and go and catch Kingly Implings. The crown is the rarest of the drops, but it's a chance. Alternatively, save up 30m and go to World 2. The complicated solution involved farming wergali. Let's pause here. Wergali. It's very simple to get. You just take your weapons of choice to the north of the Gnome Stronghold until you find the tortoise training area. Kill the three tortoises. Every about third drop will be a wergali seed. Take the seed and plant it. I got 17 wergali off one seed earlier. All told, I now have 37 grimy wergali sitting in my bank. They're worth about 6k each on the GE. I was told that they're worth about 15k-20k on the street. Joshua Mack thought that, if I was very lucky, I might find someone willing to swop a crown for wergali. Hold on here. So I can sell wergali, worth 6k in the trade limit and 15k on the street, for a crown, worth 500k in the trade limit and 30m on the street... how? Do I sell the wergali first for money, then buy the crown with pure cash? Will I then receive 29.5m worth of wergali back, because the seller needs to make up the difference? For someone with as loose a grasp of maths as I have, it's a logistical nightmare. I decided to brave the dread lands, boldly meandering into that cesspit of horror and debauchary, aka World 2. World 2 scares me. It's full of people ready to laugh at any slip of mathematical idiocy. The whole place is like a banana skin on the pathway of my life. But I went there anyway with two rules in my head: 1, Do Not Speak To Anybody, they will know within a word that I'm crap at maths and will therefore try to scam me out of my green hat; and 2, Do Not Buy Any Bargains, they know more about merchanting than me and it probably isn't a bargain. I was just to listen and try, through the calls of the traders, to untangle the Mysteries of Wergali and Crowns. Well that cleared that one up then... So the crown is simultaneously going for 5m, 30m, 60m, 3 hooks or three tops and 500 unf wergali potions. Also in the time I was standing bemused in the centre of them, I saw someone selling their crown for 34m and someone else for 50m. A buyer bought a crown from a third seller for 40m. Someone turned up selling wergali unf potions for 20k each. Someone else was selling 1.5k wergali unf for 3.2m. There was someone trying to buy a crown for 10m and another for 25m. I give up. What's the price for a crown? I've sussed that my wergali needs to go into vials of water, but how many and how does this sale even happen? Will I have to go and stand in that corner, conversing with mathematical geniuses?! And while we're on the subject, what's with the junk? What precisely does 'trade junk for crap' mean? I've got 40 odd bucket of camel dung in my bank, would that have sufficed? And is it actually junk if someone is paying 10m for it? There are whole reasons why I'm not a merchanter. The utter confusion of that corner in World 2 is 90% of those reasons. Egghebrecht says to wait a while. The price of a crown will crash when the next great novelty turns up. That sounds sensible, but in the meantime, I have the rest of the royal items taking up bank space. I saw the sceptre being sold for between 1.2m and 1.7m by various players. Someone was offering the leggings for 10m. Someone else was laughed out of the corner for even attempting to sell the amulet, which is rubbish and not worth the money. Why are the leggings 10m, the sceptre around 1.something m and the crown up in the stratosphere, but the amulet not worth the pixels that drew it? I don't know! I just know that I can't afford the bank space, but I'm too scared to sell them, because they might be worth 'x' times the money I paid for them on the GE. I'm so out of my league. :D I think I'll just train my hunting until I can catch my own kingly implings. How fast can I get from 80 to 89 then?
  16. Back on December 5th, 2009, I set myself a challenge. I would learn responsible merchanting, ie flipping and things which don't manipulate the market in a bad way, and I would save up for ranger boots. I started with 1m gp, at a time when ranger boots were 19m but falling. I was hoping to meet it in the middle somewhere at 13m. Yesterday, I bought my boots. I've actually had the money to buy them for about a week. For the first few days of that week, it was reliant upon something like me selling my stockpile of runes. Then, as my money grew, I could just buy them outright. This would clean me out completely though. In the background, Egghebrecht was urging caution. There were two factors here. Ranger boots have been floating up and down between 13m and 14m for weeks. They were currently at 14.2m. He also thought it better if I used that money to continue merchanting, until I could slice off the top the money for the boots, whilst leaving a sizeable chunk to continue merchanting. It all made a lot of sense. The boots weren't going anywhere, but the money could. I continued and made my baseline 1m on top of that money. Meanwhile, Teacuptime was mentioning that ranger boots would be good against Nomad. Then the pressure was suddenly on. The ranger boots are patently either being merchanted by a clan at the moment or else they are suddenly the best boots ever, when coupled with whatever has been updated. Whichever it is, ranger boots were gaining 200k in price every day and hurtling towards the 15m mark. I came close to panic buying, but Egghebrecht still urged caution. Then Egghebrecht disappeared on a week long's partying for the Mardi Gras celebrations in his 'hood. In his place stepped Joshua Mack, who hung out on the hill, while I was training agility. As I passed, he would be putting the case for the opposing view. In Josh's opinion, ranger boots aren't going to fall in price. Robin Hoot hats are going to crash because of the Wyrm drop thingie that was released last week. This is going to encourage rangers. Rangers want boots. Ranger boots rise. At least that's what I think he said. To be honest, talk about combat equipment with me tends to sound a bit like, "Such and such item.... blah... blah....blah... combat stats.... blah... blah... blah... boosts.... blah... blah... blah.... so that's why such and such item is best for you." I know that all of the blah bits are extremely vital information, if I'm ever going to understand it all, but it doesn't tend to stick in my head. This is wrong and leads to situations like the Jade Vine Incident. I've been killing that Jade Vine since the quest came out. I do so several times a week. It doesn't change and I only get occasionally stronger. In short, I know precisely what to expect from that fight and precisely what to do in it. I wear more or less the same armour and I pray the same prayers. But just recently the fight has changed. I've gone from taking an average of 5-6 hp damage per fight to taking 25-30 hp damage per fight every single time. I've lost the quest cape, but I've substituted more. I was at a complete loss as to what was nerfing me here. In the end, I had to hunt down Somisareg, in the living rock caverns, and get him to look me over and see what I was wearing that was allowing the Jade Vine to damage me much more these days. Somisareg stopped slaughtering animated rocks and gave me the once over. He couldn't see what's wrong either. After checking that I was praying deflect/protect from melee, he concluded that the only thing