Which 10 songs have you listened to the most? Share them here, and maybe compare them to the ones you posted back in 2011?

For most of us pop music really began when Elvis Presley first hit the stage on the Ed Sullivan show, or when the Beatles released their first single, or maybe even later. We don't really care about what happened before this time because the music is for old people and is boring. The only time we ever listen to this stuff is during Christmastime, for example Bing Crosby's "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas." It is somewhat ironic that we love many of these Christmas songs, but many of us write out other songs of the genre as boring without giving them much of a chance. Over here in America we tend to call this stuff the Great American Songbook, which is an ethnocentric and misleading title because there were a lot of European influences in the genre as well. I tend to think of it more as traditional pop for that reason and I tend to believe most Europeans consider it that instead of the Great American Songbook. These songs tend to get the label that they are all based on love, which is mostly true, but sometimes the songwriters went out of these bounds to write about taboo subjects. For example, Cole Porter's song "Love for Sale" was about prostitution. It was so taboo that it was banned from radio airplay (this was 1930) but still became popular enough to be mentioned on a Runescape forum 80+ years in the future. I first became aware of this forgotten generation of music when my father got XM (satellite) radio. For whatever reason he began to listen to this station called 40s on 4 where they basically played songs of this genre recorded in the 40s. I hated it at first and am still not a big fan now because the quality of 40s recording is usually bad, but at least it exposed me to large amounts of songs of this style. I eventually began learning about this genre (through wikipedia) and started listening to radio that played clean (as in not with static) recordings of these songs. I was wondering what you guys thought of this genre. I have some personal favorites. My favorite song of all time comes from this genre. It's called "My Ship" and is written by Kurt Weil and Ira Gershwin. I knew of this song before I did some research of the genre but it didn't become my favorite until I was more familiar with the genre. There are lots of versions out there but my favorite is Miles Davis' version. Its a bit long though (~8 minutes) and merged with another song. I was able to find a pretty standard version of the song on youtube if you are interested in listening to it. Other songs I like are I've Got You (Under My Skin) - Porter September in the Rain - Warren/Dubin One for my Baby (and one more for the Road) -Arlen/Mercer Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Kern/Harbach The Lady is a Tramp - Rodgers/Hart There are others too, but I don't feel like boring you here. Anyway, post your favorites even if they are Christmas songs. And I know I sound like some snob here but in reality I know nothing more about this genre than some of you know about classic rock or hip hop. And I like those genres as well but I also like this one too. Most importantly, if you are going to take one thing from this too long topic, this musical genre is not for artsy people. It's music for people.

We've come through ages of music, as technology has developed our abilities to produce music and even recreate sounds has come to a stage where humans can at least digitally reproduce any noise they hear. More recently we've had "decades" of music that changed, whether it be dance, brit-pop, jazz, swing, rock, metal and tons of other genres backed by the cultures of the world. From the digital age onwards, the music industry has explored so many more genres and more are likely on their way. This being said, do you think there will be a time where there just wont be a time to make new music? I do think as we progress, music is categorized and blended into older categories. New genres of music seem to come and go, mostly down to popularity. There is no doubt, we have revisited decades in terms of style and all music borrows certain elements of the past. I'd say most notably the 1980's we have seen quite a lot of style from that decade, focusing mostly on indie bands but reaching out into the rock scene. In the last couple of years we have seen a surge in dubstep, drum and bass and other types of beat-music. There is no doubt that the younger generations are going to be grandparents listening to all sorts of music. There used to be quite a big between elders and youngsters, but technology and music seem to be bridging that gap. tl:dr - Will we run out of new music genres? What will music be like in the future?

Here's the obligatory vid for being in the other screenshots/vids forum but anyway, I'm more interested in this: My vid contains neither of those music tracks. In fact, the only music track I used in the vid was "Ga'al", a track from Runescape itself. However, there is no way to claim that youtube's copyright detection made a mistake and that I have not used any 3rd party music. Wat do??

I've listened to this song so many times. Thought I'd share.

Was thinking about which songs I would choose to define the sound of the 90ies, the period in which I discovered "music", started to go out, really the sound of my generation. And to make it hard, limit myself to only 5 songs, because it's easy to keep listing but not easy to choose. First the song that made me think about this was Glycerine by Bush, pretty much a one hit wonder, but what a song! The second song I immediatly thought about and, for me, THE band of the 90ies: Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with butterfly wings http://youtube.com/watch?v=dxNX_PRqhCQ Nirvana, a 90ies list can't be serious without them and "Smells like teen spirit" is the song. Personally I can't stand that song anymore :( However I really like the perfomance they played on MTV unplugged with as a high point the David Bowie cover "The man who sold the world". Over to the music most people my generation think about when they think about the 90ies. The time when House music rose everywhere and mainly in Belgium. It's hard to choose one specific song but this is the one I used a hell of a lot as a DJ on many parties 2 Unlimited - Jump for Joy And last but not least Greenday - Basket Case I don't want to know how many times I drunkenly shouted/sung/garbled the lyrics to this one on a party Ah the memories :D So what are the songs of your youth? (if you are already old enough to think back to it that is :( )

New single from Rise Against's new album 'End Game.' Sounds great. http://kroq.radio.com/2011/01/17/world-pre...thcoming-album/ If this single is anything to judge by, it sounds like it's going to sound like Sufferer and the Witness and Appeal to Reason combined; which sounds like a great thing.

Usually i'm no fan of country music or the typical American sound. I for example can't stand Bruce Springsteen, but there are of course exceptions. Like this one Although I guess that the Americans here won't call that a real American sound it is for an European like me So when I saw they were passing through my favourite concert hall here in Belgium in september I immediately bought tickets. Hope it will be a good show, but with those 2 I don't really doubt it.

Got my tickets for the new Grinderman tour concert in Belgium. Yeehaa For those of you who don't know Grinderman, first of all shame on you! It's Nick Cave's dirty side project together with the core of The Bad Seeds. Grinderman is everything he can't make or do with his normal band. A hundred times more dirty and unpolished. Both text and sound wise. And seeing what things he already made with his normal band that is saying something They released one album so far in 2007 and it's absolutely great. Pure dirty hard blues! Do watch this little clip from their "single", doubt they ever released it as one but it's as close as it gets to a single (language warning!) And since the concert is in the AB, a concert hall with only place for 2000 people it's sure as hell going to be great. And it can't possibly suck harder than the Eric Clapton / Steve Winwood concert last Sunday. Not even Celine Dion can be as bad as that....

Yeehaaa Iggy & The Stooges just were announced to be playing on Rock Zottegem this year :o Guess it will be friday: rock zottegem, saturday: cactus festival again. wheee made my day :) :o

Made a small list of songs you all should hear but most likely never heard before The Twilight Singers with Mark Lanegan - Live with me (Massive Attack cover) Mother Superior ft Daniel Lanois - Let it go 65daysofstatic - Drove Through Ghosts Crash Test Dummies - Afternoons and Coffeespoons (note the guy constantly switching in between 3 harmonicas) Patti Smith - Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones cover which puts the original to shame) Arno - Les yeux de ma mère also I made a third category now called music because well at least 1/3 of my blog posts are about music :)
