Ethan Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I was going to start a new character and I was wondering if it should be using magic ranged or melee. I would just like to hear the pros and cons of each. THis is what I know so far: Magic:most powerful but most costly...extra skills like teleporting Melee: most widely used...only need to buy weapon Ranged:Pretty exspensive, can do some huge damage I'd really appreciate if I heard everone's ideas! Thanks! >.< Quote

Ming Der Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Pros Magic- Overpowered in p2p, yes overpowered freezing, 30 damage. Melee- Way overpowered, one weapon lasts for like ever... Range- It's okay now good for comboing. Cons Magic- Costs a god amount to attack with, can't be used as a base attacker to ko someone normally, horrible in f2p, clothes provide very little defence to everything. Melee- ...Not really anything... Range- It's okay since Jagex imputted bolts and such, but it needs some things in f2p too, accumlators plox? A lot more points, but can't be bothered typing -Ming >.< Quote
Qilx Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 If you're going to have mage, have ranged as well (vice versa) since you won't gain combat levels. (Except for the extra hitpoints levels) Same goes for melee too. I heavily recommend mage since you can teleport with it, and magic levels also offer magic defence. Quote
Icy Defiance Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 If you're making a mage pure, make sure you have the skill to stay out of range of the other person, if they're melee, and don't even go against a ranger, unless you have a much higher mage level than their range level. If you can't do that cast, run, cast, run, technique, a mage pure isn't always that powerful. Bottom line, mage is only powerful from a distance, once a meleer gets close to you, he'll beat you easy. In Stealing Creation, the only place I really ancient people, I usually team with one or two meleers who will take the hits, and I'll use my ice burst to do most of the damage. And, melee does have one con, the inability to attack from a distance. If you're a meleer and you get maged, you'd better hope they don't run when you get unfrozen, or you lose. Other than that, use Ming Der's pros/cons. Quote
kico Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 k here are my ideas :D Range- great if u are a member, it can hit way high, and it trains well. The cost is high, but ull save in food as u can safe wen training. Melee- definitely cheapest, u will hit hi, and hav gud def from melee and range. Magic >.< - u will hit highest at low lvls, but it will cost alot, and u will need a ton of food. magic robes (other than splitbark) hav no range or melee defense. lol i hoped it helped (probably not) Kico Quote
Icy Defiance Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 magic robes (other than splitbark) hav no range or melee defense. Lunar robes and the other freminnik thing, skeletal, maybe? Anyway, they both have melee defense, but no magic robe has any good range defense, if any at all. Quote

matttdm28 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I suggest training melee as your main combat skill, and mage as your next for the teleports! >.< Matt Quote

Thanks! >.< if you're into pking...and f2p... magic is very effective at lvl 20 or below, after that you just get screwed over by range and melee, just avoid one itemers range is good ...anytime, you just need to be very skilled with it, meaning you need defense more than a melee person and rune 2h and arrows which can cost a bit of money especially when people runnnn melee is ultimately the best, and the cheapest, although if you carry in full rune all skulled you lose wayy more than range and magic, but then again you dont have to eat, and magic is just dead in f2p high levels. if you're just training and f2p do melee, get magic to at least 55 (high alch), range to at least...40 for green dhide just in case you need it, and melee train that all the way. Zachorayi Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 (edited) Mage/Melee hybrid is the way to go. People with hate you for owning so hard. I am a mage with a powerful melee secondary. Edited January 30, 2009 by Zachorayi Quote
Angel Hayley Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 melee if you want some power yet cheap way to bring a pure around. mage is more of accuracy, but the cost of training mage is the highest among the 3. range is cheap if you do it right. cheaper than mage, anyway. range is more of a mix between speed and power. for a normal acc i'll be a tribrid. for a pure i'll pick range lol. shaunshorty4 Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Range is great, its probably the cheapest not including the price of projectiles. I can hit 27 at my current level (75) without any boosts while at 80 str I can barely hit 23. Quote
Lordmax155 Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Use melee because it does not cost any (only weapons and armors) but if you can make money fast prefer mage but if you got only few money just prefer range Quote
kico Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Use melee because it does not cost any (only weapons and armors) but if you can make money fast prefer mage but if you got only few money just prefer range i wudnt use mage... its overpowered at low lvls yes, but it gets weaker and super expensive. So i wud get mage 2 25 but thats it. Kico Quote

Kico Mage is one of the most powerful combat methods at high levels because of the ancient spell book, nearly all the spells hit 20+ and ice/blood/smoke/shadow barrage make mage way overpowered with all its capabilities. Heck ice barrage can hit up to 30 and damage up to 9 players in a 3x3 grid and freeze them. Edited January 31, 2009 by shaunshorty4 Quote

Thanks! I'll redo this myself. Magic:Most powerful, ONLY when you are in the 20s, and expensive. Teleports are useful if you're too lazy to walk, like me. Melee:The most cheapest, and arguably the best. It will hit the best in Non members, and Members. However, you have to train 3 skills for something 2 if you're a pure, and that will increase combat. Not much of a deal for All-arounds. Ranged: Good to have with Melee, and will hit the most if you are looking for Non member 99 vs 99 against mage. Good fore pures, considering some Dragon Hide uses no defence, however it will give more then iron for pures. That's my review, hope I helped. :( Quote
