Melik
I don't know if this has been addressed previously or even recently, since I haven't exactly been very active as of late, but something that has always bugged me is Sal's Forums' message limits. I never understood why we were so limited in how many messages we could store in our inboxes. Sal's doesn't have millions of users, and the messages are just text anyways, how hard can it be to store? So with the new forum update, I was alarmed to find that the message limit was still at the old level. This feels very antiquated and 1990s-ish to still have an inbox limit. Is there any way we can have this limit upped? I have many messages spanning almost 6 years on the forums and I cringe from nostalgia every time I have to delete a message from back in the day. Comments? Criticisms? Rebukes?
Hunter
I addressed this at one point with Xaria, and she said (IIRC - the message has since been deleted) that they were considering the possibility of raising the limit. I am in full support of this :( I ride 85% constantly, while deleting messages regularly.
O hai im KAMIL
Donate to the site and you will receive 1000 inbox message limit + a shiny pip. :( Anywho I agree with you. I'm pretty sure the average message takes around 50KB (just a random guess :D) so I don't see why we can't raise the limit, considering the small dwindling of activity. Yuanrang
You think you have it bad? Try having 935/1000 messages and still having to prune it out regularily just to keep an acceptable amount of space. :-/
Hunter
I thought we were over buying premium services :( Sounds like Mods need moar too.
Yuanrang
I can live with 1000, but when we had 100 (I think?) or 200, it was a bloody nightmare. :(
Fatalysm
I understand that a higher inbox space would be handy, but think of it this way. If every single member currently filled up there inbox half way (or to 50). That's 825,650 personal messages that would never be deleted. Mods have a cap of 1000. Retired mods also have that cap (i'm presuming, since yuan has been one before). There are 44 retired mods as well as 5 mods. That's like 49,000. Which is bringing our total quite a way up. Hunter
I'm pretty sure we have sufficient space for that though, Fatalysm. PM's are a big part of the forum - not as much as the actual meat of the forum (topics/posts), but still. Even 200 would be a huge improvement. Jethraw
Why do you need to hold on to PMs? Can't you just put them in a text document if they're that important? Or am I missing something because nobody loves me enough to send me meaningful PMs?
Hunter
Why do you need to hold on to PMs? Can't you just put them in a text document if they're that important? Or am I missing something because nobody loves me enough to send me meaningful PMs? That'd be all fine and dandy, but it's a lot more hassle to store them. It'd be a lot easier to leave stuff you need archived on Sal's (despite this, I do indeed put them in a text document if they're not immediately related to Sal's... but this is a relatively small portion of important messages). I found Xaria's PM before I deleted everything ...You could allocate individuals with extra PM space? I find the current limit very restrictive, especially if I need to save PM's (of which there are a rather lot of doing Blender work with WolfieMario). Unfortunately there isn't a way to give an individual extra PM space. In order to give you more space, I'd need to edit the Forum Member group to give all members in that group more space. You could try making a topic in Forum & Site Feedback to request PM space to be increased. If there are many people who find the limit too restrictive as well, then it may be increased. So, you've essentially done that. We just need to get as much support as we can Edited January 18, 2012 by Hunter
Fatalysm
I think what people actually need back is a method of archiving posts. For instance, you used to be able to archive your personal messages into html. That way you can store them on your computer rather than clogging a server. Jethraw
That still doesn't answer why you need to store PMs en-masse. Not being narky, just genuinely confused as to why people need to store PMs, it's not something I've ever needed to do.
Tabt
Imo its never going to be ebough. if you let it get up to 1000 then that'll fill up and you wont want to delete anything. And then you'll complain and want more space.

For instance, you used to be able to archive your personal messages into html. That way you can store them on your computer rather than clogging a server. This would be ideal. There must be a way of implementing this? That still doesn't answer why you need to store PMs en-masse. Not being narky, just genuinely confused as to why people need to store PMs, it's not something I've ever needed to do. I understand your query; it's just a little difficult to explain :( I personally had (before I deleted almost everything) a bunch of PM's from Wolfie regarding 3D modelling. This had details about modelling, images already hosted and displayed, etc. Sure, I could copy everything into a document, but it's just that much more hassle. Imo its never going to be ebough. if you let it get up to 1000 then that'll fill up and you wont want to delete anything. And then you'll complain and want more space. While that could be true of some people, I don't tend to have said problem. When I don't need something anymore, I delete it. Otherwise my PM's are clogged up with masses of irrelevant stuff. But it is a point.
Jethraw
Sure, I could copy everything into a document, but it's just that much more hassle. And campaigning for more inbox space isn't? :(
Kesthetic
I'm at like 95% right now and think a little bit more space would be nice. Jethraw, I really don't want to save 50 PMs on my computer and then have to go through the folder and open it up and find the one I need. Much easier to just go to the messages section on Sal's. Goggie
I don't think I ever really found it a major problem handling PM's, but then that might be nostalgia/memory loss kicking in. I can see why it'd be nice to have more PM's, even 50 more would i'm sure be greatly appreciated. It'd be good to know what kind of effect 50 more spaces would have on hosting/memory clog if say, 50 or 100 was added to Forum Member. Though, would it then make sense to create more space for DM's? I dunno, not sure that it'd be necessary but if Forum Members went up to 100 and DM was 250 it'd almost just be a token increase, rather than one made with anticipation of handling reports/problems. venom
I have 942 messages at the moment and I'm going to be sad if I have to ever delete some Edit: fudge yeah, I'm more popular than Yuan. Whiskas
I'm only at 81% and rarely do I receive messages (and to be honest I could probably delete quite a number, most of the PMs I have on the first page are from Gonzy about Mafia) but in the past I have deleted a lot of PMs that I would rather have kept. Fatalysm
Also, I don't know if anyone has taken this into consideration. Also, whether or not this will help with storage or not. However personal messages are now stored in a conversational way, so rather than sending someone 5 different messages with different subjects, you could save inbox space by using one conversation on one person. That effectively only limits you to 100 people and out of that 100 people how many are going to be important.
