Wow, that's actually pretty neat.

How often do you have to clean it with your own hands?

once a week a 20% water replacement and 'vacuuming' the stones for dirt and some window cleaning with a magnet cleaning block

goes quite efficient if you have the right tools like a 14m hose to get the 100L water out and the new back in straight from the tap at the correct temperature (30°C)

additives added to the water neutralise the chloride etc so there is no problem with adding tap water directly

40 minutes all in all for a thorough  cleaning job

daily feeding twice freezer food (and twice dry food from automatic feeder) and adding CO2 additives to lower PH and feed the plants (and combat algae)

quite easy nowadays although those discus fish are the hardest you can get in tropical sweet water aquaria

if you think 40 minutes a week is a lot of work you're in for a big surprise when you buy your own house

that won't eat your soul

just your bank account now named 'the abyss'

I keep well away from self fix because what you do yourself you do badly

unless you are an actual construction worker...

I am not an actual construction worker, and my bank account is not large enough to become an abyss yet .___.

it depends too on the standards and need for isolation where you live

Belgium has very high legal standards, of course there are still people living in bad houses, but you need to get multiple mandatory checks for safety and isolation quality. But those checks are only when buying/selling

heating unit checkup every 2 years mandatory but that's small beans

electricity being mainly the one which is a pain in my ass now (you need to be in order 1 year after buying the house when it has been declared not ok when being sold)

etc etc
