Getting rid of the upvote/downvote system

Recommended Posts

As for Aabid himself (it might just be my lack of activity), but I've noticed he's been 'spamming' a lot less recently or has at least been making more meaningful posts/threads lately. So maybe he's realized that and people will downvote his posts less.

Or maybe he is just too worried that when he posts he will just get downvoted, causing him to post less. I don't want to sound like I've been tracking Aabid's account, but I see him active frequently on the current users area on the bottom of the index but I rarely seem him post these days. Making people feel alienated=less activity.

Although my feelings toward this system are slightly better than they were now that abuses have gone down, I will never be a fan for one reason: it gets people caring about another stupid number (reputation points). This is a personal thing though and I can see why people want to keep the whole sha-bang now.

Now that people aren't abusing it, I really do like this system. It saves me the time and frustration from explaining why I think a post is dumb, which usually only serves to detract from the thread anyway.

*cough*

Anyways, here's my input on the whole thing, obtained from looking around at various threads and experience on RSC, where they have had a "rep" system for a good while now.

I believe, first and foremost, that there is nothing inherently wrong with a upvote/downvote system; many of you seem to agree. The problem arises due to the persistent abusers of this system. This abuse can be attributed to two things:

1) The novelty of the system: This system has only been in place for a month - naturally, when a child gets a new toy, they want to play with it. However, over time, as the sheen of the excitement of pressing upvote and downvote wears off, I think we won't have a situation similar to the one I see in this thread, where very few posts still have a "0" next to them. The system has only been in place for a month; give it a bit of a chance.

...

Give reputation a chance. (Apparently) we asked for it, and we shouldn't just disenchant ourselves with it after a single month. Stick it out for a bit and see how it goes.

*cough*

Told you =) =)

I enjoy the system, i can go through a thread, and silently judge everyone there.(until i run out of votes)

I really don't see a problem with the whole thing. Yeah, some people abuse the voting system, but what do they gain from that? It's not like every time you get an upvote someone gives you a cookie, and every time you get a downvote the IRS raises your taxes 10%.

I know of other forums where the ratings on a post affect your "reputation". Having 50 +1 ratings in total for posts, for instance, would give +1 to your reputation. Otherwise, I don't see the point of having these +1/-1 things because to me it seems trivial.
