Salmoneus Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 In case you haven't noticed, please read the announcement I posted on the MS Security Bulletin that was released last week. This thread is for discussing that announcement. :)
Guest Zombie Kid90 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Sal, where all the computer hijacked or something? PS- Did you get my PM about a avatar I drew? :)
Ouranos Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Teh Patchsoft strikes again....gawd, it's not even funny anymore how many holes there are in their OS.
Salmoneus Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Yes, and it's somewhat scary that this Os is installed on the vast majority of systems out there... if it wasn't for the lack of software and such for Mac and Linux, I'd switch in an instant. :) EDIT: I think that there's a patch that has just been released for this issue. :)
Panda200x Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 i've got it now.... and i suggest using https://www.microsoft.com, i've noticed I've never heard something about the Mac like malware extreeme threats
Guest Zombie Kid90 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Teh Patchsoft strikes again....gawd, it's not even funny anymore how many holes there are in their OS. Question.. Why have they been doing this? and for how long?
Bubbles Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 In English please? :) I have no idea what you guys are talking about, from what i hear, there is a virus or bug that i need to download a patch to my system to keep my system safe from threats. Explain please? :)
man Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 In English please? :) I have no idea what you guys are talking about, from what i hear, there is a virus or bug that i need to download a patch to my system to keep my system safe from threats. Explain please? :) Basically there was a flaw in Windows that allowed people to take control of your computer if you visited their websites/opened emails. Just download the patch from Microsoft.com and you should be safe. Or you could wait until the auto update thing downloads it for you.
Steve Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 (edited) i've got it now....and i suggest using https://www.microsoft.com, i've noticed I've never heard something about the Mac like malware extreeme threats Because few people use it so it wont be as much of an annoyance Btw happy bday Flum :) Edited January 5, 2006 by Steve
Guest Samster Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 (edited) It's so funny, because they've known this was going to happen with XP since they released it. Even before... idiots. http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/...n&&thankspage=5 You have to open it in MS IE. Edited January 5, 2006 by Samster
Headshot212 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 How would we know if we are infected? I have McAfee, and it's always downloading some updates, so I should be safe correct? Thanks for the heads up though sal.
Steve Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I think I got a virus from this thingy.. Will the update delete the virus? Norton cant
Guardian CRD Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 (edited) Good, you informed them. Anyways, THE PATCH TO FIX THIS IS OUT! PLEASE UPDATE YOUR WINDOWS ASAP TO FIX THIS! Anyways, you know, people only say Windows sucks because of this. But if all users used lets say Mac OSX, then it would have its loophole too, and people would be like OMG MAC SUX0R LINUX AND WINDOWS IS TEH ROXZ0R Edited January 6, 2006 by Guardian CRD
Steve Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Grr stupid computer got the damn infection :) Now I gotta remove it :)
Salmoneus Posted January 6, 2006 Author Posted January 6, 2006 Grr stupid computer got the damn infection :) I think there's a Microsoft program that *may* be able to help, it's the "Malicious Software Removal Tool" which you should be able to download from the M$ site. I'm surprised that they don't have any removal instructions for it though. :s Anyways, you know, people only say Windows sucks because of this. But if all users used lets say Mac OSX, then it would have its loophole too, and people would be like OMG MAC SUX0R LINUX AND WINDOWS IS TEH ROXZ0R Well it's not that Windows isn't good (because it is!), it just isn't very secure because of the ways the filesystem is handled. The Windows Registry itself is a disaster waiting to happen, and the way that windows XP handles new accounts (either an Admin with FULL rights, or a limited user with practically NO rights... :s ) makes it so hard for non computer savvy people to secure their computer. Designing Windows to fix these design problems for one would make it MUCH more secure. Millions of people use Linux and Mac by the way, Windows is just an easier target. :)
Guest Christina Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Cool!! I keep getting no response from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. Yes, I'm using IE.
Samurai5911 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 The biggest setback of windows is that it is not open source. The other OS are all majorly open source OS's and so millions of people work on it. If 1 million people work to improve something and 1 person tries to spoil it, then it really is no big issue lol and that's what microsoft needs to understand. how to sell Windows for free lol.
Guest Samster Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 If 1 million people work to improve something and 1 person tries to spoil it, then it really is no big issue lol and that's what microsoft needs to understand. how to sell Windows for free lol. If somebody works on an Open Source project, and then uploads it to the server, it doesn't automatically get included in the next project. People actually check this stuff to see if it works. Everyone run this program: http://kyeu.info/ilfak/wmf_checker_hexblog.exe No it's not a virus, although if you don't run it, you may have said virus. If that checker says you have a virus, then download this: http://kyeu.info/ilfak/wmffix_hexblog14.exe After running that, you should be safe. At least until Microsoft releases the official patch on the 10th. But by then it could be too late.
Panda200x Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 (edited) hackers are always finding a way nowadays look at the Sony disc incident Good thing Sal posted this. Cheers Sal have one on me! :) lol a little vid about Apple's Mac Edited January 6, 2006 by Panda200x
Dbdom Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Great, so glad I found out about this, microsoft have an updated security thing you can get from WindowsUpdate, but Ill be glad by the 10th when the patch comes out, how do you know if you have the problem
hypercat Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 R u definately gonna get it without patch? or is it unlucky 2 get it? can sum1 give me the statistics?
Salmoneus Posted January 11, 2006 Author Posted January 11, 2006 R u definately gonna get it without patch? or is it unlucky 2 get it? can sum1 give me the statistics? It's difficult to say, but I'd suggest getting the patch as soon as you can. If you run into any infected sites, you'll get infected because your system is vulnerable without the patch.
Steve Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 I got mine from some ads at my clan's website, someone else I know said he got it from another site (I got it a day or two after my clan ended, there was some flaming and stuff going on so I wasnt sure..). It was ads on an InvisionFree board. So I DEFINITLY suggest getting it, because the virus was in the ad (Sal you should probably add this on the first post since lots of people use invisionfree forums, Im 100% sure it was from there because it was the only window of any sort I had open at the time) Im pretty sure Norton deleted it, even though it said it couldnt. I havnt noticed any problems recently.
