kalipop Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 (edited) I am constantly updating the support list when I can, and adding any improvements/suggestions below the original suggestion I posted. For those who have written in so far, thank you for all the support and suggestions you have made. It feels like much more of a forum thing than when I first proposed this little idea. Update (10/24/08): I just looked to bump the suggestion on RSOF, and it has gone to page 51. For all the support it seemed to get on here, not enough people from here, or anywhere, went on to official forums to add their voice to it. If I see people supporting here, I'll keep adding on the support list in the meantime, but I don't know how much difference it will make at the moment, until we get a lot more people supporting it not just here, but for next time it gets posted on official forums. Update: (9/15/08): Mano has posted the suggestion to the official forums, so if you support, are p2p, and haven't posted here yet, you can also post there to support. For your name to appear on official forums, you MUST post in the official thread, otherwise Mano can not put your name on the support list, according to RSOF rules. For those that are f2p, and support, you can still post here, but we wll not be able to add your name to the official post unfortunately The thread on official forums Quick find code: 83-84-51-57647188 I brought this suggestion up briefly in a thread about what constitutes a high level. Since I think cb level is somewhat overrated, I think this would be a cool way to show others how your total level compares to theirs. Since Jagex tends to promote and reward players with well-rounded accounts, as is evidenced from the quest cape and achievement diary requirements, I think it would only make sense to somehow display total level, as well as combat level. It could be displayed by changing the shade of the player\'s name, or just putting a tiny box or circle with an appropriate color next to their name. It could be done one of a few ways that I can see: 1. Having color codes for set intervals of total levels. If you did it for every 100 levels, it would be a lot of colors to try and remember, but they could keep it roughly along the same lines as the cb level colors, but with more shades to accentuate the differences. Since you start with 33 levels (It's been a long time since I started playing so I forget, so thank you To Dei Wei for the info), you could make the first 200 levels the same color, and continue on from there up to White/silver for the last 76 levels (until they release a new skill, which would change it up a little) Total Levels/Color 0-200 - Violet 201-350 - Light Violet 351-500 - Dark Blue 500-650 - Blue 651-800 - Light Blue 801-950 - Dark Green 951-1100 - Green 1101-1250 - Light green 1251-1400 - Yellow 1401-1550 - Light Orange 1551-1700 - Orange 1701-1850 - Dark Orange 1851-2000 - Light Red 2001-2150 - Red 2151-2300 - Dark Red 2301-2376 - White/Silver 2. You could just color the actual screen name with the color scheme above. Ex: kalipop - (level 121) 3. The other option, which is somewhat different, is to do color coding again, but in degrees of separation from the actual user. Accounts within 10 total levels of each other would be yellow to start, and the colors would change as the degree becomes greater, going towards the opposite ends of the spectrum. So something like this: This is how it would look to you: 151+ levels less than you - Blue 101-150 levels less than you - Light Blue 51-100 levels less than you - Green 11-50 levels less than you - Light green 0-10 levels more or less - Yellow 11-50 levels more than you - Orange 51-100 levels more than you - Dark Orange 100-150 levels more than you - Red 151+ levels more than you - Dark Red Again, you can either shade the names, or put a little icon next to them to denote the difference. Thoughts or comments would be appreciated. If you don't support please give a good reason why. ________________________________________________________________________________ ALL of the suggestions/revisions that have been posted, which are really good: 1. Mano was kind enough to make a fake to demonstrate, since I have no skills in that area at all: Also, Desireful made a suggestion for the total level to show up when you hover over the colored circle, which I thought was nifty. 2. Mano suggested the following, which is a good option too, I'm just too lazy to change the stuff up top, so I'm just taking it from his post: =p I think that the best way to do it would be to have it by how many levels apart, and use the same colours that are there for Combat. Like this: (Credits to GFK) 101+ levels less than you - Green 31-100 levels less than you - Light Green 1 - 30 levels less than you - Lightest Green. The same level as you - Yellow. 1 - 30 levels more than you - Orange 31-100 levels more than you - Dark Orange 101+ levels more than you - Dark Red 3. Pheoniixx redid one of the fakes so people can see what it would look like to have colors in the name: 4. 