he could think of is that there's been a hidden update making Jade Vine hit harder. Anyway, back to the plot. With Egghebrecht drunk in some Belgian pub somewhere; the price of ranger boots passing the 15m mark; Josh making 'blah blah combat' speeches; and Teacuptime noting the use of the boots, not only as the final addition to my treasure trail chest, but as another edge in the fight against Nomad... what could I do? I put on a bid and, several hours later, I had a fine pair of extremely expensive wellies. I paid 15,072,165 for them. One day later, they're already worth 15,300,000! They are not the only thing rising in price. Since June, I have been in a constant state of saving up for and buying treasure trail items. These have disappeared into my chest, never to be seen again, but they have been gathering value. I've noted this as I've been buying them, as prices kept rising above what I'd first seen to save up for. That seemed pretty much across the board. When I saw that Josh was on, I called him to my house and had him look in the chest. He wooted over the addition of the ranger boots, then pondered on the overall worth of the contents of that chest. That is not as easy a question to answer as it sounds. In order to check, you have to get each item out individually. There are 51 items in level 1; 44 items in level 2; and 80 items in level 3. That's 175 items all told. To get them out, you have to click on the chest; select which level from the chat box; scroll down to the item (if it's on the second page, scroll down to the bottom and click for page 2); click on the item; then start all over again for the next item. It takes forever! Josh had the time though and agreed to take care of the mathematics. After level 1, I checked that he still wanted to do this, but he did. We went on. I think it took at least a couple of centuries before we had the overall prices. All that time, those in Canting were guessing at that total. My own guess was 45m. The guesses in Canting ranged from about 12m (shouted down as the ranger boots alone were higher than that) up to about 58m. But eventually, the last of the level 3s were being returned to the chest and Josh was ready with his totals. That picture was taken shortly before I sat down in sheer shock. The level 1 items are worth 12m; the level 2 are worth 31m; and the level 3 are worth 38m. He further added that I still haven't sold my dragonfire shield which pushes my asset wealth up to 116m. This doesn't even take into account the contents of the other wardrobes and my bank. I had no idea that I was worth so much! Mind you, on the other hand, I'm not. If I sell it all, then yes I am, but while it's all sitting in my treasure trail chest, then it's potential, not actual wealth. I haven't any intention of actually selling it. :) To me, it's adding towards completing my house in the same way as upgraded furniture or stuffed heads on the wall. It's still an amazing cushion to have around me though. :)

    The Runescape Economy

Before I start, a huge shout out here to H Alger. He tracked down Teacuptime and gave him some Sara Brews for me, which Teacuptime duly delivered. ;) I am very touched by all of these gifts, though it really isn't necessary. They are very gratefully received, but I will be able to source my supplies for myself in time. I don't want to be sponging off everyone else's hard work. At this moment in time, my Nomad pwning supplies are: 700 ruby bolts (e); 102 Sara Brews (4); 21 super restores (4); 1 super restore (2); and 200 ordinary restore potions. In short, I could have at least a couple of attempts right now. I want to leave it though until I have mega supplies of Sara Brews and super restores. It's too frustrating to have a couple of attempts and then have to stop for a few days to replenish my supplies. My plan is to wait until I can seriously go for it time after time after time, until his backside is truly kicked. Thank you again to everyone who has been sending things. You're all very lovely. Now onto the business of this blog entry. A lot of my thoughts just recently have turned to the Runescape economy. I think that it fascinates me so much because I don't understand economics in general and therefore it's a great opportunity to learn something new. Despite my lack of understanding, the economy affects us so deeply inside the game. Even though I attempt to be self-sufficient, it's still there at the back of my mind. For example, I looted a snapdragon seed from an impling the other day. That snapdragon seed was always going to be planted up Trollheim, then harvested to be turned into super restores. The super restores were always going to be put into my bank for future use. The economy should have had nothing to do with that, yet I still checked the price of the seed (93k) and then the price of the herbs once I'd harvested (155k). At the back of my mind, potential earnings bubbled up and sank. Many people could consider that I received those super restores free, with an extra bonus of xp. I tend to see it as costing me whatever I could have sold them for. I'm not convinced that my perception here is the healthy one. :( Since June 2008, I've been buying items for my treasure chest, in my POH. This means that I've kept a baseline amount of 1m in my bank, but anything over that has gone on buying things that will immediately be stashed away never to see the light of day again. This has kept me poor, but has also given me an hitherto mostly ignored insight into inflation in the game. The ranger boots used to be 7m, they are now 14m; things like that. In recent months, I've been reading Sparhawke's blog and I've learned how to flip. I also have Egghebrecht and The RS Economist feeding me items to flip or information on the greater issues within the game's economy. Finally, I had a relative stung by the mint cake crash. All of these things have fuelled my desire to learn more about what's happening out there. This is a task made more difficult by the fact that I need a running jump to even start thinking about mathematics and market forces. There is undoubtedly a lot of spare gold coins sloshing around the Runescape economy as a whole. I've read some quite rabid rants on the RSOF pointing the finger in various directions. Chief amongst these are: a) The introduction of statuettes into PKing, which provide a greater revenue than the losses incurred by other players being pwned; b) The existence of the 26k and 76k tricks, which heightened further the number of statuettes being gained and traded in for money; c) The loss/reduction of the bots meaning that a mass of cheap labour disappeared, taking with them vast quantities of raw goods (ore, essence etc). As actual players were now collecting these, the supply went down considerably, while the price for which people were prepared to sell went up; d) The merchanting clans... to be honest, I'm struggling here to understand how they've inflated the economy, as they are basically pyramid schemes that ensure that the vast majority of members will lose money. I'm sure that the answer here is somewhere within what Zach was trying to impress upon me about following the money. If money is simply changing hands, then it's still in the game and still in circulation. It's only losing money if that money is somehow taken out of the game; e) The 'rares' market in W2 and