Microsoft patents spy-TV to check you've paid for content

Microsoft has been granted a patent on a content distribution system that uses cameras built into televisions, PCs, and mobile phones to act as a "consumer detector," to enforce DRM licensing terms.

"A fee can be charged for each viewer of the content for each view," Patent US20120278904 reads. "Viewers may be uniquely identified and a count of the viewers determined, with the licensee then charged for each viewer accessing the content. Age and identity restrictions can be applied in this embodiment as well."

I also found this interesting...

This Kinect Patent Is Terrifying, Wants To Charge You For License Violation

A patent filed by Microsoft last year, but only made public last week, wants to turn your Xbox 360′s Kinect into an instrument via which large companies can monitor your media usage and, if you’re found to be in violation of something, charge you for it.

The fact that they can simply 'look in' and [theoretically] see what's going on in your living room, bedroom, etc. is what bugs me. Yes, they say that it's only for services which implement the restrictions on # of viewers, but it's just another step closer to the surveillance society in 1984.

Plus, the fact that this would prevent many families from watching a movie together (restriction appears to be 4 people) is just ludicrous.

No more watching porn on your TV, then.

Isn't this an invasion of privacy? I remember when a high school tried doing this to school given laptops a few years ago they were nearly sued.

What if Microsoft is patenting Spy-TVs because they think it's unethical and want to prevent other companies from using it.

can't you wear a mask and avoid the fees

Couldn't they still tell that a masked person is still a person? :P Plus, I'm sure that it would monitor the room during the entire movie, so wearing a mask to watch a movie would quickly get annoying. :P

Ok, that's deep. Like, so, M$ isn't the bad guy here? doubletake.bmp And they're helping us common folk by grabbing a patent before a 'bad' company does? headexplode.tga

The day Microsux does something for the greater good is the day the man from the moon flies down & hands out free cheese to the starving in Africa, in the meantime I'll keep hoping that a gamers Linux version & all the supporting drivers etc are released soon - probably just as likely unfortunately :(

Dis-effing-gusting. Talk about invasion of privacy&personal rights. Big corps spying on me like that, what do they think they are? If I were a minor and I found that out after leaving on my camera-infested TV while "indecent" I'd sue for child porn. lmfao. GF microsoft. Way to make the world a little less pleasant. I love flipping off cameras.

EDIT:

Why don't they just use iris scanning technology instead? Cheaper, sneakier, less invasive, and far more reliable.

Why would you expect a corporation to do something for the greater good? That and Microsoft have done good (they've done a lot of things that help students (e.g. Dreamspark)).

Apple made the Information Age possible as it is today by practically giving away computers to schools and yet everyone seems to think they're the worst thing since platters of diarrhea.

I'd be perfectly fine with this if it was Google and not Microsoft.