4kin0s 2 and Zomg noob both suggested a toggle option, so you could turn off the skill levels on and off, which is not a bad idea/addition either. 5. Phoeniixx was kind enough to make another fake to show the toggle option in the menu 6. Razorlike suggested a different scale for the changes in color for the skill levels. This can be found in post #37. 7. Honterus suggested having a function button slaved to the ability, whcih would make it easier to toggle it on/off. 8. Mr. Blaster brought up a good point that this would impact on color blind people somewhat. Since typically 5% of the population is color-blind, it would impact a small number of players. However, he did not propose a solution to that, so I would suggest that Jagex would be aware of this before trying to implement it, since they have adapted certain parts of gameplay for color-blind people. I would think, then for colors that could be confused for color-blind people, they could have alternate colors for those colors, or they could just simply use the suggestion of being able to hover over someone and see their total level in terms of numbers, instead of differentiating using colors. However, I would point out that green and red are 2 of the most confused colors, and those colors are used extensively in game at the moment (red for high combat lvls, green for decently lower than you, if you weren't sure ), so I don't think it would stop them from implementing it if they really thought it was a good idea. I'll start working on the support list below. If I put your name on it by accident, please let me know, since not all of the posts had firm yes or no for support, so I used the tenor of your posts to decide if you were supportive of the suggestion. EDIT: I have added people RS names next to their forum names if they aren't the same as of 8/31/08. Some of you guys have changed forum names since though, so I can't put a name to all, so if you want your updated name on the list, please pm me so I can adjust it, thanks =) Support List (Updated as of 10/24/08): 1. Razorlike Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 (edited) I find color coded combat alot more useful. If you implement color coding total levels, it would either: [*]Cancel the combat out. [*]Look like you just had a bad trip. ~Razorlike Edited July 23, 2008 by Razorlike

[*]Look like you just had a bad trip. ~Razorlike That's why I gave an option of just making a little icon next to the name to denote it, something as simple as a circle would work. So the names would remain white, but just have a colored thing right next to it. I thought the names might be a little much, which is why the alternative was offered as well. But I tried to pick colors that wouldn't kill your eyes either.
Jethraw Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I support. I suppose you can tell a person's combat level by hovering over them, and you don't need a colour code to know they are 'x' combats higher than you. This idea would let you see how they are as a skiller without the bother of hiscores etc.
Kovu Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I do support but maybe they could just keep the colour coding in the same way they do for the combat levels. i.e green is lower than you, lighter green is if they're a close total level to you and red for if they're higher than you. I suggest this because I don't think it's important to know EXACTLY what total level someone is.
storm2007 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 (edited) so for example, it would be like this? bundet111 have 990 total level and kalipop's username would look like this: (btw what is ur combat lvl lol?, i will make it lvl 100 just for now...) kalipop - (level 100) <---i forgot how its formated but this is very close and this is your idea right?? kalipop Posted July 23, 2008 Author Posted July 23, 2008 so for example, it would be like this? bundet111 have 990 total level and kalipop's username would look like this: (btw what is ur combat lvl lol?, i will make it lvl 100 just for now...) kalipop - (level 100) <---i forgot how its formated but this is very close and this is your idea right?? I'm level 121 atm, and 1980 total, so I guess something like this: kalipop - (level 121) I'd actually prefer A little thing, just like a circle, but I'm terrible and figuring out this message board stuff. It was a minor miracle that I did all the colors. like kalipop - (level 121) but no smiley face, just a circle, square, or something like that. There's no wingdings available as a font, otherwise I'd use the L in wingdings, which is a circle and colored it.
Fatalysm Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 It isn't a bad suggestion, however it is alot to take in and does somewhat confuse me. There isn't really a problem with the current system and if you really wanted to see a total level, the hiscores are easily accesible.
