Hey guys, so skill guides aren't my strong point but we should get this EOC stuff done. This is a very rough guide and will need lots of help and additions will be made by me and hopefully you too over the course of this guide's progress. Attack Written by: TakerMayFire (Twist of Fate) Original guide by: Skandal Special thanks to: Sobend, Hunter, Wartoc1 Attack is an important aspect of combat, as it determines how accurate your hits will be on your opponents. As your Attack level increases, you'll be able to wield stronger weapons. Table of Contents Attack types Attack classes Weapons Temporary bonuses Attack type Melee attack types involves slash, crush, and stab. Each weapon has one style of attack, a different strength, and each monster or other player has a weakness to them. For example, instead of selecting your attack style for each weapon, an abyssal whip is exclusively a slash weapon and you can choose what skill to gain experience in if you click on the combat interface (the two crossed swords to the top left of your inventory). When you use a certain weapon, you'll be able to choose where you gain experience when you cause damage to an enemy through the combat menu. You will always earn experience in Constitution. You can earn experience in attack, defense, or strength depending on what you select from the menu. Selecting "Attack, strength, and defense" will reward you shared experience in those three skills. You will also notice the Auto Retaliate button. Auto Retaliate basically tells your character what to do when you are attacked by another force. If you have this option on, then your character will instantly start fighting back. If this option is off, then your character will stand and do nothing, until you right click on the force and select the option to "Attack". Attack classes If you select the helmet icon (in the above picture), you'll see the equipment you are wearing. At the bottom of the body menu, you should find a button labeled "Show Equipment Stats". Clicking that button will pop up a box showing what you're wearing, an enlarged picture of yourself, and your stats. For now, we'll only discuss the Attack Bonuses, but you'll also see a number of other bonuses as well as stats for offhand weapons and armor. Damage decides how high damage per hit is. The base damage is the bonus in the selected attack type skill. Accuracy shows the frequency of your damage. You also have a chance of making critical hits which is shown as a percentage. The type shows the weapon's attack type. Speed displays the rate of attack. The speeds are either average, fast, or fastest. Here are the different types of attacks as well as strengths and weaknesses. Stab - a penetrating attack, common with Daggers. Effective against chainmail. Slash - a very common "swiping" attack. Effective against light armor like robes or Dragonhide. Crush - a common attack with Maces, Hammers and Mauls. It's very effective against heavy armor like platemail. Magic - often negated by armor and weapons, but can be increased with staffs. Allows you to hit harder with Magic. Ranged - Often negated by full helmets and armor. It allows you to hit harder with ranged equipment. Strength - This effects how hard you hit. Better metals will give higher strength bonuses. Weapons Stab Weapons Training Short Sword In Lumbridge, you'll come across an Attack Tutor, who will give you a free Training Short Sword. This item (like all other Training items) can't be dropped or traded to other players. Types: Training Advantage: Speed Attack Styles: Stab (Accurate) Lunge (Aggressive) Slash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Styles: Stab Daggers The dagger is the most basic weapon in the game and is pretty fast. Its speed will give you an advantage over low Defence monsters and players. It is one handed. Types: Daggers come in all metal. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: Speed and the ability to be poisoned. Attack Styles: Stab (Accurate) Lunge (Aggressive) Slash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Stab Short Swords The short sword is a fast weapon mainly used for stabbing. They deal a little more damage than daggers, but they're not quite as good as a Long Sword. Best to stick with Long Swords if you can afford them. 1 Handed. Types: Short swords come in all metals except for dragon. (Bronze-Rune) Advantage: Speed Attack Styles: Stab (Accurate) Lunge (Aggressive) Slash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Long Swords Long swords are another popular weapon in the game. They too have a good compromise between speed and strength. A weapon popular with members the long sword is usually the choice of weapon to go in the wilderness while in a Members world. It is one handed. Types: Long Swords come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: Moderate speed & Moderate strength. Attack Styles: Chop (Accurate) Slash (Aggressive) Lunge (Controlled) Block (Defensive) Hatchets Hatchets are fast but weak, as they are made for Woodcutting. They have lower bonuses than regular items or the sort. 1 Handed. Types: Hatchets come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: High Speed, Cuts wood Attack Styles: Chop (Accurate) Hack (Aggressive) Smash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Chop Spears Spears are rarely used in the game. The spear is both slow and weak but has all styles of attack. It is members only and is 2 handed, except for the Bone Spear. They are the only weapon classes that can be poisoned with Karambwan Poison (KP). Types: Spears come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: All attack styles. Attack Styles: Lunge (Controlled) Swipe (Controlled) Pound (Controlled) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Lunge Slash Weapons 2-Handed Swords Questionably the most powerful weapon in RuneScape, but not the most widely used. Due to their size, you must hold a 2 Handed sword with, yes, both hands, so you cannot use a shield. Despite this, the 2 Handed sword was considered by most to be the "Best" weapon in RuneScape Classic, due to its general power. This changed when the newer RuneScape was launched, and the speed of the 2 handed sword became a problem. Always a good weapon to use when showing off your Maximum Hit, but now rather neglected otherwise. Also, when a 2-Handed Sword is equipped and the character is wearing a cape, the bottom of the cape moves back and forth. Types: 2 handed swords come in all metals, from Bronze to Dragon. Advantage: Very high damage. Attack Styles: Chop (Accurate) Slash (Aggressive) Smash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Any, against platemail. Scimitars The scimitar is a weapon most used throughout the F2P worlds. A good compromise between speed and strength the scimitar proves to be a very popular weapon with most players. This weapon will give you an advantage over low Defence monsters and players. It is one handed. Types: Scimitars come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: Fast speed & Moderate strength. Attack Styles: Chop (Accurate) Slash (Aggressive) Lunge (Controlled) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Slash Halberds Slow but strong, the halberd is one of the more popular weapons. Despite it being slow many players use it as it has a great advantage of being able to attack two square distances away and even over some obstacles. They are Members-Only, hard to obtain and 2 Handed. Types: Halberds come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: High damage, Attack from 2 Squares Attack Styles: Jab (Controlled) Swipe (Aggressive) Fend (Defensive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Swipe Claws Claws are nearly the same as daggers, and they are just as fast as them. They cannot be poisoned. They are 2 Handed and Members only. You must complete theDeath Plateau Quest to make them. Types: Claws come in all metals, from Bronze to Dragon. Advantage: Speed Attack Styles: Chop (Accurate) Slash (Aggressive) Lunge (Controlled) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Slash Abyssal Whip The Abyssal Whip is most probably the best weapon in the game. The abyssal whip is both fast and strong. It is a one handed weapon and is the weapon of choice for all those who can afford it. It can be obtained by slaying Abyssal Demons. It requires 70 attack to wield and is called a whip for short. Advantage: Deals high damage and fast. Attack Styles: Flick (Accurate) Lash (Controlled) Deflect (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Slash The only real disadvantage of the Abyssal Whip is the fact that you can't train Strength with it, unless you use the "Controlled" style which also trains your other combat stats. Crush Weapons Pickaxes Pickaxes are very weak and are not considered good weapon, as they are slow and cumbersome... they are 1 handed. They're general purpose is Mining, not combat Types: Pickaxes come in all metals, except black and dragon. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: Mining, Smashing Attack Attack Styles: Spike (Accurate) Impale (Aggressive) Smash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Impale Or Smash Maces The mace is a crushing weapon used mainly by monks or prayer beasts due to its slight prayer bonus. Rarely used because of it's low max hit, which makes them relatively cheap. This weapon is good against platemail. It is one handed. Types: Maces come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: Slight prayer bonus & good against platemail. Attack Styles: Pound (Accurate) Pummel (Aggressive) Spike (Controlled) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Spike Battle Axes Battle axes are slow but strong. They are used commonly in the game and acts as way of dealing high damage without compromising your Defence by removing your shield. They are good against high and low Defence monsters and players because of its attack styles. 