its cousin the 'mint cake bubble'. As the rich become the mega-rich, then they have the personal funds to totally buy out certain markets. Hence the prices of things like party hats become so high as to be unbuyable. They demand more money for things, which causes players to work harder to accumulate junk (perhaps the stock piles which they were left holding after a merchanting clan dumped too early on them), which then becomes currency and... oh! I'm lost. Here is where my mind seems to go up against a brick wall of Economy and leaves me floundering somewhat; f) High alching creates money from thin air. If essence is also mined and crafted into the required nature runes, then this money literally is from thin air. People have been alching for years and all that money has built up; g) The GE price caps. I've heard conflicting views on this. Some people say that the caps have destroyed the market. Their existence means that items continue to be sold player to player in the trading worlds and therefore the street prices can fluctuate drastically. This is bad. Other people say that the caps are saving the economy. This is good; h) The lack of effective money sinks. In the past, PKing used to take a lot of money out of the game, as people died frequently in their armour and had to replace it. Skills like Construction were added as money sinks, but they have failed. I'm level 84 and I'm in the top 9000 players in that skill. That means that only 9000 people, out of a game with 8m accounts, have forked out the money that I have. Even fewer have thrown away the millions required to reach 99. Similarly, as the price of dragon bones has risen, then fewer people train prayer. Runescape players, on the whole, do not like throwing away their cash. They hoard and stockpile items until they find a bargain. Those are the main places where people seemed to be placing the blame. I've been revisiting historical periods, like the Weimer Republic, where hyperinflation meant that people needed wheelbarrows to carry the cash necessary to buy a loaf of bread. I've been haunting Wikipedia, looking up precisely what words like hyperinflation and inflation generally mean. They all look very familiar. I was particularly struck by the realities of hyperinflation, where the governments attempt to stem it with price controls (GE anyone?), whilst printing money to cope with the spiralling costs of everything (drops, high alching, raw materials etc), resulting in a devaluing of the currency leading directly to people putting their trust in assets (like those items in my treasure chest?) and ignoring the usual flow of hard cash in order to barter with goods (mint cakes and junk trading). I was also looking at the causes of hyperinflation. This often occurs after a war, as in the case of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hungary, Germany etc. While it may not look like we've been at war in Runescape, we most certainly have. We went to war on real world trading. I've drawn direct parallels here between the loss of mineral rich areas and means of production, after the Versailles Treaty, which so crippled the Weimar Republic, and the loss of the bots in Runescape, which has had an almost identical effect on the Runescape economy. The Germans in the 1920s were wallpapering their walls with marks; the modern Runescape equivalent would be to melt down down mint cakes to make a huge chocolate fountain in the middle of Varrock. I didn't think that the Runescape economy affected me too much, except as general background noise. With all of this information buzzing around my head though, I've looked to my gameplay. I'm no great merchanter and I have no real awareness of market forces, so this, I think, would be the chronicle of many players. Those who are just reacting without considering the bigger pictures or trying to predict the future of their assets. I've found that I need more money. I had two things factored in here: unsuccessfully fighting Nomad nearly bankrupted me (was Nomad a money sink? He's cost a lot of players a lot of money); and my desire to buy ranger boots. The former caused me to stop, take stock and then think about how I can create the supplies without spending so much money. If it was a money sink, therefore, it was temporary. It was a short, sharp shock to the economy, but the long term might even be detrimental. Why? Because if I defeat Nomad on my first attempt with all of these 'free' supplies, then what am I likely to do next? Flood the market with excess supplies, because they are all things that are currently selling at a premium and I have acquired the knowledge of sourcing them cheaply/free. Give a woman a Sara Brew and she will be good for one fight; give a woman the knowledge of sourcing her own Sara Brews and she will not only be good for life, but will also swamp an already saturated market with goods. The ranger boots are in a different class. I've watched them shoot up from 7m to 14m in a short period of time. I momentarily watched them go to 18m, but then they settled back to 13m-15m and have stayed put. A year ago, I would have had to save up 7m. It would have taken time, but I would have got there eventually. The same could be said about 14m, you just double the time. But the damage comes in watching how quickly it rises. If I wait too long, will I have to save up 21m? That causes a low level panic, so I looked for other means to make money faster. Thus it is that, after 3 years of playing, I've finally been dabbling in merchanting. I've been flipping items and raking off the profit. I've also taken advice on managing my kingdom, which is a facet of the game that I've ignored for years. Merchanting has seen my initial investment of 1m grow into 12m over only a couple of months. Meanwhile, look at my second foray into Miscellania: That represents two days outlay at 75k each and there was also a clue scroll, which netted me a blue elegant skirt and a studded leather body worth around 68k. In short, I just made about 1.1m after spending 150k. It's printing money! I've also looked at my hoarding practices. With inflation having taken law and death runes over the 400gp each mark, I'm loathe to cash in mine now for much less. This had led to me still runecrafting, but stockpiling the resultant runes in my bank until the price is right. I'm guessing that I'm not alone in that. This means that the supply is becoming a little more scarce (until the runecrafting update caused a flux in the opposite direction, of course), but also means that one day, when I'm desperate, I'm going to flood the market with 1000s of runes. I'm not quite sure what the solutions are. Zach suggested that everyone in game dump half of their money. Teacuptime came up with a wonderful idea about an auction room. I came up with the next holiday event giving us all party hats, so that the only way that you could tell that one was an original was to store it in a player owned house (with an update to facilitate that), hence loads of people would train Construction. You can see now why Zach and Teacuptime are seen as better sources of economic advice than I am. ;) I have heard a lot of people hoping and praying to their Gods that the next skill will be a money sink, but Andrew Gower's last Q&A said that it wouldn't be. I guess that we wait and see. Simple's counter-argument is here: Economics.