Dei Wei Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 it's a great idea because i normaly like to judge people by there total levels reather than there combat levels i support
Razorlike Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Reading suggestions at 00:21 wasn't a good idea xD. I think the colors would make it too colorful (especially in places like the GE). It's a matter of taste and opinion, I don't like it, but it could be that others do. ~Razorlike
Ak-47 Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 I support, it would be like me seeing a lvl 100 with 790 total, so like this...?: I would walk across a lvl 100 whos calling me a noob, I will hover my mouse over him: Imnotanoob-Level 100 That would indicate me being a higher level, so he would run away....But... He would also think hes higher total than me because it's 11-50 More or less. But that doesn't matter, it's called highscores, right? -----I support------
kalipop Posted July 24, 2008 Author Posted July 24, 2008 I like it. I support, and I'll make you a fake later. Thanks Mano, a fake would be great. Except for Razorlike, who is more of an abstain vote, and Storm who didn't voice an opinion, it's been all supports so far. Unknown, in response to your thought about hiscores being easily accessible, that's what I usually do myself. Only 2 issues with that are: 1. I know some ppl who play who have to log out just to read Sal's so hiscores would be the same issue. 2. You can't access it when playing full screen. With reno's post, I agree that the color scheme should be kept something like the combat colors. I jsut happened to add a few more shades towards the opposite ends of the spectrum to show those really extreme differences. And Ming Der, thank you for the support. Your reason for supporting is the the same philosophy that I share, which was why I was thinking of this in the first place. And thanks also to potato-cheezerox3 and magedyew for the votes. 6 supports is a little too soon for a support list I think :) We'll see how it goes for the next couple of days. Thanks again for taking the time to read and comment on it.
fattyman999 Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 I think this is a good idea, as long as there are not too many colours to remember. I find it interesting to know other peoples total lvl.
Mano Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 This fake incorporates the circle idea. I could make other ones if you need. [IMG=http://i38.tinypic.com/11vglye.png]
kalipop Posted July 24, 2008 Author Posted July 24, 2008 This fake incorporates the circle idea. I could make other ones if you need. [IMG=http://i38.tinypic.com/11vglye.png] I think that's great, if you don't mind I'll throw the image on the first post, so people can see it without having to scroll all the way down. Thank you again Mano. If I could, I'd buy you a cold one
Mano Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Your welcome. If I could, I'd buy you a cold one I'll give you my address, if you cover P & P.
oldage Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Implenting this idea would make a "paint-book" of runescape In my opinion. So i disagree. and i follow Razorlike in his comment (GE etc..)
Mano Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Implenting this idea would make a "paint-book" of runescape In my opinion. So i disagree. and i follow Razorlike in his comment (GE etc..) We already have the combat level colour-coded, in 14(I think) different colours.
Dei Wei Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 (edited) the fake looks good and you have spelt dark wrong in dark red you have spelt it datk and you start off with a total level of 33 Edited July 25, 2008 by dei wei
ultimatearco Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 (edited) Thats actually a good idea! You have my full support And its a nice fake But, does this also appears in the skilling interface? ~Ulti ~Edit Second page Edited July 25, 2008 by ultimatearco
Angel Hayley Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 how about not color coding the circle, but color coding the entire name? like you know, Chngjonathan - (level 86) it might be clearer. rather than trying to stare at a little dot at a corner...
kalipop Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 the fake looks good and you have spelt dark wrong in dark red you have spelt it datk and you start off with a total level of 33 Both things are fixed thanks. Ulti, could you be more specific about how it would show in the skilling interface? I just thought about it when you hover over someone. If you could figure out a good way to incorporate it, I'll definitely add it into the original post. Kuraudo, I suggested that as an option in the first post. Maybe you just missed it? :) But you taking the time to post that option, I would guess you support? Mano, good point about how cb levels have lots of colors already. I already disregarded OldAge's objection anyway since he said "screw you" to me in another thread, making him to me irrelevant in this forum forever more.
Mano Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 (edited) I think Arco is trying to ask that if you decide to implement the colour coded per level, not per level apart, would it appear beside your total level. Too many colours. That seems to be the main negative comment. I think that the best way to do it would be to have it by how many levels apart, and use the same colours that are there for Combat. Like this: (Credits to GFK) 101+ levels less than you - Green 31-100 levels less than you - Light Green 1 - 30 levels less than you - Lightest Green. The same level as you - Yellow. 1 - 30 levels more than you - Orange 31-100 levels more than you - Dark Orange 101+ levels more than you - Dark Red Edited July 25, 2008 by Mano
MFI Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I made a fake: This would illustrate a person that's 151+ total levels lower than me. (I just used the old picture so you could demonstrate two ways it could possibly be displayed) I agree with you on this subject. It would make a great addition to RS.