1 Handed. Types: Battle axes come in all metals. (Bronze-Dragon) Advantage: High damage without compromising Defence Attack Styles: Chop (Accurate) Hack (Aggressive) Smash (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Smash on platemail, Hack on robes and dragon hide. Warhammers These bulky weapons are newer to the runescape world. They boast a very high strength, but have quite a slow attack speed. Some think their power overcomes this disadvantage. 1 Handed. Types: Warhammers come in all metal except for dragon. (Bronze-Rune) Advantage: Very high damage. Attack Styles: Pound (Accurate) Pummel (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Any, against platemail. Blackjacks & Clubs Clubs have strong smashing bonus (Bone Clubs), Blackjacks can stun. They are one handed. Bone Clubs can be found in Lost Tribe Mines, and blackjacks in The Feud Quest. Types: Bone Club/Oak & Willow Blackjacks Advantage: Stun (Blackjacks) Attack Styles: Pound (Accurate) Pummel (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Pound Granite Maul The granite maul deals more damage than a whip but is much slower and is two-handed. It can be obtained by slaying Nechryaels and Gargoyles. Advantage: Deals high damage. Attack Styles: Pound (Accurate) Pummel (Aggressive) Block (Defensive) Recommended Attack Style: Crush Other Staves Not very fast, and not really made for melee combat, these provide users additional magical focusing for attacking. You can set attacking spells to autocast, and some allow you to use some spells that you cannot use without the appropriate staff. More about staffs can be found in the Magic Guide. Types: Plain, All elementals, Battlestaffs, Mystical Staffs, God Staffs, Slayer Staff Advantage: Autocasting Spells, Elemental staffs stops you from wasting runes of a kind. Attack Styles: Bash(Accurate) Pound (Aggressive) Focus - Block (Defensive) Attack With - (Choose Spell) Recommended Attack Style: Attack With Spell Also, the best style while casting an offensive spell and at the same time carry a staff with you is to choose focus-block, as it gives exp to Defence as well. So in whole, you will receive Magic, Constitution and Defence experience. Barrows Weapons See: Barrows Guide There are several different kinds of Barrows weapons that belong to the brothers. They are actually part of the separate sets that give extra bonuses. Types: Torag's Hammers, Verac's Flail, Guthan's Warspear, Dharock's Greataxe, Kharil's Crossbow, Ahrim's Staff, Akrisae's War Mace. Advantage: very powerful; each set has specific bonuses. Attack Styles: Torag's Hammers Crush Controlled Verac's Flail Stab Crush Controlled Guthan's Warspear Stab Slash Crush Controlled Dharok's Greataxe Slash Crush Controlled Karil's Crossbow Accurate Rapid Longrange Staff Slash Crush Stab Recommended Attack Style: Unknown Akrisae's War Mace Recommended style: Crush Mjolnirs You can get these from completing the Enchanted Key Mini-Quest, and they are also known as God Spears. Types: Saradomin, Zamorak and Guthix. Do you want experience, or money? If experience is what you're after, many players choose to cut lower level logs such as willows and just drop them after getting a full inventory. This is known as "Power cutting". If you are close to a general store, you may also want to sell your logs to make some money. Levels 1-15: Regular Trees When you start out, you will only be able to chop regular logs until level 15. Regular trees only give one log per spawn and most of Runescape is covered with them. Each log gives 25 experience. Don't worry, it goes faster than you think. You will need to cut 97 regular trees until level 15. Levels 15-35: Oak Trees Like regular trees, Oak trees are also very common in both free player and members areas. A popular place to cut oaks for members is outside of Seer's Village bank. Another popular place for members is outside of Castle Wars. There is a bank chest inside the castle. There are only two spawns, but they respawn quickly and there is a bank nearby. If you are a free player, Lumbridge or Draynor Village will be no problem. Between these levels, you will be able to move up to using a Mithril Hatchet. You will need to cut 534 Oak logs until level 35. Level 35+: Willow Trees Willow trees are found near water. They provide fast experience and a decent sum of money in large amounts. A popular place for both free players and members to cut Willows is Draynor. Members may prefer cutting willows at the Barbarian Outpost or Seer's Village. Barbarian Outpost has eight Willow trees with a bank deposit box inside of the Barbarian Assault building. If you prefer power cutting, you may want to cut Willows north west or south of Rimmington. Level 54+: Arctic Pines (Members) After completing The Fremennik Isles quest, you will have access to an island called Neitiznot. There you will find Arctic Pine Trees. They can be cut at a decent rate with decent experience