Hi all,

It has recently come to my attention that our old InvisionFree forum (open in 2004-2005) has been hijacked. The main admin account was compromised, giving the individual full access to the administration interface, including usernames, email addresses and IP addresses of members registered on that board. It is possible that the intruder manually reset some members' passwords to gain access to their old forum accounts to read their messages. However, as there is no way to access the forum database through InvisionFree, no passwords were compromised.

If you registered an account on our old InvisionFree board between November 2004 and November 2005, I highly recommend making sure that your email account is secured with a strong password and a strong security answer. This is also the time to make sure your RuneScape account is secure with a strong, unique password, unguessable security answers, and a bank pin.

Note: This only affects accounts registered on our old InvisionFree forum. If you registered here, at runescape.salmoneus.net/forums, your account is not affected.

However, I can not stress it enough: please make sure your online accounts are secure! Make sure your RuneScape password is unique to all your other passwords, and that your security questions are not guessable. Make sure your email account is secure too, with a strong, unique password, strong recovery answers, and two factor authentication if available.

Immediately after learning that the old board had been hijacked, I proceeded to contact InvisionFree about the situation. As of early this morning, the board and all of its contents have been deleted from InvisionFree's servers.

Unfortunately, this includes post data as well. It's a shame too, as a year of Sals history is now gone. :(

I sincerely apologize for this incident. Security has always been a main focus of ours, and I hope that this does not damage your opinion of us!

It happens, I'm glad we didn't lose passwords, though. I do have a less secure blanket password which I use for stuff like school etc.

Where is it though? :o

It's been obliterated into nonexistence. In other words, the interweb eated it.

Isn't it technically still on their server hard drives, recoverable with a data recovery program if you bribe them with a crapton of cash? :P

Technically, yes. I'll be sneaking into InvisionFree later tonight with a "borrowed" degausser from the local university to finish the job :cute:

LOL

I'm assuming the wayback machine will still show the forums, correct? It's sad to see the old forums go as I had never being a part of it and I enjoyed reading some of the posts on there, but it's better this way.

I had an account registered back then, but I think it was deleted or locked due to inactivity after I quit RS for a few years.

Ah, the memories :)

I remember how the sals forum taught me to upload my first images.

and no, I will not tell you my original username

To be honest I am kind of sad about this. I still had the URL to the site and visited it occasionally when I had nothing else to do. It was fun looking back at the times when I felt there was stuff to explore in the game and there were still frontiers unadventured. Now it's all gone and the memories with it are too.

If I visit the site now just to see what is left of it, is there a chance I could get infected with a virus?

It'll just bring up a 404 Not Found error if you try visiting the old board now. I checked it myself before it was deleted and the board appeared clean; no hidden iframes or injected scripts. The individual likely did it just to gain access to the ACP and collect member details. :/

That's because you're young.

When I was a kid, our computer monitors had to be degaussed on a pretty regular basis. BECAUSE THEY WERE CATHODE RAY TUBES MONITORS AND NOT FLATSCREEN!

Good try, Macki. We're on to you...

It's a shame about the old forums though. Since I joined after that era was over, it's not a big deal to me, but I can understand some people being sad.
