the answer would be 10...(you can re-arrange the problem in any way you want so -5+15 is the same as 15-5 just written differently)

To figure it out:

 

-5 and 15 are on different sides of the number line. So, you subtract 15 from 5 to get 10. 15's absolute value is higher so 10 stays positive.

If you're having trouble with stuff like that, you can try and relate it to something. For me, when I learned it, we were told to think of it as in a bank. That's saying you're in debt by 5 dollars, and you put in 15 dollars. 10 dollars.

it took 15 numbers from "-5" to "10" to move across to the "10" place.

The answer then is "10" -.-

 

And if you ever come across a similar subtraction problem such as: -5 -15 It is the same as -5 +-15 Which is of course -20.

^Not needed? Last I checked this was a 6th grade problem I think (Or 7th) Maybe hes just confused, not stupid :(