    The Mint Cake Fiasco

I saw a quite remarkable sight last night, as I nipped in to check on my GE bids just before bed. It was world 84, so not a big merchanting world, but every second person seemed to be trying to buy or sell mint cakes. I was already aware that there was an issue, because I read The RS Economist. I'd made a mental note to mention the situation to Jdeh Rhyfela and ODST Isaac, both of whom I know have mint cakes, but then put it out of my mind until then. For those not in the loop, the situation seem to be that mint cakes are worth about 20k on the GE, but several million in world 2/street prices. They weren't particularly rare, but were highly uncommon. Everyone finishing 'The Path of Glouphrie' gets a free mint cake. It's also a semi-rare reward from the Gnome Restaurant minigame. I had one after the quest and nommed it there and then, thinking of Kendal. It wasn't even thought of as a merchanting gem back then. I'm not savvy enough about the lores and tides of junk trading to know why it ever became such a sought after item. I certainly don't understand how such a difference in price can exist between GE and street. Nevertheless, it happened and that's been the way of the world until this week. One of the updates on Monday made the mint cake a more common reward in the Gnome Restaurant. In all honesty, that didn't even make a blip on my radar. I don't have a mint cake and I was too busy happy dancing over the increased trade limits. I'd heard that, if both parties had completed all quests and had been friends for over 3 months, then the trade limit was now 180k. Hurrah. I should have been paying attention. Last night (Tues), I stood in shock watching the mix of emotions in the GE. It was a crowded world, though not a trading one, and the thing that was starkly apparent was that there was no consensus of opinion. One person was selling mint cake for minimum in the GE and telling us so; next to him was someone else selling mint cake for 1.4m each, via junk trading. Others were rushing around buying every bargain mint cake that they could get their hands on. To the credit of the sellers, I didn't see a single transaction taking place without the seller warning the buyer that mint cakes were crashing. The bubble had burst. I saw one high level player laughing in glee, as he bought up 35 mint cake at 100k each. He told them that they were idiots, because it would stabilise. Mint cakes were rocking right now, but they would resume their original position. Someone else agreed, comparing them to strange fruit. Three strange fruit spawn every 15 mins near Brimhaven. Apparently strange fruit are another favourite of the junk traders. Here and there, though, were upset players screaming vengeance upon Jagex and all who sail in her. There was a sole player moderator standing in the middle of it all. She didn't appear to be alching, fletching or anything else. She was acting as a public information service. She calmly answered every question, however confused or angry; stating with infinite patience, over and over again, 'Mint cakes were traded as rares. They are freely available by playing the Gnome Restaurant minigame.' I wish I'd taken her name, as she really did meet a lot of abuse with simple facts and calm. 'If you can keep your head, while all about you, people are losing their's and blaming you...' As I said, this doesn't directly affect me, though I do have a upset relative for whom it has. I just wanted to record it here, as a moment of Runescape history. We all get so used to a consensus in merchanting. When things crash, everyone sells. This is the first time I've ever seen it where no-one seemed entirely sure what to do. As many mint cakes were bought as sold, though none of them for millions. For those affected by it, what are we advising them? The RS Economist says to sell. So far, that's the message that I've passed on to mine. Many thanks to Wafflezor and the other members of Icey Dan1's chat channel, who went through the issue in detail with me. I feel much more knowledgable on it now.

    Skill Log Or Just Blog?

I've started merchanting and don't really train skills as much anymore so should I close my log and just put my achievements/important things on my blog? I think I might do so becuase I really can't be bothered with my log anymore. Vote for which you would chose.

    Merchanting Round One: The Results

Last week, I announced that I was dipping my toe into merchanting. I've been working on it all week and I finally have some results. My first three buys were epic fails, because no-one would sell me anything. I put a bid on for maple seeds, then for steel armour sets (sk), then for more maple seeds. All of these were as the result of pouring over graphs, then giving up and asking Sparhawke to have a look for me. :D Normally though, it was the next day before he got my message and I'd already put my bid on. It didn't matter. There's currently a worldwide shortage of maple seeds and steel armour sets. Probably because the real merchanters bought them out while I was still grappling with the graphs. The fourth buy was as a result of a Sparhawke tip-off. That was highly successful in that I bought some. I got 6 blue dhides at 2350gp each. However, it was a fail insofar as I didn't read the tip-off properly. The item was going down. This means that it was still up. They'd actually descended to 2308gp each before they appeared to be rising again. I immediately rushed into the GE and bought 216 of them for 498,528 + the original six at 14,100gp = 512,628gp outlay. They just fell to 2307 each, so I panic sold at 512,376gp. So that was a loss of 252gp. >.> Could have been worse... I shouldn't have panic sold, should I? Then you get to the fifth buy, which was a lot more complicated, but I'm quietly pleased about. First of all, I noticed that toadflax was due to rise again. Den the Men had also commented on how cheap seeds were at the moment. I nipped to the GE and bought 220 grimy toadflax @ 4809 each = 1,057,980gp. I also bought 30 seeds @ 2323gp = 696902gp. The latter particularly makes me smile because that's the lowest that they did get. They rose in price again the next day. It took all of one night and most of the next day for the grimy toadflax to be sold to me, but the seeds arrived instantly. With both of them, I used Sparhawke's trick of how to price your offer. They weren't dead on the mid-range price. The outlay price was therefore: 1,127,670. I spent the next few days planting and harvesting the toadflax seeds. Only one died on me, though I used every herb patch available to me. I also cleaned up the grimy herbs, so that I had a pile of clean ones. These were placed into water-filled vials, again on Sparhawke's recommendation, while I poured over graphs for the optimum selling point for toadflax vials (unf). I figured that it was 5,700gp. Eventually, my seeds were all harvested and herbs all in water-filled vials. I had 523 of them to sell, which meant that I'd also spent 2528 on water-filled vials, bringing my final outlay price to: 1,130,198gp. It was a waiting game. It seemed like a long waiting game. Two days ago, the price had risen to 5456 and I was all excited. It meant that probably one more day would hit my target 5700 and I could sell. It didn't happen. Yesterday, the price was the same as the day before, so I nearly panic sold. I decided that only noobs do that, so I held onto them. This morning, Sparhawke nipped into Canting, so I glomped him with the question: if the price isn't rising to your target price, do you sell? He informed me that items don't make it to target prices all the time. Sometimes, it's better to sell early and move onto another item that's moving more quickly. His items are usually processed within a day or two. I ummed and arred too long. The GE updated and the price had fallen! ;) I panic sold now, oh yes. You've never seen a green hat enter the GE so fast! It was only down to 5444gp, but my imagination supplied the roller-coaster down the other side. I put them on for 5gp less than the mid-range price and they sat there. They sat there all afternoon and throughout the evening. Then suddenly they sold. YES! I've got 2,844,597gp back from 1,130,198gp outlay. Good start?

