Sleepy Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Does anybody else see the folly in doing stories, interviews, and updates that center around people's opinions on a forum where the main thing is sharing people's opinions on things? Good luck anyways. Quote

Ambo100 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 How's the newspaper progressing? Which articles are done and have you sorted out the format you will present the newspaper as? Quote

I'm just saying that you aren't going to be offering anything that we can't find on the site already. There's a reason the old one died. But maybe I'm wrong and it'll be a huge success. Once again, good luck :D Quote

For bias, spelling, grammar, etc. @ Ambo So far, Choccy has written an article, I have done an interview with a respected member of the forum, I have written a RuneScape tip, and Justin has arranged an interview with a very famous YouTuber that I think everyone will enjoy. On top of all that, Gogl has a first draft done. For layout, I don't really know. I think I'll look over the old newspaper and see. But we're getting there. Quote

Old newspaper layout was kind of bland, I'd do something very simple that allows you to have a different structure each issue to accomodate for changing articles Quote
Yoyoma Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) I don't really know how to make it look like an actual newspaper. Any ideas anyone? Also... Read Me!!! If you have not turned in to me (by PM) an article or artwork or whatever you were assigned by February 7th, your work will not be included in the newspaper. I need to edit it. Thank you very much. Good luck. Edited January 23, 2011 by Yoyoma Quote
Ambo100 Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Worry more about the content. If you want you can set up a Wordpress blog and find a newspaper/magazine theme. There are loads of free themes to choose from and Wordpress is easy to use. Quote

Helm Lardar Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Like an actual newspaper? Well, here are some ideas: You'd need to format it using boxes, perhaps someone with a proper program like apple mac could do it? It doesn't need to look like a paper paper, but it can just look like a good news website. On the other hand, you could have the articles arranged in order of "importance" rather than the way shown in the picture. Then each one can link to an individual page. Don't forget the banner, heading, title, main and sub-article, and then a couple of pictures. IMHO, they really make a front page. Quote

Ambo100 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 You could do but you would lose all your formatting. Like this Like this Start simple, set out out like a guide or a skill log Quote

You edit out peoples work? :D That's what an editor traditionally does. If you write for a newspaper, you have to live with that. I don't know why the Wannabe Newspaper of Sals Realm would be any different. It was kind of spurr-of-the-moment, but if you could do a piece on the music of RuneScape - rewards, how may songs, if the music is any good, research the people who made it (can you do that?) - , that would be pretty cool IMHO. I don't really know. I think a piece on Jagex would also be pretty useful as I think a lot of the forum doesn't know a lot about the mods and who they are. I actually can't do this. Or rather, I can, but I'm not active enough to do a good job of it. I don't have members, and there isn't enough data on the people who made it for me to write the article, either... so I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm able to do a good job at this article if I attempt it. A RuneScape member should write it, if anyone does. Is there anything else you'd like me to do? I could write editorials or "opinion" pieces - I'm pretty good at staying impartial and looking at both sides of an issue lucidly. I know you don't want our newspaper to have much of a "slant," but the Tip.It Times, which seems to be the most successful running RuneScape publication by any fansite, has done a pretty good job of having a respectable turnout while keeping its views open and frank. I don't know why the Wannabe Newspaper of Sals Realm would be any different. The difference is that he is doing this for fun and a person in a newspaper does it for money. Same for everyone in the project, since they want their opinions to be out there surely him editing them out would make it less interesting. Since they have to rely on their own creativity/news or their own opinion, they don't have much choice. Updating a newspaper with news on their timescale is impossible, they have a certain degree of creativity but it's not enough by itself. Editing their opinions takes out part of that. Besides, it's supposed to be fun. Quote

That'd be great. I know a piece on the wildy is kind of unoriginal, but if you can't think of anything besides that, then go for it! I'm in a rush right now. I'll come back and edit this post/give you some good ideas. @Fatalysm: I don't edit their opinions. Just things that are supposed to be unbiased/grammar/minor mistakes. Trust me, the tone of the piece and/or the content does not change significantly. Quote

By "opinion pieces", what do you mean? Cause if it's News and Current Affairs then I'll be willing to put in an article per month. Maybe commentary and editorials. I know we used to have a News section in the old paper. Don't know how relevant it'll be here but I guess I could pull up several interesting articles people might be interested in. Quote

Fatalysm Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 If you are still having trouble with choosing a format. Might I suggest setting up the newspaper in PDF format? It can be displayed well over the internet in-browser and of course it's downloadable to. Dunno if anyone has any experiance with Adobe InDesign (that's what i'd use for the design). Maybe you can do something in a program like microsoft excel or powerpoint? Quote
