Broken .avi files/codec?

Recommended Posts

I've got a massive problem at the moment. Whenever I try to record .avi files, or pretty much any other file format than .camrec (The file type camtasia uses), I can't open it in any video editing program at all. I get error messages and stuff, in camtasia it says that it is unable to decode the video stream, and I have no idea on what this means. The strange thing is that I can easily open the files in windows media player/vlc media player ect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Will post pictures later when I have time.

Yeah, I get this a lot (I'm using OS X, and the problem occurs with both Blender Renders and Screenium (screen recording) recordings). I've no idea how to fix it; thus far, my solution has been to render streams of PNG files (which takes up a LOT of HD space!), or to record in MP4/similar instead (lower quality, sadly, with this program).

So, I besides those suggestions (use a different format), I can't help. I'd be interested if there was a fix (I tried a couple of AVI-fixing programs, but they didn't work :/).

I'm using Windows 7...

Anyways, here's the error from camtasia.

OS is likely besides the point.

That's a very similar error to what I was getting (when I got an error - other times it just didn't do anything; didn't recognise it as a movie/audio file!).

Windows live movie maker doesn't seem to put up a problem unlike before, I'll try rendering a video and get back to you.

Here's the link when the video finishes uploading...And yes I did suceed with windows live movie maker, however that program is like shizzle for making videos in....

If you use camtasia to record, which you probably do, save the file as a different type. To save it as a different type, you have to click on the drop down arrow on "save and edit" and press Save As.... When you name it, type .mp4 at the end of your title. This should fix it.

AFAIK typing a different extension won't actually encode it as a different filetype, unless camtasia has a VERY strange save mechanism.

First thing's first, a brief learning period for everyone. There are two things (well technically three): a container file (avi) and format (xvid or AAC). So what happens is the program accepts the file format but perhaps what's happening is you don't have the codec (coder-decoder) to read the format.

So in order to do that, try downloading the k-lite codec pack http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

I'd be inclined to agree, but where Premiere Pro previously accepted the AVI files, it no longer does (yet it does accept those I've recorded via Bandicam). I'm entirely sure it's the same codec.

The camtasia message still pops up...However now I've got another problem.

Recently i downloaded a new driver for my graphics card, and that seem to have fixed the Movie Maker problem, however now I can't play runescape in my browser, and I get this error message

Try to change the extension of the file from .avi to .mp4 and see whether it is working or not.

If you are confirmed that your .avi file is broken or damaged then you can try AVI file Repair software. It is specifically designed to restore corrupted, damaged or broken AVI video files. You can easily fix broken AVI video files created in your Camtasia Studio application with AVI file Repair software.

I also met some problems when using Camtasia. I want to convert my CAMPROJ file by Camtasia video editor and transfer them to my USB by converting to AVI. I have already followed this guide http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/tips/camrec-to-avi.html and it says clearly what I should do. But I do not know why when trying playing it on VLC, it says " no valid title"
