Dear Jagex Community Managers

Recommended Posts

Why the need for a big public outcry over one man's incompetence? Couldn't you have contacted the offices of Jagex regarding this?

he *is* the contact :P

Then email someone else or ask to talk to someone else.

Have you ever tried contacting Jagex? :cute:

Sal's has been a fansite for over 10 years, and we have always been careful not to host any content that is non-family-friendly. We have never entertained discussions of botting, cheating, rulebreaking, glitching, or otherwise illegal activities (both in RS and RL). So for someone to just take a glance at a topic list and then accuse us of either 1) allowing such content to be posted, or 2) being so blatantly incompetent in moderating our own forum that we would allow such a topic to sit there for months and months, is both insulting and frustrating. The fact that said topic contains absolutely no explicit content in it and that the manager who saw it didn't even bother to open the topic (or preview it, which would display the first and last posts without pictures) makes it that much more frustrating. And after politely explaining the misunderstanding, we're instructed to rename the "section" anyways.

Point is, when I/we agreed to the Jagex partnership, we were assured that we were in control of our content. Now they want us to censor a "section" (which is ambiguous) because of the word "porn"; which, frankly, the average web user sees on a daily basis on their favorite sites anyways. Next, will they demand removing an entire topic that they don't like? An entire forum category (eg "Other Games")? Prohibit discussion of a particular subject? Where does it end?

There is a filter in runescape for younger players, not on the forum. Regardless, it should be based on context, in that context the usage is PC.

I think the reason why most of us are put out is because it gives the impression that Jagex thinks we are incapable of moderating ourselves. We have good moderators an a good community that are quick to report unsafe or illicit content on the forums. The actual existence of the topic itself is proof of that fact. It was a topic from a member hi lighting some inappropriate content. We are supposed to be in partnership with Jagex, not beneath them and subject to them.

So has there been a response to this thread? An apology? Anything?

An attempt to make contact besides this single posting?

I sent Mod Sabre a PM on reddit since he's active over there and also part of the CM team. Hopefully there will at least be an apology and an acknowledgement of wrong doing.

Edit: Got a response.

I really appreciate the heads up, I don't spend much time on Sal's realm so may have missed it otherwise. I'll pass it on to our CM guys that interact with our fansites and have them take a look into the situation today, as it's now my bedtime for tonight's night shift :)

Have a good day/night wherever you are, and thanks again for passing this on!

Sabre

I want to begin by stating that the title of the topic in question is misleading and the forum rules discourage misleading content. I think we might want to re-evaluate our rules and decide where to draw the line on what is considered misleading and what is humorous.

From Yuanarang's perspective, the Community Manager team at Jagex appear to be incompetent. The support by Jagex given to Sal's Realm is as poor as the support given to fans of FunOrb.

There was nothing misleading about the topic. It was a genuine issue of flickr serving up pornographic imagery.

An apology and explanation from Mod Lods:

Hi Rick

Apologies for any crossed wires there may have been in previous communication regarding this topic. I am in no way trying to take control of any fan sites' date=' just want to give them support where we can, to promote your dedicated work.

When I used the words ‘our fansites’, I meant fan sites based around any content belonging to Jagex e.g. Runescape etc. I in no way meant to come across as claiming ownership or dictating rules. We appreciate the work all our fan sites do to help promote our content.

I apologies if I jumped to conclusions on a forum topic that was called ‘PORN PICTURES’. I appreciate your staff members would never allow any kind of explicit images to be posted on your website or forums. In hindsight I should have come to you asking what the thread was for, rather than asking you to remove it.

I would like you to know my actions were meant in a genuine way and I was trying to look out for the community.

Following internal restructuring I have only recently been appointed to this particular role, following working as Community Coordinator for Carnage Racing. Just so you know a little about my background, previously I was part of the player support team here at Jagex. I also have previous experience of community management working at SEGA Europe.

I hope we can move forward and work together in a positive manner

Many Thanks, and apologies again for any trouble caused

Honestly, i don't harbor any "ill will" towards Jagex. I love Jagex, and I love RuneScape. It's just that some of Jagex's policies and actions frustrate me/us at times.