Making Money In My Runescape Today

While making money in Runescape has always been a factor, until recently it was a means to an end. It was never the end in itself. Somewhere in between Grand Exchange Central, Sparhawke's Runescape Money Guild and the RS Economist, I've been experimenting with simply making money. It's not all that I'm doing and it's still very much a sideline, but it has made me focus more on how I make money. These days, I've noticed that I can make a million gp within a few days just by going about my business. If I really tried, then I could make this faster. It helps that I've been focussing a lot on farming and slayer just recently. Ignore the dragonfire shield at the moment, because it's not sold and therefore is only potential money. I'm talking about the other stuff. At the end of each day, I'll meander over to the GE and throw in all the stuff that I've accumulated to sell while I've been out and about. It can range from a pile of onions from farming through to monster drops. I'm also in the habit of picking up everyone else's random junk off the GE floor and selling it. You'd be amazed at how many times I do that and it sells instantly. It might only be a couple of hundred gp, but that all adds up. Right now I'm in a lovely position. For a start, my merchanting practice has finally yielded a product stocked up and waiting for the market to be right to sell. I spent some time researching and came up with several items, but failed utterly on buying the first three. It wasn't for want of trying. I had my bids up, but no-one was selling. Presumably because the real merchanters had already spotted them and bought them up, while I was still wrestling with graphs and trying to remember what the blue line was all about. Ok, tangent. The blue line in GE graphs is purportedly the average sales. So you can read it as the real demand for that item. The yellow line is what is actually happening. If yellow spikes miles above the blue line, then you know that a merchanting clan probably has their paws on it. If it drops below the blue line, then the merchanters are about to start buying it. I'm fine with that, I'm just very hazy on where the data comes from for the blue line. It can't be actual sales, because that's the yellow line. It can't be the meridian between the lowest price ever and the highest price ever, because surely that would just be a straight line. Is it something to do with possible supply and demand? For example, coconuts - the blue line is the level between the number of farmers able to plant palm trees versus the number of herblorists able to use coconuts in potions? I don't know. It's all a mystery to me. Maybe it's a kind of dado rail, in case anyone wants to use the graph as their wallpaper. <_< Back to the plot. I had about 200k to play with in merchanting, but enough people convinced me that that was silly, that I eventually plundered my reserve money. I put in just over 1m gp in buying up a lot of grimy toadflax herbs and 30 seeds, while they were all still cheap. I cleaned up the grime and I'm busy planting the seeds. All clean toadflax is going into water-filled vials and the whole is being stockpiled. I've used Sparhawke's tips to give myself a selling price. Now I'm just waiting for it to get there. If all goes according to plan, then this will be my first successful merchanting venture. In the meantime, all this merchanting learning has been feeding into my ordinary gameplan. Every day I go and pick up 150 pure ess from Wizard Cromperty. That stacks up and eventually I'll do a runecrafting run, whilst watching 'Paradox'. Before now, I would have come home and just thrown the lot into the GE. This time, I researched first the best runes to craft. I then ignored that research, because it said 'deaths' and I can't concentrate on the Abyss AND 'Paradox'. Noob rune prices. >:D But the point is that I did research it. :/ The second point is that I didn't then just dump the runes into the GE. My research told me that law runes are dropping at the moment. If I hang onto the ones that I made, then I'll be able to sell them for a higher price when they rise again. That looks like merchanting mindset to me! *awaits a medal* Then you get the items that I started off talking about. Those random things that turn up during an ordinary day. The crops and drops; the junk and the impling catch spoils; the things that I've crafted or spun or hunted or fletched. These didn't look like something earned through knowledge, until I sat and properly thought about it. I realised that I'm standing on the shoulders of giants here. I've taken bits of advice over the years and applied it. Now I'm reaping the rewards. I think of when I first arrived in Gielinor. I'd never played anything like this before, so I looked to see how Audina played. She tried to keep her levels level, so I did too. I still do. These days that means that I have a variety of sources to fall back upon and they are all high enough to yield profitable things. For example, when herblore went from being profitable to being a money sink, I could side-step into something else. Thank you, Audina, for the 'keeping your levels level' advice. I think of Simple telling me to be self-sufficient. At one time I'd make or collect things and immediately try to sell them for hard gold pieces. Simple taught me the sense in stockpiling stuff. While others may become bankrupt under the need to buy super restores or mahogany planks, I have them in my bank. Every snapdragon picked up from a drop or grown could have been money in the bank, instead it's a super restore that I may one day use. I'm unaffected by the rise and fall in prices of things like prayer potions, because I have the herblore level and the stockpile in the bank. I'm forever seeing people screaming things like 'necklace amulet 5k!!!' I've got 10 sitting there. That person wasting money like that will probably never be me. Thank you, Simple, for the 'be self-sufficient' advice. I think of Reaver telling me that time means money. Repeatedly. Sometimes following me around saying it. Notably once coming into my house and standing next to me, as I plundered the tool cabinet 28 times for whatever was selling well at the time. Reaver pointing out that the time I was wasting doing such things, I could be out there earning proper money doing something much better. At the time, I was full of 'yeah, yeah, yeah', but time has proved him right. I recently looked at how much money would be saved if I went to the sawmill and made my own oak planks, as opposed to buying at the GE. It was