Where are the guidewriters?

It's almost been over two months since someone has posted something in the guides-in-process section.

Where are all guidewriters? The Morytania tasks have been out for a month and no one has even started a guide about them.

I can remember a time where when something new is added to RuneScape about three people would start a guide about it and almost fight about whose guide would have the honor to be accepted.

The number of active Runescape players isn't what it used to be.

Well, no offence, but you haven't posted in that two months either

In the real world, people who retire get replaced by new (younger) people. Where are the new players in RuneScape?

Yes, I know. There just doesn't seem to be anything there I can help with. I could take some screenshots of some new update (the creatures in RuneSpan for example). but what then? Just post the images alone?

And writing a guide myself? I have trouble finding the right words to type a medium sized post, so a whole guide would be near impossible for me.

Runecape is being replaced by newer games.

I don't see it as an issue based on the number of RuneScape players. Guide writer numbers have always been waning while I can imagine the number of active RuneScape players has varied (return of RWT, etc). I just think that the number of active RuneScape players on Sal's has slowly been decreasing.

I can write guides but I only tend to to quest guides.

You need new content for new guides.

I haven't even been played the game all year and yet even I can see that we've had Squeal Of Fortune, Runespan, 2012 Easter & Christmas events, Fremennik Sagas II, Morytania Tasks, TzHaar Quest, Minigame and Graphical Rework, Potion Flasks, Troll Warzone, and hundreds of other countless small and big updates that affect existing guides and content.

Without active players we have fewer people writing guides. This will be a serious problem for the main site and there's very little we can do about it.

Let's not forget that Jagex has added the RuneScape Wiki, essentially taking away the reason most of us joined fansites in the first place: looking for an Ernest the Chicken quest guide. New players have much more handed to them so it's harder to attract them here, and we don't yet have the power to make our active players write guides through hypnosis.

Given the hand we were dealt, I would say we're still growing.

I used to use the sals guides through pure loyalty, even though they were slightly out of date :D

Should probably focus on specialist guides instead.

I got dibs on writing SoF guide!!!

Jk. But I think forum activity has been on the decline anyways. If you subtract Aabid.

Then again I only frequent the PvP section, and that's been on the decline for like two or three years.

There isn't much incentive. In the past, a writer would feel rewarded by having thousands of views to his/her topic.

On top of this (and no offence to Sal here, we know he's busy), it doesn't help that guides take ages to be added to the site. I've got two guides sitting in the Guides-In-Progress section that are for quests the site doesn't have guides for yet, but they've been there since early-mid December and nothing's happened.

Other sites like tip.it have resolved this issue through a volunteered (but once you volunteer, you have to do it) team of guidewriters where positions become available every now and then, and good potential guidewriters are spotted through a 'player-made guides' subforum. I think they've also got more than one person who can add things onto the site.

  • 1 month later...

look, I just made a holiday event guide (which was short but good) and I rewrote a guide on the darkness of hallowvale. It has been there for weeks and no one has added it to the website yet. I would like to keep writing but no one helps me help sal!! The day I see guides are added quickly i'll continue to rewrite guides and make new ones.

anyway, i like runescape wiki but for quests and skill training I always come here. This site has helped me a lot during my 6 years playing this game.

Honestly we're too small of a site now, for various reasons, to pursue actively guidewriting. Given that, I will pursue writing my Dungeoneering Guide after the combat reworks.

Maybe we're too small of a site right now because we have no constant flow of guides being put on the site which deters a lot of new people from joining the Forums.

I realize that my attitude may sound like I'm trying to place blame on Sal but I'm honestly not. I'm not one who makes guides or anything but I understand where the guide writers are coming from.
