So I have a 'scavenged' computer - and one of the hard disks is acting up, causing freezes and various bollocks.

From time to time, Windows XP records a barrage of Disk Errors (event ID 51) "error in peripheral \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation" and freezes.

(The IDE disk controller passes also from Ultra DMA mode to PIO, partying like it's 1985, but that's easily reversed)

A HD Tune log shows that, in correspondence with these errors, there's a surge in Interface CRC Error Count.

The other SMART data do not show any problem.

The disk is a SATA drive (80GB).

Is a diagnosis of "check the SATA cable and, if necessary, change it" correct?

Doubt the SATA cable is what's causing the problem. You really have to put those through hell before they start acting up. Most likely the drive is dying, easy to replace.

If it's still usable, I recommend backing up all important data ASAP.

Way ahead of you on the last one, sir. :P

Does the above hold true even if all the other SMART attributes are perfect (0 reallocated sectors, 0 current pending sectors, etc.) - its power-on count is about 120 days (cfr. my laptop's 350 days or the other HDD in the computer clocking in at 808 days)?

Is there any diagnostic I could run (except keeping SMART data logged) to see if there's bad sectors or whathaveyou?

Yea download and burn hirens bootCD, boot into it, I believe on the first screen select More at the bottom, then go to Hard Disk tools and see if you can use HDtune which will run a test to see what the problems are. If HDtune doesn't work, try hard disk sentinel.

You want to run it from a boot CD and not a program from the drive, since the drive is in use for things like system files and the program itself. Having it run from the RAM and disk makes it more error false-positive free (whatever you want to call it, makes it more accurate).