considerable. However, it wasn't as considerable as the money I could have made on a runecrafting run, during the same time. It would more than pay the excess, plus it would give me runecrafting xp. Thank you, Reaver, for the incessant trolling of 'time is money'. You were right in the end. There have been many more people with much more advice over the years, but I think that those three were the biggest. They've kept me in good stead. But over-riding all is that extremely important advice, which was first given to me years ago by Teacuptime, then reiterated last night by Joshua Mack. That advice was that Runescape is supposed to be fun. It's a place to kick back, chill and let yourself have a great time. Sometimes the sensible way forward isn't the same as the fun one. If you're hanging onto a item or attempting to buy one, whilst fretting about it dropping or falling, or you not timing it right, then only the merchanting junkies are having fun. For the rest of us, let it go. In illustration, I think it was at the time of the marble portal holders that Teacuptime said it. I had spent 3m gp on them, which was during a time of my life when 3m constituted weeks of work, if not months. People were screaming at me that it was foolish to spend that on 'changing the colour of my portal holders', as Teacuptime again put it. LOL I was diplomatically ignoring everyone, when Teacuptime piped up that the marble portal holders gave me pleasure. Therefore they were precisely the correct way to have spent my money. It's a game, it's meant to be fun. Last night, Joshua Mack asked me this question. He said, 'If you could have anything at all in Runescape and money was no object, what would you have?' I immediately replied, 'A KBD head', as that's been the stock answer for years. He LOLed and ticked that off the list as already got. 'What else?' He prompted. I thought about it. Right now, gilded armour and ranger boots to complete my treasure chest set; plus the ability for lephrachauns to accept plant pots, so I can stash all those dropped by other farmers, whilst on my farming run. Ideally potted trees too, but I'm not greedy. I've thought about it since and I'd really like a savings account too. So that I could have my spending money in one space in the bank, but if I was saving up for something, then I could keep that money separate. However, that doesn't detract from what Josh said next. He asked again if I had anything to add. I mused on some Construction levels, but, by now, it was obvious I was scraping the barrel of my dreams and desires. He replied, 'Then sell the dragonfire shield, Merch. If gilded armour and ranger boots would make this game for you, then sell the dragonfire shield. Runescape is supposed to be fun.' Yeah, it is.
  23. I am traditionally extremely bad at merchanting. From the old days of not selling things whilst standing in banks to the modern version of not at all reading the market. My merchanting skills make my combat skills look good. My general rule of thumb is to see what the clans are manipulating into high profit, then farm it. Yes, you read that correctly. There is always a merchanting clan somewhere targeting something that can be farmed. I bought full Guthans and a multi-cannon on the proceeds of them bumping up toadflax seed. I've just saved up 5m on the proceeds of them bumping up coconuts and papaya. What should happen now is that the 5m goes on what I planned for it: Saradomin armour (sk). However, I have being trying to be savvy about these things. I joined Grand Exchange Central to learn about the market with safe money and fake items. I'm doing alright there. It has taught me to pay attention to the graphs. It was the information learned there which had me pausing before buying the Saradomin armour. The armour was at 5.1m, but that was the highest it had ever been. Not too long ago, it was 4.5m. Last June, it was 3.2m. Now it had stalled at 5.1m and wasn't going anywhere. I hesitated and hesitated. I kept asking People Who Know Markets, but none of them had any advice on the matter. It could go either way. So I waited and woot! It started falling! I wouldn't have waited if it hadn't been for my suspicions, based in my learning from the Mock GE. It's given me heart that I could be more knowledgeable about merchanting. It's not just the preserve of those who speak maths. Then, smack bang in the middle of this waiting game, came a second bit of news. The one and only Sparhawke has created a Rs money related blog! In my mind, Sparhawke has always been the pinacle of Runescape money-making knowledge. If you go back through some of my merchanting blogs, you'll often see things like, 'What would Sparhawke do?' The conclusion generally being the opposite of whatever I subsequently did. I recall him trying to explain merchanting things in the Sal's forum and he led everyone on a big experiment using fire runes. It wasn't a merchanting clan thing, this was before all of that, it was a watching the market thing. A lot of people got rich and no-one who participated lost money. I didn't join in, because it looked like maths. So here I am, finally with the will and confidence to pay attention to the market. By an accident of divine providence (ta Guthix), Sparhawke chooses this moment to launch Runescape Money Guild. He's written his blogs in language so simple that even I understand what he's saying. I'm going to try it. :( Here's my plan: I have 5.1m to play with, but that's to buy my Saradomin Armour (sk). I'm going to keep my eye on that and buy it when I think it's not going to fall any more. I'm obviously open to suggestions on when you think I should be buying. >.> It was 5.1m two days ago, it's 4.9m now. After it's bought, the money that I saved between 5.1m and the purchase price is going to be my merchanting money. Currently that's 200k. I've failed before I start if that armour now goes up again. When I have my money, I'm going to be working my way through Sparhawke's tips on Runescape Money Guild until I have enough money for Ranger Boots. They soared to 19m recently, but they're falling again. How's that for an ambitious challenge for myself? I'll keep everyone informed on here, mostly so that you can run in front of me, as I'm heading to the GE, screaming 'Stttttoooooppppp! Go back and re-read Sparhawke's blog! You're doing it wrong!' But I'm going to give it a go. Wish me luck! There are still a handful of slots to fill, mainly during the American evening, while the Europeans are fast asleep. Anyone got anything for them please? Parade? Scavenger hunt? Mass farming run? Nature ramble? Soup kitchen?