That seems like a reasonably sincere letter. Obviously this doesn't fix everything but to me it looks like a good step forward.

That's the trouble with text based communication, it can be interpreted so differently than intended.

Congrats on the new job Mod Lods. :)

Back to front jeans just seem more difficult to button up than anything. I mean, you still have two pockets in the front and two in the back.

Because we are a platinum fansite, and that should mean something, DAMNIT.

The only reason that Jagex has set up the fansite rank system is so that they can assert control over them with the threat of lowering their rank - as if rank even means anything. RS Wiki is silver but is the most well known and reliable fansite; Sals may be platinum, but it has next to no up-to-date guides and information, and the average RS player has no idea what the hell Sals even is. To be honest, there are no benefits offered by their so-called "fansite support programme" are worth striving for.

I challenge you to find a list on the RS website that even mentions the names of gold or platinum fansites. Actually, don't bother: it does not exist.

How much support is Jagex really providing if the so-called gold or platinum fansites cannot be found even if you tried?

Actually, let's examine the requirements and "benefits"..

  • Benefit: Guaranteed invitations to Jagex and Jagex's future events.
  • Benefit: Regular exclusive staff interview.
  • Benefit: Update support (exclusive staff interviews and concept art following the launch of large updates).

So tell me, how many times has Sals received any of these three benefits? Based on what I've seen on both the RS website and Sals, I would estimate... somewhere between zero and nil.

  • Benefit: Regular exclusive concept art.

If I wanted previews of upcoming content, I would subscribe to the Behind-the-Scenes playlist on Jagex's youtube channel, or simply visit the RS homepage.

It also amazes me how they manage to pack 3 lies into 4 words. Regular? Just look at the time intervals between posts on the relevant topic. Exclusive? Half the time, the screenshots are posted by Jmods on the Future Updates section of the RSOF before getting to Sals. Concept art? Sorry, but in my book screenshots do not constitute "concept art."

  • Benefit: Regular merchandise from the Jagex Store for competition giveaways.

Shameless self-promotion notwithstanding, how many times have we actually received anything from Jagex to be used as competition giveaways? I've only ever seen Jagex offer these to big youtubers like Omustardo.

  • Requirement: These websites are a good resource for game-related help and offer a number of frequently updated tools and guides.

Sals is a prime example of how "frequently updated" is not something that Jagex checks for.

  • Requirement: Jagex is acknowledged whenever any copyrighted content/images are used.

Well, according to the terms and conditions,

Materials (including without limit all information, software, data, text, photographs, graphics, sound and video) placed on any Jagex Product by us or on our behalf are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights of ourselves or our business partners / suppliers / advertisers.
all screenshots of the game belong to Jagex. So, has this rule ever actually been followed before?
  • Requirement: These websites do not support Real World Trading and block adverts for any such services.
  • Requirement: The website owner(s) focus solely on the game they are supporting. They understand that gaming adverts will push players away from the game and their fansite and block/remove these from their site .
  • Benefit: Advertising support or management from Jagex (if applicable).

Yeah, so that they control what ads you can show to be the most beneficial to them. This was one of the primary reasons that the "fansite support programme" was started in the first place. This is the reason that RS Wiki is Silver and Zybez is not even ranked. These ads tend to be the most profitable for a fansite to host. It is also worth noting that neither RS Wiki or Zybez had control over what ads they host.

Is it not a childish move to prevent the fansite from showing ads for games that compete against RS? If they're so worried that RS players will be attracted to other games, then why not, you know, make the game better rather than censoring the competition out of fear that they will beat RS?

That's actually partly my fault - Jagex used to offer interviews and concept art to us, while now it seems that we need to ask for interviews. Which is fine, and as I've said in the past, if there's something you guys would really like (an interview with a particular developer, concept art on a quest, etc.), I can get in touch and see what they can do. It's just a lot for me to keep up with getting interviews and such together along with everything else around here - a fish needs help every now and then! :P

Sals is a prime example of how "frequently updated" is not something that Jagex checks for.

Define "frequently"... :aware:

the average RS player has no idea what the hell Sals even is

Why are we here then?!? Whyyyy... arrrre... weeee.... heeeerrrrre?!?! /existential crisis
