This is a great idea and will be very useful in the suggestion forum, it's worked well on other forums I have seen it used on.

Do you mean on the forums? On posts, and/or topics?

Or on the actual site so guides and what not could be liked or disliked and offered feedback?

The websites guides and things I think should have their own rating system. People can complete a poll after reading or something but I don't think it should have that much social media attached to it. The forums however, are a different matter. Facebook/twitter on the forums is interesting and would work much better. To everyone who says 'no way am I telling people I use this forum', make new accounts if you wanna be involved, Internet can be anonymous.

That would kinda defeat the purpose of people saying why they like something :(

Yea, I agree.

This probably appeals to both sides of this topic.

Make Like/Dislike Buttons but after you click in a chatbox comes out and you can put why you like/dislike this.

It's one of those things that would be kind of neat the first few days but would lose its novelty pretty quickly. Staff members would probably have all their posts liked 100 times anyway.

Shows more favoritism than actually needed. Popular members or vaild posts will get "liked" more than others the members on the forums will complain.

Also it's not freaking facebook.

That was an "April Fools" joke.

Anyways, I'm not too sure about the like thing. We could have rep, so if we post something useful someone could add to our rep and provide a short reasonable explanation.

I know that's kind of like the 'like' system but it doesn't sound as much as like Facebook :(

We used to have a ratings system (#/5 stars, appeared in the subforum index), but it wasn't too useful in the suggestions forum because everyone basically gave their own suggestion 5 stars, or people went through rating everything 1/5 or 5/5. :D

Do not support. I value open mindedness, independence and self-belief here even if it means voicing ideas that are unpopular. Putting those buttons would just make many people be out for thumbs up and approval rather than post their views in an intelligent and insightful manner. At least that's what I expect in Off-Topic.

I don't see the point of them. Even in suggestions, I don't see a point as any feedback or support can be displayed in post replies and polls.

If we had the like/dislike feature here I would dislike your suggestion :D

Firstly, this isn't Facebook. Secondly, it's much better to say to someone that you like/dislike something of theirs.

I see what you mean as far as the idea that people will become sort of robotic in their helping. They'll be looking for the ratings and things, but surely pushing a person to get those good ratings is actually pushing them to write a decent guide. If that bridge can be crossed without making it some sort of popularity contest. I think it is sort of redundant on the forums to have a like/dislike but to have a twitter function for updating with runescape stats and things, it sounds quite awesome! Same can be applied to facebook though.

I could see it working well in RuneScape Suggestions (and depending upon how the new website works, perhaps for published guides as well). For the forum at large? No, probably not a good idea.

RSC has like/dislike buttons (or at least it used to have idk haven't checked in a long time) and it was/is abused constantly. Like for example Clan A posts a war topic in the clan section and all the members of rival clans hit the dislike button giving the topic like 100+ 'dislikes'.

It's unnecessary really.

/dislike

That would leave me with a smaller post count :D.

(this also means lower activity)

No please.

One of the reasons why I still visit sals is because it hasn't turned into a Facebook

No.

Popular people will have their post "liked" 9001 times even if they say something stupid :L

EDIT: Word correction

Basically all these.

I would only find it to be handy if there were an older post on a thread that I didn't feel like specifically replying to yet easily sharing that I enjoyed it.

Is it really a problem if someone gets something liked or disliked 100 times? You dont have to get notifications. Doesn't really matter in the end. Just nice to have. Won't really effect anyone, just help people learn if people agree with them or not. And if you all haven't noticed, many sites offer it now or have before. Facebook is not the only site that offers it. I think your thinking too deep into this.