from level 54 until 99. After level 90 you are able to gain 90,000 to 100,000 experience per hour. These are not usually power cut or banked. Instead, players split the log by clicking on the stump to gain 43.2 extra experience per log. After making an entire inventory of split logs, you can deposit all of them in one click onto the pile. Level 55+: Maple Trees Maple Trees are accessible to Free Players and Members. They are not recommended for money or fast experience but are helpful if you want to gather the resources yourself to train Firemaking. The only Free Player location is a resource dungeon on the Daemonheim Peninsula. For Members, Seer's Village is the most popular place as it is right near a bank. Level 60+: Hardwood Trees (Teak and Mahogany) Teak and Mahogany trees are power cut for the most part. They are not commonly used for profit and Jagex placed them in areas away from banks. There is one Teak tree spawn southwest of Castle Wars with a bank chest in the castle and if you choose to keep them it is recommended to use a Ring of Duelling for fast banking at Castle Wars. Ape Atoll is a popular place to cut both Teak and Mahogany trees. You will need to have completed the Monkey Madness quest or at least get up to the part where you can use a Monkey Greegree. A Greegree is necessary due to the fact that everything in the jungle is poisonous and hostile toward you regardless of your combat level. The Greegree must be equipped and the hatchet you use must be kept in your inventory. After The Deadliest Catch quest, you will have access to a bank deposit box in the jungle which is useful if you plan on keeping the logs. In Tai Bwo Wannai, you can gain access to the Hardwood Grove which is full of Teak and Mahogany trees. You must have helped with the Tai Bwo Wanni cleanup and you will need to pay 100 trading sticks before each entrance. Level 68: Ivy Cutting ivy is a fast way to gain experience, but does not provide any money. Ivy is located on the north and east sides of Varrock Castle, on the north wall in Yanille, outside the south wall at Castle Wars, South east in Taverly, on the east side of the church wall in Ardougne, and outside the north and south walls in Falador. Each chopped vine gives 332.5 experience. Wearing a clan ring with lumberjack gear can push it up to 843 experience per chop. The only money that can be made from chopping Ivy is from bird's nests. At level 68, it is possible to gain 45,000 to 55,000 experience per hour and around 65,000 experience per hour at level 80. At level 95, you may find yourself getting 75,000 to 80,000 experience per hour. High Level Trees The next two methods should be used for money only and are not recommended for gaining fast experience. Level 80-99: Yew Trees A lot of money can be made by getting 99 woodcutting using Yews. The problem is that it isn't exactly fast, but it's your own decision. If you are a free player, Yew spawns are located south of Falador, Edgeville, or north of Varrock Castle. The problem is that most of those locations are full of bots, and the location south of Falador does not have a bank close by. It is not recommended to power cut yew trees. For members, Yews can be found in Seer's Village in the Cemetery, south of the beehives between Catherby and Seer's Village, or if you'd like a more quiet place, Near the southeast gate in the Gnome Stronghold. If botters ever become an issue to you as a free player, try hopping to a foreign language world. Members will find that The Gnome Stronghold Yews are not botted. Level 95-99: Magic Trees Magic Trees are the most rare and the hardest to chop. They are not cut at a fast rate no matter what level you are, but if you're looking for money they may be worth it. They are located south of Sorcerer's Tower, south central in The Gnome Stronghold, south of Lletya, The Mage Training Arena, and the resource dungeon in Varrock Sewers. Sawmill Training Whenever you grow tired of the traditional method of cutting trees for hours, you may want to try something different. Head over to the Sawmill to be assigned a plank making job and gain experience! The full Sawmill Training guide can be found here. Helpful Items In addition to your hatchet, there are quite a few items that may aid your training. Beaver Pouch- Cuts up to 3 logs from nearby trees. (33 Summoning required) Giant Ent Pouch- Gathers Oak logs. (78 Summoning required) Hydra Pouch- Use a Regrowth Scroll on a farming tree stump to instantly regrow it. Inferno Adze- Burns around 20% of the logs you cut and gives Firemaking experience. Lumberjack Clothing- Provide increased Woodcutting experience when worn. Seer's Headbands- Give extra logs and experience depending on the type. Strung Rabbit Foot- Increases the chance of getting a bird's nest while training. Woodcutting Urns- Collect wood chips and are made using the crafting skill. Once they are full, they may be teleported away for Woodcutting experience.