    Old Time Trading

I don't usually dream about Runescape, but I woke up with the distinct feeling that I had. No real story, just my waking thoughts holding an impression of that old time trading. It got me thinking about how things have changed. For those who have started playing during the last two years, there was a time before the Grand Exchange. In order to sell anything, you had to stand in banks shouting out your wares. You quickly learned to match your wares to the bank. For example, if whatever you were selling was useful to PKers, then you could get more money for it in Edgeville Bank than in Seers' Bank. Prices seemed to rise and fall much more slowly than they do today, because any changes had to spread largely via word of mouth. Everyone and their dog used the price database on Rune HQ. I hated it, because I had an extremely laggy computer, which screamed in protest if I attempted to open two windows. Rune HQ was full of adverts and their database took forever for me to load. It really hindered me, when I was trying to swoop in on a suspected bargain. I'd be more likely to shout into Canting, 'Omg! Can someone look up the price of a rune long, please?!' Someone on a faster computer would shout back and I'd be good for decisions on purchases. (Thank you Dan_Daa_Man for reminding me which website it was that we looked up. I couldn't remember if it was TipIt or RuneHQ, I could just recall that it wasn't my lovely Sal's, which didn't crash my PC.) Even now, I have a mental benchmark of prices for those things which I sold then. A ring of life is 10k; prayer potions (4) are 8k in Seers' Bank or 10k in Edgeville Bank. You're more likely to sell lower range armour in Lumbridge Bank. You're more likely to sell anything in Fally Park. I was so bad at it. Because all banks were a cacophony of people selling things, I'd invariably hear some bargain being called out. I'd end up buying it and so spending more than I made. Merchanting was a chore for me, so I'd wait until I had a bag full of stuff to sell, then put aside a whole day's playing to try and sell it. I always remember Pen Knee giving up on me and coming to take my whole merchandise off me. She'd sold it all in about an hour. Most of my selling came from walking into banks and hearing someone desperately screaming, "Buying tinderbox 5k!!!!!!!1111111111!!!!" So I'd sell them a tinderbox. You still hear a watered down version of it around the GE now. Which brings me to neatly to something else that I've noticed in-game. When I was a kid, if someone was yelling out a price, then that was the price I was selling my 'whatever I was selling' at. Take that tinderbox for 5k. If they put up 5k, they had the tinderbox. If they put up the 1gp that it's probably worth, I'd keep my tinderbox. (Well, actually, I'd probably sell it anyway, but you get my point! If it was a rarer, more expensive item, then yes.) Somewhere along the way, I must have passed some invisible psychological line. Perhaps it comes with combat level or with money in the bank; probably it comes with earning potential (as in 'I can make x amount in 20 mins, rather than the PKing EP). It means that you enter a kind of trading dance with people, depending upon their combat level. Just consider this for yourself: 1, Scenario one: A level 33 player is calling out that he needs a sapphire. He's willing to pay 5k for it. 2, Scenario two: A level 138 player is calling out that he needs a sapphire. He's willing to pay 30k for it. You have sapphires in your bank. What do you do? What do you do if they're standing next to each other? I'm guessing that your responses to that scenario will utterly depend upon your own earning potential/combat level/money in the bank. I personally am not going to take 5k off a level 33 player for a sapphire. The dude needs that 5k far more than I do. It could be like a week's wages for him, while I could possibly make it in seconds. *thinks* Ok, the time it takes me to use the Varrock spirit tree to Brimhaven, run to the farming patch and pick two coconuts, then return to the GE. That's the time it takes for me to make 5k. The dude can have the sapphire. Where it gets more interesting is with the level 138. I'm level 115 and I can make a reasonable amount of money fairly quickly. At 138, this dude has probably been playing longer than me and it's reasonable to assume that he can make money even faster. The very fact that he's buying a sapphire for 30k is a big clue there. Do I glomp him for it? Hell no. And that's where I'm fascinated by the psychology! For what really happens, let me describe a real (RS) life event that occurred yesterday. I was in Edgeville Bank and a player named Jamiegavin started calling out that he needed 5 pints of cider. He was willing to pay 30k for it. The place is full of high levelled players, all pinging or scratching away with their various bank-bound tasks. I didn't reply until I'd taken a couple of trips to the smithy and back, as I didn't have any cider. He was still calling when I'd finished crafting my amulets. Now I spoke up. I asked if he had access to Miscellania. He didn't. He hadn't done the quest. No problem. I grabbed my dramen staff and had him follow me to the fairy ring. It took me all of a minute or so to use the rings to get to Misc, run into the pub and return with cider. They cost me 2gp each. Which meant that I'd spent a grand total of 10gp on procuring Jamiegavin's cider. Back in the bank, he was offering 30k. The trade box is telling us that it's worth 1010gp all told. So how much was going to change hands, between two players evenly matched in combat level? I traded and immediately pressed 'accept'. This was a present. He put up 20k and pressed accept. I accepted again and the deal was made. That is so typical of such trades! I didn't know Jamiegavin. Had that been, say, Zach, there would have been an exchange of >:( at each other, until he removed the 20k. With a stranger, I think that there is an unspoken conversation going on. Jamiegavin and I were subtly saying to each other, 'I am wealthy and I'm a friendly fellow player.' If he had accepted the gift without paying, then that would have been fair enough. That would have been an acceptance of aid from one veteran to the next; a nudge of 'remember the old camaderie, before that December 10th.' By paying me above the odds, he was saying, 'It's ok, I'm wealthy'. By not paying me the extra 10k, he was further saying, 'I recognise that you're wealthy too'. It's a nod of respect that would be almost bad manners for me not to accept. In truth, Jamiegavin could have put up any sum of money up to 30k (or not), except 1010gp. That would have turned it into a baseline trade that didn't acknowledge the fact that I specifically went out of my way to get it for him. Does that make any sense? It like an unspoken etiquette and the borderline between 'you're definitely not paying me for this' and 'ok, we'll have the trading dance thing' rises the higher my own combat level/means rises. At one time, anyone above level 50 was high level. These days, I think that the border is somewhere around the late 80s/90. I've been doing it without thinking about it until the last couple of days, now that I've noticed it, it's everywhere! Just watch and see next time you're having an ad hoc trade outside the GE. As you're doing it, look at your own expectations and then measure them against what happens. I love uncovering things like this, which you won't find in any knowledge base.

