Dutch government seeks to let law enforcement hack foreign computers

Recommended Posts

The Dutch government wants to give law enforcement authorities the power to hack into computers, including those located in other countries, for the purpose of discovering and gathering evidence during cybercrime investigations.

...

According to the letter, the new legislation would allow cybercrime investigators to remotely infiltrate computers in order to install monitoring software or to search them for evidence. Investigators would also be allowed to destroy illegal content, like child pornography, found during such searches.

These investigative powers would not only cover computers located in the Netherlands, but also computers located in other countries, if the location of those computers cannot be determined.

(emphasis by me)

The foreign countries part really bites the dirt; making this a law is the worst bad idea in the history of Dutch bad ideas.

Plus, if they really wanted to do it, probably a bad idea to advertise it to the entire world, especially like this.

The worst part, perhaps, is that if this were to pass, it's only a matter of time before it spreads to other countries under the guise of protecting children and the innocent from pedophiles and stalkers, in order to push it to be approved by the public. Scary stuff.

There should be some sort of international law against this.

Most governments would probably accuse you of being a pedophile if you advocated that.

Tough how people we didn't even vote into office can hack into our stuff. :/ I don't have much to hide though... :aware:

Well... you think other countries would be upset that the Dutch are making a law to hack their computers.

problem is that criminality on the internet is running rampant

and as along as you can theoretically move your stuff to a server on some lawless country and because of that escape it all you will get those laws

either you find a solution worldwide or countries will start doing things like this

because denying the problem, like you pretty much all do right now, will only make the response worse

also: if this is so far just an idea uttered by some politician(s), aka a storm in a glass of water
