Where are the guidewriters?

Maybe Sal could appoint someone other than himself who would be able to add the guides to the site?

Sal said something that if other people could edit content on the guide, then Sal wouldn't always have the most up to date ones on his computer backed up as text files or something. It'd be hard to keep up with the most updated version and god forbid the site crashes or something.

Yeah but at least we'd have something to show and the guides would still remain on the Forum. And if for some reason they get erased off the forum too then I doubt Sal has any of the guides in progress backed up. Either way the guides should be released though.

IDK if I made any sense.

I was fairly sure there was going to be a system that allowed members to update guides on the site (with permissions obv) which meant that it wasnt down to sal downloading and re uploading an html page to update/post a guide.

Honestly, there isn't a point in writing quest guides anymore. No offense to the guide writers, but the ones over at Runescape Wiki are far more thorough than the ones we have. I think focusing on guides for different aspects of skills would be much more effective.

As for the guides not being updated frequently enough, I think I have an idea:

We add a sub-forum to the guides-in-progress forum. In that forum you can post your finished guides and set up a poll. People read the guide and vote yes or no whether to add it to the site. The guide must get at least 100 (?) votes, and there must be a 90(?)% or more approval rating for it to get added. Then maybe we could elect 3 or so volunteers as the "Guide Addition Team" who is responsible for posting the accepted guides on the website. That would take a load off of Sal's shoulders and would probably lead to quicker updates.

Of course the actual numbers in the solution will probably need discussion, but the general idea is there.

I'd be happy to see a team put together of people who could put content onto the site quickly. It's a bit disheartening to try and produce a guide within a reasonable timeframe of the content being released and for it not to go live on the site quite quickly.

I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for people who have written extensive and incredibly long guides.

It doesn't matter if the Wiki is more thorough (it doesn't help that it can be constantly edited by anyone so that it's more updated). We still need that content on our site. You could hardly call us a good fansite if we drove away people looking for help - "That site over there is better, leave us alone". Less updated content is better than no content at all. Heck, the RuneScape Wiki has a more accurate guide, but our guides are still able to help players with what they need and get them through the quest/activity.

I highly doubt that would work. First of all, it would require activity in the Guides in Progress forum - something that isn't there apart from a few guide writers and those looking to help.

I do agree that there should be a content team, but I think it should be done differently to your vision. First of all, the content team would have to be picked by Sal - it's his site, he needs to have the final say in what goes in it. This would also mean that the team would have to run any additions by Sal before they can add it to the site. Like, they could just say "Sal, here's a guide. We all agree that it is of a high enough quality to be added. Requesting permission to add it?" He can either take their word for it or general feedback in the guide's topic, or he can just read it through himself and decide. This means that he still decides what's happening, but without the extra time of adding it to the site or browsing through the guides/topics and deciding what should be added and what needs improvements.

OK, I agree with that. Do you at least like the idea of the poll deciding the approval, or should that be the duty of the team as well? Because I think that getting more than 3 or 4 opinions on a guide would probably help quality control and get some "user reviews" on it as well. Maybe even taking it a step further and adding a poll for the non-members who visit the site for the guides to have a say too?

But the cause of the part about there not being enough activity in the guides-in-progress forum could be exactly about what the problem is we are addressing in this topic. If guides were posted within a few days or even a week, people would be more willing to spend their time on them instead of hoping 2 years later that it might show up.

No. It's Sal's decision about what gets added on the site, not anyone else's. If you want to have a say, post feedback in the guide thread and let Sal and the guide writer act on that.

I feel like maybe we should get Sal's opinion instead of just stating what we think he would say. I honestly think he might not see this as such a bad idea if it would be for the overall good of the site.

Edited my original post. You're confusing what I think should happen with me saying what Sal thinks should happen.

No I know what you mean, but I'm just saying that obviously there isn't a way for Sal to effectively approve everything that gets added to the site. Which is why we are having this conversation. I think a way for the members to help out wouldn't be a bad idea.

There is a way for Sal to approve everything that gets added to the site - it's what's happening now. I also agree with you that members helping out is a good idea, except my idea involves the premise that Sal stays as the end all.

Keyword: Effectively

Yes, he is indeed doing that now, but as you can see from the enormous delay between guides being finished to the time they actually get put on the site, it's far from effective.

Well, you can get most of the pictures off of Google/RuneWiki. Then you Photoshop the background out and you get a nicer looking picture. Just let me know which ones you want in a PM and I'll do em up for you.

No. You have to take the pictures yourself.
