The Sal's Top 100 Movies List

So when I was reading Merch Gwyar's topic, it sparked some interest in me. The Sals community chose completely different books then what was suggested on the BBC Top 100 Books list. So I thought, why not see what the community comes up with for movies?

Because there are tons of movies that come out each year, I decided to split the list into two. I was going to do one Top 100 Movies list, but I decided to change it to Top 60 Modern Movies and Top 40 Classics. Everyone is allowed to nominate two movies for the first list and one movie for the second.

What is the difference between modern and classic? I say that anything after 1995 belongs in the "Modern" list, and anything before belongs in the "Classic" list. Fair enough?

There are some conditions for what movies you can nominate:

1. If the movies you're nominating are in a series, you can either nominate one movie in the series or the entire series. We can't have multiple movies from the same series as it'd be a waste of open slots.

2. The movie has to be at least an hour in length.

3. It has to have been shown in theatres or must be widely available on DVD/VHS.

4. If there are multiple creations/editions/versions of the movie you're talking about, please specify exactly which one you want to be added.

Even if we reach the cap of 60 for the first list or 40 in the second I will keep accepting submissions. After a certain period of time we will begin narrowing it down and we'll discuss which movies should be eliminated and which movies should stay.

tl;dr:

1. Two modern nominations one classic nomination.

2. Must have been shown in the movies or widely available on DVD/VHS.

3. Movies near 1995 cutoff can go into either list.

4. Clarify which movies you are nominating for modern and which you are nominating for classic. Makes it a little easier for me.

Classic

The Great Escape. One of my alltime favourite movies, I heart Steve McQueen

Modern

The Boy In Striped Pyjamas - the most moving film i've ever seen

The Hurt Locker - amazing war film.

All of the films I mentioned are to do with War

Modern:

Too many Nolans, Pulp Fiction is an obvious addition though, seriously.

Classic:

It's not too early to call the original Star Wars trilogy a classic. Predictable but brilliantly executed storytelling, I've rarely seen better, and I've seen more than a handful of films in my lifetime.

modern:

boondock saints 1, or the (to be) entire series, they aren't done yet though

and the green mile

Boondock Saints, love that movie, not convinced it's one of the best modern movies made. And the second was dreadful.

Modern:

Inception

We weren't all dazzled by Inception.

Okay, to everyone nominating, could you please separate or distinguish which ones you are nominating for modern and which ones you are nominating for classic? It'd just make life a bit easier for me, thanks. :) And please keep in mind that everyone only has 2 modern movie nominations and 1 classic movie nomination.

Everyone's nominations (that were in the constraints) were added. :/

The Life of Brian

The breakfast club

Anchorman

The Shawshank redemption

Oh too many..uuuhhhhh. I can't remove one..

Narrow it down so I know which ones to add!

modern:

Both fine choices. I don't remember much of Boondock Saints but I loved Green Mile.

Loved Pulp Fiction! Added it on.

Modern:

There Will Be Blood

Schindler's List (It's '93, I know )

Classic:

Psycho (original)

Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange

There Will Be Blood was amaaaaazzzziiiinnnggg. Also narrow down your classics to one

I'm not sure about your modern/classic distinction but anyway...

Modern; The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and The Big Lebowski.

Classic; Un Chien Andalou and Eraserhead.

I separated the moderns and classic by a time barrier because whether a movie is a classic or not is subjective. However it does take some time for a movie to become a "classic," and as an estimate I put 15 years. Of course, I am being flexible here, so movies that are right near that cutoff can go into either. Also, can you eliminate one of your nominations for classic?

benchwarmers.

Hot rod.

star wars series.

indiana jones series.

Avatar.

Narrow it down please.

By the way everyone, if I missed your additions please tell me!

It's turning into quite a nice list.

Everyone is allowed to nominate two movies for the first list and two movies for the second.

You wonder why everyone is getting it wrong?

Wow, total brainfart. I fixed it now, sorry guys.

Classic:

Flying High

Naked Gun

Halloween

Modern:

End of Evangelion

Oldboy

The Big Lebowski

One classic and two modern, please.

Forgot two perfect classics. Too bad I can't nominate them both, so I'll just have to nominate Jaws and hope someone nominates Ghostbusters. D:

Oh you sneaky little  added Jaws

Modern:

American History X

Fight Club

Added.

What is defined as a "modern" film? Like what time period are we talking about here.

Classic

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Not my favorite film but it's the least likely of my list of classic films to be nominated so I nominated it. Others that should be nominated but I can't because I can only choose one:

Lawrence of Arabia

Guns of Navarone

Bullit

Dirty Harry

and to throw in a real old movie

The Thin Man

I am considering post 1995 films to be modern, and anything before that time can be nominated as a classic.

Added your film.
