If everyone just ignored these moronic extremists they'd disappear. Due to the publicity the PUBLIC gave that whacko 89 year old who said the world was going to end last months he's made MILLIONS of dollars.

Sh** if I was more persuasive I could just pull some random date out of my a** preach to the world how life as we know it was going to end that day and make insane amounts of cash off the scam.

Actually the Bible explicitly states that no one knows the day of the return so that's why we say that guy is a crack pot.

But, don't let facts get in the way of making a silly webcomic at the expense of people's core beliefs.

Pretty sure the Bible or Jesus himself, said that no mortal will be able to predict the end of the world.

So there goes all end of the world theories by him.

You mean "It's extravagant all the way up to the last point but people get criticized for the last point" point?

The thing is, Revelations is the book that is the most open for interpenetration but the one thing it does say is that nobody knows when it will occur. People believe all sorts of crazy things but when people pick and choose what they believe and those beliefs start contradicting each other is when you have problems.

Believing stuff always takes faith but when people's own beliefs are fighting each other is when you know something is going wrong.

But people always pick and choose what they believe--most of the world's religions are "cafeteria religions." That is, there are inherent contradictions, so everyone has to pick to believe certain things and discard others.

Except for Islam. It follows the Barney Stinson rule of 'Newer is Always Better' which basically means that if there is a contradiction, you follow the part that was written later. (Which is a little worrying because Mo got a little peeved in his later years)

I wouldn't say that. Even the theory of Gravity and Electromagnetism break down and contradict each other in certain situations, that doesn't mean we throw them out. It's how you handle the small flaws that come from people being people (in the above case, it's "We don't know what happens but we're working on it.")

When they contradictions are from the basics and on a point that they preach then it is something different entirely.

The scary thing is that people are cherry picking from a book a lot of people use as the basis of morality in their life. What if I decide all the atrocious laws in the Old Testament should be taken literally and the "good things" Mr. Jesus has said to be discarded?

It's from the same book and I'm doing the same thing you're doing. Stop having a monopoly on the truth. It's utterly terrifying how people stupidly choose what's true and good for them and what's not.

Exactly, I'm going to follow Leviticus and get slaves because the bible says it's okay!

Haven't studied Islam much, so I can't comment with much specificity. Eastern Religions, however, are definitely accretive as a rule. "Got a new deity or philosophy? Sure, throw it in the pot. We'll find someway to work it in." :D It's interesting how religions like Buddhism incorporate contradictions by describing them as simply "lesser truths" that still have value despite their limitations.

I would say that Islam still would have contradictions, however, because contradictions exist within the Old Testament. Even if they've created a way to solve these issues, its formation has still been an evolutionary process at least to some degree.

I wouldn't say that. Even the theory of Gravity and Electromagnetism break down and contradict each other in certain situations, that doesn't mean we throw them out. When they contradictions are from the basics and on a point that they preach then it is something different entirely.

There's a difference, though. Science is "truth" with a lowercase t. What we know is accepted as "true," but it is open to disproof if it arises. Religion, however, is generally "Truth" with a capital T (at least in Western Religions that I know of). It is absolute truth and therefore is not open to disproof, because disproof is an impossibility. Therefore, when you have contradictions in absolute truth, you have to pick and choose despite the fact that there should be no contradictions.

Is it too late to point out that CS Lewis believed that pretty much everyone goes to heaven?

CS Lewis was suspected of being a heavy drug user who was also a suspected paedophile. So it may have been in his favour to believe that :wizard:

Source or GTFO, since I can't find any half-decent links through a Google search.

Hate to act like such a muppet about it but seriously, if you're going to bring a claim against someone's personal background like that, prepare to back that shizzle up.

I shall look in the morning, but it is mostly anecdotal (which is why it says suspected) based on the way he writes and describes certain aspects of life. There are a few papers around about the paedophilic nature of Alice.

Oh no don't tell me it's more of that liberal extrapolation garbage that's also used when trying to prove that Jesus was a homosexual.