Robin Hood Hat And A Wolf Mask

I am so pleased with myself. I have a Robin Hood hat AND a Wolf Mask. They're both, of course, safely stashed in my house now. The background here is that, in June, I decided that I wanted to have a full costume room in my house. I'd already got the furniture, so I was talking about the contents of all of those wardrobes, chests and boxes. It seemed to me to be a nice little adjunct to the Construction skill that would also introduce me to a lot of new minigames. It did. Trouble Brewing is the notable example there. However, acquiring the contents of the treasure trail chest proved expensive. I justified it in three ways: a) it was filling up my chest and therefore was helping make my house up to its highest level; b) I'd never again have that dilemma, upon completing a clue scroll with a rare reward, as to whether to keep or sell (once I had them all, I could automatically sell); and c) they are investments. The latter came in after I'd bought all of the cheap items, then started to look at the mid-range. My memory isn't enough to keep track of everything, so I spent a hour listing them all, then writing down the prices beside them. Once I'd got a bit of money, I'd look to see what matched the money that I'd got, then put a bid on in the GE. It didn't take me long to realise that treasure trail items rise in price all of the time. Take the Robin Hood hat. The first time I noted the price it was 2.4m. It's now 3.9m, in just 5 months. The wolf mask was just 1.2m, now it's 2m. It's been up as high as 2.2m. Again that is in just 5 months. People are forever asking me where I get my money. Farming, runecrafting and slayer, I reply, in that order. This has certainly been the case here. During the past week, I've bought a multicannon, which I intended to sell back. I had a few people tell me not to, so it's still in my bank. With the proceeds of the scarabite slayer task, plus the fact that coconuts are currently so high that a single run nets me 40k (it goes up to 50k, if I manage to snag 3 strange fruits along the way), I now have 1m in the bank again. No need to sell the cannon to re-establish my emergency money. I still haven't sold the dragon platelegs, because they went down in price by 50k just after I'd received them. Looking at the marketing history, they tend to drop and rise once a month. This time next month, they will be 1m again and I'll sell them. I was able to do that because my slayer and farming profits had pushed me up to 2m gp. Then I did some runecrafting. Runecrafting is confusing me at the moment! Nats have definitely dropped. They're currently 298gp each, from 312gp at the time of the update. That's still a lot of profit if I did them. I'm getting my essence for free from Wizard Cromperty, plus I can get 30%-40% extra nats in a run. On the other hand, Deaths give me more xp and are currently worth 398 each. That's even more of a profit. Even better still, laws are 433, so they are the option for sheer profit, while not giving as much xp as Deaths. Meanwhile, I've discovered the wonder xp that is the ZMI altar. It used to be so simple. I'd runecraft whatever was going to bring in the most money. Now I'm running around like a headless chicken with options. It took me a good 20 mins to decide to do laws last night. I had an abyssal lurker, so I went through the abyss. Saradomin wouldn't let me onto Entrana. So I switched to Deaths. I did a few runs, but with the nagging feeling that I was doing it wrong. I ended up at the ZMI altar instead, doing a load there. But four pouches and a lurker takes a lot of unpacking time, as the sheer amount of runes you get from ZMI fills half of your bag. It's all too hard for a nub like me. :P However, returning with loads of runes, I shoved them onto the GE along with my latest coconuts. The ruined dragon shard was also up in price, to the highest that it's ever been. I tentatively put that on too and it sold. I suddenly had over 6m in the bank, what with one thing and another. I just stared at it for the longest time, then used it in the way that I'd been planning for weeks. I bought a Robin Hood hat, for its mid-range price of 3,878,086. That was soon sold to me. I put it on. It looked weird. I swopped back to my pointy, green hat. That looked right. I put the Robin Hood hat into my treasure trail chest. The wolf mask was worth 2m, but I didn't have enough for that. I compromised by putting a bid on for it's minimum value. To my shock, it was bought for a mere 1,886,537. I immediately price checked it and it was worth 1,985,829. I'm a bargain hunter! That's now also in my house. All of this leaves me with only three items left to get: ranger boots; Saradomin armour; and gilded armour. Basically 20m worth of items right there. :D I'm well pleased with myself though for getting all of the rest. ;) In the other news: At the bloggers' party, Vaskor told me about Google Reader. That's how he keeps up with all of the blogs. I'd been looking for a RSS feed that did that, because, basically, live bookmarks is rubbish (or isn't working, I'm not sure). Yesterday, I bit the bullet and made a Google account. I then started the long process of adding all of the blogs I read/should read to it. 81 blogs later, I'd finally finished. However, loads of those are Sal's blogs and they were just listed in one long 'Sal's Realm of....' with the names of the blogs at the end, where I couldn't see. I worked out how to rename them, so that took another half an hour. Some, though, wouldn't add on at all. CCFCBoy, Brock, Hawk, Pen, Pepsimax and MagicofWoodcut, all appeared, but there was an error message saying that their URL was wrong. In the meantime, another list of people refused to be added at all. I'd put in their URLs and nothing would happen. They are: Kayla, Dr Skull, Fram Roper/Tiddyn, Irplop, Josh, Lilshu, Thingie, Uno, Vogrinjr, Lightslei, Mohorak and -82-. Does anyone with a knowledge of Google Reader and/or Sal's know what I'm doing wrong here? The links to all of those are in the left-hand column, if you want to test for yourself. Now they're all in, I've got to see the wonder that is the reader. This morning, it told me who had updated and who hadn't. I was able to make my way through 'my' blogs in the time it took to have a cup of tea. :D
